This is as interesting as the previous volume! My first comment will be for Megumi. Like OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG !!! She’s grown so much and become so much better. She definitely step out of her comfort zone and now she is as shining as ever! I love how she is an E student before and now look at her! Competing with one of the Elite ten! I am just so proud!

As for Souma, i got really worried when he said about that comment. I got extremely nervous! However, he is always as unpredictable as always! He always make interesting dishes and my gosh! His confidence and talent and perseverance just inspires me so much!

For the next battle, I know they will definitely have something like a magic for this!

Middling chapters from the middle of a long tournament, but the book still has a few good things going for it. First, we are actually given the final judging for three different cooking bouts, meaning there is no waiting for next volume to hear which chef's dish is actually the winning entry. An actual story development serves to give momentum into the next volume.

Also, we get to see the power of teamwork and are reminded how much the main characters and the supporting cast have actually evolved since the first volume by competing against and with each other.

Finally, there are some nice visual metaphors involving fairy tales, boxing and samurai warriors.

Thus, even lesser volumes serve to remind how great this series is.

It seems like Takumi got his mezzaluna knife back somewhere off-page. Previously, when Soma beat Subaru and won the knife back, Takumi wouldn't take it. He wanted to win it back from Soma in a shokugeki. However, a few volumes ago, Takumi is thinking about Soma and refers to him as the man who returned his knife to him. We didn't see Takumi use the mezzaluna in the third bout, though...probably because it wasn't suited to the cuisine he was cooking. His two-crescent pizza blending four-cheese pizza and sweet beef shigureni ends up a success, despite Evil Eizan's plot to disrupt the flavor with his own artichoke dish.

Megumi gives it her best effort with her apple dorayaki, using techniques Shinomiya taught her. Though it was well-received, it wasn't enough to overcome Momo's seriously cute patissier skill in the apple rose tarts she presented.

We learn more about Somei's background and how he got recruited into Central. He grew up the son of a single mom, and she was pushed out of the sushi industry by established chefs who wouldn't allow a woman in their kitchen. Somei worked alone (so he thought) to beat down the people who brought about her downfall. Though his butter dish is apparently marvelous, he watches Soma take him down with a butter-pilaf inari dish that used ingredients from his teamwork with Takumi and Megumi, as well as techniques he learned from every opponent up until now. Somei realizes the flipside to his life, fighting his battles as the lone wolf (though he had the support of other cooks at his restaurant) -- that is, the beauty and synergy of supporting and working with others. Somehow I feel he may be joining the rebels in the future.

I'm fascinated by this roux-out-of-mochi idea. Is it really a thing? I want to try it!

The third bout ends with two rebel victories and one Central victory. We learn that the fourth bout will take place a mere 90 minutes later, so the cooks will not have much of a chance to rest. Central only has three members left, who'll have to compete without any break, while the rebels have four (who wants to guess which opponents end up one-on-one in a fifth bout?).

I love how the rebels are using their specialties to support each other. Hisoko's brewed up two medicinal teas that she shares with the rebels. The other rebels weigh in on strategy -- the best people to put up against Central, which only has three cooks left.

Side note, Momo's parents have the same weird, pointy cat-ear hair protrusions that she has. XD

The fourth bout starts, and Erina is matched up against Momo, who quickly whips up a glittering fantasy castle out of stretched sugar and pastry rolls. The arrangement of this chapter is a little weird, as we haven't seen Erina's preparations at all, even as Momo's are already being judged. We're also left in the dark about which of the rebels are competing, aside from Erina.

This one was a lot of fun! I really love how Megumi’s story builds and the foreshadowing of why Momo gives cute nicknames to showing how it changes for Megumi. The idea that she is constantly showing people that their opinion of her is wrong is seriously one of my favorite parts of this series. Also can we talk about Honey Mustard getting a vote for the online contest the writers did? 😂

Eizan feels confident with his pre-determined victory but shaken by Takumi's confidence of his winning dish. This volume begins with Takumi's dish, a pizza with half beef shigureni and the other half with plain cheese. Takumi requests the judges to start with beef shigureni despite everyone's prediction that the judgement will be ruined by their taste buds after Eizan's strategic dish.

Food Wars: Shokugeki no Sōma!, Vol. 28 continues where the previous tankōbon left off and contains the next nine chapters (236–244) of the on-going manga series.

