I've been making up stories since I was five years old, and now I'm thrilled to be able to do it as a full-time job. I have an obsession with dark fantasy, dystopian futures, and Pride and Prejudice-style love stories full of witty banter and sizzling, unspoken feelings. When I'm not writing, I'm creating digital art, reading funny blogs, or watching my favorite shows (which include TVD and BSG). I live with my geeky husband and our two bad cats in Atlanta, GA.

With this new book, we start exploring deeper into some alternate POVs. Particularly Prince Jehn’s, which was fascinating. I liked seeing his perspective on Kael, how close of a bond the two of them share. The whole book did a good job of humanizing a character who was difficult to like previously, and I might even be starting to really root for him. His dynamic with the Queen of Nyr is super intriguing.

And yes . . . we got a lot more Auberon this time, which made me happy! He’s trying to rescue his sister, trying to win over Briand, trying to not be selfish and villainous and . . . I just love him in all his struggles. I liked the admissions that happened in this book, and my shipping loyalties might be altering course rather dramatically these days!

But I do still love Kael. And I’ve been following him and Briand for so long now, it’s hard not to want to see them get the resolution they both long for. I don’t know! The angst! (And I’m living for it!)

This book felt seriously short . . . but I think that’s just because I was so caught up in the characters and adventures, it flew by! And at least I know I can dive right into book 7.

The only issue I had was that this was just far too short.

Ohhhhh, but I just loved every bit of it!

It is hard to say who my favorite characters are when there are so many that have grown on me. Nath is still #1 on the list along with Briand, Auberon and now Jehn.

Ellison gives us a few different perspectives in A Court of Lies. The one I found most interesting was Jehn's. We get a glimpse into him in A Shield of Sorrow, for the most part he has been a mystery in the series. We learn that he is a bit of a recluse, in terms of his relationship with others. The only person he considers a close friend and even family is Kael. Seeing a more human side of him is so unexpected. He is suffering from PTS from his ordeal with the pirates, along with dealing with the pain from losing his finger and also he is constantly trying to outwit the Queen of Nyr who he finds fascinating.

We are reunited with Auberon on a quest to help save his sister from the sinister seeker prison. It seems he always does something so selfish that it ruins whatever good opinion Briand had of him. Because really, they need to be together. I don't care, I still think he is wonderful!

Yes, Kael is still growing on me, but I still think he isn't the one for Briand. There were some hints that he knew Auberon's sister...so there is hoping, right?

I mentioned that this was far too short, right? So much happened in what felt like such a short book. I will now resume my countdown until book 7.

This has got to be my favorite book of this series so far. I love that we finally have a Briand and Kael reunion that didn't break my heart, Auberon showed up and we finally learn that he is in love with a certain dragonsayer (ugh, can you just admit the truth that you want friends and you're envious of other people and FINALLY HAVE SOME FRIENDS!!), Jehn and the queen of Nyr are going to be my next favorite couple that I'm rooting for (that is if they get past their own selves/holding themselves back), and we get the gang back together while Briand realizes that she has a tribe full of friends, with maybe Auberon and Jade to join in some time in the future as well? This book was a ride from start to finish.

But that ending though! Agh, I can't believe it! or actually I can, Jehn is a master at plans and manipulation, but it does make me wonder why they need another vial of poison to make another dragonsayer. Is it because Jehn can't control Briand? Are they going to need a whole new army of dragons/dragonsayers to defeat Cahan and restore Jehn's place on the throne? Does it have to do with besting the queen of Nyr somehow? and why did the Seekers have it in the first place?

A Court of Lies, it was a very fitting name for what exactly transpired in this whole book and what is yet to come. For a very important decision that Briand and Kael decided that there would be no more secrets amongst each other, and she told him about why she was going to kill him to help Jehn win the war, it makes me wonder if Kael told Briand about the poison, and the real reason Jehn agreed for them to go on the mission and save Auberon's sister from the Seeker prison. But still, I look forward to next book and what's in store for Briand and co. as they fight the war against Cahan.

