Power of Five #3

Trial of Three

Rate this book
Four cords of power. Three trials. Two soul-crushing secrets.

For Lera, training has never been so hard. With the males’ power roaring in her veins and River’s cold demand that she master the magic before the third trial, something has to give. Worse still, River is keeping something from her. Something about his past and Lunos’s future.

For River and Coal, the past must stay buried. Though one male’s nightmare sits on a throne and the other’s hides in his soul, they are equally unprepared for Lera’s startling determination to undress the truth.

But when Mors’s Emperor Jawrar makes a play for Lunos, neither Lera’s fledgling magic nor the males’ old wounds can remain untouched—not if their world is to survive.

TRIAL OF THREE is a full-length reverse-harem fantasy novel, third in the Amazon bestselling, KU-All Star POWER OF FIVE series.

Fun and enjoyable!

In this book the five remain at the Citadel in training for the trials while Lera learns how to use magic. She struggles with it since she is the only mortal at the Citadel as well as the only one who doesn’t have her own magic but has to “borrow” it from her guys.

“What, pray tell, do you want me to do?”
“Hug her,” Coal demands, gesturing toward me brusquely.
“What?” Tye and I say together.
“That’s what you do with females after coupling with them. I don’t. So I’m delegating.”
“One, you can’t delegate hugging, Coal,” I tell him. “And two, what makes you think I even want that from you?”
“I hurt you.” His jaw is tight, his fist seeming ready to strike a wall.
“Yes.” I straighten my shirt. “It was good for me too. Thank you for asking.”

There also is the issue of the Citadel elders who have an agenda for River, the leader of her quint, who is also a prince of one of the three kingdoms. The story is compelling and I find myself wanting to find out how it ends.

It can be said of a lot of things in life Sometimes the more you look forward to something the more of a let down it can be...

I don't want to colour anyone's opinion before it's release or spoil too much but never let it be said I wasn't an honest reviewer even when given a ARC.

3 stars may seem harsh but I am given those based on the other 2 books which were phenomenal and it wouldn't be fair to rate this higher than a 4 when the others were so amazing.
So its pretty highly rated 3 given the basis for comparison

Book 1 - ★★★★
Book 1 - ★★★★★

If I had one word to describe this it would be short
Too short.
At 192 pages it was more book 2.5 instead of book 3

Only 17% of the book dedicated to actual action & adventure my superior maths skills tell me that is only 33 pages of plot development. The rest dedicated to the relationships building.

Now don't get me wrong I luurvvv the romance and all things smutty.

...and I do believe I was firmly in the camp "you can't have enough of a good thing" but there is only so much "clenching" "damp underthings" and "slickness between her thighs" at everything any of the quint says.. I can read without rolling my eyes
And we are at Maximum capacity here folks

Poor Leralynn has a hard time in this one, with the continued training and breaking through that tough outer shell some of her guys have. I wanted to punch them ...hard but that would only have resulted in a broken Kindle so I had to leave it at screaming internally

We've established the baddies and the quint is moving onward as a unit instead of all the secret keeping and protecting - which was frustrating to no end.
If we look at this as a novella and book 2.5 instead of 3 then what we have is a HOT short story which leaves us in a better position for the next one to come.

So all in all it wasn't as exciting or as long as I wanted but it did move forward. It wasn't bad.. not by any stretch.. just not as good as the previous 2
Would i still recommend it Hell yes
Will I continue Duh of course

So ergo ....

The bar was set too high and we need more

Also.... SHADE where the hell have you gone! I needed more of you too

More more more! More pages, more Shade, more action next time

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-review nonsense
It's here! It's here, my ARC is hereeeee!!

I hate it rub it in but

I NEED THE FOURTH BOOK!

Okay, so first off, I totally thought that this was the last book of the series. Now that I know that there's going to be a fourth book next year.. I'm sad that I have to wait. I just want to know what's going to happen. I need to know what is going to happen to the quints, specifically.

So many secrets come out in this book. One, I still don't trust Klarissa and I feel like that's the main theme for each book right now. Two, River has way too many god damn secrets and needs to come clean ASAP. Three, his dad (the king) is a crazy guy and on the bad guys team. Four, Coal is a fucking sex god and I loved their smutty scenes. Five, I whole-heartedly (?? IS THAT A WORD??) ship Autumn and Kora (I think that's her name.. but right now I'm 100% focused on football.. and that's where I'm leaving it).

I'm also not going to lie.. there's a ton of smut in this book. The guys are getting closer to Lera and some of the scenes are filled with way too much sexual tension and amazing chemistry. HOWEVER, it's also filled with one god awful and cringe-worthy sexual experience. I prayed to my sweet baby jesus for that guy to have a redemption day because that was just too weird to read at 1am. Trust me, it was.

