Trauma nurse, Evelyn Watson, married her high school sweetheart two decades ago. Now her soldier husband, Mark, is dead, and her dream home on the West Australian coast crumbles around her—just like her once idyllic life.
Maori Special Forces warrior, Corporal Jamie Turner, barely survived the mission that killed his sergeant. Mark not only saved Jamie’s life, he taught him how to live with honor and showed Jamie what life could be. And nothing will stop Jamie from keeping his promise to his best friend and caring for Mark’s wife.
As Eve pulls together the remains of her world and fights to move on, the man her husband considered a brother rebuilds the only home she’s ever known and shines light into her darkness. Yet as she battles to allow herself to love again, she’s terrified of how far—and how hard—she could fall. Especially if fate steals Jamie away from her.
Please don’t freak out. I’m just your average Aussie romance writer 😜
Allow me the honour of taking you on journeys with tough heroes, tougher heroines, and guaranteed happily ever afters.
My long suffering First Reader and I live in a tiny one wombat town in the hills outside Melbourne, Australia. And when I say one wombat town I really mean it. I see the little girl when walking Bear and Max, my plot and character consultants 🐶🐶
Our little patch of heaven is overrun by a zoo of geriatric rescued animals who eat us out of house and home when not sleeping or guilting us into walks. And we wouldn’t have it any other way.
When not tapping my fingers or banging my head on a keyboard creating happily ever afters, I love spending time with family and friends, cooking, EATING, gardening, renovating our castle, and teaching personal protection.
This was a slow burn love at first sight romance in the great Australian outback. Sounds like an oxy-moron, I know but it's slow burn because their physical relationship is a slow build up. The love at first sight was their emotional connection, that you feel from page one and doesn't let up.
Quick Summary: Olivia is in Austrialia for her big sister's wedding. Having just completed her residency and lined up her dream job in California, Olivia plans to spend as much time as she can with her sister before she leaves her a world away and starts her own exciting new career as a doctor in a top big city hospital.
But there is something magical about Wingarra that sinks bone deep for Olivia. And a certain soon-to-be brother in law too.
Jarrah is a successful and sought after lawyer now, not that trouble making teen desperate to shake the outback dust off. He's acheived everything he wanted, the money, the prestige and all the perks but he's still feeling restless.
These two are sure they know what they want and where their going but meeting the perfect person at the worst time, causes the most bittersweet angst.
What I liked: Slow burn can be a drag if it's too slow. ACoF had a consistant pacing to the story. I enjoyed it because we get both Olivia and Jarrah's POVs and so you really get inside their heads. You know why they do what they do and feel what they feel. It was both sweet and sensual and I felt the growth they went through throughout, rather than just reading about.
I loved Jarrah's family. There is a lot of them and at times I had a hard time keeping them all straight in my head, but I still had a great time reading about them. I'm intrigued by a few of them and can't wait to find out how the Wishing Tree comes into play for each of them.
Memorable Moments: The Wishing Tree - The way the author brings this place to life and infuses it with magic, it was goose-bump inducing. I loved how poignant the moments are and how sacred the feelings are for each individual that comes to the Wishing Tree. It's definitely something special.
Would I recommend? If you like learning new landscapes, have a thing for Aussie accents and love strong family ties, read this book. If you like intense emotional connections and a build up to the smexy times, jump right in. This is part of a series, but I didnt' feel it impacted my enjoyment, having not read the first book, so I'd say it can be read as a stand alone.

A Choice of Fate by Jezz de Silva is the second story in his Outback Hearts series, set in Australia and featuring a diverse family of adopted siblings. This particular romance is about two career oriented people whose devotion to their families has left them with little time for relationships – until they are thrust into a family wedding and find themselves caught up in a whirlwind affair with long term consequences.
Dr. Olivia Williams is ready to see her sister Abi get married to the man of her dreams in the Australian outback. She’s in need of a vacation too, before starting her new dream job back in L.A. A vacation fling would be even nicer – except that the one man she’s attracted to is none other than the best man for the wedding, and brother to her soon to be brother-in-law.
