Kevin regularly references this book, referring to it as the backbone or bible of the Marine Corps- thus I felt it about time to give it a read. The first portion of the book has striking parallels to the Art of War, common mandatory reading for an undergraduate philosophy class- but was uniquely applied to the distinct standards the Marine Corps holds for their philosophy on war & preparing for war. The second half of the book was structure more around the mindset and psychology of leadership, structure, and stability that comes from a demand for excellence, precision, ability to think critically under demands at every level.

Some quotes I liked:
“Of course, a subordinate’s willingness to admit mistakes depends on the commander’s willingness to tolerate them”

“Our critiques should focus not so much on the actions we took as on why we took those actions and why they brought the result they did”

“There are two dangers with respect to equipment: the over-reliance on technology and the failure to make the most of technology. Technology can enhance the ways and means of war by improving humanity’s ability to wage it, but technology cannot and should not attempt to eliminate humanity from the process of war”

“Second, key people - ‘actuals’ - should talk directly to one another when possible, rather than through communicators or messengers. Third, we should communicate orally when possible, because we communicate also in how we talk - our inflections and tone of voice. Fourth, we should communicate in person when possible because we communicate also through our gestures and bearing” **(how to communicate implicitly)
