Life in the swamp just got wilder… “The Swamp Massacre.” That’s what the media dubbed it. A family on a boat tour through the Florida Everglades. Abducted by the infamous Roy family. Forced to endure hell. Five years later, an aspiring filmmaker and her friends are keen on making a documentary about the incident. In this terrifying follow-up to the critically acclaimed Wildlife, Reckoning plunges us deeper into the darkest corners of the swamp…and reminds us that man is the deadliest animal of all. Let's do some word association, shall we?
I'm going to give you two words, and you must say the first thing that pops into your head.

If I say:
Tattoo Needle and Quadriplegic...

Yes, that is correct - Scoreboard.

If this offends you, do not read this book.
If it made you snort and suppress a chuckle, you will enjoy it.

Not as good as the first one, but a damn good try.

A fast, supergraphic dark follow-up to book #1 (Wildlife) and is filled with some serious psychopaths, who entertain themselves in the most demented, unimaginable ways.

Jeff Hays and Annie Ellicott's narration was exceptionally disturbing, making this listen an especially over the top and thrilling nail-biter. Well done!

You need to read stories from Jeff Menapace!!!!!!

And, here I thought the original “Wildlife” was awesome.... this sequel killed it. The author certainly accomplished what he set out to do, which was entertain. You will whip through this book, like you do with all his other novels. Jeff is always terrific with his character descriptions, as well as his storytelling. Although there were some brutal kills in this novel, I did have a few questions about some of those and the characters.
SPOILER:
1. Leah seemed kinda like the badass of the group so why was she the first to run out of the water? I would have thought she would be a tougher chick that would have endured a more complex kill scene.
2. Why did Travis put his father through the most brutal torture? It made sense that it would be an intimate kill but it also seemed that the guards who raped him got off easy... except maybe for one.
3. Travis was a liar and a coward as a child. Experience does change you but I wonder if we should not have seen more of his cowardice in the face of strong opposition? I do love how Jeff made him a very complex character.

My favourite two characters in this novel were definitely Uncle Harlan and Stacey.

Wildlife: Next? Can hardly wait for the sequel. Enjoyed reading. Only trouble with most writers is the endings are too quickly decided or over with. In a split second everything happened to end the sto. Needs to be drawn out a bit more. The climax comes too fast, too soon, and boom! Everything is over with. Drag the endings out a bit more.

I guess I said it all in the heading. Whoops! Most writers bring the end of their stories to abrupt ending, like they want to get things over with. Drag out the endings a bit

What's not to love?

Just read both of the Reckoning books in less than 24 hours. Like the Wrong Turn movies except taking place in the Florida Everglades. Jeff Menapace, there's a dark side to the affable looking author. And probably a worse dark side to those that read his work. Impossible to stop reading these books. Sometimes sequels disappoint but this one fulfills the promise of the first. Definitely not for those with a weak stomach the action never lags.

I never write reviews, but I really needed to this time.
This book was so good I finished it in one day! The story hits the ground running and then about halfway through turbo jets kick in! If you like twisted, psychological craziness, stop what you’re doing and read these books. The first book was fantastic and this one was even better!

These books are just brilliant - something tells you you shouldn't but you just can't look away. Jeff Menapace does this genre brilliantly and you can't stop turning the pages.....I love how in a short space of time you know all the characters and I can really see them, like watching a film in my head. I read the Bad Games series too and now need another fix!

The pace of the book was off. I felt like it needed an extra 100 pages as we spent a long time getting where the story was heading and then in a few pages it is done.

This book is the follow up to the book Wildlife and continues the story several years on. A group of film makers are doing an investigative documentary on the original Roy family murders, and are trying to talk to people in the area to get a different insight. Group leader Stacey thinks she has located where the real Roy house is, rather than the easier to reach one that is presented to the tourists to visit. The team need someone local to show them to the house but when they accidently choose a Roy family member to take them, they will soon be subjected to terror on a whole new level.