Jarrah Harper, high priced and successful attorney has never forgotten his indigenous roots, or the family that adopted him. Protecting the family’s ranch land in Wingarra is his top priority, as is helping out his family in any way, including being the best man for his brother Ryder’s wedding. Helping see the maid of honor to the family home is the least he can do. Olivia is smart, insightful and super sexy – and definitely off limits. Yet somehow, the warm and comforting atmosphere of home leads both Olivia and Jarrah to throw caution to the winds and indulge in a steamy, no strings attached affair. Olivia has every intention of returning to L.A for her new job, and Jarrah has cases awaiting his attention. Can a vacation romance lead to something more?
I enjoyed this trip into the Australian outback! The setting is authentic and I really enjoy reading about the large and diverse Harper family, as well as the townspeople of Baroona. The author is Australian and writes with a believable voice.
The romance between Olivia and Jarrah moves at a slow pace to start as while they are both attracted to each other, they know that getting involved is not the best plan. Still they can’t resist their attraction to each other for long. Their eventual love scenes are sexy and emotional. There is a tree close to Wingarra that has the reputation for giving psychic visions, which takes the story on a bit of a supernatural bent, though it’s definitely a contemporary romance.
Sometimes the story drags a bit with the tendency to over dramatize the characters internal musings. Also, the cover model does not reflect Jarrah’s appearance as described in the story as an indigenous Australian. But overall, it’s an enjoyable, entertaining, and sexy story with an emphasis on the importance of family. The next story in the series looks to feature one of Jarrah’s sisters and an old ‘frenemy’ of the family. I’m looking forward to continuing the series!
Captivated. That's what the first 3 chapters of this book did to me. They captivated me and I crash landed into the world of Jamie, Evelyn and Mark. My heart burst open for all of them as the author took us from the theater of war, to bureaucratic frustrations in the aftermath, to the gut wrenching grief of a war widow, and the survivor's guilt of a soldier who did everything in his power to save his best friend.
SAS Staff Sergeant Mark Watson died a hero. He gave his life for a worthy cause and he left behind both his beloved wife of 20 years, Eve, and his best friend Jamie. I loved Eve because she was a tough, no nonsense kinda chick that took no shit off anyone, especially Jaime. It didn't matter that he was a huge, gladiator-built super soldier. She put him in his place. The kinship among these two, as well as Mark's sister Maggie, was instantaneous.
Jaime's intention was to fulfill his promise to look after and protect Eve in Mark's absence. Seeing as he had no more living relatives and she was grateful that he gave her much needed closure around Mark's demise, Eve welcomed him into her life with open arms and they soon began the arduous task of restoring the sagging family home that had fallen into disrepair.
This story is set in Australia and I so enjoyed the unique cultural nuances of the environment. As you can imagine, forging a romance between these two was a pretty delicate proposition. They both were grieving for Mark and comforting each other. Jaime was 10 years younger than Eve and there were a few other things going on that you will discover when you read this story. At first they were more like family to each other and the beauty of the way this was written is that you really felt the platonic nature of their relationship.
It does turn romantic though and it's really very sweet. There isn't much sex, unfortunately, but this story is heartwarming and believable with no manufactured angst. It's compelling and pretty good storytelling overall. I give it four stars.
Wow! I really liked this story! This was a pleasant surprise and a great read. I've read Jezz before but really loved this one. It gave me the feeling that I was with the characters in the outback with them. That's tough to do in a book. I felt drawn to the characters, Olivia and Jarrah. Jarrah was quite a man, so many facets to him and I loved all of them. Fancy lawyer with his fancy car and suit and Liv is not impressed. But when he goes home to his tribe, he slides right into that role. That of a brother, son, cousin and one huge family. His dedication to his family, which extended to Olivia as well. He's quite taken with her. Olivia I loved. Right after finishing med school and has the perfect job waiting back for her in LA after she takes a month off to fly to Australia (in coach) for her sisters wedding. She's going to meet this large extended family of the Harpers which seemed like most of the town. She's missed that. They lost their parents when they were teens, Liv gave up things so her sister could thrive and took care of her. When she meets Ryder, and watches Abi fall totally into love with him she can move ahead with her plan. Med school. Ryder and Abi head back to the Outback and that's where Liv ends up for a month. The indigenous have their own wedding customs and the book was so filled with layer upon layer of life there I couldn't put it down and makes me want to explore that much deeper. Above all this is a love story. Olivia and Jarrah have deep feelings for each other. There is a sub plot as well as Jarrah fights big business from trying to buy off indigenous and protected land. As I said, it was almost like I could taste the dust, the constant coating of dust that covered everything. What a great book. It's a 4.5 for me. I loved it and it's a must read. Perfect. It's just perfect.

