The author of just four published novels, Breslin writes with a polish and finesse that few more experienced authors have. The attention to detail is incredible, as if each and every word is chosen with specific care. And the amount of historical detail she includes in her novels is always spectacular. I love a historical author that can teach me something about the time period.

I was so excited to finally read Colin's story. We got only a brief glimpse of him in Not by Sight, but I already knew he was a character with the potential for so much depth. And Breslin did not disappoint on this front. Lieutenant Mabry is such a complex and realistic character, you can't help but empathize with him. Literally from page one, I fell in love with him. Johanna Reyer, our female MC, is also an incredibly multiplex character, and I particularly related to her love of her sister and father and her desire to be reunited with them.

This story, set mainly in WW1 France, is full of intrigue, spies, suspense, and so much historical beauty. What a stellar combination! I could not put this down. Both plot and characters kept me engaged from the very beginning and I didn't want to let them go at the end. The complexity of this story is so mind-blowing. Hats off to the author! I particularly loved the historical and regional accuracy in the dialogue. From the accents and the French and Catalan language included, all the way down to the lovely British phrases. With the attention to detail in both dialogue and description, I felt like I was living the story along with the characters. I savored every word of this magnificent story.

The themes of faith, purpose, and love spread throughout this book just put everything over the top. I was so inspired by these characters and their journey.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed Breslin’s newest release, and Far Side of the Sea only cements this author’s place as one of my favorites. If you enjoy suspense, intrigue, history (particularly WW1-related history), spy stories, and sweet romance, definitely check this one out! I promise you won't regret it.

Rare WWI Historical Romance novel.

Far Side of the Sea focuses on Colin (secondary character in Not by Sight). Colin had a brief hint at romance while recovering from a war injury. After Jewel and Colin separate and lose contact with each other, he receives an urgent summons from Jewel to meet her in France.

Once Colin arrives in France to meet Jewel, the action and character duplicity begins. The pace of the novel was excellent and kept my interest throughout. I especially loved the twists in the novel, the ending and the Epilogue. The way the author highlighted the use of carrier pigeons as part of the war effort was fascinating. And the cover...lovely.

My gratitude to publisher Bethany House for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and the opinions expressed are my own.

What a treat to read another Kate Breslin book! I've really struggled this year to read any ebooks, but this one was a quick and absorbing read and kept me flipping pages despite that difficulty. While there isn't a lot about faith, it's clear they are steadied by their belief in God.

The twists and turns in the plot left me reeling. We met Colin in Not by Sight very briefly, but this book stands alone. I loved seeing more of Marcus in this one! Colin is an interesting young man from the very beginning, and I found it easy to care about him and Johanna from the very beginning. I guessed one plot facet at 53% and thought "there--I got it--that's the big reveal!" only to have it told to me at 62% and have plenty of book left to read. :) So the plotting was extremely well done and very absorbing.

I do love a good spy story and this one is one I'd easily recommend.

Thanks to Bethany House and NetGalley for a free copy. A favorable review was not required.

This is an amazing book. It really kept me riveted, very hard to put down to do anything!
1918 England we find Lieutenant Mabry receiving a letter via carrier pigeon from a woman who he thinks is another woman he met previously. Upon agreeing to meet her and help her he finds it's not the woman he thought it was but her sister that he agrees to help . Trust is not something that comes easily to Lieutenant Mabry and he is tense around the woman, Johanna. Johanna is a dovecote for French Army Intelligence. After finding her sister's diary she has an urgency to find her and believes her father is with her sister Jewel. Spies are absolutely everywhere and spies trust no one especially other spies. Can't let your guard down even for a minute as it could mean capture or even worse death. Venture forth as this intensely gripping story takes you through France and Spain. I could not predict this one, I just didn't see what was coming with the many twists and turns. I was fascinated to read how the carrier pigeons were used during WWI even flying and doing their duty after being injured, amazing! Encryption played a big part in this book too. Bravo, I was fascinated with your book, Kate.

I always get such a satisfied feeling after finishing a book by Kate Breslin. I am transported to another place for a few days (which I stretch out because her writing is exquisite) and although I am sad to leave, I am all the better for having visited.
This book is a combination of stunning historical detail--the pieces regarding carrier pigeon use during World War II are fascinating--action and adventure, mystery and romance. The author seamlessly weaves together all of those elements so that it doesn't seem like too much for the reader to handle, more that it enriches the tale and makes it more nuanced.
I loved the characters and how their faith and stumbles helped them grow and change throughout the story. Despite his disabilities and the challenges those pose to him in his everyday life, Colin forges through, trusting that God is good even when things seem dark.
The adventures the characters experience while traveling through Europe, seeking Johanna's sister and possibly their father, add so much intrigue to the story and had me breathlessly turning pages to see what would happen next.
Highly recommend this engaging and exciting historical romance novel!

