Even while Rich Mallette is in prison, he’s still calling the shots. Brett Jacobs may have taken out a dozen of his men, but he’s not ready to throw in the towel just yet. He’s still got a few things up his sleeve for the former detective, one of which is another heinous act aimed to destroy what’s left of Jacobs’ soul.

While Jacobs battles more of Mallette’s Maulers, he also learns the identity of the second man who was with Frazier when his family was killed. As he searches for the killer, he finds and takes in a dog named Gunner, who he starts training to be by his side throughout the ordeal. All of which will culminate in Jacobs and Mallette finally meeting face to face for the first time since Mallette ordered the hit on Jacobs’ family.

Second book in The Eliminator series. After killing most of Mallette's gang, the imprisoned leader sends his lawyer to hire a hitman from New York. The hitman kills The Eliminator's father, and things ratchet up even more.

Pretty good for what it is.

This is a really good series. I enjoy this character as much as the Silencer and while their origins and what drives them are slightly different, they fulfill the same goal of ridding their cities of criminal scum who harm the innocent-- By any means necessary! In the Eliminator's case, he was born of tragedy by the very criminal element he was sworn to protect the innocent as a brilliant detective which includes his family. While the Eliminator has been hard hitting at getting his revenge and finished the killers responsible for murdering his family, he feels the war is far from over. That won't come until it's down to the very last two people-- The Eliminator and Malette. A new threat came into town who was hired my Malette to track down and eliminate the Eliminator as retribution for decimating a number of his crew. Will the Eliminator survive or has he finally met his match with a deadly and inevitable showdown that comes to a head? It's something you'll have to read to find out. This was an intense novel filled with mystery and intrigue sprinkled with the right degree of intensity and action. If you like the Silencer, you'll like this series as well. Highly recommended.

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The Payback is the second book in the Eliminator series. This book shows the reaction of the actions in the first book. Brett Jacobs has eliminated a large number of Rich Mallette’s gang. However, Mallette is not out and takes matters in his own hands. He hires a hitman from New York to deal some retribution to Jacobs and his family.

Many of Jacob’s allies from the first book are back. Eddie is still helping Jacobs. There is one scene where Eddie talks his way out of a confrontation with the hitman that allows him to shine. Hack helps Jacobs setup a hit against more of Mallette’s gang using his hacking skills. A new ally is found in the form of a puppy that Jacobs adopts and begins training to be an attack dog.

The best part of this book is more character building for Mallette. We are told that he is this great mastermind in the first book. Now we see him in action. He controls his empire and makes decisions through his corrupt and weak lawyer. Mallette doesn’t have many resources and yet is able to put Jacobs on the defensive. This makes him an almost untouchable villain as he can still call the shots from his jail cell and Jacobs has no way to get him. Eventually, Mallette and Jacobs will have a final confrontation, but that will probably come in a later book.

This is the second part of a series and does a good job of building upon the first book. It continues the story of the first one and puts the characters in some greater peril. It ends somewhat conclusively with the hitman story, but Mallette will still be causing trouble from his jail cell. At the end of the book there is a tense scene where Jacobs and Mallette face each other, which pretty much promises that their personal war will continue. I enjoyed this second outing for the series and will continue reading more.

I tried to like Payback because I had enjoyed the first book so much, but some of the nagging sloppy details that would surely get Jacobs caught in the first book became even more profound in this second book in the series. I figured maybe the details were just not included by the author re: wiping away fingerprints, etc., but that surely Jacobs was doing those things. But then he took the puppy from the car of one of his victims and kept it as his own! How dumb! Talk about tying someone to the crime scene and the victim! And why would his father open the door to someone he didn’t know since his father KNEW that his son was seeking revenge of those who killed his family? And Buchanan (cop) tells Jacobs’ brother that the brother’s family is probably safe. Bah hah hah! In what world would that be a seasoned cop’s first response. This is where I gave up the book.

Another good read

Keep up the good writing. I hope you can give Jacobs some new happiness in the future. I know he is just a character but I could feel the grief as read. If course I know how it feels because I lost my husband in death. To lose children has to be even more heartbreaking. Maybe you could give him more children? Just a thought. Keep up the good writing!!!

The Payback

A good detective that his hold world was taken away from him by ruthless man who had his family murder. His struggle for closure comes in his revenge of taking down the gang, sad as he realizes that doesn't ease the pain he faces every day.

Ryan delivers another great story

I am a long time fan of this author. The Jacobs character a traditional anti hero with a twist that the reader will discover early on and the ending let's you know this story continues in the next book.