THANKFULLY, HE REDEEMED HIMSELF. I also don't like how these books end. There's no cliffhanger.. just and ending. It's beyond frustrating and yet I still can't wait to dive into the next book. I hope it's amazing and I hope I get to see some bow chika chika wow wow moments between Lera and Tye.

I love this series so damn much! And I can't wait for the next book. Seriously, when is it coming out?? Hopefully soon! :)

After only a few pages, I remembered almost everything that happened in the first two books since I've been apart from this story only a couple months.

What can I say about this book except you have to read it if you like the Reverse harem trope.

We still follow Lera and her Quint. She's getting closer to all the members in her Quint (and that was awesome and really hot, especially with Coal). Klarissa is still a bitch . We also get to meet the bad guys and I'm sure there will be some epic battle in the next book.

Anyway, I really enjoyed reading this book and I hope you will too.

***3.5***

I like it, but ...

Well, there are a lot of buts. Firstly, we're three books in, and I feel like very very little has happened. Who is Lera? Why can't she remember her childhood, or anything prior to being bought by Zake at ... what was it we were told? Twelve years old? Where did she come from?

Secondly, there are some story elements that feel very contrived to me. For example, if you're going to take this uber badass team and tell them that they are puny new first trials - and expect them to accept being treated like that by the Council and by the other quints - then you can't ALSO force them to teach classes. That's ridiculous, and so obviously contrived to cause drama with Tye and Lera that it makes me like the story less. It doesn't make any sense, nor is it believable that the quints happy to order them around and make them fetch dishes would then also accept them as teachers. Come on now.

Additionally, I hated the first connection between River and Lera. There's no other way for me to say it: I hated it.

I guess I just feel like ... these books are on the short side, and rather than getting story or character development, we are getting contrived side-bullshit. Or weird about-faces, where after dealing with the Elders that are clearly self-serving assholes only interested in their own power, now we're supposed to accept them as allies who know what they are doing. No. They don't know shit. I'm sorry, but just no. They, at the end of book 2, were like oh, well, had you told us she was a weaver we could have helped. I'm sorry assholes, but YOU are the one that put the marks on them that indicated she was a weaver. The quint didn't know, because there's never been one - it is only theoretical. If anyone should have recognized the mark, don't you think it should have been, oh I don't know, maybe the Council of Fucking Elders?? But instead they act like the quint has kept this from them, when they are the only people who could have conceivably known what the fuck was going on. Now they're pretending like they know how to help train her, but again, they haven't got the first goddamn clue. How Lera actually connects to the magic - it is so far the opposite of how the Elders have been pushing them that it makes the Council look like damn useless morons.

Furthermore, there's a good case to be made that the Council is responsible for Why haven't they been overthrown? They fucking suck at their job, and are utterly useless ... while being remarkably full of themselves. And despite continually praising themselves as the most powerful quint in Lunos, we've never seen them actually FIGHT. Fucking useless.

I'll finish it, since there is one book left, but ... I'm a lot less enthusiastic. I like it less and less each moment I think about it, honestly.

This book was as short as the list of things I’ve accomplished today.

Hint: very short

WHAT THE EVER LOVING FUCK.

First off, I need a recap every now and then. Some books I remember clearly what they are about. Others are muddled and foggy and all I can remember is that I liked the series.
So yeah, this was one of those. I spent the entire 208 pages trying to remember half the shit going on.

Second on, nothing happened. This was the buffer book. I mean yeah there was some hot sex and development in the relationships. But not much more past that. There was ONE mild battle scene where I thought the author was really gonna fuck with me and drop some cliffhanger ending shit.
Nope. THAT didn’t even happen.

Thirded, I am sad. My OCD is furious. HOW ARE YOU GONNA MAKE A QUINT, read that again: A FUCKING QUINT. As in 5. Five. Cinco. Cinq. F I V E. theme INTO A FOUR. Read that again: 4. Four. Cuatro. Cuatre. Four + Tris forever. F O U R book series??????????
Are you insane?
Why isn’t it a five book series to go along with the quint theme?!

Again, MY OCD IS MAD.
There is so much shit to wrap up in book 4. It fucking better be longer than 200 pages, ALEX.

Okay that is all.

