"Moniker: Identity Lost And Found" explores hobo art and the underground moniker writing tradition. It features 148 full-color pages of never-before-seen archival documents, photographs, and artwork, offering a glimpse of many contemporary artists in their own voices.
Initially presented by Massilon Museum in 2018, they issued the first edition of hardcover books as the "Moniker: Identity" exhibit's catalog. It sold out immediately upon release. The second edition is in softcover format is released in conjunction and cooperation with the Black Butte Center For Railroad Culture and their exhibit "End Of The Line," which opened on June 9th, 2022.
While researching the novel I'm working on, which concerns modern-day freight hoppers, I discovered Massillon Museum's then-upcoming "Moniker" exhibit and traveled to Ohio to check it out on its opening weekend. This catalog is an essential part of enjoying that exhibit. It features nearly everything on display at the museum while also including valuable insights from well-known moniker artists like buZ blurr ("Colossus of Roads"). This is a really amazing collection of art and writing about a culture in America that's older than the country itself yet remains overlooked in both history and art.
