After about a 2 or 3-year hiatus, MAN OH MAN does it feel good to be reading my favorite manga series again!!! There’s so much to praise this series for and I think I’ll wait till my review for the final volume to dive into that praise. But to sum it up, I LIVE for these characters. This is one of the most wholesome, original, greatly paced series I’ve ever read. It really earns its length and the way all the relationships are handled…MY GOD. I’m just an unstoppable force when it comes to fawning over my dragon babies and my Yona baby and Yun baby and Hak baby. Don’t even get me started on other fantastic characters like the headstrong Lily and the hilarious Tae-jun and the PRECIOUS wind tribe (God I frickin LOVE how much the wind tribe fawns over Hak. I need him to stop being such a brat and openly love them back lmao).

Soo-won is also a wonderfully written character. He’s had to do some bad shit, including backstabbing his closest friends, but he is a fantastic king. And what’s truly tragic is that Yona and Hak know him so well to believe in his leadership even if they can’t forgive him for what he did. Knowing that they can never go back to the way things were and knowing that Soo-won does not expect to live peacefully because of his sins is just heartbreaking.

The most lovable thing about this series honestly, is the incredibly strong sense of kinship between Yona, Yun, Hak, Ki-ja, Shin-ah, Jae-ha, Zeno and Ao (aka Happy Hungry Bunch <3). They see each other as family and it’s absolutely beautiful. The found family element is just through the roof. I want to cry because of how wholesome they are and how much they mean to each other.

Also, shoutout to Algira and the other Five Stars cause I love them all so much too (Algira is my fav, I will FIGHT to see more of him after this arc). Princess Kouren is also a well written character; I’m always thrilled to see more strong female characters. What really makes Kouren stand out though is that she’s incredibly flawed and I so appreciate seeing that from a strong female character.

Welp, I ended up fawning over this series in this review anyway. Oh well. But PLEASE pick up this series. It’s incredible.

P.S. If you watch the anime, DO NOT watch the OVAs until after you learn more about Zeno in the manga! Some of those OVAs include MAJOR spoilers for Zeno’s character.

Princess Yona is the pampered daughter of her kingdom's king. Isolated and doted on she has two childhood friends, Hak, a general who also protects her and her cousin, Suwon who helped her mourn her mother's passing and who she is crushing on big time. On her 16th birthday her entire world implodes to to a crippling betrayal... She must decide if she will fall in line or rise up and take back her kingdom.

Actually Suwon is a bit of a coward in this volume of Yona of the Dawn. I was rather shocked by his choices but really they make sense. He’s done some horrific things to get to where he is... he can’t reevaluate now. This comes full circle by the end and it’s really exciting as things are way more extreme at this point.

There are some surprise guests in Yona of the Dawn vol 24, and they are all characters that excited me to see show up. I really don’t want to spoil it because these characters are essential to Yona and Hak’s negotiations on behalf of Xing. We also have a surprise character who joins the dragons’ side for a really creepy reason.

Yona of the Dawn vol 24 sets us up for a political battle between monarchs. It’s going to be epic with everyone involved. The dragons are down and out... now it’s Yona and Hak’s turn to do the fighting. I love this series, it’s always giving us an exciting ride to epic situations in this historical kingdom.

I have been waiting for this since about book 3.

The tension is so high in this volume!! So much is being built up for the climax and I’m so psyched up for it! The characters/narration are cleverly withholding information in such a way that it clicks when it finally releases. Like when you finally find the last puzzle piece for your puzzle.

I’m so excited for the upcoming volumes! This series is easily in my top 5 favorites.

Major Spoilers Below!!

Omg that Hak/Yona kiss was so unexpected but so amazing!!! I’m really rooting for them. Not only because they have healthy relationship, but because they suit each other quite well!!

I sense a chat about this kiss in the future, perhaps by a fire or in the castle... we shall see.

End of Major Spoilers

4.75 stars!! WHY DO THESE VOLUMES END ON THE WORST CLIFFHANGERS WHENEVER I DECIDE, "ONE MORE CHAPTER AND THEN I'LL GO TO BED"??? If it wasn't for the fact that I have to wake up early tomorrow, I would probably be reading the next volume right about now.

