HARD KNOCKS

Gideon Valsecchi had done the impossible when he busted out of the grueling poverty and pre-ordained existence his life had been on the South Side of Chicago. His free ride at college is the stepping stone to a career with a professional soccer team. And when his dream comes true it's not what he expects—sacrifice shouldn't taste this bitter, especially when the love of his life is what he's missing and can't seem to hold on to.

Elijah Tucker wants to give Gideon Valsecchi the world on a silver platter. And he has the means to do it. But Eli is learning the truth of the maxim that the way you hold onto the thing you want most is to let it go. And while his heart breaks into a thousand pieces, he doesn't come apart even when the worst happens. Because, even as cliché as it sounds...true love does find a way.

Two reasons I rated this 5 Stars:

1. The author. Riley Parks has a writing style that just works for me. I love how her characters are different and don't fit the usual molds. I also love how she takes hard-nosed characters and softens them but also keeps them "true".

2. Elijah.❤️❤️ He’s so sweet and good. I love how he is with Gideon, how he just wants the best for him, sacrificing his desires so Gideon can have it all. I love how he is obsessed with Gideon and wants to be with him or is thinking about him all the time (not sure that's healthy IRL but it works for me in books).

3. Okay, so three reasons...Bryce. Oh, how I love him!😍 He’s funny and loyal. He’s such a good friend to everyone. I can't wait for his story. He just always knows what to say or do so I'm anxious to see how he handles his own love life.

But I gotta tell ya, Gideon was on my last damn nerve. He was such a selfish little shit.😡 Thank goodness we see growth in this book but I still wanted to strangle him. At one point I was ready for Elijah to tell him to fuck off. My complaint in book 1 was that he didn't seem to "need" Elijah like Eli did him but I do see it here. I know he was obsessed with Eli. But, just when I was really liking him and warming up to him, he pulls a dick move! I was so angry with him. But hey...if I didn't get the HEA I wanted, I wouldn't have given it 5 stars. Thankfully he pulls his head out of his ass and goes after what he knows he needs and wants.

I can't wait for more of Riley's work and I'm hoping we get to see more of these two in future books. Gideon is a little "averse" to a particular "something" that I'm hoping he will eventually change his mind about 😉

I know I’m going to have to do some ducking from the rotten tomatoes that are about to be thrown my way….

I made the conscious decision to read this book with a more sympathetic view towards Gideon. I kept in mind that he was young, and before Elijah, he’d a tough life. Turns out, I didn’t have to try so hard.

I could tell that Gideon had matured, and I felt he really loved Elijah. He was more open with his affections physically, verbally and publicly. But Elijah’s love for Gideon was so overwhelmingly obsessive, Gideon’s love for Elijah couldn’t compare. Truth be told, I’m surprised Gideon didn’t feel suffocated. I guess he was too busy reaping the rewards of being spoiled. And spoiled he was. But I couldn’t lay the fault 100% on him. From the beginning of their relationship, Elijah made Gideon his priority. Elijah’s identity became “Gideon’s boyfriend”. Aside from the sex (and damn that was some deliciously dirty sex), Elijah came off as a parent spoiling his child. He was, to quote Bryce, “daddy as fuck”. Too bad daddy doesn’t practice disciplining.

The only time the age difference came into play was when marriage was mentioned. And it wasn’t even a discussion between the MCs. They each had a separate conversion with Bryce. It totally made sense that Elijah loved the idea, while the thought of it scared Gideon. Elijah is a successful grown up and Gideon is still “growing up”. I really appreciated that Riley Parks kept that very real.

Now, what didn’t make sense was Elijah hanging out with Gideon’s friends. Seriously? Why would he want to hang out with a bunch of partying 20-year-olds? Why wasn’t Gideon occasionally hanging out with Elijah’s friends? Did Elijah have friends? Again, it was all about Gideon. Yes, I was frustrated. I wanted Elijah to act more like an adult in the relationship and less like a love sick, needy puppy.

When Gideon did what he did. It sucked but…hey, you spoil a child, and that child is going to act spoiled and take you for granted. Elijah forgave him way too quickly. Gideon should have been made to grovel. But Gideon is Elijah’s kryptonite so….

I’m ready for Bryce and Kieran’s story, but I’m also hoping to get more on Elijah and Gideon.

Okay so, I've dithered about with my rating on this one. See, there was so much I loved about it .... Eli, Bryce and Riley Parks' writing which just works for me. BUT ... and it's a big but (ha!) I lost patience and a bit of respect for Gideon. I gave him leeway in Watch Me Fall because of his age and circumstances and had hoped to see character growth in this second book, and if I'm honest I didn't see much of that.

