In 2053, Canada is a matriarchal and cosmopolitan society where people are discriminated on simple things like whether they own a car. Paulo, a melancholic police detective born in Angola and raised in Portugal, has been demoted from corporate crimes investigations to homicide. Ana, Paulo’s captain and lover, can’t even defend him against the authorities with how seriously he screwed up his last case. Daniel lives in Montreal, a city overcrowded with climate refugees. He works under a contract program that uses twisted legal logic to relegitimize slavery. In the pouring rain, he abandons his service contract. Wanted by the federal government under the “threat status protocol” which uses an algorithm to evaluate the risk an individual poses to society, he flees into the northern slums joining a resistance movement. Paulo is assigned Daniel’s case, who has become a suspect in a tobacco dealer’s murder. But Paulo is preoccupied with the coverup that got him demoted. His last case to the World Trade Organization had uncovered mass corruption in the recent sale of the police force to a Chinese corporation. He has to decide where his loyalties lie. In a tango of politics and rage, Paulo and Daniel’s very different lives collide.
Electric Order by Armani Martel will make you look deep into your relationships and take a closer look at those who are the closest to you. It took me awhile to get into this book, the beginning was confusing and seemed to drag on slowly. But I’m glad I stuck with it because it laid the ground work for a really good read. I ended up being pleasant surprised. Martel wrapped murder, betrayal, deception, relationships and gave it all a personal feeling that made it relatable and made me look closely at my own life. When Paulo, a detective experiences betrayal and deception from someone he trusted, it makes him question his life and leads to him making serious changes toward being the person he wanted to be. Overall, this was a good book, I liked the characters and they were easily relatable even if it was hard to get into right away, it was well worth sticking with it.
Deception and betrayal always come from the ones you expected the least, you can expect an enemy or a fiend to back-stab you, but an ally, a brother and a colleague to betray you, that’s unbearable to even think of, but it can still happen. This book presents in a very believable way, a lot of what most of us think, our doubts, questioning our existence in this world, if we have a future, and a lot of that, but the setting it’s what makes this entirely new and fresh, and everything is for the sake of the questions presented before. I love this book, it’s a strange but compelling read, it really makes me questions some things, don’t worry about the future, what lies ahead, even if your purpose comes to you late in life, remember that you are still here for a reason, so for you to find out that, live, survive, fight.
This is a story of what each one of us feels at different points in life. A story of questioning the realm of society and where we actually fit in or belong. Sometimes one wonders if they are even a part of the world as it is. The story of making a connection and growing and developing the experience between people. The characters are developed and have good relatable emotion. The story line is addicting and easy for anyone to see where it can relate to them as well. A good read that any one will enjoy. I recommend this one as as good distraction.
If you are looking for a read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, flipping the page, and second-guessing every character than this one is for you. However, it does take a beat to get there. I do appreciate books that do not have one big event after another and move too fast, but there were some parts in this book that were unreasonably slow, but then when the action came it really bought the mystery.
This book combines a lot of really interesting elements that makes me interested in learning more about the main characters, Paulo and Daniel. Their relationship is intense with a number of elements that make for a worthwhile entertaining summer read.
Unique experience! I am trying to make a connection of the title with the theme of the book. I arrived at the conclusion (my understanding) that things happen suddenly in life, especially betrayal and unexpected experiences just like electric shocks that leaves you moved. Similarly, in the Paulo a detective is betrayed and had an unforgettable, learning experience when he crosses path with Daniel, ruled by a sense of injustice. He is moved and that changes his course of life and he realizes the purpose of his life. The idea is not new but the way author managed to present it is unique.
