Imagine waking to a world where every last human has been mysteriously turned to stone...
One fateful day, all of humanity turned to stone. Many millennia later, Taiju frees himself from the petrification and finds himself surrounded by statues. The situation looks grim—until he runs into his science-loving friend Senku! Together they plan to restart civilization with the power of science!
Upon arriving at Kohaku’s village, Senku schemes to make allies out of the villagers. First up is Chrome, whom Senku wins over after beating him in a scientific battle of wits. Their first big task? Concocting a panacea to cure Kohaku’s older sister, Ruri.

Oof I loved this one! We see Seku rescue Kohaku and then going to her village and after a battle with another science user, Chrome he kinda takes over his collections and its kinda funny and I love the humor there and then how they use it to make some crazy inventions to get villagers to their side be it gold spears to ramen food or even making crazy magnets and then electric bulbs, its just crazy and I love how the mangakas take these crazy concept and try to highlight optimism in this pessimistic world and I love the character work here too rom their crazy expressions to downright shock when they see senku and what he can do, its crazy good and makes for an epic read plus I love the ending and a massive new character and it seems like things will get more interesting as the kingdom of science is being built!
Dr. Stone decides to focus only on Senku and his new adventure in a new village.
After meeting a bunch of new characters we get to see that Senku isn't the ONLY one with a scientific mind. However, what's great is most of the new characters we meet are from the new age, so their awe and amazement with Senku building new things is really charming and fun. This is Senku trying his best to build a new civilization, and damn it, after this volume I believe he could do it.
I really did enjoy this volume. While I feel some of the plot is a bit delayed here, atleast for the other characters, it's nice to learn so much in a single volume. It's like I'm in science class but with a lot of great characters. I loved the ending too and this can lead to some big things. I wonder if there will be a war of sorts.
We see some interesting scientific playing here with Chrome and how he is seen as a wizard, as well as meeting Gen who is a kind of con artist from our time. I feel like the plot of helping Ruri gets sidelined kinda quickly gping to electricity and magnets instead. This is a fun manga with the passion for science and how quickly the advancements are made, but it definitely has its Shonen super exaggerated moments and the catch phrases still grate for me at times. Overall, I am liking it despite these gripes.
Kohaku and Senku take the warm spring water back to Kohaku’s sister, and it turns out she lives in an entire village of around 40 adults! The guards bar Senku from entering - no outsiders are allowed, rules are rules. But Kohaku’s sister, Ruri, might know some things about the time before stone! Senku meets Chrome, another science-minded person, and he wins him over in a battle of wits. This gives Senku access to all of Chrome's vast stores of elemental supplies. Senku is determined to win over the villagers and enlists some of them in making antibiotics to cure Ruri’s sickness. That way, they’re sure to let him in the village and he can figure out how she knows so much.
There are a lot more scientific reactions in this volume as Senku has to go through so much to make antibiotics in this stone age. This volume is slightly frustrating with all of its fetch quests. Senku draws out this map to get to the making of penicillin through sulfonamides, rather than through living organisms, so achieving all the steps in this chart is going to take a while. It's highly unlikely he will get through all of this before Tsukasa finds him, but hopefully Senku's new friends will help with battling the extra-strong Tsukasa. Also, Senku banking on the assumption that an antibiotic is what’s going to help Ruri when he hasn't been allowed to examine her. This entire thing might be a waste if it doesn't help her, but the "magic" of needing to move a plot along has me inclined to Senku's guess panning out for him after all of this.
The art emphasizes the outrageous in this volume. Chrome's facial expressions are over-exaggerated. Eyeballs are often popping out like Looney Tunes cartoons.
Overall, this series is still a fun and different manga series than the rest of the field. It's one of the only ones that has science as the crux of its storytelling, and the art is very unique.
What's "gravity"?! The force of attraction between masses... What's "mass"?! There's inertial mass and gravitational mass... What's "inertial"?! Gahhh! Just google it. What's "google"?!
During all this, Senku is almost dying because of how many questions he has to answer haha, his facial and body expressions were gold.
But imagine not being able to say: "Just google it, dude". The PAIN!!!!
Another good volume! Again all of the character expressions in this one were a real highlight, especially a lot of Kohaku’s expressions surprisingly got me (like the ones were she’s insulted). Love how Gen’s just some loser creep. Not much else to say but it good
I love how driven Senku is 💪 It’s like he can do anything, with trial and error, and scientific knowledge humans can overcome so many obstacles. There is also a lot of hope and courage to pursue this, which is something I admire 💪❤️

We are introduced to a bunch of new characters when Kohaku takes Senku to the outskirts of the village. One of those characters is a boy named Chrome who is into science. The conversation between him and Senku is brilliant. There are many comedic elements and they don't feel exaggerated or overused in my opinion. In this volume, we also meet Asagiri Gen, a trickster type character and he is definitely one of my favorite characters in the whole series. The science stuff and explanation is pretty heavy at first but you get used to it. It is funny but I learned a lot of things from Senku throughout the series.
My favorite character shows up in this volume! At last. (Knowing how late in the series other characters show up, I really shouldn’t complain, hah.) All around fun happens here. The interaction with Senku and one of the gem sisters about the iron forge really got me.