The Third Bout of the Régiment de Cuisine concludes. Takumi Aldini wins unanimously in their battle of Beef by outsmarting Etsuya Eizan, who has a tendency of outsmarting his opponents by any means possible. Unfortunately, Megumi Tadokoro loses her battle in Apples by Momo Akanegakubo in a split win with a score of 1–2. Finally, Sōma Yukihira unanimously defeats Sōmei Saitō in their battle of Butter. As a result, there are four members left in the Rebels Team and only three members left for the establishment in Central Gourmet Institute.

The tankōbon closes with the introduction of one of the Card Matches in the Fourth Bout: Erina Nakiri faces the Third Seat Momo Akanegakubo.

This tankōbon is written by Yūto Tsukuda and illustrated by Shun Saeki. It is nicely narrated on how Takumi Aldini outsmarting Etsuya Eizan and the impossibility of it. It shows, despite her loss, how Megumi Tadokoro has grown and learned how to battle with all her might in shokugeki. Finally, it shows how monstrous Sōma Yukihira is as a first-year student.

All in all, Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Sōma, Vol. 28 is a wonderful continuation to a series that seems really intriguing and I can't wait to read more.

The big team food war is continuing. Oddly, the specific results are somewhat predictable, so the real drama comes from the way that the characters get to those results. In this volume, the results of Takumi Aldini's cooking come to light, as well as the ways that his experiences at the school have shaped his cooking. Once again, this highlights the strength of the good guys and the weakness of the Central plan. Clearly, Soma Yukihira wasn't going to lose in the intermediate round, but how was Megumi Tadokoro going to do? That provided the most interesting part of the story, both the drama and the cooking.

The winners of the third bout of the team shokugeki competition are announced.

Years ago I read this series up to this volume because the rest weren't yet published. I reread enough volumes to get immersed in the story and am now looking forward to finishing it up!

I love the way the characters have developed so much in confidence (Megumi), sneakiness (Takumi) and teamwork (Soma).

Corniest food porn moment: "This pizza's deliciousness too is an inescapable illusion!" (with the illustration being two of the male food judges naked and chained to a barrel that is falling over a waterfall)

Wow what a match.

World: Solid art. The world building is mostly character based which is good. Most of it is pieces we have seen in the past.

Story: Solid end to round three. It went as I expected. I wish there was more female empowerment but oh well. Pacing was good and the recipes looked fantastic. The stuff with character histories is always good.

Characters: Samurai guy is well established which is good and Aldini was really well done. Strong payoffs.

So good.

Onward to the next book!

Some of my favorite characters were cooking in this volume, so yay! Megumi!! I actually wish the teamwork part of it was featured a little bit more. I liked the little bits of training that we saw, but I wanted them to help each other a little more obviously during the battle... or are they supposed to? I'm still a little confused, ha. I'm still kind of tired of this competition, but I am actually excited to see Erina cook (and I did like Momo's, haha, so her again is good).

Complete epicness!!!

It's a shame I can't give more than 5 stars because I would definitely give it a higher rating. This was pure food war brawling, boxing, and sword fighting. Soma's battle was beautifully fought, he is definitely my favourite character, and his was the fight I was looking forward too, and boy it never disappoints. :D Sadly now we have to wait for the next one because this one barely came out, but it's all good. Can't wait!

The courage of this series to have an Italian character make a cheese pizza and have the judges orgasm at how cheesy the cheese pizza is wow so cool very nice.

But after so much 1-star ratings I need to give this book at least a 2-star rating because the flashback to the first chapters of the series, and the comparison to who Soma is now and how he acts compared to then is fantastic.

I love that the first years are working together. The culmination of all their training and knowledge is finally being put to use. The current council are great chefs but they’ve become too complacent which, in my opinion, has stunted their growth. Also, finally getting to see Takumi and Megumi really cook was great!

Who knew Takumi could be this crafty!? And I do kind of love how blown away Central is by the fact that Soma, Megumi and Takumi are all working together, even as they battle as individuals. I might be a sucker for teamwork stories, haha.

This is one of my favorites of the series so far: Soma comes back into the spotlight, Megumi gets more story line and reminds me why she's one of my favorite characters, there's a huge focus on teamwork, and... it actually made me cry a little.

Takumi beats Etsuya and brings the resistance a win. Next up is Momo Senpai and Megumi in a battle of sweets. Megumi tries her best but loses the round to Momo Senpai. Last up is Soma who wins his round against Somei.
