Five years ago the man she loved died in her arms...Or did he?

The Shadow Destroyer Series, Book 1.

Jordan McAdam leads an unusual double life. Police officer by day, vigilante by night. But Jordan isn't interested in the average criminal. She stalks Shadow Demons, creatures who prey on the innocent, creatures whom she suspects are responsible for a string of bizarre sacrificial murders. Creatures who killed her partner and lover. Gage Campbell has spent the last few years on an elite team of Shadow Destroyers, hunting down the demons who changed his life and his DNA. Then an assignment leads him straight back to the woman he hasn't been able to stop thinking about for five long years. The woman he had no choice but to leave behind. Is the man before her a mimic demon bent on tormenting her, or is it Gage returned from the dead? All Jordan knows is that the raging desire between them is real. Standing between them are years of secrets and hurt, and a love that just might have the power to bring them together. If the murder case they're working on doesn't separate them permanently. This title was previously published but has been revised and expanded for Samhain Publishing. Warning, this title contains the following: adult language and graphic violence of the sword-wielding, demon-slaying kind. Also contains hot, explicit sex between reunited lovers, passionate up-against-the-wall foreplay and the use of handcuffs for the heroines own good and pleasure.

A born and raised Maritimer, Sydney Somers fell in love with writing when she finished her first story, Jenny and the Glowing Green Mittens. After attempting her first book in high school, she set writing aside to focus on school. While getting her degrees in psychology and education, Sydney tried her hand at journalism between part time jobs before finally returning to her love of writing.

Twenty-five novels and novellas later, Sydney is thrilled to spend her days slaying demons, running with shape-shifter packs and making the people in her head fall wildly in love. When she’s not writing or curled up with a good book, Sydney can be found chasing after her herd of kids, talking her way into a gourmet meal, exterminating rogue dust bunnies or joking about the pending zombie apocalypse. She loves hearing from readers and invites them to contact her anytime.

First off, the prologue or foreword about the history of the demons was a little bit misleading and unexpected — it didn't mesh with the cover, and it was probably unnecessary. It could have been told by the Brady character, maybe in a flashback of him teaching Jordan, the heroine — I don't know. It just seemed out of place the way it was done, a small bit of timeless history from some mythic time embedded in a contemporary paranormal story.

The rest of the story was mostly fine, though. The characters were likable, and the action was done pretty well. It wasn't as engaging as I would have liked — I kept taking long breaks from reading the book, days and days at a time, before coming back to it, and I kept wanting to start other books before finishing this one. Still, it's a good story — it just needs a little work, I think. I would have given this another star if it weren't for the fact that there were a lot of loose ends.

I know that Braxton and Quinn are sequel bait, so I know that whatever they had between them wouldn't be resolved in this book but in the next, but I still felt they needed to make an appearance toward the end of this book. The cop named Lance particularly needed to be in the end somehow — that was a very, very big loose end for me. He had just discovered the existence of demons and narrowly escaped death by them himself, but after Gage saved him and Jordan, you don't see or hear a single thing from him. I would have liked a scene addressing that because his quipping that he would have preferred that Jordan was crazy was just not enough for me. Existence of the paranormal should have been a world-shattering epiphany for him, as it was to Jordan and Gage, I'm sure. Given that Jordan's moonlighting was such a big issue, her compartmentalizing her worldly cop life from her otherworldly demon-slaying life, and given that it was emphasized so much that mere mortals had no clue that these demons existed, it just would have been nice to see. I had imagined an entire cover-up scene where Lance gives Jordan a grudging respect and maybe a pledge of silence and the lending of his eyes and ears on the mortal and legal side of things while she went off to do some major professional demon slaying with Gage, so I was really disappointed when I didn't get it. I mean, I know the demons never leave enough evidence for regular forensics, but come on, the law has extensive records on missing persons reports and murder scenes, right? Surely, mere mortals can be of SOME help in this series.

Despite all that, the story was OK. The foreshadowing of Miranda's true identity probably could have been done a little differently — I don't know if there was enough of a tell there without it being too obvious, and I don't really want to go back and reread all the scenes with her to see how it might have been done better. Really, there wasn't much to make this a true mystery; it felt more like they were stumbling onto the right track rather than sleuthing. Good thing they're demon slayers and not detectives.

3.5 Very decent PNR/UF that starts a new series. The series is getting good reviews, so I'll definitely put the next couple on my TBR list. There was a little too much repeated internal monologuing, and there were a few irritating instances of stopping to kiss passionately at inappropriate times, but the suspense plot was quite good with some unexpected twists, and Ms. Somers writes a decent fight scene.

