The Circus of Storms appears at random, then collapses overnight and disappears without a trace. The performers are never seen unmasked. Even the faces of their dragons are painted secrets.
No new performers, not even top-ranking graduates from the prestigious School of Dragonmanship Arts, can get into the show.
But that can’t stop Novalie Robinson from dreaming.
Novalie is just a pizza place girl, barely getting by on the rough side of the tracks and wishing for wings on every star in the heavens. When the mysterious circus returns to Paikka, she’s determined not to let anything stop her from going.
Until an unwanted dud dragon lands in the path to her ticket, and her dreams take a flying detour. . .
"Wow, things have changed a lot...ha, that's funny...oh, that's rough...aww, that's adorable!...LOLOLOL...hey, I know who that is!...uh-oh...oh no!...HOW COULD THEY?!?!?...OH NO, OH NO, OH NO!!!...*wallows in pools of misery and anger and sadness and outrage*...*finally catches breath*...this is still so sad. And where is [spoiler]? And aren't we ever going to get to see the circus? I don't think I like this book very much...oh! yes--no--yes--no--yes--please be yes?!?...EEEEEEEEEEP! My babies!...LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL...*melts into a puddle of happiness and laughing tears*...whoops, did I say I didn't like this book? I take it all back!"
Good gracious, these books are something else! The humor is priceless, the struggles are authentic and relatable (no small feat when you're dealing with dragons), and the agony is excruciating! I'm not the kind of reader who generally enjoys having my heart ripped out, shredded, and stomped on, and for a while there I thought I wasn't going to like this book as much because of it. But then everything was so beautiful and precious and perfect and hilarious that it was only after I had lain there with a goofy smile on my face for quite some time and re-read my favorite parts over again that I remembered I had thought I wasn't going to like it as much. Ha!
This book started out different than the others, with none of our recurring characters (although I did know where they were, just not why) and a dragon culture that's so different from the way the last book ended that it was hard to wrap my mind around all the changes for a while. But then the way that tied back in at the end...and the things that hadn't changed...and all my beautiful, precious, unspoiled babies... <3<3<3<3<3 And even though I missed them terribly when they weren't there, I did love Novalie and Polaris--and the guys at the pizza place! XD And everything at the end was so beautiful and homelike, even with its bittersweet edges. (Ugh, I would never want to watch that movie either... XP But I would definitely like a movie of these books! Not that it's needed, but it would be so awesome!!!! And yup, I'm rambling again. *closes mouth*)
Do I recommend this book? Absolutely! But not until you've read the other two, because as much as most of it can stand on its own, the best parts of the book are so much better if you know what's come before. <3 Just a note, if you're sensitive about animal abuse, there's quite a bit of it in parts, not in graphic detail, but shown for the horrible reality it is. But if you make it through that, it'll all come out more beautiful than before. Just absolutely lovely! <3
Content--animal abuse and experimentation; people endangered by frightened animals; mentions of injuries, blood, and scars (not graphic); mentions of a character being hurt by a church split, including a brief mention of an affair; a minor character is jokingly referred to as a witch, and there are mentions of her talking about horoscopes, psychics, and auras (this character is only seen once or twice); "magic" used figuratively