The book begins with what happened to two of the characters who survived the first book. Tucker agreed to go to prison on the condition that his son Travis was sent to a good posh boarding school and looked after to give him a chance at a new life. However Tucker was conned by his legal team and the authorities, who sent his son to the notorious boys home where rape, humiliation and torture are the order of the day. Tucker is about to find out what happened to his only child and Travis is no longer the stupid child that caused a war. He is out to get revenge on everyone who he feels has wronged him and has become the most dangerous Roy of all.

Out in the swamp lives the extended Roy family led by Cooper Roy with daughter Trudy, son-in-law Wayne and their daughter Darla. They are about to 'welcome' two other members of the other Roy family to their home and decide to celebrate with a special games night where they capture people to use in a series of deadly games and the family can bet on who survives and dies. Tonight, when the documentary team meet the Roys, the crew will have a starring role in the entertainment. But even amongst a twisted family like the Roys there is little harmony and a lot of tension and angst.

I enjoyed the first book which featured one small lie causing a war between two families which left several people dead. This book features a different Roy family who are even more dangerous, as they don't wait for a legitimate reason to torture and kill people, instead doing it for entertainment when they are bored. Young Darla is a complete psychopath that I wanted to strangle throughout the book! She really drove me mad. I liked seeing the different extended Roy family and their twisted ideas, and the issues that they had with other.

The games were great fun to read about. The unlucky victims are put into a series of challenges, sometimes an individual being tested against a gator, or all of them in a scary last person standing challenge where it takes luck and skill to survive. As the twisted Roys bet on their performances, the survivors in each game have to find a way to use their head and get out of the mess that they are in. I enjoyed the plot and the characters were interesting enough to read about in the context of a twisted family tortures innocents kind of way. You are never quite sure what game is coming next and it makes me want to stay far away from swamps!

The two Wildlife books were the first experience of the work of this author but they won't be the last. I have already bought the first book in the Bad Games series which has a similar type of plot and I look forward to reading that at some point.

Wildlife: Reckoning is a horror thriller that plays on the edge of extreme horror. The nature of the content and expert presentation of said content may be a bit much for those who prefer mainstream horror. Jeff Menapace masterfully outdoes himself in this dark continuation of the Wildlife story.

Yes, continuation. This is not merely a new story in the same setting, it is a skillfully done continuation. Menapace uses subplots and elements of multiple horror subgenres to bring this visceral and shocking story to terrifying life. Psychological horror elements are the thread weaving the graphic elements together around diverse, well-crafted characters. The story transcends the synopsis with surprising depth and complexity. It is solid, engrossing, and ultimately a nail-biter.

To expound on my views, let’s discuss the characters and characterization a bit more in depth. No spoilers, of course. The group of friends on the documentary quest are a believable lot, diverse individuals whose interactions with one another are relatable and insightful. The “bad guys” are also diverse, varying in psychology, intent, and personality. There is no singular level or type of evil here.

There is no way to thoroughly review this as I would like to without spoilers. But I will say, the story is very well constructed. Menapace uses classic elements of horror to tell this tale: suspense, gore, even delicate foreshadowing that manages to give nothing away. It is a page-turner, darkly engrossing, emotionally draining. I would cause it a guilty pleasure, but you have to read it know why.

RECKONING is the second book in the WILDLIFE series and it is NOT for the squeamish! No spoilers are included in this review.

This weekend, I needed to escape the real world for a while so I decided to reread a couple of my favorite books by Jeff Menapace. I flew through the first WILDLIFE and immediately picked up RECKONING. People always wonder how authors come up with this stuff but more so, it scares me how much we love these messed up stories! If I want to escape real life for a bit, I definitely prefer stories like these that keep me glued to my comfy spot!

