Narayan Gopal Dharap ( August 27 , 1925 - August 18 , 2008 ; Pune , Maharashtra ) was a Marathi language writer, dramatist. It is mainly known for horror stories and mystery stories. The fictional character "Samarth" created by him and the mystery stories based on him became particularly popular.

ह्या निमित्ताने धारपांची 'अ'भयकथा पण वाचण्याचा योग आला. ग्रहण. नाव वाचून अशी धारणा करून घेतली की ग्रहणाशी संबंधित भयकथा असेल. Concept ठीक आहे, आणि त्याचं नवंपण काही पानातच संपलं. पूर्ण कादंबरी एक लघुकथा लिहून तिला TV सिरीयल सारखं फाकवल्यासारखं वाटतं.
काही writing devices वापरता आले असते, जसं की unreliable narrator, nonlinear storytelling, flashbacks, different point of views वगैरे. पण हे सगळं सोडून पण जे वापरलं आहे, ते कंटाळवाणं आहे. काही नव्या वाचकांना, ज्यांचं लक्ष वाचनात लागत नसेल, किंवा वाचायला एखादा आठवडा लागला असेल त्यांना ही आवडू शकते. एखादी गोष्ट होतानाचं वर्णन, मग नायिका ती दुसऱ्या पात्रांना सांगतानाचे संवाद, ह्यानंतरही तिच्या मनातले विचार ह्या सगळ्यांमध्ये एकच गोष्ट खूप वेळा परत परत सांगितलेली आहे. हे जरा कमी असतं तर थोडं वाचताना अद्भुत काहीतरी घडतंय असं वाटलं असतं.

I was drawn towards this book because a TV serial based on this is currently being telecast on a marathi channel. Another reason was the author. Dharap was one of marathi's most famous thriller/horror writers and his story-telling is quite addictive. Sad to say this book didn't excite me that much. The premise of it is fantastic. It is about a woman, whose house mysteriously vanishes one evening and with it her whole identity is erased. The story starts well and we are taken on a bizzarre roller-coaster ride as the mystery deepens further. But the end is a complete let-down. It could have been well thought-out. It feels like this story had so much potential but doesn't live upto the hype. Dharap has written a lot of better books than this, for sure.

A story that begins with promise and ends lame

The start of story made me read the book. But page after page the melodrama continues without any proper reasoning or even a slightest of direction towards conclusion. It ends like a typical movie.. happy endings.. with lot of unanswered questions for reader.

झी मराठी वर या कादंबबरीवर आधारित सिरीयल सुरु झाल्यावर उत्सुकतेपोटी हे पुस्तक विकत घेतले होते पण सिरीयल चे सुरुवातीचे काही भाग आवडले नसल्याने पुस्तक वाचायचे राहून गेले. त्यातल्या त्यात काही वाचकांकडून संमिश्र प्रतिर्क्रिया आल्याने मी पुस्तक तसेच सिरीयल न पाहतच सोडली. पण अचानक एक दिवस पुस्तक आवारावर करताना सापडले आणि चला वाचूयात म्हणून हाती घेतले.
पुस्तकाची मूळ थीम माहित असल्याने फारशा अपेक्षा नव्हत्या पण वाचताना आपण कथेत गुंतून गेल्याचे जाणवले. पुस्तकाची सुरुवात खूपच रंजक होते आणि वाचकाची उत्सुकताना ताणून धरण्यात लेखक यशस्वी झाले आहेत.
पुस्तक पाहिल्यान्दा 2001 साली प्रकाशित झाले होते आणि समांतर विश्वाची कल्पना मराठी वाचकांसाठी त्यावेळी नवीन असेल. नारायण धारप यांच्या इतर पुस्तकाप्रमाणे इथे जादू टोणा किंवा भुताटकी नाहीये. याला आपण विज्ञान कथा पण म्हणू शकत नाहीत. मी याला फॅन्टसी गूढकथा म्हणेन.
सुरुवातीचा रंजकपण थोडा ओसरल्यावर कथा उत्तरार्धात थोडी रटाळ होते पण लेखकाने त्याच्या नेहमीच्या शैलीला छेद देत शेवट गोड केला आहे.
लेखकाने वाचकांच्या सर्व प्रश्नाचे समर्पक उत्तर न दिल्याने काही लोकांच्या काही गोष्टी डोक्यावरून गेल्या असाव्यात. पण नारायण धारप चे जे नेहमीचे वाचक आहेत त्यांना लेखकाची ही लेखनशैली माहित असल्याने त्यांना समजण्यात काही त्रास होणार नाही अशी आशा आहे.

एक सुखी कुटुंब. एक आई, बाबा आणि त्यांची दोन मुलं.
एके दिवशी मुलं, icecreame चा हट्ट करतात. ती घरून बाहेर निघते, icecream आणायला. Road वर जाताच, भरधाव वेगाने एक गाडी येते, inch भर अंतरावरून सुसाट वेगाने निघुन जाते. थोड्याशाने ती बचावते, दोन मिनिट तिला काहिच सुचत नाही. मग ती दुकानात जाते, icecreame चा Family pack विकत घेते, आणि घराकडे येते. घरासमोरील, footpath वर येते. पाहते तर! घर कुठे आहे?

तिचं घर तिथे नसतं. आजुबाजुला सगळं same, अगदी सारखं. तेच दुकान, तेच दुसरे apartments.. पण तिचं घर गायब. तिचा पूर्ण संसार च गायब.

काय? कसं? कुठे? हे सगळं जाणुन घेण्याकरीता, हे पुस्तक नक्की वाचा. कथेला एक खुप्पच छान असं गुढतेचं वलय आहे.
नारायण धारप हे त्यांच्या अनोळख्या अश्या लेखन शैली करता, प्रसिद्ध आहेत.
भयकथा आणि गुढकथा ह्या शैलीत त्यांचा हातखंडा आहे.

Good story- but printing errors on every single page

Like most other Narayan Dharap stories, it is difficult to stop reading until finished. Very different from the zee Marathi serial- this is mystery and sci fi , not horror.
The only issue is the number of typological errors. There is atleast one on every page ! Also missing spaces, missing punctuation are very annoying. Especially because the original writers language, and punctuation was always top notch and flawless.

मनोविकार आणि परिस्थितीनुसार घडत जाणारी गुंतागुंत आणि रहस्य, धारपांनी त्यांच्या खास शैलीत रचले आहे. कादंबरी अस्पष्ट वळणावर संपते, पण ग्रहण मालिकेचा शेवटचा भाग पहिला आणि त्यात बऱ्याच गोष्टींचा संदर्भ लागतो, त्यामुळे मालिकाकारांचे विशेष कौतुक!

Yes, as loads of earlier reviews suggest, I too was drawn to read this book because of Marathi TV Serial being aired. I just got curious by watching first 2-3 episodes, and when I got to know it was based on this book, I immediately started reading it. Although the story starts with an interesting narration, as you read through, you get more n more curious towards the unfolding of mystery. But when you finish the book, you don't feel like it is the end you expected. It ends on mixed note; main character seems to be adjusting with her new reality, and leaves her past with happy feelings for the good.