Anyways...YONA DID IT GUYS. I REPEAT: YONA FINALLY DID IT. SHE KISSED HAK. SHE. KISSED. HAK!!!! Am I being overdramatic? Maybe, but who cares? I have been waiting for this moment since day ONE. The only downside to this is that now that it's happened, now that they've kissed, I just want MORE. I want them to confess their love for one another, and I want it to be poetic. I want them to actually get together! It's for my own sanity and well-being. I need this more than I need anything else in life. I won't be able to die happily if I don't get to see Yona and Hak as a couple. And maybe I sound crazy or insane (I am), but that is what this series has turned me into. I am not the same person I was last week before I started reading this (yes it was one week ago, I've been binge-reading). Then when I finish this series (probably by the end of the month)...I don't know how I'll be able to function properly. But hey, I don't have to worry about that much now since I'm only a little bit more than halfway done with these volumes!

I said in my review of volume 23 that I think Suwon would listen to Yona (which I was wrong about), and now Yona is going to confront him for real this time. I genuinely don't know what'll happen. A part of me wants to believe that he'd listen to her, but based on his inner monologue about how he wants to do whatever he can to unite the five nations, I feel like it would go against his character. But I don't know. I guess I'll find out what'll happen when I read the next volume tomorrow!

Much heavier volume then the last and was thankful how it ended because that means good action will take place hopefully??

I guess I'll have to read the next volume to find out, but wow! Talk about some come backs of a few "older" characters!! Absolutely LOVEDDDDDDD seeing one because he's awesome and felt so blessed to see him again on page!! <3

Yona's actions are very powerful in this one. From giving up one thing to willing to be daring in a way we haven't seen quite like this was awesome. Goodness though did I feel the pressure on her shoulders and was thankful for an *excellent* Yona and Hak ship moment! I needed it! LOL!

One thing I definitely walked away with from this volume is that the Wind Tribe is awesome. I deeply loved seeing them and getting them to know them better as well as as see their loyalty to Hak. It was so wonderful! <3

Lastly, the dragons, especially Gija. I love them.

Wait! One other thing! I do NOT like Mizari! I meant to mention that last volume and forgot, but he is one of those crazy characters that you HAVE to keep an eye on because he's just that dangerous. I'm thankful he was a voice of reason near the end even if it was in a way that totally made me angry and cringe and dislike his character more, but he spoke up about something that I think can be the turning point where I can't completely hate his character.

Let's see where the next volume goes because hopefully will have a stress-free reprieve...

Warnings: mention of cannibalism, mention of traumatic injuries, violence, war

Yona and Hak are back in Kouka to try to stop Soo Won from marching on Xing and giving Xing’s Princess Kouren a reason to start a war. They have come to Ogi, an acquaintance from their childhood and a smuggler of sorts, for help in contacting Soo Won and meet with him face to face, though their efforts go largely to waste as he insteads sends an envoy, who happens to be the same boy that helped Yona and Hak escape the palace on the night of Soo Won’s attack. As Soo Won accelerates his attack plan for Xing, Yona goes to seek help with another ally, and Hak rushes to Wind Tribe while asking them to defy Hiryuu palace’s orders; Wind Tribe being the closest to Xing, they would be the point of attack. Meanwhile, back in Xing, creepy Five Stars kid Mizari is helping out the Four Dragons, but they are also unnerved by his desire to have their powers at any cost.

It is certainly interesting to have Yona directly involve herself in the country’s politics, and to use her power as a princess to subvert Soo Won’s power. While it is not a power struggle yet, it sure seems to be heading that way - with Yona asking for help from her allies, the division of loyalties in the empire may soon become clear. Mirroring this in Xing, due to the Wind tribe’s attempts to make friends with the Xing soldiers camped at the border, and the actions of Mizari, the pro-war faction is seeming to cool down a bit. Additionally, Mizari’s twisted logic regarding power seems to be shocking Kouren as well; would it be too optimistic to hope she will come to her senses by seeing how the war is a really bad idea? Though, with Soo Won being gung ho about resolving the matter with Xing in this way, seems like it would be too little too late.

Finally, quick aside: Yona took initiative OMG! Hak's face was priceless!

Hak and Yona do their best to try and set up a meeting with Su-won in order to negotiate peace between Kohka and Xing.

I'm so blown away by this volume. Kusanagi really took this arc to places I was not expecting and it was amazing being reunited with so many old faces. I never expected to see the hero from volume 1 ever again, so that was an especially pleasant surprise. I love how this volume pulled together past story arcs, making them unexpectedly important to the story. There's just such a solid foundation built with this series and I commend Kusanagi for the planning that must have gone into it. I do worry about the potential consequences for those who helped out our heroes though, and I'm still really concerned about the dragons and Yun. I feel like the stakes are pretty high right now, and it seems like every effort our heroes put in just isn't enough.

