The Dragon's Thief

Rate this book
Chester. Magpie shifter, renowned thief.

Chester knows better than to get involved when a dragon requests his services. Anyone who steals from a dragon's hoard is not to be screwed with. There's something alluring about Michal though, and Chester's always loved playing with fire...

Michal. Dragon shifter, first-born son.

Michal knows exactly who's taken the centrepiece of his hoard—his estranged brother. The one person he can't touch thanks to family politics. It seems simple enough to hire the little magpie shifter to retrieve what is his. But, Chester is nothing like Michal expected, and in the end he might need to decide whether the last piece of his mother is worth more than the man who could own his heart.

This 65 page short story is romantic, sweet and a wonderful read. I totally love Michal and Chester. This is the first time I have read anything with a bird shifter, let alone a magpie. Chester is so well developed and it made such perfect sense that a magpie shifter would find himself as a thief. The ending is totally appropriate for this story and works well. Overall this book was a lot of fun and very entertaining!

Ok so first off...DRAGONS!!!!!!!!!!!! also...can I please have more and did you see that cover...it's AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!...and now for a more complete review...

Before I get into the actual review can I just say…

look at that freakin’ cover…I love it…such a beautiful dragon and I love…LOVE!!! Dragons!

Now on to the actual story…Chester is a renowned thief and Magpie shifter and actually he’s pretty adorable I really liked Chester and he really does know that you don’t mess with a dragon’s hoard…nope, nope, nope that’s just cray, cray. The problem is that when the dragon’s as attractive as Michal…it’s hard to let your common sense rule the day.

Michal is a dragon-shifter and a first-born son and someone has messed with his hoard and not just any someone…nope, nope, nope this is a someone that’s known to Michal and thanks to family politics Michal can’t do a thing about it except hire a sexy little magpie to get what’s his back.

First things first there was really only one thing that bothered me about this story…it was TOO SHORT!!!!!!!!! Not that the story wasn’t complete or that I felt cheated no it was more like I was loving it and Chester and Michal and all the things about this one.

At all of 65 pages packing a complete story that was filled out with depth to the characters and a story that felt complete the author had a big undertaking because this is something that can either work or go horribly wrong if it’s not done right and as my first time reading this author I was pleasantly delighted with the story I got to read.

I loved seeing Michal so confident and sure of his place in the world until he’s faced with the realization that he wants Chester more than he wants the return of what was taken from his hoard and he’s faced with insecurities and Chester as he realizes that Michal’s so much more than a job and I loved Chester and Michal together. These boys were hot, not that there was a lot of sex in this one but what was there was well done and strategically utilized to emphasis the attraction between Michal and Chester.

There were also some secondary characters that we got to meet in this story and while the author gave us enough information to add depth and dimension to things, I would have loved more about Chester’s friends and Michal’s father and brother.

While this story worked for me as it was if it had been a bit longer than the 65 pages on my Kobo, I’m pretty sure there would have been 5 flowers (stars) on this review. Riza Curtis is a new to me author and for a first read I found this story to be absolutely delightful and if the author decides to grace us with more…more Chester and Michal…oh be still my heart! I’m there so totally there.

All I needed to hear was dragon shifter and magpie shifter in one story and BOOM! I was all in! Meet Michal and Chester….

“He was going to regret this –everything about the dragon screamed bad news—but oh, how he loved to play with fire.”

Chester is a thief. What? No judging! He likes shiny things, which is no surprise since he’s a magpie shifter. He’s also the best thief in the business, which is how he gained the attention of Michal—a mysterious dragon shifter. Michal hires Chester for a job and gets so much more. Heat and humor hit the page pretty fast between these two and it is so much fun to watch. There is something about the power of a dragon cuddling up to a small, soft magpie that curls my toes!

This pair is full of trouble, warmth, cuddles, and more! A sweet story that really could have been more. The world and characters are too big to fit in a short story in my opinion. I want more! It has all the magic and mystery and chemistry to grow into a book. Here's hoping!

Cute little novella about a thief and a dragon. I liked it ok. There was no angst, not much chemistry between the characters either but it was entertaining nonetheless. Chester was snarky and sassy and Michal up until I read his POV I could not really say much about him. He is a cross between tough and romantic at heart. After a little wobble they got steady and lived happily ever after. Yes, it was that short. I felt like 10 more pages would have made it even better.

A Joyfully Jay review.

The Dragon’s Thief offers another twist on shifter romances by introducing two characters that like their baubles almost as much as they like one another. The Dragon’s Thief is a novella and does a good job of providing a self-contained story with a fairly established plot, especially given its shorter length. There are times it feels a bit rushed and messy, but this doesn’t affect the entire book. I wouldn’t say the story is particularly original or exciting, but it is perfectly serviceable.

I honestly didn't understand WHY Michal needs to be a dragon and Chester needs to be a magpie shifter -- because seriously, the paranormal world is basically non-existent. This could easily be a millionaire asking an ex-human thief to do the stealing. No need for any of them to be supernatural beings

And I just don't feel the relationship built either *shrugs*

But I do like Chester as a character. That's what helps this one with my so-so 3 stars.

