Book 3 by Tom Combs, Wrongful Death, had an awesome storyline, Well developed characters, suspense that kept me turning the pages, strong emotions and more. This book may be read as a stand-alone but I would recommend reading the books in order to get a better understanding.
Emergency room physician Drake Cody delivers a baby of a drug overdosed mother who later dies. He suddenly finds himself embroiled in a baseless malpractice suit, a plot to murder his hospital’s patients, a police crackdown on an exploding epidemic of opioid overdose deaths, an attempt to destroy his career, and the attempted murder of a family member.
The author deftly weaves a plot of escalating tension that keeps us readers on the edge of our chairs. We find ourselves caring more and more about the characters. We want to shake them when we perceive a clue that they cannot see. We feel the pain of the good guys when their lives are falling apart. The bad guys are very evil, but even with them, the author gives us enough background that we understand how they got the way they are.
One of the real pleasures of this story is the insider view it gives of the healthcare system. We see the emotional toll on healthcare providers as they do their best for their patients. We see inherent conflict between them and the hospital administrators who have to balance off what’s best for the patients with what’s best for the hospital’s survival. Since the author was an emergency room physician himself, this picture of the hospital from that perspective is authentic. If I had any disappointment with this story it was that some of subplots weren’t brought to a resolution. For example, we become very sympathetic to a struggling and lonely homicide detective who seems to make a connection with a social worker. But we never learn whether they become an item. Oh well, this is only Book 3 in the escapades of Dr. Cody. Maybe this will carry over to Book 4 or 5.
In sum, I strongly recommend this book for just about anyone. The only people who likely to be unhappy with it are the malpractice lawyers. They take it on the chin.
Back to catching up on old series I started and never got around too. This one is by a local author near me here in Minnesota so I have been combing through his books (joke). His name is Tom Combs.
Wrongful Deaths is book 3 of his Drake Cody series about an ER doctor who has financial and family issues along with drama in his medical practice.
I like Combs writing style and the story is easy to follow. The characters are repetitive and events happen quickly. The main characters are likeable and credible.
I had issues getting into this book for some reason. The start wasn’t slow but the middle caused me to lose focus. I think the concept of the book (deals with OD’s) was a little over done and that’s why I got bored of it.
I will push through and read book 4. I would recommend the series too, just wouldn’t say this was my favorite so far in the series.
Very interesting way of writing, telling us who the culprit is almost from the beginning, and then waiting for the main characters to figure it out. The one thing I didn't like was the references to the death of Clara's lover (which provided her motive...), but never a full explanation of it. I'm guessing it took place in one of the previous books - that's what I get for reading #3 first! I did like the Drake Cody character, as well as his wife. Both flawed, who have overcome difficult childhoods and found themselves in a loving relationship. I also like to read books set in familiar settings...still trying to figure out which lake their new home might be located on! ;-)

I love the action of the emergency room along with the twisting plot. Characters jump out at you and you ache for some of them, especially Drake Cody and his family. They can't get a break. If you like action, thrillers, this is your book. It is different than many thrillers, and that is a very good thing! The emergency room adds a great twist to the usual thriller theme. But you really do need to read books 1 and 2. Not because the novels have to be followed in order, but trust me, you want to!
I read 2 Drake Cody books. This is my third. Love the backdrop of the ER and all the ‘excitement’ there. Some interesting and kooky characters add to the overall enjoyment of the book. I appreciate that the main characters aren’t perfect but still try to do the right thing. I will say that this book didn’t grab me at first. It seemed to drag a little. But halfway through I was hooked and then got into my reading -past -midnight -mode. I’m glad I stuck with it! Well done!
Dang! I have read all 3 Drake Cody Suspense Thriller books. Read them all in a matter of days. I just loved all of them! Excellent medical mystery thriller stories. Please continue writing more about these awesome people I have grown to love and route for. Readers, do read the stories in order. They are not cliffhangers, but makes them all tie in together. I will be eagerly awaiting on the next book!
Another great read by this author. The plot kept me hooked throughout the book, and I liked the ethics of the "good" characters. I especially liked the professionalism toward Nurses and the team concept demonstrated between both professions in the book. The fact that a physician wrote it is impressive because the concept was so clearly demonstrated in the book and is not always so clear in reallife. Thank you Dr. Combs (from an old nurse).
After finishing WRONGFUL DEATHS, I'm salivating for Tom Combs to churn out #4 in the Drake Cody series! Once again, he is faced with a nearly-impossible story problem, some characters so sleazy or threatening that they 'need slappin' or killin'' and other characters you would hug if you met them face-to-face because, YES, they become THAT REAL!
I recently discovered this series of medical mysteries / thrillers and am loving it. You do start to wonder how one doctor can run into so much trouble, but if you can suspend that disbelief, it's a great series. This book was just as good as the first two. Now will be stalking Tom Combs' website to find out when the next book comes out!
The third in the series featuring Dr Drake Cody....loved it!
I love a good medical thriller, and this was one of the best I’ve read. This is the third featuring Dr Drake Cody, riveting from start to finish, and I suggest they be read in order. Highly recommended reading.
Great read and interesting novel. Internet search engine reveals Angel of Mercy concept of not uncommon. Artificial Intelligence (A.I) will undoubtedly assist physicians with diagnosis and treatment.
Just a fabulous read!!! The character development is amazing, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to be immersed in a wonderful, suspenseful and entertaining story!
Love this book and this author. Awesome book and I love all the accurate medical portrayals. Absolutely a must read. Could have read in one sitting if I didn't have to work.
A great read! I just finished the last of Tom Combs' series on Dr. Drake. The great p!ot twists made it hard to put down! I also enjoyed all the medical jargon as I am a retired trauma nurse!
Excellent! This was my favorite of the Drake Cody series. I love the Minnesota references, so that makes it so easy to read. I cannot wait for the next book in the series!
Totally immersive in twisted characters who are beyond redemption. Contrasted by morally sound heroes with conflicting pasts. Amazing read. Could put book down until last page.
I abandoned this book after reading 25% of it. I found all of the characters severely damaged or flawed, so it was difficult to relate to or cheer for any of them.