In WILDLIFE, we took a trip into the Florida Everglades and met the Roys and their extreme belief of an “eye-for-an-eye” when their family is done wrong…and sometimes, even when they aren’t. The fight for survival in WILDLIFE left someone seeking vengeance and a RECKONING. So when a group intent on making a documentary about the Roys and the horrific events a few years earlier, they are a little too eager to venture into the swamp seeking a good story. Well, they got the story…

Again, I don’t want to give any spoilers but this story brings back a few characters from WILDLIFE and introduces some new ones that will leave a lasting impression on you and thinking about them long after finishing the book!

I have been a die-hard Menapace can since his first series!

Mr. Menapace never fails to entertain the reader! With kick ass action, unbelievable detailed descriptions and gruesome scenes that cause cringeful moments, I cannot put the book aside! And as sickly morbid as some scenes can be, they are well written in a way that isn't too much or cheesy. There is always full-bodied characters that are so realistic to imagine. ( Even if they are complete psychos!) There is never lack of a solid plot, the tales are spot on and memorable beginning to end!
I always have lavishly praised Menapace's work and I believe I will continue to do so if his writing stays on par with what he has done thus far. I loved the fact that he found a sequel out of the first Wildlife. To just imagine - there were the rotten to the core Roy's. A sort of retelling of the Hatfield and McCoy's. Though much more wicked! THEN - come back with Travis Brown up and find out about the REAL ROYS!!! Now I will await the growing up of Darla Roy! C'mon Jeff! I know the story is definately there and ready to be told! Xx

Like "Deliverance" with a modern day twist....

If you're into a bit of the more macabre, graphic novels of King, Blake Crouch, & Jack Ketchum then you'll probably dig this book (and it's predecessor, "Wildlife").....The storyline is well developed, fast paced, and awesomely horrific. You should definitely read "Wildlife" before reading this one in order to have a better understand of many the main characters (for the most part, the background of the family from which all of all the "bad guy" characters in the storyline originate comes from the first book). Equally important, neither book contains the grammatical or editing errors that are so annoyingly common in most independently published books. This is a super entertaining, nightmare inducing read. If you're into that sort of thing (which I definitely am), then I highly recommend)! And I NEVER write reviews, but felt that this indie author deserves to be supported.

Jeff Menapace has something of a gift for writing twisted, dark thrillers that feature the violent and repulsive antics of back country folk. Yet, I can't seem to stop reading them! After being hooked on the Bad Games series, I transitioned to the Wildlife series. Honestly, while a lot of the Bad Games series is about psychological horror, this series is one of gruesome and violence. As an avid fan of the Saw series, this is not a bad thing, but these books are not for the faint of heart.

After the events of the Swamp Massage from Wildlife, all seems well in the world... until we meet the the extended Roy family, who makes the family from the first book seem like downright pacifists. The book amps up the stakes and action, all culminating in a wild climax. If you liked the first one, you'll love this one!

Wildlife is a wild ride

Reading this was an experience to remember, similar to having your innards torn out through your throat but in a good way! The crazy swamp dwelling Roy family are back in this sequel along with their pet alligators, playing games and having fun with people they meet. Love to loath them and each character will creep you out in a different way. Jeff Menapace has a great style of writing and will leave you wanting more but more than anything reminds us that, as another great writer once said, real monsters aren't in your closet or under your bed, the real monsters are human.
No hesitation giving this five stars, that very last paragraph was what truly got the emotions flowing. Thankyou for the excellent work Mr Menapace, looking forward to more!

Hillbilly Fun

Like his other swamp stories, Jeff Menapace, tells a new and equally sick story about the remains of the Roy family. Deep in the Everglades not e can hear you scream and the Roy's love to hear you scream. Reckoning is a little sicker than the original Wildlife and more about the sick pleasure of psychopath s as they torture and kill for the fun of it. Reckoning also throws in some family angst and the continued fight for respect from his family of Travis who caused the trouble to start in Wildlife. Reckoning is a sick and twisted tale you will not want to put down if you have an affinity for torture and crazy families. I liked it will look for more from Jeff Menapace in the future. Sick good time.