Far Side of the Sea was a breathtaking journey back to WWI! The author definitely made me feel as if I was right in the middle of the action, cowering as the bombs dropped in Paris, journeying across the countryside in an effort to determine who was friend and who was foe, and juggling the intricacies of espionage.

I really liked the main characters. Colin Mabry was such a fabulous hero, overcoming his injury, yet still carrying uncertainty about how others viewed him. He also struggled with some “shell shock”, yet he was a truly heroic character, thinking of Johanna’s protection above his own. Johanna and Colin’s interest in each other grew naturally and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop.

Once I began this read, I was hooked, a wonderful historical story, set in western Europe, and deep into WWI, we are often in the line of fire. Even more we are surrounded by spies, and don’t know whom to trust, and warning don’t get too comfortable with a few of these individuals!
Deceit is abundant here, some for positive reasons and others, well!
I loved that we are reminded of this period of trial by true things that were happening, including the use of carrier pigeons. Also, the flu that was rampant during this time, and using the illness to one’s advantage!
A little sweet romance is offered, and in the beginning our main character Colin, we aren’t sure whom he is interested in, and in the end, can anything work out once secrets are revealed.
When all is done, and the last page is turned, a sense of loss was felt!

I received this book through Net Galley and the Publisher Bethany House, and was not required to give a positive review.

from endorsement:

Kate Breslin continues her tradition of writing sweeping historical romances that pair the adventurous spirit of Kate Quinn with the painstaking historical detail of Susan Meissner and Hazel Gaynor. A universe in itself, The Far Side of the Sea sweeps the reader to dashing European locales seen through the eyes of two unforgettable characters whose greatest daring lie in finding restoration and wholeness against the broken backdrop of a world at war. The thinking person’s adventure story, Breslin evokes classic literary tropes to create a robust and beautifully-written yarn capturing the heart while engaging the mind.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and Bethany House. A positive review was not required. These are my honest thoughts.

Now this is the type of book I like to read! I wasn’t really a fan of a different book by this author, so I was hesitant to ask for this one from NetGalley. Yet, there was something about the cover that drew me in. Having gone in with an open yet cautious mind (yes, I realize that sounds oxymoronic), I was pleasantly surprised to be completely swept away to 1910s England, France, and Spain on this wonderful adventure involving heroics, pigeons, spies, and a dash of romance.

Mrs. Breslin really shines in the WWI era. I’m now looking forward to reading more of her books. I love how she brought the settings and characters and, yes, the pigeons to life for me. I could nearly smell the salty sea breeze at one point, and I very much felt like Colin and Johanna were dear friends to me way before the midway point of this one. I’ll be revisiting this one for sure.

One particular lovely bit was that the leading man was an amputee. This gave me all sorts of wonderful chills. It's unusual to see this type of thing highlighted, let alone written in such a stunningly beautiful way. I applaud this author for her bravery in writing an exquisite character with a debilitating disability yet who fought hard to find his way back into independence and heroics. Colin was my favorite character in this book, and very likely my favorite character I've met this calendar year (2019).

My only complaints: one expletive and a strange replacement expletive phrase of “Titan’s teeth” (which kept popping up). That one was bizarre and completely unnecessary.

As a girl who grew up living vicariously through Nancy Drew, Cherry Ames, and Vickie Barr, there’s not much I love better in a book than clean-cut characters working their way through an adventure-ridden mystery with charm, handsome heroes a-plenty, and pretty clothes! Kate Breslin’s books are all that and more. When you add in thorough historical details, stunning settings, and a sweet inspirational message, you’ve got a winner!

The book takes place in 1918, and I so enjoyed the main couple’s meet cute: Johanna, in cap and goggles, riding up on a motorcycle and—Titan’s Teeth—asking Colin to stuff himself into the side car. Then they’re off to lovely locals in France and Spain in search of recapturing old loves, catching spies, stumbling over imposters, and falling in love.

I found Colin’s war experiences with the fellow soldiers and citizens who sacrificed to keep him alive particularly touching. A fascinating aspect of the story is Johanna’s work with carrier pigeons, which (in real life) successfully aided early intelligence efforts during World War I.