Fall Beside You picks up two years later and Eli is just, if not more, amazing than he was in WMF. He adored and idolised Gideon and I wanted Gideon to reciprocate big style. There was a little shown, but it seemed to come across as half-hearted at times. I'm a greedy sod and wanted more from him, he seemed to be mostly oblivious to Eli's feelings. Not nice. When he pulled that monumental shit for brains stunt at 87% my update status was "selfish little shit", and he was that .... with damn bells on. I've not wanted to slap a character so hard for a long time! And this is contrarily one of the reasons why I have to rate this higher than I thought I would, RP manages to pull all the feels out of me including me wanting to shake some sense into Gideon. Gideon, you're on my "pissed me off" shelf, whereas Eli is on the perfect hero shelf ... right at the top!

HUUUGE win for me was (of course) Elijah. That man .... gah! He's everything I want to read in a perfect hero. I love that man so so hard. And Bryce, he is one hell of a unique character and I can't wait for his and Kieran's story.

So, all the stars for Eli, Bryce and Kieran, but Gideon totally took the shine off those stars.

Riley Parks does it again. All of my stars are for Elijah. One of the best heroes I’ve read about. He’s so caring and honest. Now Gideon on the other hand, I was loving him more too then I was hating him, and in the end I loved him again. I’m so excited for Bryce and Kieran’s story. Bryce is without a doubt one of my favorite secondary characters ever.

4 STARS!
"The way he talks about you, looks at you, considers you . . . that's special."
Aahhh! I loved Gideon and Elijah - and their raw, passionate relationship. But, man, what a train wreck!

Fall Beside You concludes the story of Gideon...
The tattoos on his knuckles and "WTF did you say?" attitude screamed who he was and where he was from.
and Elijah...
Regardless how well he'd done for himself, he always feared one day people would figure out that he was faking it all along, that he didn't deserve everything he'd earned, that he'd gotten lucky.
Together, they've found happiness...
Gideon felt that they were the same: two men who found something resilient in each other when all that had ever surrounded them was breakable.
But how long before their self-doubt undermines all they've worked for?

There's definitely something special about Riley Parks' writing; it's so honest and true-to-life with its crisp and vivid portrayal of characters who work their way under your skin - flaws and all!

Gideon and Elijah's desperate love bled from the pages; their neediness and insecurities were palpable as they struggled to hold on to each other. It was heartbreaking really, like watching two grown men fumble around in a darkened china shop. I knew it was going to come crashing down sooner or later.

Their emotional tug of war had me practically keeping tally of their sins, LOL. And unlike most readers, I found Elijah more at fault . . . until closer to the end. It all made for a wonderfully bittersweet roller coaster ride.

It wasn't all angst though. Bryce and his humor made for some great comic relief; I can't wait to read his story next!

If you're looking for something different, that falls outside the usual realm of romance, I definitely recommend Riley Parks. Her work is like a breath of fresh air.

Here's my favorite quote:
It was easy to feel solid when he was held in strong, sturdy arms, and difficult to think that he'd shatter if those loving limbs ever let go.

So. I read a few reviews and I am not going to go with the general sentiment here.
Gideon... He was a brat. TRUE THAT. But Elijah... This is the one of the 2 of them that really annoyed me!

I liked the book. Riley Parks writing is really good and her characters are, so far, very real so it's always a win in that regard...
I was less into it than the first book, though.
It might have something to do with the soccer thing... (I'm French and I have to say I'm so tired to hear about soccer right now... You know.. World Cup... So yeah... I might not have chosen the best time to read this book too...)
Also probably because I thought nothing really happened in the first part of the book. It was just Gideon & Elijah loving each other, obsessing over each other, having sex every few minute (not complaining there... Like AT ALL... It was hot)

description

2 years in the relationship. Elijah & Gideon love each other, passionately. Fiercely.
Gideon's dream however is still to become a soccer pro and that means a good chance that he will have to go play far away from Eli...

Like I said. Gideon is a little brat. I completely get him though. Maybe because I recognize a little bit of myself in his antisocial attitude, his fear of heartache and his cowardice.
He's grown since book 1. He's more mature and even if his attitude is still shit most of the time. He can recognize when he's not right!
Well I liked him.

Elijah though... I had more difficulties with him. I liked him too but his feelings were more like obsession and it felt weird at time.
The fact that he let Gideon go with everything... It was frustrating because.. Yeah. Don't complain when the guy act like a jerk when you basically always caved when it came to anything...
He was still very adorable though... Just too obsessive for my liking.

description

Why not 5 stars?
Like I said. The beginning of the book felt really long but the end on the other end felt rushed...
Gideon went crawling back (not enough in my humble opinion...), Elijah forgive and in 20 pages it's a wrap...
I felt like something was missing.
But I felt the love between the MCs, which is the most important thing for me so, WIN!

And I really LOOOOVED Bryce best BFF EVER.
I really can't wait for his book!