This is the first book of a series by Sydney Somers.
A cop by day, Jordan spends her night hunting the monsters that killed her partner and nearly took her life. For the last five years, she's been learning the monster hunting game and mourning the loss of the man who was more than her partner - he was the love of her life.
Then, one night, in a dark alley while she was fighting demons who'd been attacking an innocent, there was Gage, big as life ... and very much still breathing, and everything she'd believed changed.
Unbreakable is a love story wrapped up in a monster hunt and it's a heart-stopping roller coaster ride that will keep you on the edge of your seat from the first page to the last one.
There's lots of action, lots of monsters, a sexy, smart and savvy group of demon hunters and romance that's steamy enough to satisfy even the lust demons who populate the story.
Unbreakable is a great story and a great start to the Shadow Destroyers series.

What a captivating tale! Shadow Demons and Destroyer Genes gives you an idea what this book is about. Loved the detail given not to mention the steam factor. I loved it!

This was the first full book I read on my iPod Touch, with the Kindle book application. At the time I got the book, it was free (it's not at present, sorry), so I thought I'd give it a try.

I did enjoy the book, but there were some things I think the author could have written better. When the two main characters, Jordan and Gage get back together, they couldn't keep themselves off of each other. While that could have been endearing, two trained kick-ass assassians just wouldn't put the other in more danger just so they can have sex whenever they were together. Especially when strong feelings attract the demons they hunt. It actually got in the way of the story at times. Fortunately, the story eventually corrected that and those sex scenes made a lot more sense.

As for the rest of the story, I, in fact, felt that the "good guys" or shadow dystroyers were well developed characters. I enjoyed their interactions a lot. Therefore, I felt that this book was a good set up for the next books in the series. Will I read the rest of the series? I'm undecided at the moment, but I feel that it did earn 3 stars.

First lines: “Jordan, wait.”
Jordan McAdam didn’t so much as glance over her shoulder, let alone stop. She damn well would have taken the rear door out of the precinct if she’d known Officer Gage Campbell was going to be hot on her heels. She thought he was tied up with their captain. In fact, she’d been counting on it.

"Unbreakable" is a new-to-me series by a new-to-me author that really impressed me with both its detailed storyline and interesting characters with whom I quickly connected. Five years ago, Jordan thought Gage died in her arms after an attack by a strange entity that turned out to be a shadow demon. When Gage walks back into her life after a chance encounter on the streets, they have a chance to reunite their old passion.

I'm keyed to read the second part of this series and see what happens with Quinn and Braxton. And I have a sneaky suspicion that Brady is really not dead. We shall see. Very recommended for urban fantasy/paranormal romance fans.

I've tried to re-read this book a couple of time, but I always fail. Reason enough for me to lower to 2 stars.
A kick ass heroine is up my alley, but not when her brain is turned off by a hunk. Above all when the said hunk had lied to her. Moreover, I don't like this kind of "second chance stories".

If he lies to you he needs to grovel quite a lot. If he let you believe he's been dead, he needs to do much, much more. Above all, I despise being told that love trumps all, including life. So if your love dies, you spend the rest of your life as zombie. Nope, this isn't love, but obsession to me. Unhealthy, not romantic.

We are not walking bags of hormones (my now clichéd phrase), and I hate when women are written off as such. And if you lust after a guy, notwithstanding what he does, that's the way you are written off.

This was much better than I was expecting - probably not a full 5 stars (more like 4.5) but I thought I would round up in light of all of the low ratings. Great characters, world and an interesting plot full of twists and turns. They story was short as some have noted (a long novella or short novel) but there are 3 more in the series for me to get my fix from!
For the Buffy fans out there - I couldn't help but be reminded of Riley Finn and the Initiative a little. Although that's not to say this is derivative of the Buffy legacy. Overall good story with lots of characters & couples to read more about in the next books.

I did not like this book at all. As a matter of fact, I couldn't even finish it - and that's saying a lot. What was disturbing to me was that the story seemed very juvenile, it was peppered with steamy, explicit sex scenes that seemed totally unnecessary. I'm by no means a prude, I likes me some good erotica, but I just found myself cringing with this one. If the story had been more compelling, I could have handled the heat, but it just made me feel icky. I don't think I've ever said that about a book.

The actual plot of this book was pretty good it kept me wanting to know what was going on to the end. My only critisism was the sex scenes started to get a bit repetitive, so I ended up skipping over most of them because I wanted to find out what was going on with the main storyline. I enjoyed her characters & dialogue, she wrote them very well and I will definitely check out her other books.

This new series to me was a freebie from Amazon. I read it and had to buy all the others. Jordan is a female cop I can really admire. For her to lose her lover must have been devastating. This may feel kind of like Rachel Caine's Weather Wardens in some sense. If you liked that book, I think you would like this one.

3.5 I think. Read this back a few years ago. I like the world just thought the hero was a jerk sometimes. He had a hard time dealing with the fact that his "death" and intentions to keep the heroine safe didn't quite pan out the way he expected them to.

Got half way thru and gave up reading. A poorly knock off version of vampire turned vampire hunters. Been there read that. It was a struggle reading the first half. Was hoping it would pick up and get interesting and failed.

I should have read the reviews before choosing this book. The writing and story are great, but the sex talk gets in the way.