DAAAAMN do I hate dropping books that are well written.
I really hate dropping books about an Interracial May/December slow burn friends to lovers romance with a caretaker, military beta hero!
And I super-DUPER hate dropping books with a hero and heroine who rock deep POV.
But sadly, I had to quit this one with only thirty-five percent left, and it all came down to an issue of pacing.
For half the book our OTP are friend it up as the story progresses over the course of six months. Because of the long time period, there is a crap-ton of time jumps. So many times jumps, in fact, that when our couple did bust out their heart & pants feelings my brain got "When Did That Happen?!" whiplash.
On the one hand, I get that the book wanted to put distance between the heroine's husband's death and the start of a new relationship, all while having the hero by her side from day one. But on the other hand, this put the romance at a disadvantage because of the necessary time jumps.
At the end of the day, while the book didn't work for me, holy damn the author did! His back list includes 2 other publications and I'll absolutely be reading those. Home had phenomenal characterizations, an amazing sismance, emotionally powerful writing, hilarious character musings, and quality attention to setting, AND I AM HERE FOR ALL OF THAT!
Olivia, a doctor, is loving life. Even more so as she's about to embark on a month-long adventure in Australia before her sister's wedding. When her future brother-in-law's brother arrives at her hotel to pick her up, she begins to think maybe something is missing from her life after all.
Jarrah, a lawyer, has everything, and more, than he could ever ask for. Money, cars, properties, available women, and yet he feels unfulfilled, as if something's missing. And when he sees Olivia, he believes he knows what, or should I say who.
When Jarrah and Olivia arrive at his adopted family's home, everything Jarrah has worked so hard to escape now has a different perspective, making him question why he's vowed to never return to that life. He's worked so hard to ensure his family and their way of life is protected, that he's missed out on his own, not the charade of one he's been living.
As Jarrah and Olivia get to know one another while spending time together, it's becoming harder to resist the chemistry burning between them. But Olivia is heading to LA soon, to her new home, and Jarrah has his own life in Australia. Not to mention, if these two explore their attraction, will it only be a fling or could it be something more permanent? If it's the former, that could make family situations quite complicated in the future.
What happens when two people, connected by their loved ones marrying, discover an intense connection that neither are sure they can continue to resist? Will they choose to indulge? Or ignore it and hope it fades with time? Will Jarrah change his views on his past and embrace the future he can have? Will Olivia realize she can have love and a career? Is a HEA possible?
One-click now and follow along as Jarrah and Olivia must decide what's truly important.

Wow! I'm not sure why this hasn't gotten more exposure, because it's simply fantastic.
Everything was very well written, and it all felt very real, including the characters and the situations. I was blown away by the emotions I had in countless places throughout this book. When I find a book that can tug on my heartstrings and make me smile, I know I've found a winner.
And this book certainly is a winner. I already know I'll buy future books by this author, because I loved her voice, and she told a damn good story. (Also, a truly swoon-worthy, lovable Maori hero!!! *hearteyes*)
The attraction between Jarrah and Olivia developed between emails and Skype sessions, but it was in that first moment of meeting when it combusted and disarmed them in unexpected ways. The lives they lived, or will live as is Olivia's case, are brought into question the more time they spend together.
Olivia's career is everything to her. Years of caring for her sister, scraping by, have paid off. The job she wants is hers. The life she's never had is hers. But this thing with Jarrah... It's throwing a wrench in her plans because what she's feeling is more than just attraction.
Jarrah's practice is his life. The wealth and prestige he's acquired over the years are a testament to his drive and determination. But appearing to have it all doesn't mean actually having it all. Seeing his family through Olivia's eyes is an eyeopener. They're never far from his heart but going home, reconnecting with his roots, with the people that helped him become who he is today, breathed life into his weary soul. Exploring the attraction he feels for Olivia is a plus, but he knows her time in Australia is short. Well, his head knows that. His heart, not so much.
