What I learned from this book is that the author wants you to come up to him at a party, offer to buy him a drink - a White Russian, and while he is drinking the drink you bought he wants you to tell him that you are a big fan and want to do a video testimonial for him. If you buy a coaching session from him you will be his friend too.
The author does have few things anyone thinking about starting a business should think about. The useful information in this book would make a great pamphlet. It didn't seem to have any actual strategy. If you can get this book for free, without stealing it (the only way the author thinks you can get his book for free), then go ahead and read it but don't waste your money.
This book is basically a platform for the author to direct more traffic to his blog. Half way through the book it becomes completely obvious that he is solely attempting to hit a word count, and clearly forgets the overall topic of the book. Disappointing and filled with simple grammatical/spelling errors.
I made it 1/3 the way through but couldn't take any more. The author is so full of himself and how amazing he is. Of the part I read, I took away nothing. Skip this one.
Well, this was one weird book. It started out as promising and exciting, and I must admit that it filled me with motivation to start investing even more time in my current digital endeavor. However, that somehow went downhill in the end of the first section of the book, and in the end, I was showered with minimalism principles, travel tips and the cost of living on an Island (wait, what?). Out of the full book, I must say that only 30% or so were helpful, practical tips. The structure was off, like I was reading a compilation of blog posts, most of them repetitive and featuring the same line of thought without much innovation. The chapters were small and mostly had nothing to do with the chapter that came before or after them.
I do not regret the read, as I have learned a couple of powerful tips about word processing, routines, and tricks to improve my current business, but it could be shortened in 100 pages and still maintain its value.
This guy is truly a douche and a con man. This book reads like several blog posts and is way to long for the lack of content it offers. I am about a 1/5th of the way in and I have learned nothing except about how great he is and how to suck up to him and people like him by buying him drinks and talking about hobbies HE likes. I mean, seriously? I dont mind people bragging about their success when they have something to show for it and add value to your life, but this guy adds nothing! After about 80 pages in I cannot take this book seriously anymore. I think he is just having a laugh at the reader or he is so full of himself that he actually believes his writing is interesting. I am glad I found this book for free online! I will try to finish it to give a completely fair review at the end.
I really enjoyed Green's book, Breaking Orbit, which dealt specifically with writing and publishing. He referred to this book a lot, so I thought I'd check it out. It's got lots of inspiring information, but it's really broad for what I'm looking for.
He also goes in a bit of a tirade about some things and paints a pretty broad picture. I don't fault him for his passion; it's what he experienced and some of his bitterness still shows. I haven't had all those same experiences, and I do find use for many educational pursuits that Green does not. Different strokes for different folks.
I appreciate much of this book's content and guidance, but there is a manner in which it is expounded that is off-putting. The single-letter word "I" is used so frequently that you begin to feel like you're just listening to a braggart - nobody likes that; it becomes tiresome. That aside, the book provides some motivational anecdotes and examples that I will use as inspiration as I resign from my current employer and take the first step to Serving No Master. I will likely read it - or at least sections - again.
Prior to picking up this book I had never heard of the author Jonathan Green and what he is about, but if you are interested this book will definitely make up for that. The topic "Serve No Master: How to Escape the 9-5, Start Up an Online Business, Fire Your Boss" is one that has been covered before in other books, most notably in Tim Feriss' "The 4-Hour Workweek", but I'm always willing to read a book about somebody who has succeeded in a field where I'm meddling a bit myself. The book consists of countless short chapters, many 1-2 pages, most of them seeming like a brainstorm of what the author wanted to get out of his system. After having made it through the first fifth of the book, I very nearly put it down for good because it seemed like a lot of rambling and very little that would interest me. It looked like one of those books that were created fast to be distributed and consumed equally fast as a door opener to sell product by an internet marketer. However, I'm happy that I didn't completely give up on the book because as it progresses it becomes a lot more helpful and considerably more interesting, not to the level of delivering mind-blowing revelations, but it caused me to sit and think things through. Consider my options, next steps to take in my business ventures etc. When a book does that to you, it is not a waste of your time, in fact quite the opposite. Having finished the book, I compared my notes with those on various web-retailers, and I must admit that most of those that left those reviews definitely have been drinking the author's Kool Aid. I haven't, but I haven't regretted picking up the book. [An ARC of this book for the purposes of this review was generously provided by the publisher through Netgalley].