**You can see this full review and more at Book Briefs: https://bookbriefs.net**Please Note: This is the fourth and final book in the Power of Five series and this series needs to be read in order.
If you are new to the series, check out my review of Power of Five, my review of Mistake of Magic  and my review of Trial of Three for more information

Lera of Lunos is the fourth and final book in the new adult fantasy romance Power of Five series by Alex Lidell. You all know how much I LOVE this series! It is one of my favorite series of all time. Of all time people!  I feel like this is the type of series that I can read over and over again and love it just the same every time. Even though I have unequivocally loved all three of the other books, I was super nervous to start Lera of Lunos. Not because I didn't think I wouldn't love the book, but because I was not ready for the series to end. (I hate reading the last book in series. Am I the only one?)  Finally I pulled on my big girl panties and started reading this book, and of course, once I did, there was no turning back for me. I loved this book. Books one and three were still my favorite in the series, but this series as a whole is so good. So so good.

In case you are new to this series, Power of Five series  is a fae fantasy and it is the story of a group of four elite fae warriors, who have been searching for years for the fifth member that will complete their warrior quint. They are all shock to find it is a human girl named Lera. Lera and her fae are forced to undergo the trials that all quints must face in order to become a warrior unit. We also get to explore more about the magic that binds Lera's quint together and the uniqueness of their bond. I love unraveling the secrets of this world. In the last book, we got to see a reveal of who the big bad villian was, and we had a very action packed ending. The action continues on in Lera of Lunos, with Lera having to explore more of her weaving abilities.

Another great aspect of this novel is that we finally got to see more to Tye. In the first three novels, Tye was a big jokester. So much so, you might think that is all there is to his character. But you would be so very wrong to think that. We really get to take a look into Tye's past and learn more about why he is the way he is. And his conection with Lera finally deepens past the easy go lucky feel good guy. Tye has depth, and it was really nice to finally be able to see that. I am still holing firm with Coal as my favorite, but really the whole quint together is pure magic. Each of the guys, as well as Lera, bring something different to the quint as a whole. I love seeing them work together and just seeing them interact together. They do a great job at balancing each other out. And speaking of balance- Lera of Lunos was a great balance of story progression, crazy action, surprises and romance. I wish this book was much, much longer, but I was happy with the way everything turned out. I am still holding out hope for a bonus fifth book about Lera and her guys, but I don't have any indication from the author that will be happening. (but please do make it happen Alex! Pleassssseeeeeee!!!!)

Fans of new adult fantasy romances do not want to miss this series because it will soon join your favorites shelf. As a reminder, there are multiple love interests in this series, but if you are unsure of how that will play out, just read the book! I promise you will be a convert and you will immediately fall in love with Lera, River, Coal, Tye, and Shade. I cannot get enough of this series! Everyone needs to read it immediately. (It is free on Kindle unlimited, so if you are a KU member, go grab this book this instant! If you are not a kindle unlimited member, still grab book 1- it is free on amazon right now!) One of my favorite reads of 2018 and 2019 and one of my favorite series of all time! This review was originally posted on Book Briefs

A 3.5 star book.

I really do enjoy this RH series, it is one of the better ones, but this one was first short and over capacity in the smutty terms, don't get me wrong I love smutty, I just also wanted more action.

I am ready for the story to move on and see some progress with Lera controlling her powers.

All in all a great book and I would definitely recommend this series to RH lovers.

Why am I still reading this series, I don't know.
This is like a good yet slightly bad romcom, that just makes you feel all the feels even though you know that it's totally unrealistic and ridiculous.
But I enjoy it B)

This book begins with a bang. And just keeps going. (It's 3:00 AM so my brain is throwing out automatic weaponry vs revolver analogies, but since I know almost nothing of guns this could end up nonsensical.)

Everything about this book is just more. More action, more scheming villains, more sex, more emotions, more moments that had me laughing hysterically.  I am not sure how Alex Lidell makes each book better than the previous, but it is an impressive skill.

Fans of RH are going to love this installment.

ARC received in exchange for an honest review - thank you!

3.5 stars.

It pains me to give anything by Alex less than a solid 4 at least, but I feel like it was in this book that I began to realise how much the qoru/Gloom plot just doesn't work for me. I know I'll be in a tiny minority, but I find it kind of flat and highly forgettable. I started skipping pages to get to where this book really shines - the relationships.

Lera is sweet but forgives WAY too easily. The good news is, the forgiveness didn't have anything to do with Klarissa the cliched OW, so even though I thought River should have grovelled more I'm ultimately okay with it. This book dials the steam up quite a bit (FINALLY) though Tye still doesn't get a look-in yet.

(Has anyone else noticed this pattern? How it's' the seductive types that the authors are making us wait ages to see a proper sex scene with? First Aros, now Tye…)

The humour is back! Which is great. On the whole, I don't regret having read this book, even if it was weaker than the last two.

So here is a thing about all these reverse harem books, they start off wonderfully and then proceed to take nose dive which is just sad. When you read the first one there is so much hope and potential.

So we are three books into the series, there is not actual substantial growth of relationships except the h has sex with the other Hs which can not be called growth per se... Nonetheless, the trials and tribulations all blend into one another as you try to find the theme of the plot which is also non-existent. But am I expecting better..