Also, I'm wondering who thought it was a good idea to teach fighting skills to a guy who doesn't seem to think particularly rationally, and a guy who smashes everything before asking questions? I'm so confused. And I really don't understand Su-won right now. Maybe I'm oversimplifying things, but I'm under the impression Xing does not have a lot of military strength, so I don't really see how adding them to Kohka would help defend anything, plus the expenses and lives going into this war, I feel like they could be used elsewhere.

We also got a romantic development that I've been waiting for for the past 10 years I wish I was exaggerating, so that was AMAZING. But I mean, the real highlight of that was the aftermath that it brought about, poor Hak.

And apparently I need an appearance from the Wind Tribe in order to give a volume the full five stars. I just love them so much, but especially how much they love Hak.

“This person, after leaving the castle, just how much has she accomplished? […] She changes things. The princess has touched Lord Tae-jun. And my gloomy heart, not to mention Kouka Kingdom itself. She is trying to start something, something incredible, that involves the entire country. All this person has done is earnestly trying to protect her friends and the people right in front of her. And yet the people around her, in hopes of doing something for her, stretch out their hands. Perhaps even the king has not realized this. Isn’t this a terribly formidable power?”

This volume is the very epitome of taking my heart out and stomping on it a million different ways, from love that ached in my bones, from fear beyond measure, from pride and satisfaction, and then just leaving it there to bleed over everything.

It is certainly more than unfair how so many things just happen and then we are expected to wait for their resolution, just like that. It is not good for my health, that's for sure.

All of the characters have my heart, and they all are in such situations that it makes it really hard to not be terrified for each and everyone one of them. Even though things are starting to untangle themselves, the storm hasn't passed yet and it's incredibly unnerving.

“I don’t want to live a life fueled by hatred. I want to stop this war, which is just another link in this chain of hatred.”

One thing is for certain, though, any time anyone reflects on how far Yona has come my heart melts a little bit because it has been one incredible, epic, and inspiring story to see; seeing her come into her own.

With stakes as monumentally big as they are, well, it provides a good contrast to make her character shine in all the splendor she has gained with blood, sweat, courage, and determination. Though she has shined just as brightly in smaller conflicts.

However, it is starting to become clear or, rather, to shine a light upon the problem of how things are going to end, and things certainly seem to be coming to a head.

“A war in which I personally have no stake is meaningless […] A peace won by hurting people, leaves a bad taste in your mouth, doesn’t it?”

As much as I love seeing the character development side of things, that is certainly not the focus point of this arc, just heavily woven into it. No, the focus is the war that is brewing and, more importantly, how to avoid it.

From the beginning, the dichotomy of war and peace, of how to protect without falling into warmongering, of when it's right to use violence and force, and how has been at the center stage of the thematic conflict of the story and while we have come a long way to answer such a complicated question, when the scales are this big, what can be the answer?

The near impossibility of that question is what we're confronted with and it tears my heart out all the nuanced and raw ways, appealing and reasonable as they are, that we have come to explore them.

“A war in which I personally have no stake is meaningless […] A peace won by hurting people, leaves a bad taste in your mouth, doesn’t it?”

That being said, there are two very distinct moments that stole my breath, for completely different reasons, and I need to revisit them again.

First, how am I expected to see that moment between Yona and Hak and be normal about it afterward? I swear, I could feel my heart leaping out of my chest because I was not expecting it to happen any time.

Then, there's that cliffhanger. While it is an echo of something that has happened before, more than once, it couldn't have been in worse circumstances and in a worse way.

And while it doesn't quite enter into those heartstopping moments, seeing the Wind Tribe again like this was nothing short of heartwarming and touching. I had missed them so much.

“The kids in Fuuga, from the moment they become conscious of their surroundings, they have a certain saying inscribed in their very souls. No matter how incredible the heavens may be, no matter how distinguished the king may be, there is but one person who stands at the top as our leader. ‘Lord Hak’s words are absolute!’”

"If you ever need help, the wind tribe will be at your side no matter who stands against us."

Táto časť mala všetko, čo som od série chcela. Pri stretnutí so starými postavami mi poskočilo srdiečko, napätie medzi Yonou a Hakom bolo priam hmatateľné a draci boli skvelí.

"For the kids od Fuuga, as far back as we can remember, there's one truth we all have etched into our souls. No matter how amazing the Heavens are, no matter how superior a king might be, there is only one person who stands above us. What lord Hak says goes without question!" the loyalty ❤️

Definitely setting up things to come soon, which I am highly anticipating. But Yona's growth throughout the series has been so strong, she really has transformed as a character. And can we talk about her bold little move ... blushing like Hak was.