Kate Avery Ellison, who is the author of the Frost series now has a series is called The Kingmaker's War. In the first installment of the Kingmaker's War, A Gift of Poison", our heroine, Briand is an orphan, living with her cruel Uncle, and barely getting by on her own. She is viewed as the castle troublemaker and has earned the nickname "Guttersnipe". Briand's actions get her banned from the castle, on the verge of being sent to the woodlands, when she discovers her cousin is involved with a secret society. Briand uncovers powers she did not know she was capable of and ends up a member of the secret band of rebels. The country is at war. A war between the "true" Prince who is living with his court in exile and the usurper Prince who is ravaging the land leaving in his wake destruction and death. The rebel leader of this secret society, Kael, enlists Briand to aid in their efforts to defeat the evil Prince and his army of evil Seekers.

As the series progresses you learn that Briand takes a stand, refusing to actually join the rebel of forces of the exiled Prince, while continuing to aid them on their missions. She eventually meets the Prince, who we learn is devious and untrustworthy in-spite of the fact that he maintains the unrelenting faithfulness of his followers; a prime example of this unwavering loyalty being Kael. No story is complete without a love triangle.....of sorts or at least I think it wants to be a love triangle. Briand and Kael fall in love. A long the way Briand develops a love hate relationship with a Seeker. A Seeker is an individual with special powers - be they the ability to heal, read other's minds, etc. The Seekers are tools of the Monarchist's cause and work for the evil Prince. The Seeker Auberon and Briand have formed an unwanted connection. At points in the story they become unlikely allies, working together to solve a shared problem, and yet at the end of the alliance each looks for opportunity to betray the other. The reader learns that Auberon has had a troubled past. I am going to just come out and admit I am full-on team Auberon. I think I have a thing for bad boys. Don't get me wrong, I love Kael and all his goodness, but Auberon is a troubled bad boy looking for someone to understand him. If we are being honest Auberon and Briand share a lot of similar life experiences and can relate on a level she cannot with Kael. A couple of times now Ellison has lead me to believe that something special was building between Briand and Auberon but I am really starting to wonder if the romance isn't all in my head. I guess we will see.

Right now there are 6 completed books in the Kingmaker's War with book 7 due out October 29th, 2018. I read the first 4 books in two days. The story drew me in from the first sentence. As a bonus these books are available via Kindle Unlimited.

Books in the series:

A Gift of Poison (Book 1)
A Bed of Blades (Book 2)
A Kiss of Treason (Book 3)
A Circle of Flames (Book 4)
A Shield of Sorrow (Book 5)
A Court of Lies (Book 6)
A Reign of Thieves (Book 7 - Due Out Soon)

Grammar - 3
There are a few minor grammatical issues with these books. It is not overwhelming but a couple of times I found myself re-reading a sentence. Words were missing or in the wrong place. If this is something you find to be problematic then it might be an issue for you but in the grand scheme of things it was not a deal breaker.

Plot - 4.5
I love the story. A young woman who has had to struggle in life to survive. She eventually finds herself and her purpose. Along the way she develops her own identity and her own belief system. Briand learns to read, she becomes educated, she learns to fight, she sees the world, she finds a cause that she supports without getting lost in that cause, and she becomes an individual. She takes the skills she used to survive as a young teen and uses those tools to make her mark on the world.

Believability - 4.5
The story is fantasy. It is a wonderfully made up world with dragons and other imaginary creatures. Ellison has built an environment for these characters and creatures to live in. I believe that sometime or somewhere this world and these people could exist.

Cover - 3.5
The covers are nice but don't have that "wow" factor. As a person who has historically been drawn to a book by it's cover I might not have taken a second look if it wasn't for my already familiarity with the author. I loved Kate Avery Ellison's Frost series and was already onboard for the Kingmakers War regardless of the way the covers looked.

Ending - 4.5
The story has not yet concluded so the ending is really not a factor to consider at this point. Each book is definitely not a stand alone. The story flows effortlessly from book to book and a reader needs to read from the beginning to fully understand the storyline.

Price Value - 4.5
For me they were free with Kindle Unlimited and you can't beat free. If you do not have Kindle Unlimited the price is relatively low and the books are well worth the cost.

Overall - 4.5
I am in love with this series. I downloaded the first book when it came out and forgot it was in my kindle until a couple of weeks ago when I rediscovered it Labor Day weekend. I love all the characters, even the ones I don't think I am supposed to. Sometimes when a series has this many books I find one that I will struggle to complete at least one of the books but each book in this series has been truly engaging.

I highly recommend this series and wait with baited breath for the next installment.