This sweeping, old-fashioned historical romance is a delight. If that’s your genre, grab a copy and enjoy!

At the conclusion of Not By Sight, Colin Mabry is left scarred both physically and emotionally from his action in World War I . He is now healed enough that he is ready to return to France to find Jewel Reyer who cared for him after he was wounded. But his trip to France leads not to Jewel but to her half-sister, Johanna as well as an espionage plot that leaves him wondering who he can trust. Johanna is filled with emotional scars, yet she is determined to find the father she has only met once in her life.

This book is filled with some unique aspects of World War I. The use of carrier pigeons in order to exchange messages from the war front to headquarters. Breslin's historical research into this part of the war machine was fascinating, and she included it in such an integral way that I learned about it as it took place throughout the story. Her inclusion of the various roles that espionage played was also well done.

My favorite scene in the story was Colin's explanation to Johanna about the difference between God's goodness and man's evil and his explanation of salvation. Breslin wove this in so seamlessly that it was not preachy but rather an answer to an honest question.

Filled with mystery, suspense, tender romance and faith, this was a beautiful and riveting read from start to finish.

Far Side of the Sea revisits beloved characters first introduced in Kate Breslin's stunning Not By Sight, a favorite read of 2018 (which I somehow never reviewed...I suppose that means I'll just have to re-read it!). Breslin's WWI novels are loosely interconnected but can stand wholly on their own, so if you've yet to discover Breslin's exquisite writing, one should feel no qualms about starting with this, her latest release, should it pique one's interest.

Colin Mabry was briefly introduced in Not by Sight as the brother of Grace, that novel's heroine, missing in action in the chaos of the European front. This novel picks up some months later and finds Colin attempting to come to terms with his new reality as an amputee, having lost his left hand in a tunnel collapse and haunted by memories of the terror he experienced. Tasked with decoding messages delivered by carrier pigeons from France, he is shocked to receive a missive from Jewel, the woman responsible for once risking her life to save his, and one he long thought lost. Gathering the tattered remnants of his courage, Colin returns to France, determined to keep his youthful promise to rescue Jewel from the horrors of war.

But instead of Jewel, another woman awaits him in Paris -- Jewel's half-sister Johanna, determined to find her long-lost sister with the help of the soldier who had once captured her sister's affections. Convinced her sister is in the clutches of a German spy, Johanna is desperate for Colin's help to find and free her sister. Colin reluctantly agrees to become Johanna's ally, and the two embark on a quest to find Jewel across France and Spain. But Johanna's fervor to find her remaining family conceals secrets of her own, ones if revealed would threaten the tenuous connection building between her and Colin. And more is at stake then Jewel's life, as secrets held by the sisters' long-lost father make Johanna and Colin unwitting pawns in a spy game with consequences far greater than either ever dreamed.

Breslin’s novels are exquisitely rendered snapshots of a moment in history, replete with detail and rich with atmosphere that completely transports the reader. I adored the journey across Europe as well as the spy thread of this plot, as it allowed Colin and Johanna to experience and reveal aspects of this period’s history that are not often the focus of similar fiction (at least in my experience). The emotional themes Breslin deals with in these pages are gutting – PTSD, illegitimacy, violent rebellion – and in lesser hands would risk seeming melodramatic or cheap. But Breslin is a master at unspooling emotional turmoil and depth with nuance and compassion, leading her characters through their respective valleys toward hope and restoration.

One of the things I love most about Breslin’s novels is the fairytale element she weaves throughout her romances. It is often a subtle nod, but that poignant element of timeless storytelling against the backdrop of a world at war makes Breslin’s expertly crafted storytelling resonate all the stronger. She is a master at crafting achingly honest characters and relatable journeys through a landscape of pitch-perfect historical detail. Colin and Johanna’s story stands as a fresh favorite thanks to the element of cross-country adventure woven throughout, aided in no small part by the unexpected charm of the role of heroic carrier pigeons in Colin and Johanna’s story. Their story focuses not on the front, but on its aftermath, and how those who survived the conflict strove to discover their “new normal.”

Now if only Marcus Weatherford would only get his own novel… 😊

I will definitely be reading the other Kate Breslin books that I have on my TBR. This book was amazing and I want more! My only regret is not reading this book in one sitting. I guess I just need to re-read it soon! ;)

Everything about this book was amazing, the characters, the action, the plot, EVERYTHING. I am a sucker for WW1 & WW2 books so this book right up my alley. I loved every single thing that I read. The characters in this book were too die for.