Jarrah and Olivia's story is slow. Their attraction is off the charts but moving past coy looks and flirtations is slow and steady. When they do engage, they burn like propane fed fire. And it brings up the question of where do they go from here? Their hearts long for each other but their plans didn't account for this turn of events. Do they chalk it up as a fling and move on? Is it possible to move on from something this consuming without feeling like you're losing a piece of your heart and soul?
One steady factor between the two books in this series is the Harper family. They're an eclectic bunch, connected because they're family but unique in their own ways. Their love of life, tradition, and each other is all encompassing. That sense of home, that feeling of belonging, that knowledge of always being welcomed, made me cry. In a good way. *smiles* After suffering such a huge loss in my family last year, I really needed this reminder.
This story felt different from Against All Odds. That reminder of how important family is, is one reason why. The second is the reminder that change is okay and can, sometimes, be the best thing to happen. The third is the future doesn't have to be set in stone. There are, is, will be, times when something too wonderful comes along to ignore. In that moment, do you let it pass you by or do you experience it? For Jarrah and Olivia, their story is an experience of these three things. The choice they made to experience each other was enough for their future to be sealed by fate.
I enjoyed this story, more than the first. It spoke to my heart and was a reminder to enjoy what I sometimes take for granted. It's a story I got lost in, a story I can read again. It's a terrific addition to this series, and, in my opinion, a hard one to top for Mr. Silva. But I can't wait for what he writes next.
This book was a mixed bag for me - parts of it I absolutely loved so much it even brought a tear to my eye, while others were so over the top that it detracted from the story. I loved Olivia and loved her story and the sacrifices she willingly made to help with her sister's (Abi) health problems (in book 1).
This novel picks up with Olivia traveling to Australia for Abi's wedding and first meets Jarrah (the groom's brother) in real life....as opposed to their skype conversations and messaging. Olivia immediately is smitten, but is wary of Jarrah's playboy reputation. Before long, Jarrah and Olivia are exploring their relationship, but believe it is just a fling. Jarrah is a hot shot attorney from the city and Olivia is a physician that just completed her residency and about to start her first big job with a big salary - after years of pinching pennies, and she will not do anything to jeopardize it.
I loved the ending to this novel and would have rated the book with five stars based on it, however, some parts of the book were so over top, that I would have rated it a three star. The average left me with four stars. That said, the author is very promising and I am looking forward to his future books. He is on my must read authors' list.
While this novel is part of a series, this is a stand alone novel.
A Choice of Fate by Jezz de Silva Outback Hearts #2
Brilliant romance that took me to Australia, introduced me to wonderful characters and made me care. I enjoyed reading more about the Outback and felt I was there whether by the magical tree, near the huge pond or on the back of a horse. The small community charmed my heart and the Harper family was one I wouldn’t mind calling my own. I did not read book one with Abi & Ryder but that was fine as this story was perfect in and of itself.
Dr. Olivia Williams has gone to Australia to be maid of honor at her sister Abi’s wedding. She has been interacting with Jarrah Harper, best man, via internet trying to get the wedding duties sorted. Both Olivia and Jarrah have felt something through their interactions but know that with distance, careers and so much going on in their lives nothing more than a holiday romance, if that, is likely. The attraction is mutual and instantaneous though a bit of time is taken before action is taken. The end of the month will come and they both know it BUT they make the most of it for as long as they can. They fall in love but the logistics of a HEA are not easily provided for the two…though they eventually do find a way to be together that was more than satisfying to this reader! I look forward to reading whatever this author writes next!
Thank you to NetGalley and Entangled Publishing for the ARC – This is my honest review.
This is my first Jezz de Silva book. While I found the story entertaining, it was a bit hard to get into at first, mainly because I was a bit overwhelmed by the Harper family. There were so many of them I didn't know who's who, and I wonder if it would be easier had I read the first book first. Anyway, once I got over it, it was easier to enjoy the story. I love the slowburn romance between Jarrah and Olivia, and I really love the Harper family dynamics and the whole town of Baroona. I'm especially intrigued by the vibe between Maddie and Jai, and I'll be keeping an eye out for their book.
E-ARC is received thanks to the publisher via Netgalley.