All these technicalities and 'flourishes' to the story is very last minute as well as rushed but I mean you know what you are getting into. A guarantee that in a couple of years it will all be a mush in your head, nothing memorable.

3.5 stars rounded down to 3 stars
Continuing with this series.

So far, I've enjoyed this series. My biggest issue in this book is the relationship between the quint. None of them seem to do anything together as a group - including Lera, lol. Everything is in twos, mostly - occasionally threes but not fives (except when traveling and in convo). This includes trainings.

Also, that first sex scene was sooooo fucking PAINFUL to read. O_O Although

*I received a free copy of this book which I voluntarily chose to write an honest review for.

OMG I so love this book!!! Each new installment just keeps getting better and better even when I think there is no way that would be possible. Instead Lidell has to prove me wrong with this awesomeness that just makes me love Lena and her men even more! This is must read series so if you haven't read it yet why not? I give it 5/5 stars since I couldn't put it down at all.

Lera and her quint have discovered that she is a "weaver" of their magic. Unfortunately, she can't get the hang of controlling it and the elders are getting impatient with their group's lack of progress. Meanwhile, an area in Blaze is infiltrated by the Mors and Klarissa tries to get River to check it out. He refuses, but she ends up manipulating the entire quint into going there as part of their 3rd trial.

The plot moves forward quite a bit in this 3rd installment of the series. Even though Lera struggles with control, we learn more about how the group is bonded together. We also learn more about the realm politics and specifically, River's role in it in the past. And yes, there is more smut between Lera and her quint-mates, some of it surprisingly awkward.

I thought this would be the final book of a trilogy, but it turns out not to be the case. I've got to wait for the next installment to see what happens with Lera, her men, and the new dangers they face together.

It feels like Alex Lidell wrote this third book in the series just for me. I was beyond thrilled by multiple things that happened in the book in the romance department and that alone earns the high star rating for me - and made it my favorite book of the series. The writing of this author's books flows so easily and it makes the reading experience a very relaxing, enjoyable one for me. This series takes me back to the fantasy books of my youth, with the added reverse harem element making it all the better.
It does seem like the romance part of the story takes center stage in this book, over the fantasy elements, so if you prefer the fantasy you might be disappointed with how much romance there is, but I sure wasn't. There were a couple of real LOL moments - and I rarely LOL so I loved that. I'm looking forward to the villains getting their comeuppance (especially that manipulative Klarissa) and to Lera learning how to control and use her weaver power. To say nothing of ever more with all of these heroes I love so much (Coal still has the slight edge, but it is nigh impossible to have a favorite in this series).

I like this series, but I’m left wanting more of the story to actually come through and progress. Nothing happened until the last few pages of this book.

I don’t mind the romance most of the time, but it’s starting to almost become tedious to read. Also I, personally, feel more love for the quint outside of those scenes when they feel more like actual characters with distinct personalities. Something about them seems to majorly shift during the steamy bits and they become like different people.

I still like these books overall. I just can’t help but feel very disappointed. I just want a little bit more from the story, but it’s still an okay series.

Building on the last book. Lera is put through her paces with trying to figure out how to use her weaver power and harness the magic of the quint. She becomes more intimate with Coal and River during this book which strengthens her bonds with them and their magic and allows her to connect with Coal through positive memories rather than his nightmares.
The quint are thrown into their 3rd trial when one of the other quints doesn’t return. This has huge impacts for River as it takes the quint to the lands ruled by his father. When it turns out his father is working with the emperor to invade Lunos and they are captured, this results in Lera using her power to help free them.
I enjoyed seeing the development of the relationship with Coal and River and seeing them being more vulnerable. Looking forward to the next in the series. I’ve given it 3.5⭐️ as I feel the series could be condensed and each book have more in it.

A lotttt of stuff happened. River's father was found to be plotting with Mors, Blaze was attacked, the quint underwent their third trial, and Lera's magic is growing more powerful.

We are finally getting to know the males past, and see their love for Lera grow. Coal is definitely the tortured soul of the group, and I like him a lot. I loved his and Lera's moment together. River finally thawed out towards Lera and started letting her in. He truly is a softie underneath the cold mask he wears everyday. Shade's wolf is hilarious and Tye was just as charming as he usually is. I really want to know more about him though. There is more to him than most people see.

She learned to fight. She learned her worth. But can she learn to love? Will River and the others trust and see the strength Lera has? They have to stop sugar coating things cause she’s human. We’re a lot tougher than they think.
Again, Cole is the only one willing to push her but only so far.
River needs to stop overthinking and start living.
This part in the series is a little slower but just as enjoyable.