Book Review:The title and subtitle are geared to get you to make an immediate purchase. It plays on the fantasy of being able to break free from being a corporate wage slave, to push you to be your own boss, and pursue your dreams. Jonathan Green provides plenty of back-stories, as well as tips to succeed in entrepreneurship. I do think some of the information in this text was repetitive. I also believe that this text would have benefited from being shorter and to the point.
Freebies given within this text to aid readers are a plus to assist them in their journey to become pioneers. However, after purchasing this book, I could not help but feel that it was overpriced. Personal effort and willpower were exerted to get through this publication, due to the length of it, and the reiteration. This volume can be considered the author's 'magnum opus', which most likely propelled him into writing other books.
Book Review Conclusion: Do I recommend this book to other people? Yes. Should you buy it at the currently priced of $7.99? No.
The best course of action would be to read it for free through Kindle Unlimited.
I do not endorse this book as a trophy to place on your bookshelf, but it does warrant your attention at least once in your lifetime. I do urge you to read this book as soon as possible, but it's ok to chapter-hop if you are only looking for specific information. It has the potential to persuade you to change your life for the better!
When I bought this book, it was priced at $9.99. Therefore, I do want to praise Jonathan Green for recognizing that his work was overpriced. Nevertheless, in my opinion, the current price for his book is still too high.
Serve no master is a provocative book that sets out to challenge your preconceptions about how success is measured and how it is achieved. It is packed full of insights, anecdotes and personal experience to help the reader face up to what is required of themselves to succeed by their own endeavours.
If you’re looking for a set formula, or step by step plan to success, this is not it. If you want someone to tell you what to do you’re still trapped in the service of the system. If, on the other hand, you want to live your own life on your own terms, but are struggling with courage, motivation or confidence, then Jonathan Green can show you the way.
In this book, Jonathan shows you how to find your own way to success by challenging what you believe about the world of business, making money, and your own capabilities. He takes the reader down the path of self illumination and shows them what it takes on personal, emotional and mindful levels to become the master of their own destiny.
Jonathan Green has a charming and humorous style that is a pleasure to read, a few typos are the only reason for dropping a star in the rating. If not for them this book would have gained a five star rating from me.
The book enlightened me a lot of things. It's not a how-to book, it is the NLP book. I cannot put the book down because of the emotions from the book and I can taste it that recalled my memory in the past. It has more than 400 pages as a good length book and its worth. The book said everything in strong confident voice and the author can prove it in the reasonable result and real. It's real and painful which you will entity entity some time in your life. It needs to be changed. The book is the present for write "show don't tell". The book format is beautiful as well.
This book is full of excellent information and better yet, it makes that information very accessible and easy to read. It also acknowledged that some of the things it talks about can be scary, but at the same time helps the reader reframe their thinking.
I have read some of the other reviews on this site, saying that they haven’t learn anything from the beginning of the book. The author does starts out in a quite forthcoming way, but I do believe that many of these people only read the start.
The author changes the energy of the book towards the mid of it. After setting up expectations and stirring up some interest and maybe even some provocative thoughts, the book then evolves into tangible facts, and you will also see a different side of the author. I like the way he lets us in to his personal life in the latter half of the book.
In the end you will have a very complex image of the possibilities of earning money online, just like you would expect from the book. For example, I want to write, but where am I going to start? When the author mentioned that he still has many blog posts saved on his blog that is not yet posted, I got started. I bought a domain name and started writing. Till now, I haven’t posted anything yet, but I have started.
Some chapters into the book you also get a very diverse picture of the author, which to me creates credibility.
In the beginning I wasn’t too excited either, but trust me, it was worth continuing! I am left with a lot of ideas and inspiration to where I want to start, and full of knowledge and tips that I can use on my way, so the chances of failing are much smaller!
