The Creator Revealed: A Physicist Examines the Big Bang and the Bible

Rate this book
Do current scientific discoveries support or contradict the story of creation in the Bible? Does science give evidence for or against Gods existence? Does it matter what you think about origins, science, and the Bible? Does your understanding of science and creation affect your daily living or your relationship with God? In The Creator Revealed, author and physicist Dr. Michael G. Strauss explores these central questions about science and faith in simple and entertaining language, showing how modern scientific discoveries about the origin and design of the universe proclaim the character of God and agree with the biblical story of creation. For the Christian confronted with possible inconsistencies between faith and science, and for the skeptic who believes modern science has shown that belief in God is unnecessary, The Creator Revealed can demonstrate the glory, power, and wonder of God by looking at science, the Bible, and the effect that truth has on peoples lives. Reconciling the truth of scripture with the truth of science can change your perspective and your life. The message of The Creator Revealed will expand your idea of who God is, increase your faith in him, and provide a way to share this revelation of God in creation with others.

Dr. Michael G. Strauss is a David Ross Boyd professor of physics at the University of Oklahoma in Norman. He conducts research in experimental elementary particle physics at CERN laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, where he studies the fundamental particles and forces in the universe.

With an interest in science and theology, Dr. Strauss attended Biola University, where he studied both subjects in detail. After graduating from Biola, he pursued a graduate degree in physics at the University of California in Los Angeles. As a graduate student, he was fascinated with quantum mechanics and subatomic physics, so he joined a high-energy physics experimental group doing research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC). At SLAC, he measured the polarization of particles produced in quark fragmentation. He graduated from UCLA in 1988 with his PhD in elementary particle physics.

Dr. Strauss continued to do research at SLAC as a postdoctoral researcher in association with the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. His research interests centered on using the silicon pixel vertex detector to identify heavy quark flavors while he was studying quantum chromodynamics as a member of the SLD experimental collaboration.

In 1995, he joined the faculty of the Homer L. Dodge Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Oklahoma. As a faculty member, he conducted research at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago, where he continued to study the properties of quark and gluon interactions.

Dr. Strauss has primarily taught introductory physics classes to engineers, life science majors, and physics majors. He has received a number of awards for his teaching and research, including the Associated Students’ Outstanding Professor in the College of Arts and Science, the BP AMOCA Foundation Good Teaching Award, the Regents Award for Superior Teaching, and the Carlisle Mabrey and Lurine Mabrey Presidential Professorship.

Dr. Strauss speaks at universities, schools, and churches throughout the world on the relationship between science and Christianity. He enjoys riding his bicycle through the rolling hills of Oklahoma and spending time with his wife and children. He is one of the four general editors of Zondervan’s Dictionary of Christianity and Science.

Strauss correctly points out that the universe is too precisely designed to be an accident. The author's goal is to make Genesis one compatible with scientific evidence. Here is his solution.

"A story of creation told from God’s perspective, as he sees it on the surface of the earth..." Kindle Loc. 1322

He says this even though he earlier said God couldn't be confined to space and time. He also points out the Psalm of Moses (Psalm 90);

"Do you notice how Moses is using the evening and morning as metaphors for the beginning and ending of a human life?" loc. 1191

So what do we do with that? Strauss uses it to show that the creation days don't have to be 24 hours in his progressive creation. Strauss is a scientist and not a theologian.

I decided to push my way through this book because it's been sitting on my bookshelf since high school. And because it's short. The science was not wrong. The theology and writing style were pretty infuriating but it got less terrible as I went on. And of course the whole idea of coming to a conclusion and then figuring out how the universe can support that preconceived conclusion is extremely unscientific. But for people who are so sheltered in the evangelical bubble that they would never trust non-Christian scientists, I suppose this is better than nothing. Maybe.

Progressive Creation Explained

I'm a Christian and found this book very helpful, having come to the same conclusions about the big bang as Strauss, this book has aided me in articulating my beliefs that science and the Bible go hand in hand without a compromise to either.

This is the most succinct yet non-technical book I have read about the implications of the big bang on Christianity. I love that Strauss presents the basic case for the big bang from both nature and the Bible side-by-side. I loved his focus on Romans 1:20 and his clarifying that the big bang is inherently a theistic theory (it is not an atheistic theory, as many Christians incorrectly believe), and that is what actually caused the majority of the scientific community to reject the clear evidence for so long. I particularly appreciate his dedication to biblical inerrancy as he presents a careful and exegetical case from Scripture. He addresses the most common challenges and questions from Christians to help remove any fear that they are compromising Scripture or God's character at any point by following the evidence where it leads.

Strauss' concise descriptions, use of analogies, stories from his life, and the sprinkling of jokes throughout makes a rather dry subject very enjoyable, understandable, and exciting. The length of each chapter and the book as a whole are perfect for those who are curious but do not have the time to devote to the more in-depth and technical works available (although it may spark an interest in pursuing a deeper investigation). With all of these characteristics and the fact that it covers an extremely important evangelistic tool, "The Creator Revealed" is a must-have book for every Christian who is passionate about the Great Commission. This book needs to be in every church library and on the bookshelf of every Christian parent and educator and pastor. Most every Christian knows someone who has dismissed Christ from their lives because they believe that the creation, via the big bang, eliminates the need for the Creator. God has placed you in their life to show them how they have unnecessarily rejected their Savior. Get this book, and prepare yourself to "give [them] a reason for the hope that you have" (1 Peter 3:15).