DNF @ 25%.

Second, and last, attempt for this author. She’s very talented at having really interesting concepts and very dull execution.

It’s hard to take Chester seriously as a thief when he gets next to no intel, and just spends a good chunk so far just googling shit.

And who are Kit & Harry? Am I supposed to know these guys, because it sure seems that way.

Chester is a Magpie shifter, drawn to shiny things. When the dragon Michal ask him to steal his bracelet back from his brothers hoard, Chester finds him self saying yes when he'd meant to say no.

Michal decides that to get into his brothers home they need to pretend to be involved. Again, Chester thinks it a bad idea but can't help but say yes.

They spend a lot of time together to get into the part. A lot of sexy time practicing. Chester is caught in the act of stealing the the bracelet. His brother has the right to punish him for stealing from his hoard. What's a dragon to do?

Cute short story. Wherein a dragon finds a man worthy to add to his hoard.

The Dragon’s Thief was an entertaining short story, with my one wish that it would have been longer. To be fair though, I say that about almost every short story I read. In this case, I wanted more time with the main characters to get to know them better—they piqued my interest enough that I wanted to know more.

I love stories with dragon shifters, so I was immediately drawn to Michal. His aloof attitude at the beginning fit well with a dragon personality, and I liked seeing how as the story progressed he became protective of Chester, particularly near the end of the story in his dragon form. Chester was a fun character, I liked how he was determined to appear strong and brave even when he was in situations where that wasn’t the case.

At around 65 pages or so, this story is a pretty quick read. Even so, it still does give the reader a full story, though I think it would benefits from some more fleshing out to get more interaction between the characters and some more relationship development. Once Chester and Michal are together, their chemistry is obvious, and they are pretty hot together. There is some adult language and sexual content, so this one’s for readers 18+.

I received a copy to read and review for Wicked Reads

I was really excited to read this story even though it's really short because of the blurb and dragons. Honestly nothing about this book worked for me. The book is only 65 pages and there were so many pages that didn't have dialogue. How can I connect to Chester and Michal with no dialogue? I couldn't. Michal hires Chester to steal a sentimental item. So much goes into getting to that part and then what happens when Chester does steal it I felt let down. I couldn't connect to any of the characters. When Michal shifts into his dragon in the house to show Chester and then he could still talk to Chester I lost all interest. I am sure many will enjoy this short story it just wasn't for me sadly.

Something shiny

What starts as a job ends as so much more! Chester is a magpie shifter and a first rate thief for hire- to the right people. Normally a dragon shifter would be the wrong people, but the job Michal hires Chester for intrigues him. When the best cover to get in is to pretend to be boyfriends something more develops, and that very relationship saves them both.

This is a very fast love story but it worked in the context given. Michal doesn't have interest in Chester when he first meets him, it is after Chester proves himself and beyond. Chester is attracted to Michal, but in the way one is attracted to fire. After Chester not only does the job but shows Michal up, Michal sets out to have Chester, and this progression feels natural. Equally, while Chester knows liking a dragon can be asking for trouble, he can't help but respond back to the expressed interest. When it becomes clear that they mean very well together everything about the romance feels right.

I enjoyed that the romance was not the only focus of the story. The job Michal needs done involved family and old grudges. As Chester becomes involved these old hurts come to light and it brings up another side to things. I loved the exploration if family relationships and the way that everything came around in the end. Very good short!

Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.

A magpie is hired to steal from a dragon's hoard. What could possibly go wrong??

Short! So very VERY short! That's my overwhelming thought on finishing this book, I wish it were longer.

It's told mostly from Chester, the magpie's point of view, but Michal, the dragon who hires Chester, gets some say, just not enough for my liking!

It's not overly complicated, nor is it explicit nor violent. It's well told, and well delivered. Some more could have been made of the feud between Michal and his brother James.

It was just too bloody short!

BUT!!!

I DID enjoy it, spending an hour sitting out in the sun on my day off. It's the first I've read of this author, but now she is firmly on my radar, my wish list is a little longer and hopefully I'll be able to read more soon.

Because I LIKED the way she tells her tales, and I LIKED that we get a magpie shifter, because I have never read a magpie shifter! And ya'll know I love them different!

So, because I found it too short ( I did NOT know it was a short going in!) and because I wanted more Michal...

4 shiny stars (because magpies love shiny things!)

I read this sweet shifter story in one sitting. I loved the characters, especially Chester whose mouth tends to engage, then his brain catches up later. One of the delights of this story is the banter, and not just between Chester and Michal. I liked that Michal starts out as an icy somewhat grumpy dragon, and then thaws as he gets to know Chester. I also liked that Chester, although attracted to Michal, doesn’t trust him at first, and watches his own back. This is a story very much about family, as we meet Chester’s adoptive parents as well as Michal’s brother and father.

The world building is interesting, especially as it’s a world with shifters but although humans share it, they’re unaware of the true nature of many of its inhabitants. The UK setting was a plus for me too, as I enjoy stories that take place there and use British expressions. I found the ending satisfying with its touch of bittersweet in regard to Michal’s brother, and would like to read more about these characters and the world they inhabit.