This is the 3rd book I have read by this new author, received as an advanced copy from the publisher. I cannot wait for the next one. I found 'A Choice of Fate' easy to read and to follow the trend in the story. Loved the romance and interaction between the two main characters. He has mastered the art of storytelling and keeps the reader's interest unwavering. It is hard to put the book down once you start reading. Loved the outback locations and contrast to the city life. The high flying handsome wealthy lawyer and the attractive strong willed doctor are a match made in heaven and oh! how the sparks fly. Enjoyed the happy family life and camaraderie going on in the outback homestead. An excellent read and highly recommended.
I absolutely adored everything about this book from the moment it downloaded onto my kindle. The cover is GORGEOUS and so perfectly depicts our hero, Jamie, a scarred veteran with more than a passing (not to mention, pleasing) resemblance to The Rock, Dwayne Johnson. As a Kiwi, the idea the hero was Maori endeared me even more.
Eve was an incredible heroine. Even with all the heartache she had to deal with, she never let it swamp her. Her strength and resilience and faith that life was still worth living in the face of unbearable pain made her someone I wanted to root for. Watching Jamie slowly fall for this incredible woman was beautiful, and the journey the author makes his characters take (and the reader along with them!) through all the emotional highs and lows has a huge payout in the end that left me sighing in satisfaction, and a goofy grin on my face.
Doctor Olivia Williams has arrived from Los Angeles for her sister's wedding, but she never imagined her month-long adventure to celebrate it would have her spending time with Jarrah Harper, the best man for the wedding. The last thing she needs to do is fall in love, not when she has so much to look forward to on returning home where she will start the job of a lifetime, but sometimes life doesn't go according to plan. Will either be willing to make the biggest sacrifice of their lives to be together, or will they lose their chance at happy ever after because neither are willing to compromise?
Having absolutely loved the first book of this series, I couldn't wait to read more about the Harper family and see each of the siblings get their own happy ever after, and I've got to say that this second book of the series was just as good as the first. Because not only was it very engaging due to the main characters back stories and the tough obstacles they face to be together, but because the secondary characters bring someone extra special to this story. And really, the one secondary character that stood out for me was Helen who was amusing and brilliant in her attempts to get the heroine to stay. Will Olivia take a chance on Jarrah? Will she be willing to give up everything for him or will Jarrah give up everything for her?
Both the main characters were compelling and I loved their back stories and their growing relationship, as Olivia is finally able to live her life the way she wants to live it now that her sister is healthy and cancer-free and found the man she loves. Furthermore, the heroine has worked hard for everything she's achieved, and I liked that she didn't make decisions based on her strong feelings for Jarrah without thinking about all that she would be giving up. I also liked how resilient and courageous she was in her past in dealing with her sister's cancer and being there for her every step of the way through the tough times. It wasn't easy for her, but the end result was worth it all. While the hero, he's confident, hard-working, will do anything for those he loves and I loved that he didn't make things hard for the heroine when it came crunch time in their relationship. I also liked how determined the hero was to make her holiday fun and exciting and give her enough memories for the future.
Overall, this author has delivered a wonderful read in this book where the chemistry was strong between this couple; the romance was delightful and showed how right these two are for each other; and the ending had me loving the sacrifice one of the main characters was willing to make to be with the one they loved. However, it was epilogue that wrapped this story up perfectly, because of the interaction between Olivia and Helen and then the surprise the hero has for the heroine that had me glad these two overcame the obstacles they faced to be together. I would recommend A Choice of Fate by Jezz De Silva, if you enjoy the opposites attract trope, holiday romances or books by authors Alisha Rai, Tessa Dare, Lucy Parker and Ruthie Knox.
This was my first de Silva, though there is a prior book in the series. I enjoyed it for the most part, but found some of it to be confusing. There were also a couple of instances of the heroine being aware of her breasts in a way that read very "guy writing a woman" to me (I've had breasts for 35 years and never once worried they'd bounce out of a bra, for instance).
What I liked: the Outback setting was well-rendered and new to me. I like being able to "visit" new places when I read, so I enjoyed that quite a bit. The hero and heroine had definite chemistry and realistic obstacles to overcome. The large and chaotic family came across as relatable.
What was confusing: beyond even the hero's huge family, there is a cast of THOUSANDS. While I understand the narrative need for this to some extent when you're planning a series, it became overwhelming after a while just trying to keep everyone straight. There was also a bit of what came across as magical realism in the form of a vision and a magical tree that seemed out of place in the rest of the book.