Although I do enjoy a good success story, I appreciate it more when the person writing shares how to do it. This book was a lot about mindset and the practical application of the tools he used to create his own success and freedom, explained in detail and with a very practical voice. Jonathan details his own failures and successes, and manages to also deal with some pretty destructive assumptions most of us have, without even realizing it. He is able to do this because he has viewed his own experience with a critical eye, and learned how to construct the world he wants to live in. Starting from the bottom, he looks at assumptions about education and what we believe it means to have success. He invites us to also examine each of these, then develop our own definitions. And he then shows how our new world view can actually be implemented. Yes, I am a fan - I like seeing other people succeed, but I enjoy it even more when they can share how they did it. And, to be honest, he also gives away a lot of free stuff for reading the book, including one little trick to quickly earn back the sale price. Very cool. It definitely opened my eyes to possibilities for hope in my own life, and helped me realize there is a very real chance I can actually do it.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Jonathan Green's definitely struck a nerve with me and I've already taken action to throw off my master's chains. His easy to understand explanations and motivational words have me moving again. I'm no longer willing to be a victim.
Does that mean I'm going into the office tomorrow to spit in my boss's eye and hand him a resignation letter? No, not even close...but the next time I get the slightest hint of condescension from him, I've got the power to inwardly smile knowing I have an escape plan in the works. Every day my tunnel will be closer to the wall I can squeeze under.
This book is only a start...and as Jonathan warns, it's only part of the system. The rest of the information resides in his mega blog site and podcast series. Yes, I've begun to explore those as well, but it's action that will make the difference. I've registered three domain names, configured the bare bones of three WordPress blog sites, and am more excited about a future of serving no master than ever before.
Not good. I could not get past the first several chapters. The author comes off very egotistical. And very boastful of his own accomplishments. He completely disses our education system. Basically insinuates that education is completely worthless and useless, and that the only thing that really matters is making money at any expense. Just a lot of fluff to fill pages. It's hard to believe this book is 444 pages. It could be condensed to less than half of that. The first third of the book is filled with useless information. He does not get to the point at all. And according to some other reviews; never does really get to the point. There just seems to be promise after promise in each chapter of eventually getting to the meat of the book. But it never seems to get there. The author seems very intent on putting down our education system. I'm glad I got this book free. Even at that, it wasn't worth the time it took to read part of it. Do not recommend.
... From highschool who you thought would couch-surf through life but it turns out he found a niche that he enjoys and made a life for himself. Now, over beers, he's telling you how he did it even though you don't remember asking. Half way through you swear he's about to sell you something or convince you to join his "down line," but he doesn't. He just tells you (again) how he drinks for free at conferences when people find out who he's friends with and you start to wonder how many beers the two of you have had tonight. You look at your watch and amidst him giving another description of how he "lives just meters away from the water" you realize it's 0348 in the morning. You can't decide if this guy is the same guy from highschool or just another bar crawler desperately trying to connect... But either way, you can't wait for the next time you two get to hang out. Not a bad read.
I go into books like this one with caution which is why I always read a sample first if its available. I got halfway through the sample and knew I needed to read the whole book so I purchased it and read it between calls at my cube job. It kept me motivated and helped me to see my job in a different mindset. Being part of a corporation steals my soul a bit at a time. Dramatic? Of course but also truly how I feel. I read books like this one for an escape route. I found it! I now have an exit strategy. This book helped me to see that it does take time to build the life and work you really want. I have my 3 money goals and my pyrimad written down. I have my plan. I have already started to take action. Read the WHOLE book, you will not be sorry. I am ready to serve myself. Who will you serve?
This book has the potential to change your life. And not in the way you would expect from a motivational business book. The advice that he gives on networking has already started changing my life, and I have only been implementing it for 3 days.
On the business and motivational side this is a great book. Jonathan keeps bringing it back to the most important point, that it is all about attitude. He is correct when he says that you can always learn skills, but no one can teach you the right attitude to succeed. He gives you sound business advice and he shows you that it is possible through stories from his own and other people's lives.
