"I never thought I would be in this situation, fighting for survival in a world turned upside-down. But here I am, doing everything I can to keep my daughters safe in this apocalyptic dawn. It's hard to believe that just a few weeks ago, our biggest worries were school, soccer practice, and what to make for dinner. Now, we're living in constant fear. The pack of abandoned dogs we've taken in helps, but it's a dangerous world out there. We've had to maintain a charade to keep looters at bay, by making our home, and the others on our street look like still occupied by our old neighbors. I live in fear every second of the day that someone will catch on. So far the ruse has worked, but for how long?"

This quick book follows a global (maybe) catastrophe with the story of a few survivors along the Pacific coast. It would make a great sequel but I felt so much was missing. Was the tsunami or the pandemic the first life-changing event for America? Was it global? How long ago was the pandemic? Why did the entire neighborhood leave but one family stay? So many questions!

Back to our actual story - the characters were strong and driven. I enjoyed the animals interwoven into the family's narrative. In one sense, the situation seemed very realistic but also disjointed. Instead of picking one direction like survival or government control, it's all over the place.

I would be interested to see the next steps in this family's journey so I will read the next book. This is my first book by this author.

I'm feeling a little ambivalent about this book.
It has a very high rating, close to 4.5 Stars and I love a good teotwawki book so with that and the high rating I bought it.
Then I noticed the reviews...or more precisely I noticed that nearly all of the 5 Star reviews have a similar format.
Sock puppets?
I'm not sure but I thought I would read it anyway.

So the book.

There is good and bad.

The good.

It really is an interesting idea.
I quite like the characters.
and there are dogs...I love dogs.

The bad

There is absolutely no back story. We have a pandemic that's not explained and a tsunami that's not explained. We just find ourselves in a suburb, the main character's husband has just been shot and that's it.
The writing is clunky, in parts it almost reads like a list of things that happen without addressing the most important question, why?

And here's the thing.

Despite my sock puppet suspicions and the fact that it doesn't deserve a rating higher than books by Rhiannon Frater or Sarah Lyons Flemming. Despite the clunky writing.

There is enough good in there that I'm going to give book two a chance.

It was entertaining, but lacked depth. The interactions between the characters felt weirdly disjointed and sporadic. I liked the premise of a mom trying to keep her family safe, but boy was she ever lucky - she knew how to clean guns, set explosives, use a car battery to charge tools, had a huge supply of food that never seemed to run out, was amazingly resilient despite a knife injury, and so on. I feel very inadequate right now...

Not good

Poor language skills and lacking editing. Flat characters and a thin storyline. Unnecessary repetitions are irritating. And for heavens sake, is it really necessary to describe the flooring, walls and decor of every single room in the mansion? I don't think I will spend more time with these books...

Sloane Delaney and her daughters, Wren and Mae, find themselves almost totally alone in their neighborhood after a devastating tsunami wreaks havoc along the Oregon coast. Sloane is a strong woman and sets out to ensure that her daughters have what it takes to survive in the wake of this disaster. A crazy neighbor, no power or fresh water, wanders, and the government are among the many dangers thrown at them.

Shaw’s first book in the Dawn of Deception series, Unbound is a riveting novel set in a post-apocalyptic world. The ingenuity and determination of Sloane make for a fascinating read. The pace of the story varies and keeps your reading straight to the end.

Having a strong female protagonist in a post-apocalyptic setting is refreshing. Motherly love is overwhelming. Sloane will do whatever it takes to keep her children safe. Will she ever learn to trust again? We shall see in book two!

I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars.

Don't waste your time

A mother with two girls worrying about maintaining three neighbors homes with the hopes they would be coming back from running away during an apocalypse. They also have a psycho neighbor that mistreats his daughter. This is so stupid that it is laughable. Try taking care of family first . I couldn't get past page 50 this was so ludicrous.

Did I read the same book?

Good reviews. I don't get it. If you want to read a story of a nutcase mother who needlessly endangers her children time after time, then this is it.

Great apocalyptic story

I like this author's style. She drew you into the story right from the beginning with the fear Sloan and her girls are going through. The situation the characters are experiencing is plausible and the actions the characters take to protect themselves is well thought out. There are no dumb actions taken by the characters to move the plot along. I like strong, smart thinking women. The characters are well developed and had depth.

There are many twists and turns in this storyline making the story interesting. I will definitely be reading the next book in this story.

Along with the novel, I purchased the audiobook. The narrator did a superb job with differentiation of the characters' voices, along with believable male and female ones.

I highly recommend this book.

I nearly stopped reading this several times, but with such a high score, I thought, “It must get better”.

Looking at all the high scores I can only believe that they have been written by friends and family because there is no way this book is a 4 star read! When this book was offered, I looked at the fabulous score and bought it. I liked the premise of the book, dystopian futures often intrigue me, but this book has many problems.

There is a whole lot of telling you, instead of showing you, and even so, the author fails to explain the backstory at all.

The book starts and we are in a suburb somewhere, the main character Sloane’s husband Brad has just been shot and that's it. Oh and there is been a pandemic where Husband no.1 Finn died then there was a tidal wave flooding everyone’s home.