I was given this book by a neighbor in an act of religious proselytization. He felt that the book's arguments would convince me, as a scientist, of the veracity of Christian religious claims. However, the aim of the book is really the converse: to show believers that the tenets they already subscribe to—founded in the idea that the Bible contains only inerrant truth—are not threatened by empirical scientific facts. Or, at least, the facts of cosmology and geology. An argument is put forward that the chronology of the big bang, the formation of the earth, and the origin of life are consistent with the creation described in Genesis. For a religious person, these arguments will seem sound. To one who believes that, in the absence of empirical evidence, the best explanation is the simplest—the most metaphysically lean—the arguments will seem superfluous. To both, they will seem overly drawn out, hokey, and pompous (the book, for example, is referred to by its own title many times throughout the chapters).

And then we come to the treatment of evolution. This man, whose thesis is that the findings of modern science support the textual claims of the Christian religion, writes that "in my opinion at this time, progressive creation is the best interpretation of the fossil record....every living thing carries a tremendous amount of information in its DNA. In all our experience, we know that information is a product of some kind of intelligence." It strikes me that he is picking and choosing the areas of science that support the Christian tenets, just like so many religious textualists pick and choose the verses that support their dogma.

Wow, what an amazing book that clearly reveals how we can reconcile the truth of scripture with the truth of science. The book is worth it just for the fact that he lays the groundwork for the basic understanding that the Big Bang theory actually allows us to believe in a Creator/Designer at the beginning of our world and universe, a transcendent creator if you will. You will find in the book that the evidence that the big bang was God's method of creation is compelling for many reasons. There is also so much more that he lays out regarding how for example to square the age of our planet and universe (which by the way is ever expanding) that 99% of the scientists believe it is with the creation story in Genesis 1. There is also a case for believing that our planet is indeed very unique compared to other planets in other parts of our universe. I recommend this book highly to anyone wanting to understand how their faith in the biblical narrative of the days of creation stacks up to the world of science. It will strengthen your faith I do believe.

Great exposition of the scientific evidence for God

This book is a really good exposition of the scientific facts for the origin of the universe and the existence of God, in an easy to read and understand manner for people like me who don't have a scientific background.
I also really appreciated the way Dr. Strauss was not offensive towards people who have a different perspective, like atheists or Christians with different interpretations. This make this text a good book to share with anyone, Christians and non-christians alike.

Book starts well, he explains Big Bang in some detail using ordinary language. He then proceeds with a very concordist explanation of how the Big Bang and the 14 billion years of time are perfectly described by the genesis 1 6 day story. I was not convinced. He does not mention another possible interpretation: it’s a creation poem not history. He does not address the problem of genesis 2 stating the creation events in a different order. So on balance, good science, not convinced of his theological explanation.

Not convinced of big bang!

Dr.Strauss used a set of statistics in response to young earth creation that were not backed up with citations or facts. I suggest that he visit creation.com and the scientists that he dismisses so readily will be able to answer some of his YEC questions. God is great and Jesus is the king of kings...on this we agree. Thank you my Christian brother.

Does a wonderful job of meshing the worlds of scientific research and biblical faith. With a particular focus on the big bang, the author shows how confidence in the fundamental creation works its way through all areas of life. Important resource for those who are struggling to match up what they are taught in church with what is taught in places of higher learning.

Since I was already familiar with most of the content presented, I'm not exactly in the target audience; however, this is the book I wish I had in high school when I went through a young-earth induced crisis of faith. Excellent resource for folks who want to dip their toes in the science/faith topic.

A concise, easy to read book on how the big bang agrees with what the Bible teaches about creation. This book is a good starting point for an overview on this subjects. Hopefully after reading this book, the reader will want to read other books that have more details. But this is a great introductory book to get a person started on this topic.

Life and the cosmos

Strauss examines the Big Bang from a Christian perspective, and comes to the conclusion that an intelligent designer (God) is demonstrated.
This book is suitable for people with no religious or scientific knowledge, and is written in an extremely easy to read format.

I wish Dr. Strauss was still teaching physics at OU when I took it — an interesting read detailing how creation points to the existence of God

Romans 1:20,
“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — His eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

The Creator Revealed was a great read.

I liked the balanced view of science and theology that Dr. Strauss used to approach a very challenging subject.
I could recommend The Creator Revealed to anyone interested in a balanced study of science and theology concerning creation.

Science and Theology in alignment

Ideally written for the non-physicists among us who seek a better understanding of Creation. A well documented study of the Biblical creation story and its alignment with scientific evidence.

I recommend this book as the point is sound. He believes that the Big Bang is described in the biblical creation, but he stops short with evolution of life because he does not understand that subject.