So, overall, a three-star read. I liked it, but didn't love it.
I was provided a free Advance Reader's Copy in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in Jezz de Silva's Outback Hearts series, and it was the perfect follow up to the series premiere (Against All Odds). I love, love, love the characters in this series, particularly the Harper siblings, and was so happy to see that Olivia and Jarrah got their chance at a Happily Ever After.
A Choice of Fate is full of heart and family and everything I love to read in a romance. That it is set in the magical Aussie outback just elevates the book and its appeal. And Jezz's writing... well, that's just icing on the cake. Witty and so authentic that I speak to myself with an Aussie accent for weeks after I finish the books!
Bottom line is you will fall in love with the Outback from the descriptions in this book just as much as Olivia and Jarrah.
P.S. I received an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, but have pre-ordered it because I have to own it. These books are that good.
A Choice of Fate by Jezz de Silva is the story of Doctor Olivia Williams and Jarrah Harper. Olivia has made sure her sister has what she needs and placed herself in second place after the death of their parents. But her sister is now getting married to a man in Australia and Olivia has found a wonderful job to start her career. Olivia has taken a month off before starting that job to go to Australia and help her sister with her wedding. Jarrah has worked to hard to get ahead in life and get the expensive things to fill his life with. But with Olivia she doesn't seem to be all that taken with all that he has. Olivia and Jarrah are both at a point in their life where things are about to change and them adding to that change by having a relationship might be more than they both can handle. But their feelings are growing and maybe life is worth changing from what you thought you wanted to something that you really want. Enjoyed their story.
Focal point is a wedding in Australia between Abi and Ryder. Arriving together after many Skype sessions are Doctor Olivia Williams and Lawyer Jarrah Harper. Getting to Wingarra is made magical with the appearance of the Wishing Tree which invokes voodoo magic. Romance is a road that has its speed bumps for Olivia and Jarrah. A month vacation fling is all that is possible. This is a continuation of earlier book by Silva in this Outback Hearts series. Choice of Fate can be read as a stand-alone but from the catch-up hints of the previous book it must be good. "A copy of this book was provided by Entangled with no requirements for a review. Comments here are my honest opinion.
This is my first time in reading this author with the story picking my attention a bit. For some reason a doctor and lawyer intrigued me this time and at a fabulous place Down Under. Op to get away with a promising romance -yeah. They cross paths and the fun begins with it also being a time when her sister will be getting married. What Jarrah hides beneath slowly comes out under Olivia's touch as a relationship builds. You sink further in as they grow with their story with us getting caught up in it. I did enjoy the writing style and the ride this author gives as he shows how two can grow.
Very enjoyable book! The writing was excellent with nice vivid detail that made the Australian Outback come to life for me. Olivia and Jarrah are awesome characters and the author gave me enough detail to feel like I really knew them. I really enjoyed how they both changed how they saw the world and what they deemed as important as their relationship grew. Overall a very good read and one I would definitely recommend to everyone.
I loved this book. It felt like putting on a comfy jumper - all the characters I know and love. Like the other books I loved the way the author describes the Australian landscape. I feel like Olivia and Jarrah were always destined to be together - they just took a while to get there! I am not sure whether it will be the last in the series but I enjoyed this and felt like my questions had been answered. I will definitely look out for other books by Jezz.
4.5 Stars for the descriptions alone, they are just magical! I enjoyed this trip into the Australian outback. The setting is authentic and the large and diverse Harper family, as well as the townspeople of Baroona are just off-the-page realistic. The author is Australian and writes with a believable voice that is easy to understand. This is my first time reading her work but it won't be my last.
Thanks to the publisher and netgalley for allowing me to read this story.
This was a fun book. Olivia takes off for a month long holiday in Australia to watch her sister get married. The sparks fly instantly between her Jarrah. Watching their journey to the Outback and back again kept me hooked.
They had some large obstacles to overcome to get their happily ever after. I cried a few times reading this. Highly recommend it!
On one hand, de Silva delivers on what you expect in a contemporary, sexy romance: strong male / female protagonists, lots of chemistry and well-crafted banter. On the other hand, the author also takes the reader on a journey to the Outback, using the environment to both support and encourage the romance. This is a new-to-me author, and I look forward to the next installment of the series.