The world as we know it has ended. How? Why? When? We are just told this without explanation, even though it is the whole reason for the story to begin.

There’s not much depth or substance, characters are underdeveloped or cliched (violent partner Brad and unbalanced abusive father Doug) and the story development is lacking.

It is firmly pushing being prepared for collapse of society, being armed and keeping out of government hands because you can’t trust them. I felt a strong sense of paranoia here when our main character puts ammunition and weapons waaay ahead of food as a priority.

Perhaps what I dislike most is the writing or clunky use of language. This happens, this happens, that happens. Its repetitive. Poor dialogue. The author does not have a poetic or atmospheric turn of phrase and I failed to care much or believe the events.

The ending was annoying and I will not be continuing with this series.

I really liked the dogs. Dogs are good. 2 stars for the dogs.

A tidal wave overtook the small town where Sloane lived with her two daughters. Her first husband had died and she had remarried--but the second husband was not a nice guy at all!! With her house filled with water Sloane had to decide what to do. Her neighbors were leaving--she decided to stay.

She was told by her departing neighbors to take what ever she could find in their homes--then suddenly she was alone in her neighborhood. Well there was one family, a man with a young daughter. He was absolutely out of his mind and Sloane worried about the little girl.

Meanwhile Sloane set about making it look like there were still people living in the other houses. It was hard work but she with the help of her daughters managed it. Then the stray dogs started coming. A blessing in disguise. With some love, patience and food they became the guardians of all the houses! Meanwhile when that man's daughter showed up at Sloane's door--she took her in. From then on she was a third daughter!!

Then some government men came and told Sloane that she had to move to the encampment set up for the refugees. Sloane knew they had to leave--and fast--But not fast enough. What the men did was horrendous. Sloane and the girls took to the woods with what they could carry.

They found an old house deep in the woods that has been abandoned years ago--It was supposedly haunted--but what choice did they have?

A cat brought them a handwritten message--there was someone else living on the grounds. It took a while to trust him--but he saved the 2 youngest girls lives--he was a doctor! Then he came to their door with one of the dogs--he had followed their scent.

I really want to know what happens next!!!!!!

I received the book from the author for my enjoyment and possible review.

I received this book from Book Funnel and found that most books in a series are stand alone books with an ending that can carry on into another book but is a story in itself but this one does not. IT JUST ABRUPTLY STOPS.- very unkind to the readers and puts you off reading the next one in case it does the same.
It is a realistic senario which takes place after a pandemic and apocalytic event. Sloane a Mother with two girls avoids the FEMA agents who are gathering survivors to take them to a camp, her abusive husband is killed and after trying to hide out in their home have to flee along with another young girl whom they take in. Sloane can shoot, set traps destroy houses and a bit like a trained agent. They escape from the agents and set up camp in a haunted house, where another survivor finds them and tries to assist them but Sloane cannot trust anybody. Two of the girls are very ill and may not survive without the other survivor, who is a Doctor. Sloane allows him to help to ensure the girls survive but will they join forces or will they move on away from the Doctor and reject his offers of assistance. You have to read the next book to find out hence why the book only has four starts.

Side story of Apocalyptic series that stands alone WELL

I am an admirer of the Graham's Resolution series and when this book popped up on my Facebook wall at a very low price I grabbed it.

The book has a link to some of the characters in the Resolution series in fact Sloane and her daughters and Nicole feature in the housing estate. So it was superb to pick up their horrific story as America disintegrates and how Sloane fights for the 3 young girls and herself. An interesting addition us what happens to pets or domesticated animals when the world as we know it disintegrates.

I enjoyed this book and will look forward to reading the next instalment when it is published.

Thank you Linda.

This book deserves it 5 stars. It has a story line that you can get lost in and except the problems of today. It is filled with blood, gore and excessive killing. Yet it is filled with suspense as a young women is left alone after first a pandemic then a massive flood destroying her home. She manages for awhile to keep her daughters busy and providing a life for them when no one else lives on the street. I don't like stories that end leaving you hanging so they can be continued in another book. They should have a clear ending but still leaving you with the desire to read more. The characters are so believable that you can put yourself in the story and suffer all the aches, pains and suspense.

Couldn’t put it down

Sloan, a single mom and her children struggle to survive after a virus and tsunami practically destroy their lives. They try to hold out in their neighborhood after all the neighbors, except a knife wielding mentally man have left. Bad guys under the guise of FEMA, try to kill them and they end up on the run.
After taking shelter in an old house, stranger offers to help them. However, Sloan must allow herself to trust him, even if just a little bit.
Lots of heart attack inducing moments as you read this book. Loved the addition of a creepy house and a ghost to make the story even more interesting and a bit different from other post apocalyptic books! Enjoy and be prepared to read long into the night!

