BEASTS FROM THE EAST! Putin the satire back into comics, Judge Dredd: Cold Wars takes the headlines of today as projects them on the cop of the future.
A resurgent Russian state interferes with a weakened Mega-City One as hi-tech operatives undermine the law and the Judges fight amongst themselves. Judge Dredd endures an odyssey into darkest Russia in this timely and politically-incendiary latest adventure! Throw back the Vodka and toast the corruption in this critically acclaimed brand-new collection!
Featuring stories from Michael Carroll, Rob Williams and John Wagner with stunning art from Trevor Hairsine, Dan Cornwell, Paul Davidson and Colin MacNeil.
Not on a par with the very best of the recent Dredd stuff, like Day of Chaos or Trifecta – but even when the rest of the weekly prog is languishing, as has been the case rather too often of late (dear heavens, can we please be rid of Skip Tracer already?), you can always rely on Joe for at least moderate thrill-power.
Here we are given several stories linking Dredd with Russia (or Sov) territory. We follow Dredd from punitive expedition to the ultra secret Sov prison (in my opinion best story in collection, both artistically and story-wise), effects on the soul of people that took part in wiping out entire Sov mega city to assisting Sov Judges in the remote parts of SIberia only to get haunted by the ghosts of the past.
Art is mixed here. First story was a best one to me, story of the Apocalypse team was more toony in a bloody and gory way (AD2000 trademark), while story of Mega City One's assistance to Sov's remote outpost is more of a sketchy approach, long, pointy characters, dark and shady, rather monochrome panels. In overall pretty solid art.
Recommended to all fans of Judge Dredd and his universe.
This is an arc of stories featuring Judge Dredd. This takes place in Siberia with the SOV army. The soviets left over from the great war. This was a great story and was very well planned. I didn't think he would get out of the Gulag but Judge Dredd finds a way. I enjoyed the story arc and it was different from the Mega City one arc.
3.5 stars. Dredd is in East Meg 2 in a variety of stories. Apocalypse War callbacks are aplenty, even moreso than usual, with the thread Wagner's been dangling for years. Enjoyable modern Dredd fare, like almost anything 2000ad has put out in the past 2 decades. Great cover by all-time Dredd artist, Jim Murray.