I absolutely loved Colin. He was such a deep character, that you really sympathized. He had his strengths and his flaws. He suffered from PTSD yet trusted God and God helped transform his life for the greater good.

I also really loved Joanna's character. She was an unique, and down to earth female lead that I really enjoyed getting to know. I loved seeing her love for her sister and father throughout this book, that was really heartwarming.

I LOVED the aspect of spies in this book. This book took place in France and had spies, and many many plot twists throughout the whole thing. Yes please! This book had me so invested that I really want to re-read just to see how everything fits together with reading it all at once.

I also have to applaud the author for the clear time she took in researching everything. I felt like I was actually reading something that someone wrote while they were there in the 1900's. Everything was so accurate and the details were amazing about every little thing. I am a sucker for that kind of stuff. #historynerd

Overall, I am very pleased with this book and I cannot wait to read Kate Breslin's other books!!

"God sees us with the heart."

A Downton Abbeyish spy thriller that held me completely spellbound. I binge-listened to the audible version which was brilliantly narrated by Sarah Zimmerman. I hung on every word and was sorely tempted to hike up the speed and listen chipmunk-style when things got tense. You'll be happy to know I resisted the urge...barely, choosing instead to savor every nuance of the exceptional storytelling.

Intrigue, danger, romance! Plot twists galore! I was thunderstruck numerous times. I'd get pretty full of myself, thinking I'd figured something out only to have Breslin blow me away with something so much better than anything I could imagine. And all the rich historical details -- be still my heart! Lots for a historical fiction connoisseur to swoon over. The carrier pigeon angle was utterly fascinating -- especially in view of our 21st century communication devices. Riveting stuff.

And then there's the hero and heroine. Colin with his misplaced sense of loyalty that set my heart aflutter even though I didn't want him to be that noble. lol And Johanna who has her own agenda. I wasn't sure about her at first but she grew on me, especially as the author wove a beautiful redeeming thread into her story. Theirs is the kind of love story that has the power to shred a sensitive reader's heart if she's not careful.

Another stunning novel from an author who knows how to deliver a delicious mix of intrigue, inspiration and the sweet promise of romance.

I read through this slowly to savour the story. Some parts kept me on the edge of my seat and other times I felt a calm gentleness as I learned about Colin and Johanna. Toward the end I felt some of the scenes were rushed. There are surprised along the way but not shocking. Enough to keep you guessing and routing for good to prevail. I enjoyed feeling the war from a France perspective, especially as the Spanish Flu came into play.

The romance is sweet and despite the usual misunderstandings that befalls relationships, I enjoyed the process. There are a couple, slightly detailed kisses.

The spiritual content was good although a bit vague at times.

This is a worthwhile story and worthy of a re-read in the future 😊

This was my favourite book by this author so far.

Her historical facts are well researched and detailed, and I enjoyed learning about the pigeon carriers used during WW1.

Why I enjoyed this one more than her other works: the spies, intrigue, dangers of who to trust and who not. The plot had me from the start and held on to my attention right till the end.

Colin and Jo had chemistry from the beginning, and I enjoyed “watching” their banter and fight to stay away from each other until they rescued Jewel.

Colin’s reaction to real life action and danger felt real, considering his past and his struggle to feel valuable and worthy after his injury.

After this book I am planning to read more by this author.

This is a lovely book. The characters, setting, and time period was wonderful. I felt connected to the characters and felt their disappointments and joys as they searched for Johanna's sister and father.

This book has intrigue and romance. The characters do not know who to trust as they journey. They are not even sure if they can trust each other. The story takes us from England, through France, and then to Spain during WWI.

This is a wonderful book. I give it a high recommendation. It is Christian fiction. I found it to be clean with kissing, and non-descriptive violence.

Fans of World War I historical fiction, you're going to want to check out Far Side of the Sea by Kate Breslin! With much attention given to historical detail, this book is full of intrigue, suspense, action, and a lively dash of romance.

This fourth novel of Kate Breslin's focuses on a side character from Not By Sight, and a plucky young woman with a shadowy past. Together, the forge through danger and drama amidst the war to find family, faith, and love.

I have really enjoyed some of this author's other books, but Far Side of the Sea didn't make the favorites list for me, personally. The beginning was quite promising ... but after a time, for some reason or another, I started to lose interest. I still finished this novel, and enjoyed it overall! But I felt there could have been more depth to the characters and the faith theme. And some of the historical detail was a bit overwhelming for me.