This is the third book I’ve read from this author, and by far my favourite, I loved the characters, and hoping that the author has finished writing the next 🙂.
A Choice of Fate by Jezz de Silva was an amazing sequel to the first book in the Outback Hearts series A Choice of Fate follows on directly from Against All Odds and revolves around Abigail’s sister, Olivia and Ryder’s brother, Jarrah.
Jezz de Silva has a lovely writing style that is completely addictive and will keep you turning the pages. His world building is extremely realistic; he has the ability to place the reader firmly in the middle of the Australian outback without relying on caricatures or stereotypes. Jezz touched on the matter of racism in the community, but did so without having to rely on trite politically correct arguments and instead it was portrayed as it would naturally occur and it was interesting to see it play out.
In this book, we get to be a part of Abigail and Ryder’s wedding, and I would like to add that you may need tissues. It was truly beautiful, especially after reading about what they had to go through in book one, to see this happy ending was a truly emotional event. Speaking of emotional segments, you want to keep the tissues for the ending. It is a happy one, but I shed a few tears. Ok, I’ll admit to being a bit of a teary wuss, but I found it truly heart-warming.
A Choice of Fate can be read as a standalone novel, but I’d seriously recommend you read book one first. I think without reading book one first, the second book may be a bit confusing in parts, and most certainly you would miss the significance of many conversations and events. The family is quite large, and it helps to get to know everyone, but more importantly, to know the details of what Abigail and Ryder went through to truly appreciate book two. It is a much more in-depth and enjoyable experience to have followed this family’s ups and downs from book one.
I’d highly recommend the Outback Hearts series. Jezz de Silva has quickly become one of my ‘must read’ authors. 5 stars all the way!

Jamie's resilience and insistence that Eve know the truth about her husband Mark's death pushed him to not only heal as well as possible so he could find her but to also defy military protocol. A career soldier, his decision to tell her everything would no doubt put his career in jeopardy but he knew it was a risk worth taking.
If the story jumped in after Mark's death, I would have questioned Jamie's reasoning and sanity. But the story opens with these two men in a war zone. The author gives an amazing glimpse into the friendship between them, even though Mark was Jamie's superior, and shows why Jamie was wholly committed to bringing Eve closure.
Eve was shielded from the truth of Mark's military work because he chose to protect her from it. It didn't mean she was ignorant though. She knew what he was doing and where he was going was dangerous; she just didn't know the extent of the work he did. But Eve didn't want to bury her husband under pretense. She wanted the truth. All she got on her quest was deflection, text book answers because of the nature of Mark's work. And yet she pushed on, refusing to give in and give up because she deserved more than what she was being given. All she wanted was full closure because, damn it, she deserved it and nothing less and Jamie gave her that.
I loved that Eve was pregnant throughout this story, although I can only imagine how daunting it must have felt to know that she would raise the baby with it ever knowing its father. She could share stories, show pictures, but there would always be a void where Mark should have been in the baby's life.
It would have been an easier if the author decided to make Eve a conniving bitch, sleep with Jamie, then claim the baby was his. The author didn't and instead used the pages of this book to show how the relationship between Jamie and Eve progressed from acquaintances to friends to lovers. They grieved together the loss of the man who connected them then rejoiced in the fact that their love wasn't hinged on guilt, obligation or a desire to make sure the baby was provided for.
One thing that really stood out in this story was Mark's constant presence. Even though he was gone, Jamie and Eve never forgot about him. He was there when they reminisced, when they talked about the future, when they talked about the house. Everything was a reminder of the man they'd lost. And I loved that the author didn't cast him aside to make more page space for Jamie and Eve's story.
Indestructible is the best way to describe Jamie, and he earned that title after the hell he went through overseas and at home as he tried to reach Eve, but it is such a perfect description for Eve as well. Neither are indestructible in the physical sense but they both possessed incredibly strong spirits that got them through the hardest time of their lives and kept them moving forward into something completely unexpected. Reading Jamie and Eve's story was an experience. Emotions, actions, words. Everything was live and in color, so to speak, and it was amazing to be so deeply drawn into a story that I felt like I was a part of it, like the characters weren't just people made up to entertain me but people I actually knew.