I had a copy of his free book, Fire Your Boss, but this is way better.

How do you make a living online? Many people do it, and the rest of us are confused. I've read many foolproof guides and books about how the author make a killing, but none of them was actionable for my particular situation.
SERVE NO MASTER isn't a guide, per se. It's full of helpful advice and tons of inspiration. If you're looking for a step-by-step guide to show you how to make money, this isn't it. Instead, this book teaches you how to succeed by overcoming obstacles that you create.
The author is full of advice. He points to articles and blogs that he writes, as well as podcasts. Whether you want to blog, write stories, or make videos, Jonathan Green inspires you.
I found a lot of helpful advice in this book. Some of it is usable right now; some of it is for the long run. Before you spend money on courses and other books, read this book.
I've seen positives and negatives in the reviews - this book is a strong call to action with good justification, and solid structure and ideas on how to get started. The supporting materials online give much more detailed and specific steps - so do not expect to develop much more than some concrete goals and good h a bits from the book. Jonathan offers the rest of the value through his website.
He also lives up to the claim of using and responding via his own email address. Well worth the time to read, especially if you've procrastinated about getting started on your own projects. Jonathan will remind you of the reasons you wanted to do so, and give you a ton of new reasons!
"Serve No Master" promises to be a guide on how to escape the 9-5 grind and start an online business as a digital nomad, but unfortunately, it fell short of my expectations. I picked up this book as my first step toward learning how to build a location-independent career, but it contributed very little to my understanding. The content felt repetitive, with generic advice that lacked depth or actionable insights. While it may be helpful for someone with absolutely no prior knowledge, it didn’t offer much for anyone looking for practical, detailed strategies. A rather mediocre read.
I decided to create my own content around this theme (In Danish) to anyone interested in actual free education: find it here
I have mixed feelings about this week. The author promises to teach you how to start up an online business to escape your 9-5 and become a digital nomad. But it never quite delivers. In the latter part of the book, it gives you some ideas, but they're all very generic. If you're expecting a how-to guide, this'll massively disappoint you.
So what is this book about? Green shares with you his philosophy about life and business. He makes a good argument about why you shouldn't go to college and drop out of corporate America to start your own business and move on a tropical island. If you need a pep talk and motivation to get started on this new journey, you'll enjoy this book.
The main thing I've learned? Network, network, network. It's the secret to the author's success - and yours.
While the author has a persuasive energy to him, his self aggrandisement is unrelenting - sure it's his book to write in as he pleases but Jonathan is constantly on the hard sell with himself as the product. The frequency he mentions the fact he now lives on a Pacific island would make for an interesting drinking game. I get why he is doing this ("You too could one day.."), but I would be lying if I didn't notice a hint of snake oil in the patter. Some of the advice is solid, some less so (suggesting people to enter saturated markets like "Instagram influencer" or "podcaster" or "YouTube movie maker" seems to be negligent and starry-eyed at bear in terms of business advice).
I only took a glance so far. It is divided into small chunks, which make it easily readable. It first starts with what is holding us back in our mind, and about manifesting our dearest dream. Then it goes along with why we should escape the 9 to 5, (we all know that already, so it's a bit long and repetitive), and finally he gives his experience with the different business he made so far, and what he learned along the way. It's not technical, and it doesn't dive into deep details, but I think it's worth a read.
I had a high expectation for this book and hoping this can be as good as $100 startup or 4 hours workweek. Apparently it isn't as good as those. As many other reviewers said, the author is full of himself and promoting his blog link too much. The book is divided into many very short chapters and sections. But I don't see coherence connecting those chapters and sections. It is more like detached blog post. There is also no really actionable items that reader can really immediately do.
I am a person who usually starts a book and doesn't finish it all the way to the end. However, this book was different. I finished it in less than a week and have learned a lot from it. Not only did I take away a lot of valuable information but I reached out to Jonathon. When he says in his book that you can email him and he will respond, he means it. I look forward to reading more of his work and finally focusing on ONE THING at a time to get my own online business up and running!
