In an endless sea of sand drifts the Mud Whale, a floating island city of clay and magic. In its chambers a small community clings to survival, cut off from its own history by the shadows of the past.
The Mud Whale has finally reached the shores of Amonlogia, but it quickly becomes clear that Sir Rochalízo wasn’t being entirely up-front when he said the people of the Mud Whale would all be welcome. His father the duke has placed harsh conditions on their citizenship, and they only have three days to agree…or face the consequences!
In an endless desert floats the Mud Whale, an island city of clay moving by magic, containing a small community where most die young their life spans cut short by their own magic. Chakuro diligently chronicles their lives... This all changes when he meets a young girl and they are suddenly attacked by an Empire! What will be the citizens of Falaina do?!
The four brothers of Amonlogia are so super gorgeous! Hahaha I just loved their character design... How they worked apart and yet also looked like brothers. These new characters totally made Children of the Whales vol 9 for me... Amonlogia itself is also gorgeous. After the beauty of the sands to arrive in a new land is super fun and I love how the art showcased the Duke's problems. And this cover... GAHHHH, so gorgeous! I can't wait to see the paper version (cause we've got to have it, am I right?)!!
Events in Children of the Whales vol 9 are what we've been waiting for ever since we met Rochalízo and his crew. And WOW!! I didn't expect that at all... Honestly I felt exactly like Suou. From meeting the brothers to what Rochalízo claims, everything. Shuan is totally my hero in this... I couldn't believe that the unmarked had him do that... The brother of Amonlogia seriously are giving Orca a run for evil villain away!!
The implications of the shock of Rochalízo companions, in Children of the Whales vol 9, who know the people of the mud whale and also know the Duke very well was particularly intriguing even as it was totally heart breaking!! Oh Rochalízo please, please say it isn't so... surely you wouldn't be such a snake in the grass... Ouni though, like Shuan really rises to the occasion. This is their fate!! Chakuro also was quite shocking as to his response to the threats as well... I was quite proud of this bookworm...
In Children of the Whales vol 9, the Duke of Amonlogia certainly turned out to be totally different than the mud whale was lead to believe. He really is a piece of work... even his sons are shocked and they are proving to be quite like him. I am totally reeling from that end and the mark's response. The rebellion on the mud whale also comes to a head and I need to know. It really is a dilemma that the marked are in now. They've always lived one way and now they are faced with major changes, ones they thought they were escaping!
Children of the Whales vol 8-9 totally upped everything I was expecting from this series. Now I really need to know what's going to happen... To Ouni, Chakuro, Lycos, Shuan and even Rochalízo! Because we know Orca is also on his way...! These nations of the sand are poised at each other's throats and we know from traveling to Amonlogia that nations have fallen over easier situations than the people of the mud whale are in now...

Otro tomo que he devorado.
Will the inhabitants of the Mud Whale ever find peace? Once the Mud Whale has finally arrived at Amonlogia, they are at first greatly with a warm welcome, however, their hosts quickly turn volatile, pressing the inhabitants of the Mud Whale between a rock and a hard place. It seems as though there is something sinister not only within the Mud Whale, but also within the King of Amonlogia. He seems to both abhor and crave the mysterious island, calling it beautiful and evil all the same. Even his own sons and his closest cohorts find him acting strangely in the scope of this new island. Could the Mud Whale be influencing this King’s mind? Or is he hiding something? Most importantly, how many inhabitants of the Mud Whale will be lost to Amonlogia before they can find their next beacon of hope?
The author’s note at the back of this volume really makes me think about how sometimes, your work really becomes you for a time. It’s interesting to think about. Something else interesting in this volume (besides the character and plot developments) is that Umeda-sensei addresses how feminine Suoh is, how unnaturally so and how used to it the inhabitants of the Mud Whale are… when he’s mistaken for a woman by one of Rochalizo’s brothers. It was very entertaining to me and quite funny. A nice bit of comedy before this story took yet another dark turn. What could be the matter with the king? And what dark demon lord are those sand sea creatures following? I doubt that it’s Lykos, because that answer is far too obvious. Perhaps the Mud Whale only so happens to be going in the same direction as this dark demon lord, just as these sea sand creatures are, and they’ve become a sort of traveling companion. Or, just as likely, this Mud Whale island itself is a dark demon lord, which, wouldn’t that crown Ouni as its prince, and Aíma and Neri as its princesses? Furthermore, can the inhabitants of the Mud Whale ever catch a break? It seems as though there’s a dark cloud looming over them, causing their suffering to be never-ending, with only brief reprieves partitioning the pain and anguish.
Well the other shoe just dropped! Having reached Amonlogia, the people of the Mud Whale are eager to settle down on proper land, even if they are surprised by how the port looks. However, only the Unmarked are allowed to disembark at first, to go discuss with the Duke (Rochalizo's father) regarding their stay. The terms are harsher than they expected, though, and is against everything they sailed forth for. Rochalizo's shadiness comes out as they try to force their hand, but Shuan had foreseen something like this and came along. Still, they are in a difficult place, with the two Mole twins trying to stir the Marked to abandon the Unmarked and just sail away from the conditions imposed on them. Chakuro, Ouni and Lykos each try to mitigate the situation by acting alone.
This volume brings in a host of new characters, like Rochalizo's older brothers, one of whom takes a fancy to Suou thinking he is a girl. It was humorous for a bit, but all three of them basically pouncing on him - eh.... Anyway, the humor is hardly enough to balance out the shock, and violence in this arc. Once again, they are being persecuted just for being what they are, and being their ancestors' descendants. Amidst this tension, we already know Orca is on the way, so I am a little nervous about how it is going to all play out.

Aghast! Once again, tragedy comes to the Mud Whale. Chakuro has an impossible decision to make, and thanks to a visit from a spirit in the sand, Ouni follows his lead. This was a very moving (heartbreakingly so) volume despite a bit of comedy at the expense of Suou and Deíktis (one of the duke’s four sons). Along with the last book, it is a favorite of the series. I won’t say more so as not to spoil things. Wow, when the Children finally arrive at the port of Amonlogia duchy, mangaka Abi Umeda really flexes her skills with the sprawling city. It’s very evocative of Venice with the many tributaries winding through the city before terminating into the Sea of Sand.
Much better than the previous volume. I was and was not expecting what happened when they reached amongolia. Ouni although was a surprise. At this point in the series I don't know how these kids can live peaceful lives off the mud whale. Anyway, this is a volume that keeps me interested in continuing the series unlike the last one.
Back into this series, they have reached Rochalizo's home, Amonlogia. They're immediately confronted with violence, and then with strict negotiations that turn out to be not much of a negotiation, really. It wasn't terribly surprising what Rochalizo did to them, despite thinking they'd been getting along so well. I can see what a bad position Rochalizo was in, but he still wasn't very smart about his choices here. I was really surprised to see what a standing Suou ended up taking, and was honestly impressed by how strong of a stance he took. He was put in a bad spot, and he did what he thought was right, and it makes me a really big fan of his character, honestly. I'm intrigued and worried by where the plot was going at the end of the volume. It could go really bad before they get out of this.