I think some readers will really love this book! It simply wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

Thanks to Bethany House Publishers for providing me with a complimentary copy of Far Side of the Sea. These are my personal, honest thoughts.

Kate Breslin’s books are always a such a delight. Her writing is gorgeous, and she always has you feeling as if you’re right in the middle of the story. Set during the Great War, with plenty of intrigue and action, you won’t want to set this down till you’ve turned the last page.

Lieutenant Colin Mabry has sacrificed many things over the course of the war. His body, his relationships and, not least of all, his sense of self-worth. Johanna Reyer’s life was never easy, even before the war began. As she searches for a father she’s only met once and a sister she never knew about, she hopes for a brighter future with her family. As they enter a world of spies and secrecy both realize they’ll leave this search very different from how they began it.

This book was full of tuns and plot twists. Just as I would figure one out, another would be thrown into the path and off I went, eagerly anticipating this new surprise. I spent a few late nights reading because I needed to know what happened next.

One of the most interesting elements of this story was the use of carrier pigeons. I knew that they were used in the war, but I never realized the extent of that use. Breslin’s research really shines through and left me hungry for more information on the subject. I was also fascinated with the spy craft. I’ve always been a sucker for a good spy story, and this delivered on that front. I found myself humming James Bond theme songs when I was forced to put the book down.I can easily see this being one of my top reads of the year and cannot recommend it enough.

I received a copy of this book from the author and Bethany House Publishers in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.

Far Side of the Sea by Kate Breslin is a fantastic, well researched story set in World War I.
This was a real joy to read. My favorite kind of historical novel is about the World Wars and behind-the-scenes spy craft. This book captured me with the first chapter and the subject of carrier pigeons and coding messages. From England, to romantic Paris, to beautiful Toulouse and sumptuous Barcelona, the scenery Ms. Breslin depicts puts you right there among the constantly changing intrigue. It was fascinating to see how cleverly the author fit together all of the pieces like an intricate puzzle.

Johanna Reyer begs for help from Lieutenant Colin Mabry. She wants to find her father and sister. He sets out for Paris to meet Johanna. Will they get more than they bargained for? Who can they trust during this war-torn time?

The relationships are complex, including the one between Colin and his boss Jack. Colin’s sister is engaged to Jack. Colin and Jack are more than future brothers-in-law, they are comrads in battle and both have been injured. But they have a focus of loyalty to their country and a thirst to see the war end.

This novel has a steady pace that keeps your interest page after page. It is the sequel to Not By Sight by the same author. It is beneficial to read that book but not necessary for the enjoyment of Far Side of the Sea.

*I was given a complimentary copy of this book by the publisher on behalf of the author. I was not required to give a favorable review. All opinions are my own. *

"We've had quite the adventure together, haven't we, Lieutenant?"

When British Lieutenant Colin Mabry is skillfully coerced into a covert meeting with a women he feared to be dead, his life takes on new meaning. . . . .if he remains alive to live it. However, it's a stranger who meets him in Paris; a lovely young woman with her half-sister's diary and a fiery determination to find the woman that Colin once fancied himself to love, but regrettably left behind to brave the ravages of war-torn France on her own.

Johanna Reyer is also following her father's trail; a man who spoke with both tenderness and regret upon their only meeting. Working at a dovecote for the French Army Intelligence, Johanna is well versed in subterfuge, which proves to be a distinct advantage, for it's going to take every bit of military savvy that Colin Mabry possesses to lead Johanna through the twisted trails of messages and messengers that they encounter on their trek across France and Spain. In reality, their mission is not at all what it seems.

What a sweet, brilliant mix of hold-your-breath intrigue and be-still-my- heart romance!

The cover for Kate Breslin’s latest novel drew me in from the moment I saw it. Once I began reading this incredible story of bravery, however, I found myself living the pages with the characters. In many ways it was a difficult novel, as it deals with real issues faced by characters who seemed very real as I read, but it is one I highly recommend.

Johanna is not necessarily the most common of heroines—we first meet her in mud-splattered clothing from traveling on a motorcycle. But she is a perfect complement to Colin, a wounded hero who still has some recovery ahead of him. The two of them interact with tension and a bit of distrust, but when spying is involved, knowing how much to say and to whom is a complicated business.

The history is fascinating. I knew very little about WWI, and even less about how carrier pigeons played a role in it, at least before reading this novel. Espionage, steganography, “plants,” fake cities, and defections also receive some mention, but I love how this all just forms the backdrop for a well-plotted tale. Now my interest is piqued, however, and I look forward to learning more about this time after reading this book.