I’d recommend The Dragon’s Thief to readers who enjoy a short, sweet shifter story with delightful banter, and interesting world building.

I really waffled with the review for this one. I really liked the premise of the story. The characters are great and the story had an overall warm feel to it. Normally I would have really liked a story that had shifters and all. I did like it but not as much as I had hoped. I think it was a bit of a let down. The story had a good beginning and the concept was solid but the story itself was a bit lacking. I really felt with more depth and bit more drama this could have become a great story. Instead we see little glints of it. The shifter element which could pull in lots of readers isn't there much. It is very lightly done. The premise is too easily and lightly solved. There is an attempt to give background to deepen the story but it is left a little too awkwardly hanging out there, leaving me wondering why even bring in this element. So many potentials left out there that are wasted. Yes, I enjoyed the story but so disappointing in the end.

While the romance in this short book is secondary, I enjoyed getting to know both Chester and Michal at the tail end of this story. The book centers around Chester, who is a magpie shifter and also a thief, who is hired by Michal to steal a painting. The life of Chester is told as you follow him as he meets Michal, does his research on the job he's hired to do, and you meet secondary characters in his life which makes Chester a more sympathetic character than you first thought.

I enjoyed the relationship between Michal and Chester once Chester confronts Michal about the real job he wants Chester to take on. I think the two are great together, both of them funny and completely taken by the other as they get to know each other. It's a sweet, short read and it would be great to see if the author would write a follow-up, concentrating on their relationship.

No chemistry between the characters at all. No depth to either of them. Michal, the dragon, in particular seems like a cardboard cutout to stand in place of a character.
Judging by the painting episode, Chester is not a professional thief he claims to be, more like all he’s got is fool’s luck. No plans when going in to do the job; the impression is that he just wings it 99% of the time.
And then there is instalove, and not the best kind either: instalust with a benefit of a stable life in a mansion on Chester’s part and “want him in my hoard” on Michal’s, though for what reason is beyond me.
I am willing to finish this …umm, story, but only because it’s short. Will report back when done.
And there is nothing extra to report.

1 star + half a star for the resolution, or the idea of it anyway.

My first book by this author and I really liked this story. It was engaging from the start and continued being so to the end. Michal and Chester's relationship was fun and I liked what build up was there. Michal's family seemed like wonderful characters and I liked how everything turned out with the bracelet and Michal's family.

Good, but it could have so easily been great

I really liked both Michal and Chester and even James and Jonathan. This book started our very captivating and it drew me in almost immediately, but it ended too quickly and too conveniently to be fully enjoyable. Basically I think that this had real potential that never quite got realized.

Long winded

Was a book too full of description. Went into way too many descriptive details. But if it didn’t there would have been no book because it was a short story to begin with. Was a good story, just not developed enough.

A perfect slow-building romance between a dragon and a magpie. It starts out as a business relationship, but develops into something more.
Typo: ‘fit’ is both past and present. ‘Fitted’ means something entirely different and is not the past tense of fit.

A Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words Review An Alisa Review:

Rating: 4 stars out of 5

This was a nice story. Michal wants the piece of his hoard back but it becomes less and less important as he starts to get to know Chester. Chester wants to get Michal his piece back but ends up giving Michal so much more.

Chester has never really had any close connections to people and the two he is closest to he hardly ever sees and they have a parental connection. Getting mixed up with Michal throws him for a loop but I loved watching him see that there is a chance for him to be happy. I really like seeing Michal find something more important that his hoard, which is a common problem with dragons. The story wasn’t very deep but I thought it was really enjoyable.

The cover art by Riza Curtis is great, I love it.

3-3.5*

I loved the beginning of this story. It was very dark and dangerous.

Young guy walking the alley gets stalked by someone (thing) else and pulls out his trust knives. Only the thing stalking him can't be taken down so easily.

The blurb for this book really intrigued me. I've never read of a magpie shifter and Chester didn't disappoint. He's a cheeky little retriever (not a thief, mind you) who likes shiny things. The items he retrieves are items that were taken from their original owners.

The dark broody man in the shadows, Michal, is a dragon shifter who is in need of a retrieval. So he corners the young magpie, but is quite taken aback with what he finds in the man.

Their back and forth banter is great. The chemistry is definitely there. Chester has some draw acks, because he doesn't want to flirt with a client, but Michal ends up being so much more.

I will say the relationship unfurled pretty quickly, but mostly organically (aside from the relationship ruse). Michal quickly goes from dark and broody to smoldering and flirty, then to unsure and nervous and finally protective and loving. What Chester was hired for quickly becomes "not" a job and more of a mending tool between brothers.
I am pretty sure my favorite character is Jonathan, Michael's dad. He's just a jovial dragon who wants to see his sons get along.

I would have loved to have seen this as a longer story. With more meat and bones, but for the length it is, it is a good story. If you're looking for a quick shifter story about a thief and a dragon and don't mind what feels like a little insta-love (but not in a bad way), then this is the perfect little story for you.
