Returning home for the first time in ten years, Sequoia Schmidt sets out to complete a 28 day solo cycle of New Zealand. This will be her first time home since the death of her father and brother in a tragic climbing accident. Changing Gears describes Sequoia's experiences with grief, loss and recovery, interwoven with adventures on the roads of New Zealand as she returns home to reconnect with Aotearoa and herself.
i picked up this book after listening to sequoia schmidt on the podcast strangers: the schmidts part 1 & 2. the account of riding 'across' new zealand is mostly about her emotional adventure, dealing with the loss of her father and brother, and overcoming fears found in challenges. being a minimalist solo bike tour-er myself, that aspect was a lot of fun--even though it was painful to hear the gear advice she got at the start of her trip.