The spiritual content is fantastic; both characters have some growth to do, but I loved how Colin doesn’t let his own struggles keep him from pointing Johanna in the right direction. And it is an encouragement to know that God really does have a plan, even when we cannot see it in the middle of our own valleys.

This is an excellent story, beautifully crafted. Those who have an interest in WWI Europe, carrier pigeons, or historical spycraft will find much to love in this novel, but it can be easily enjoyed by anyone without deep knowledge of any of these topics simply for the engrossing tale of family, love, and healing.

I received a review copy of this book from the author and publisher but was under no obligation to post a positive review. The opinions expressed are both honest and my own.

Far Side of the Sea was such an amazing read! I loved starting this book and realizing it was about the brother from Not by Sight. Such a neat surprise, as I didn't realize they were connected.

I really enjoyed the mystery and spy aspect. I was right on one of my guesses of who NOT to trust. The romance was also very good.

All in all, Far Side of the Sea was fantastic and I recommend it to fans of the genre. I think you should read Not By Sight first, then Far Side of the Sea, and lastly In Love's Time...since they are all connected.

'Despite his prayers, a year of fighting had taught him that peace was someone's naïve ideal, a vague optimism offered to comfort the suffering. A distant dream beyond reach.'

Taking up where Not By Sight left off, Kate Breslin brings us another tale of war, espionage and courage. It's 1918 and Lt. Colin Mabry, injured in the war, and now serving decoding messages for his country, receives an urgent message by carrier pigeon from a woman who saved his life and is now in grave danger. When he goes to France to meet her, he discovers her sister is the one who sent the message. These two travel through France and Spain to find the truth and keep ahead of the enemy. Will they trust one another completely, even when they are embroiled in a treacherous plot and must battle for their lives?

Breslin once again gives her readers rich details of the time period and causes us to think of all those brave men and women did and suffered for the cause of war. Recommended.

I so enjoyed getting to read Colin's story! I really enjoyed the espionage storyline and felt the mystery wasn't too intense but still held my interest... I also liked the carrier pigeons. :) The relationship between Colin and Joanna developed really nicely, and I enjoyed their discussions and getting to know them individually. I liked the faith content in this one pretty well but there were times I would have appreciated a little more depth, especially from Joanna. We see Colin quote scripture many times and read how he attempts to council Joanna, but her storyline fell a little flat and I would have appreciated a better arch for the leading lady. The action is a little slower paced, but I prefer more character-driven stories myself so I didn't find the slowness to be an issue for me. Overall, an entertaining story!

I loved this book. It is a World War 1 romance and intrigue novel full of complicated, wonderful characters, spies, lies and pigeons!
I loved the different settings and even though I know very little about World War 1, I quickly became immersed in the time period.
The plot kept me guessing throughout. I was never quite sure who was lying and how the romance was going to end.
The book explores the topics of prayer and finding faith.
I believe this book follows characters from her earlier book Not by Sight, so I’ll be putting that on my wish list.

Oh my goodness, where do I begin? I loved this book so much.

A couple of months ago, I binged all of Kate Breslin's books, and was super excited to find that she was releasing another one! I couldn't wait to read it - and my high expectations were definitely met.

I find it hard to believe that Kate Breslin has only published four books! She writes so very well, and especially for the genre! As a writer myself, I know the difficulty of being able to accurately write stories set in a location far from my native land. Kate set this book in England, France, and Spain - but not once did I doubt that she didn't live there. WWI is also one of my favorite time periods, and she writes the historical part of this fictional novel SO WELL. I love how this book isn't just a romance - it's a historical romance, with mystery! I loved the mystery aspect, and it kept me reading until the end! Kate's books have all proven to be very hard to put down.

I loved Colin's character. I can only imagine what it would be like to have gone through what he did, and yet his character is strong and he still trusts God. He's not bitter, like many who have had the same injury, and he is so real. I think his struggles are really accurate. Johanna, likewise, is another wonderful character. She's witty, she's strong, she struggles. I despise characters who don't struggle. They're not human. But Kate's characters are very, very human.

Lastly - THIS COVER! I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it. It's so beautiful, and I love the merger of the vintage-inspired photo and the old black and white. Simply lovely.

All in all, this fourth book of Kate's was just as good as all the rest. I had high expectations and was not disappointed, and I'm so glad I got to read it! It will definitely be one I'll reread many times...it's just so good.

FTC Disclosure: I received a complimentary copy of this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review; these are my honest thoughts and opinions.
