My Slightly Sarcastic But Ultimately Honest Book Rating System:

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (5 Stars): This book achieved legendary status in my personal library. I will likely reread it until the pages fall out (or my e-reader spontaneously combusts). Consider this my enthusiastic endorsement – you should probably read it unless you actively dislike joy.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (4 Stars): A truly excellent read! I enjoyed it immensely and would heartily recommend it to fellow bookworms. You might even catch me subtly pushing it into their hands.
⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3 Stars): Yep, it was a book I read. I turned the pages, absorbed the words, and emerged...unchanged. It was a pleasant enough journey, like a scenic detour that you wouldn't necessarily take again, but didn't regret.
⭐️⭐️ (2 Stars): This book existed. I finished it. That's about the highest praise I can offer. If you're looking for something truly captivating, maybe keep scrolling. This one's more of an "it filled the silence" kind of experience.
⭐️ (1 Star): Oh dear. This book and I did not get along. It was a literary tumbleweed in the vast desert of good books. Consider this a strong "do not recommend," unless you're conducting research on what not to do in storytelling.

Disclaimer: My enjoyment of the narrator is based on my listening speed. I only leave 5 stars for books I've read/listened to or will read/listen to multiple times. If you like this review please consider giving it a Helpful Vote below.

This "Aftershow" is basically just a bonus episode to the "West Cork" true crime series that came out a few years ago about an unsolved Irish murder. A third party journalist interviews the investigative journalist spouse duo who produced the original true crime series, and they reflect on the reception of the series by the general public as well as the two families involved (the victim's and the accused). They discuss certain aspects that they chose not to include in the final series production, as well as ideas for possibly revisiting this story if new evidence or developments come to life.

However, this 30min discussion didn't have anything new to add to the story, and it didn't make the original series any more interesting than it is without this "Aftershow" existing. I really saw this as Audible grasping at straws and running out of ideas of new and interesting Audible Originals to come out with. I just did not see why this existed at all. I listened to the original series, so nothing was spoiled for me by listening to this, and this piece is free for Audible Members, so I did not lose anything financially by listening to this. It was just a waste of my time, and I wish I had listened to a random YouTube video instead or something.

A very strange “update” which gave no further detail (also no spoilers, though a warning was given). This really was the fault of the host, who didn’t direct questions very well. The authors were just as well spoken but basically repeated what we’d heard during the “chapters”.

A large portion of time was given over to discussing the audience, presumed to be American by the host, and the difficultly of understanding the Irish accents, to which the authors had to embarrassingly point out were few and far between in the podcast (the main “cast” was English or Welsh, and I think there were at least as many French as Irish voices). There was a time for Twitter questions which they couldn’t read, so possibly this was done live originally?

Would be more useful if they had waited a month or two so that they could have updated with the fact that Bailey was convicted & sentenced to 25 years in France in May 2019. In October 2020 the Irish High Court denied the extradition request.

Nothing bad, just pointless. Could’ve saved myself half an hour.

I actually listened to the entire podcast as an audiobook on Audible. I couldn’t find the title to list it here (other than this after episode). I thought I was getting an audiobook from Audible, but it turned out to be this entire podcast series disguised as a book. It is not my taste at all. I don’t think I’m a fan of these podcasts that make the readers sympathize with suspects. I care too much for the victims and their families.

This is a mysterious story and leaves everything very unfinished. I hate that we will never know what actually happened.

It's just a follow up to the show, has no impact or weight, also no stakes since we know how the show ended
