As one of Young Life's pioneers, and one of its most respected elders, Charlie Scott shares a first-hand account of how a raw piece of land in North Carolina has become one of the mission's most treasured assets. When you read this story, remember not only that it comes from someone who has witnessed the formation and success of the camp, but who has been a vital part of the process.
I had no prior experience with Young Life camps, but I decided to bring a group of kids to Windy Gap for a new adventure. While there, I found this book and couldn't put it down! It offers an amazing and intimate perspective into the history of Young Life as an organization, presenting a biblical view on discipleship and recounting the incredible work the Lord has done through the camp property and the people volunteering, working, or donating to the camp.
One fascinating fact I learned was that Young Life purchased their own camp properties because the camps they were renting required their students to be racially segregated. The book is filled with other cool insights, such as the purpose of adult guests visiting, stories of the first female and Black camp speakers, answers to prayers, and specific accounts of teens whose lives were transformed.
Definitely a great read for leaders, parents, and anyone else involved with or interested in Young Life!