OK story but missed the mark

Not nearly as good as the first Wildlife book. Like many sequels, I think Jeff missed what it was we really loved about the story. It wasn't the gore, it was the shock value. It was the good things suddenly going bad and the bad things suddenly going good. The gore just embellished that. In this book the gore is forefront and way too predictable. I didn't feel the same connection with the characters. Not a 'bad' story just not the 'great' story that Wildlife was. Still looking forward to reading more of Jeff's work.

Wow!

Good grief! This 3rd installment of this wild, crazy, scary story is quite the read. As much as it bothers me deeply and has caused me a few nightmares... I just couldn't stop reading it. I am almost ashamed to admit how much I like this whole story line. I will continue to follow the writings of this author even though these stories scare the heck out of me. So many times I think I can't continue reading this storyline and yet i can't stop reading it either. Read this sequel but, count on having nightmares!!!

I really wanted to dislike this book, given the goriness and gut-wrenching descriptions of not just death, but of people so indifferent to violence/ torture/ brutality.

Most of the characters, even those the reader should be rooting for, are not overly likable.

Yet, I could not stop reading it, cringing the whole time.

Possibly the only negative to the plot I could say is that it is strange how the whole storyline is changed in a few pages at the end. One would have expected the final deaths to be played out on a grander scale.

Still a fun, although unsettling read.

DELIVERANCE ON STEROIDS!!! If I had to describe this book in only three words, those would be exact ones I would choose!

I immediately started reading this sequel, as soon as I had finished the first book, and I wondered how it could possibly hold its own against the dark brilliance of the first. Well, let me tell you, not only did it hold its own, but it even surpassed its predecessor! Wildlife: Reckoning took all of the sick, cruel, twisted dementedness of Wildlife and ratcheted it up about a hundred notches.

Menapace has become a master at making my jaw drop and my skin crawl!

What a story

This book and the first I could not put down. I read it at work , doing my job while reading the book, trying to hide behind my computer. It is a great read. I haven't read a great book in a long time.. This is it. I started with the first book Wildlife. I was glued to that one to. Read it in 3 days. This book 2 days. Can't wait till Darla grows up. Excellent read. Kept me on the edge of my seat and shocked as I turned the pages. I couldn't wait to find out what happens next. Thank you.

What a wild ride! Absolutely could not put this book down! The part that is the scariest is that you can’t brush this story aside like most horror stories & reassure yourself it can’t happen in real life. It is too frightening to consider that it could happen to anyone. No trip to the Everglades planned any time soon, ever!

Having read the initial "Wildlife" I was already preconditioned for things to come, so not too much was a surprise to me. I kinda got what I was expecting and while it might help some to read the first story, mainly for character development, it's not absolutely necessary. Definitely a page turner, could be read in one sitting and while it does keep you guessing as to what is going to happen to who next, I liked the first story better mainly for the "shock" value as a horror/thriller read.

I really enjoyed the first book and this one was just as good! There are more members of the Roy family than we were aware of before and they are living up to the Roy name! Some old faces cropped up, and there were a few (gory) surprises along the way! Darla was a very interesting character indeed! And during an online conversation with the author himself he told me she was fun to write - I wonder if she will crop up in a 3rd book with her own scores to settle...? A great read!

Chilling is just too inadequate of a word for this book!

Loved, loved, loved it!! Impossible to put down! Oh my gosh I just loved the Roy family!! I don’t know what that says about me but they were something else!

Side Note: You may not want to eat while reading this book. I found that out the hard way.

GREAT SEQUEL!
I've been waiting on this sequel and Jeff Menapace didn't disappoint.
The psychotic Roy family are sadistic, swamp folk who get off on having Roy nights and six young people paid the price....so did many others. Travis got his revenge and it was oh so sweet.
I am expecting another Roy story 😊