Catching up on my backlog now... gotta admit that it's weird re-reading and seeing everything that was planted from the beginning, including the 100 Tales and that Suika was always self-conscious about not being useful (despite being basically a child and, of course, of limited experience), and Chrome had always had a crush on Ruri so his line in a (much!) later volume about is a bit poignant, remembering where it was they started.
This is also the start of the foxtail millet ramen (10 billion percent gross) and a lot of things that make a huge impact later (up to and including the sense of, "We made it once, we're going to take it as read that we can just duplicate it forever now, regardless of how improbable it was to make it the FIRST time").
I unfortunately got distracted and now forgot anything useful I had to comment about this volume, but it's mostly a connector between the prior book and the next one, like most of the books in a series. I *kind of* like this one, but it has a lot of cringe moments (pretty much anything with Ginro, which is true of the whole series), and other than meeting the villagers (and Gen), about the main point of significance is Senku meeting Chrome, and the two forming a union to build the Kingdom of Science.
Recommended, of course, for fans of the series; newcomers will have NO clue what's going on.
____ Phoenix ++
I was initially intrigued by the premise of a cataclysmic event that turned people to stone, and some humans waking up thousands of years later, but the first two volumes were kind of bland for me. They were good, at about a four-star rating, but the main character Senku and his two friends felt a bit flat.
On Volume 2, I really wanted to give up on this series and was about to give this volume four stars until after everything changed.
Senku came across a strange village full of people who were descendants of people who woke up before him, which made things unpredictable. Senku had to convince the residents that he wasn't evil or the son of someone banished from the village, and the story had RPG-like elements because he had to increase his reputation with villagers so that they would like him.
This is where the series finds its footing and I decided I want to read the rest of the series.
The new characters are likable. It's not as boring because there are new people for the main characters and villains to interact with.
My favorite characters are Chrome, the scientist, and Kohaku, the fighter. Then you have a little girl with a watermelon rind over her head who is really sweet. And finally you have two brothers whose interactions with each other and Senku are funny to watch, as one of them struggles between whether he should trust this strange new human "sorceror" with spiky hair who may or may not give him a gold spear.
The creations and intentions also start coming in, making the series more enjoyable to read as we start to see how Senku will rebuild technology and society from the ground up.
We've traded one trio in for another, with Senku moving on to a new tribe of humans who are basically living in the stone age. They don't understand metal, but they have lacquer. They don't know how food really works, but they've got architecture figured out. Basically, Dr. Stone decided that instead of doing whatever it was doing previous it decided to be an isekai. Rename it "My Genius Level Science Skills Make Me A Ruler In Another World" and it would fit.
I can't believe we get to this new village and we're immediately given a two page spread with 40 different names and faces to learn, followed by some family trees. It's shoving so much information I don't care about into one small sequence, then introducing more as the volume goes on! And so many of the designs are terrible, too. At least we get some neat science stuff, even if it's jumping around a lot and Senku is still a jerk about explaining it.
So much of this world doesn't make sense, not because it's a mystery but because what they've chosen to know and chosen not to know is so random. And then we have actual magicians showing up, I guess? Sure, whatever. At least the science is more exciting and the art has some better sequences than in the first two volumes.
Senku has split off from Taiju and Yuzuriha to find people to support his new science world. He meets Kohaku and she brings him to her village where he finds opposition (again) to his idea of a scientific civilization. But he also finds some support. Chrome, the "scientist" of the village has been collecting samples of every rock or substance he can. His storehouse is filled with wonderful things that Senku can use. He hopes to find a cure for Kohaku's sister so that the people will be on his side. Senku always looks out for himself and wants others just for how they can help him achieve his goals. But he doesn't let that show as he gathers followers and helpers to his cause. There's a lot of mineral, rock explanations as Senku teaches Chrome about the things he's found. Chrome had no clue these items were useful he just collected them. He did come up with some things to help the village by experimenting. Chrome loves to try new things. He's very enthusiastic and Senku brings him under his wing as an apprentice of sorts. An interesting character appears in this book. She's costumed as a watermelon. With great skills of deception she helps Senku by spying and learning about the people in her village. It's an interesting tale.
Have I praised the artwork in this series? GUYS. THE ARTWORK IS INCREDIBLE.
In all seriousness, the artwork is just incredible, so much detail packed into every chapter, it's a feast for the eyes! And that two page spread in the last chapter...DAMN, that was COOL!
I really like all of the characters introduced in this volume, specifically Suika, Chrome, and Gen. It's funny to me that Gen is such a vital part of their team because, unlike Senku, he can lie without hesitation and fool others. While people like that can be dangerous (and I'm getting some bad vibes from him) his inclusion in the gang is necessary because there are times when lying is the safest and easiest way to get what you want. Chrome is interesting because he's so passionate about science and curious, which is an integral part of science. It's no small wonder he and Senku get along. Speaking of small, Suika is fucking adorable and I love him and will protect him with my life.
Damn, I loved this volume so much and have fallen in love with this series. I hope I won't blow through everything I own tonight, but I'm not stupid enough to make promises.