To many POV

Having so many POVs going on makes me feel like there isn't enough book. I get used to the way a character thinks, and then all of a sudden, I'm in another characters head. I get short snippets I to other thoughts, and it feels like there just isn't enough story. To have this many POV in a fantasy story, we should have 500 pages per book. We need more time with each character to k ow them intimately, and if we aren't meant to know them intimately, then we don't need to see through their eyes. It's a little jarring.
However, I think I'm just a little on edge because I don't like Kael, and I wish she would see through him. I hope this isn't a book where she clings to him, even when he doesn't treat her right, just because they "love" each other so much. Love doesn't forgive everything. I know he hasn't done anything terrible right now, but he just rubs me the wrong way, ya know?
Anyways, on to the next book because I am completely hooked and HAVE to know what happens next!
*This book is a very mild PG. There is no swearing. A few non detailed kisses happen. And there is bloody violence, but there is no gore.

Thank you for being original!

So after my Sarah Maas addiction..... I was in desperate need to find something else new to read (to break my Fae addiction) & what do you know, every flipping book I read was literally a copy cat writing edition of Sarah Maas I can’t even explain how frustrating & annoying that is! No original writing whatsoever out there any more! And then I stumble across “The Kingmakers War” series! GREAT STORIES, ORIGINAL WRITING!! And you clearly can’t find that anymore!! The only reason that I didn’t give it five stars is because there were some spelling errors throughout the Series but other than that, I’m looking forward to the seventh book in the fall! 👌

As the story becomes more epic and wide ranging, I've realized that much like the characters in the book, I'm here for Briand's story.

Spent a lot of time skimming and skipping around. There are some story telling devices that don't work for me.

Still, as a whole the book delivered an enjoyable experience. And if you like large continent sweeping Lord of the Ring style stories, then this is a great book. Even if you like personal character driven narratives, as I do, there's a lot to enjoy here.

Overall good, but a bit slow

The book was okay. It had a clear beginning, middle and end, but felt like filler. The writer has good instincts to add another love interest and add the Nyrrian court intrigue and love subplot as Kael and Briand would eventually get old. Still struggling to find a reason to buy the series, which I usually do. It’s just so many books. I am much more likely to buy the first and theoretical last, if it exists.

Turning out to be one of the best series I've ever read. A mesmerizing blend of truly likeable, utterly unique characters; descriptive world-building, and a really lovely writing style.

"The sky overhead was a wild, brilliant blue so lonely and cold that it made her bones ache to look at it. The ice kissed the horizon in a silver line as sharp as a blade's edge." I see that. I feel that. And the ability to make me see and feel it is pure.freaking.magic.

Love this!

This whole series thus far has been so amazing. Everytime another book comes out. I'm so excited that I read it in a day! Then I kick myself for not spreading it out a bit! 😅 You are so talented, Kate. I'm 17 and love writing too, but aspire to become better! Love your character development and how you grab the readers attention! Really enjoyed this!

The character of the furtherance has greatly expanded. Briand's is now the thief queen, and dragonsayer. I'm always happy when Auberon is in the books - I like him better. I love how strong Briand is becoming. I don't like how weak Jehn is. I also wish he and lady Valora would become a couple. Probably not, now.

I just want more Dragon talk. It was adorable and we'll written.

Addicted!

Can't stop reading this series! The story and the telling of it are so good I don't want to just rush through it to see how it all ends, as I am often tempted to do with YA fiction. A series worth reading every word of (even with the occasional typo). Essential to be read from the beginning, NOT stand-alones!

The series was entertaining. This book was the best. I would have given it 3.5 stars but the editing was terrible. I would never compare this story to Game of Thrones or to Throne of Glass as others have done. The writing is definitely not George R. R. Martin . It was entertaining.

Another chapter

Another chapter in the sage. It’s becoming too predictable. Someone kidnapped, rescue mission, someone hurt a bit. An enemy who is really a friend, bad guy who deep down in good, someone loves someone but can’t tell them...

Keeps getting better

It is incredibly rare for a series to not become repetitive or predictable by the 6th book, yet here we are. The Kingmakers' War series has gotten better, the writing sharper, the twists even more unexpected.

Just when you think you’ve got a character figured out....when you think you can predict what they’ll do...well, it turns out that can’t. Ever.