Ready to see how life turns out for Elijah and Gideon? Fans of the Start Something series are going to love this one! In Fall Beside You, Riley Parks combines humor, hot sex, and the clever dialogue she writes so well, to bring us the conclusion of this fast paced and very romantic, love story.

Now together for two years, Eli and Gideon are a well-established couple. Don’t worry, these two still know how to rock the sheets and have even added some creative toys (Eli spares no expense where Gideon’s orgasms are concerned). Parks’ sex scenes are some of the best I’ve read, and the fire between these two men is so genuine, I’ll never get tired of it.

There’s more going on in Fall Beside You than incredible sex though. Tension comes into play as these two figure out the next step in Gideon’s career. Not thrilled with being a student, but continuing to tear up the soccer field, Gideon is clearly a candidate for Major League Soccer and wants to try for his dream.

While Eli does everything he can to ensure Gideon’s success, both men know how this is going to play out. When Gideon gets drafted, the reality of a long distance relationship is staring them in the face, and they both know how hard that’s going to strain their love life.

Riley Parks does an amazing job with the alternating points-of-view in this story. We get to see how both men are processing everything that happens along the way. Sweet, devoted Elijah, with his almost desperate love for Gideon, is so appealing; he just works for me on every level. I have to say how glad I am to see Eli being proactive about his mental health. With both feet planted firmly on the ground, Elijah is 100% committed to success in his future.

There are also some terrific moments in Fall Beside You, with Elijah in work mode. It’s such a turn on watching him closing the big deals and interacting with the Chicago realtor moguls. And when stuff gets intense, the scenes with his awesome support staff are some of the funniest in the book.

As far as Gideon is concerned, he handles his life about the way I’d expect of a 20 year-old young man. He’s self-centered and immature one minute, and doting and awestruck the next. What matters is that he realizes what a great thing he has. I know he’s devoted to Elijah, he just needs to figure things out for himself… and hopefully he makes the right decisions when it counts.

Riley Parks has a way of writing that’s so engaging and fun, reading her stories is an absolute blast. These are some of the most real and genuine characters I’ve ever read and there’s never a dull moment. I know I can count on her to deliver a happy ending in the most pleasant, low angst way possible and to turn out the hottest sex scenes. I promise you won’t be disappointed with Fall Beside You!

Hopefully, with Elijah’s biological clock a-ticking, the writing’s on the wall for many more episodes in this engaging series (fingers crossed)! I know Bryce and Kieran’s story is coming, and I can’t wait! Their dynamic is off the charts, amazing.

I’m sorry. I don’t think I’ve ever gave a book 1 star before.
Usually when a book bore me to death or I don’t care for the story/characters I don’t rate it at all.
In this case that wasn’t the problem. I did care for the characters. The story about Eli and Gideon started in the previous book (which was okay but not great) and we stayed with nice HFN. I thought, obviously something gonna change in the second book. Eli will come to his senses and understand that Gideon is a little brat and leave him (my prefer option) or Gideon will come to his senses and will realize what he have and grow the f*ck up. Needless to say that nothing really changed until the last 5% of the book, which felt like the fastest and easiest way to get an HEA, and I felt like a desperate reader who’s praying for something good that never really came (at least not something remotely satisfying).
I’m allowing myself to say I’m very disappointed ‘cause I know the story could’ve been better. The debut novel by this author “Bleeding Like Me” is a favorite of mine and I really hoped for better.

I finished this book within two days! Riley Parks knows how to write addictive stories with mesmerizing, complex characters. Ever since I read their first book Watch Me Fall earlier this year, I've been eagerly awaiting the sequel to Gideon and Elijah's lovestory. These two are so dreamy and sexy together and especially Elijah is literally the most perfect boyfriend ever! His love for Gideon is all consuming and a wee bit obsessive. My favorite kind :D Not exactly healthy but I dig this intensity in my books. Gideon is way younger than Elijah so he acted a bit irrational at times but I sort of understood him . But he loves Elijah just as much. He just doesn't have that much experience and I understood that Elijah's love could be a bit overwhelming at times.

I loved Gideon and Elijah's journey and I did not want it to end. I felt the ending of the book was a teeny bit aprupt and I really hope we get more of those two in the future. Bryce's book is next and I can't wait to read about his journey. He is simply hilarious and I loved his and Kieran's dynamic.

Riley, I hope there are a ton of books to come in the future :)

This didn't work for me at all ... I couldn't stand Gideon!! This author is totally destroyed and sabotaged the character of Gideon ... he is extremely unlikeable, supremely obnoxious, entirely self centred, incredibly immature, and ridiculously entitled >:-o!!! I do not like him at all and I do not want him for Elijah; Elijah deserves much much MUCH better and much much MUCH more!!! There's flawed and there's irredeemable, and Gideon is completely irredeemable to me!!! Like I said, I COULD NOT stand him!!!!!