Good tropes, but needs fine tuning

Overall an easy read that hits most all the expected post-apoc tropes. But there were a few moments that felt strange or unexplained. For example, I don't feel it was ever really adequately explained why Sloane felt the need to stay behind and take care of her neighbors' abandoned houses. It also feels like we're missing details about the pandemic, and what the military is really up to. And then there was this part in that middle of the book where an attack happens, but its unexplained and the next chapter goes essentially back to normal. It almost seemed like a chapter was accidentally inserted where it doesn't belong. Just a few things that took me out of the story.

No zombies...

No zombies, just a well written post apocalyptic story.
Shane & her daughters Wren & Mae live in Oregon where an epidemic of flu has destroyed everything & almost everybody. She is trying to keep them safe & protected from the flu & some unsavory characters that are wondering around.
As cautious & careful as she's been, ultimately the bad guys do find them. Shane must run..where she doesn't know. But somewhere to keep her children safe.
I like Shane the character. She's tough. Nothing is too hard for her & she will do what needs to be done.
I've really enjoyed this storyline & hope there's more to come...😉

Got better with time

A very slow start and much confusion. Needs editing work to increase clarity about what’s going on in the beginning and how long it’s been. Improvements regarding weather as it is never scorching on an Oregon beach. The main character was well developed but the girls all seemed the same. Excessive details on day to day grind and a huge information dump as they enter the old house. But the story begins to move and hold my attention. In the beginning I almost quit reading several times. About midway it picked up and I wanted to keep reading. It became a good story.

I may learn to hate this author, once I start reading her books I just can’t stop!

My youngest son married a girl from Portland and we visited Cannon Beach while there. That made this extra special. What wonderful good characters and deplorable bad characters. So many challenges. Scary just like life is.

The mother is amazing, the dogs wonderful, the girls facing so many real problems in the part of their lives where they are usually their only problem!

I’m hooked, I have to have the rest of this series.

Needs a little editing, but compared to many ebooks, I only spotted a few.

Highly recommended.

Ms Shaw never disappoints

As with all Ms Shaw's books, this one grabbed me from the first chapter. I nearly read it in one sitting. So glad I didn't read it when it first came out so I can go ahead and read Parts 2 and 3 immediately. I so enjoyed this book! Definitely not your typical post-apocalyptic, prepper survivalist story. Or at least those areas were not written about in detail. This story focused on one family and follows them through some terrible trials. I highly recommend this book.

Unbound is an unusual book in that the lead character is a woman who is struggling with surviving the apocalypse without the help of a husband or male friend. At the beginning there is so much backstory that I felt I had missed reading book One. The bad guys are in some way a part of a rouge militia or FEMA group. It's never clear. Unlike books written by so many in this genre there are no endless descriptions of guns and ammunition and how they work. The characters are believable and the story interesting. I do recommend it.

Sloane McKenna her daughters Wren and Mae are forced to become self sufficient in ways they were never dreaming of until the advent of a natural disaster took their earlier lives from them from one day to the next.

This first book in the series is one of courage, determination, self-reliance and the ability to adapt as needed to circumstances.

I found the read to go smoothly from beginning to it's abrupt end and would someday like to revisit the characters to see how they progressed further in the next books.

Great Read

This was a great opening book. A mother alone with three young girls dependent on her. This is a developing story, one based in quiet strength.
Sloane, the mother, continues to plan, to provide for, and to protect her 3 girls even as their world decays around them. The woman has grit, compassion, and the determination only a mother focused on protecting her own can have. Can't wait for the sequel!

A great read!

When I downloaded "Dawn of Deception" I thought it was just another end of the world piece like so many others out there but I was pleasantly surprised. As I got into it, it was a believable story with real characters and a good story line lacking the normal repeat murder and mayhem angle. There were some bad guys and situations, but without the gory sensationalism that many authors seem to think it takes to sell books. I highly recommend Dawn of Deception!

Apocalypse and a strong capable woman

Interesting story of a “double apocalypse”; first a pandemic then a tsunami. Story is set in Oregon. Sloan and her two daughters have survived, but there are terrors aplenty.
Story ends in a mild cliffhanger. A few editing errors and typos but don’t really detract from the story.
I will look for the next part of this story from A. R. Shaw.

A Different Post-Apocalyptic Tale

I've read a few of these P-A thrillers and most are the scare-you-to-death kind of read. This one has heart. This one has a hint of hope for normalcy and a belated, hidden need for relationships that we have had most of our lives. But it isn't without suspense, gunplay and pain. The touch of the animals who came into their lives is a vital part of the story. Gotta give it 5 stars- it's that good!

Not your typical survival story

Compelling character development, with a story line that is believable but also strains credulity at times. Part of what makes it entertaining is how the children adapt to the challenges that are beyond anything we have ever experienced. There are no over the top heroics to spoil the reality of the characters and as a result it is easy to become attached to them.

Two major problems in a few years has made Sloane an incredible prepper and caring mother.

Tiny bit of an issue with the neighbourhood - small enough that the family could go from house to house each day making it look as though all the homes were still occupied ... but it seemed that they lived on a through road because other people would pass on their way to other places.

Also, I can understand not trusting the strangers but shouldn't they trust FEMA, etc?
