Audrey is an award winning journalist returning home to take over the local newspaper her father and uncle ran prior to his death. Past secrets are start to become known and it links Audrey to a childhood secret she would love to keep buried. Her high school boyfriend is also the local sheriff and brings a load of trouble when she tries to get the scoop on local news.

Colt has a lot riding on his shoulders, his the local sheriff, father of a troubled son, and his high school sweetheart just came back to town for good. Trying to keep his son on the straight and narrow path, battling with his ex-wife and now trying to keep Audrey safe.

In Self Defense is definitely a suspense, not much romance weaved into the plot. It did keep my interest on the suspense which is what kept me reading, a little more romance would have spiced it up a bit. The characters were hard to relate to, they fit the story line and made the suspense work. If readers are searching for a suspense novel, very light on the romance this would be a quick, easy read for them. However if they are wanting both suspense and romance, In Self Defense would probably not be the best fit for readers.

Audrey Anderson has returned to her hometown to take over the family newspaper. Even though it's a small town, a juicy story develops when two dead bodies are found, firstly in the home of Mennonite Sarah Lauder's home, and then another in Sarah's place of business! It would appear that both men have ties to the Chicago mob. Audrey's determination to get the scoop has her interacting with Sheriff Colt Tanner. They were high school sweethearts (20 years ago), but he broke her heart when he cheated on her, something she still hasn't forgiven him for (20 years later).

So what does the mob have to do with a quiet Mennonite family? Why is Sarah's husband nowhere to be found? And does it all connect to a secret kept in the basement of Audrey's newspaper from 25 years ago, one she wants to keep hidden, but threatens to be exposed by damaged water pipes?

This is one of the cases where the intriguing, suspenseful plot makes up for the lack of any romance. And when I say lack of romance, I mean it! Audrey and Colt really don't spend all that much time together throughout the course of the book. She still resents him for drunkenly cheating on her when they were teenagers, which resulted in Colt having a son. I tend to have trouble with protagonists who can't past what happened in high school, especially in a case like this, where it has been nearly two decades!

Get over it, Audrey!

So don't seek this out if you're after a hot 'n' heavy romance. (Audrey and Colt only kiss a couple of times.) But if you want a great mystery thriller, it should fit the bill! There were two good plots to keep track of that provided lots of twists and turns, and everything managed to get wrapped up satisfactorily in the end. There were some solid suspenseful moments, and Audrey made for a smart, capable heroine. The epilogue gives a happy-ever-after for Audrey and Colt, though it seems more interested in setting up further stories for other characters.

IN SELF DEFENSE by Debra Webb is the beginning of a new series that takes place in Winchester, Tennessee. Well-known crime journalist, Audrey Anderson, returns to her hometown of Winchester to take over the family newspaper. Leaving behind her days of investigating crime, she is now focused on running the newspaper and taking care of her ailing mother. Her mother suffers from dementia and resides in a nursing home. Audrey’s heart breaks each time she visits because sometimes her mother can't remember her or where she is.

Audrey and her mother share a deep secret that binds them together. They have kept it for over twenty years. This secret is one that they have not shared with anyone, even Audrey’s uncle Phillip. Now that a local man has disappeared things start to heat up for Audrey. In order to get the story she must work with the sheriff, Colton Tanner, who was the love of her life many years ago before she left for the big city.

Audrey fears that the recent murders may be related to her family secret which has been buried over the past two decades. She fears those she loves will be hurt and will do whatever it takes to protect them. Her emotions are running high and learning to trust Colt again is pushing her to the limits. Can she protect her loved ones and the secret she has kept all those years as well as help solve the murders and locate the missing man….Will Colt let her down again when she needs him the most….

This is a fast-paced romantic suspense book that will keep the reader guessing until the end. The author has done a wonderful job of using misleading as well some twists to keep you wondering whodunit. Also, there is a small appearance of the undertaker family of the DuPonts, which are featured in her new series coming soon and in her current prequel, THE UNDERTAKER’S DAUGHTER’S.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. I was not required to write a positive review. This review is strictly my own. If you love romantic suspense at its best, you need to read this book!

Audrey Anderson returns to her hometown of Winchester, Tennessee, just in time to be caught in the middle of the disappearance of a local man. Running into her former first love, Sheriff Colt Tanner, is inevitable since Audrey is the owner of the local newspapers and is chasing the story, but it certainly is not without risks. Audrey has to navigate the bodies that keep being discovered, the body in her newspaper office’s basement and the yearning looks from Colt in order to help solve this intriguing whodunit from Harlequin. Writing with her usual hints that are misleading and twisted as well as with the ones mixed in that are authentic, Debra Webb masterfullly draws the reader into the story, leading her fans to guess what is going to happen next in this fast-paced romantic suspense. It even includes a cameo appearance of the undertaker family of DuPonts, featured in her new series coming in the spring and in her current prequel, THE UNDERTAKER’S DAUGHTER. I thoroughly enjoyed this quick read and know that fans of Debra Webb and romantic suspense will not be disappointed in any way!

Thank you Debra Webb for the ARC of In Self Defense by Debra Webb that I read and reviewed.
This book was a great fast paced thriller that had a lot of suspense and action that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat until the end. I really enjoyed Audrey and Colt as characters and their past relationship adds an extra demension to the story. The tension between the two was great.
As for the mystery part I really enjoyed that too. It was fast paced and with Audrey trying to uncover the story of what was going on in Winchester now while trying to keep the past hidden it added to the story and made it more intresting how Webb ties it all together.
This book is a great start to this series and I can’t wait to see where the next story goes. I am giving this book five out of five stars.

I am a fan of Debra Webb she can create a suspense to keep you turning pages at break neck speed.
The book opens with a murder in the Mennonite community. Colton and Branch are investigating. Colton is the local Sherriff and Branch is with the FBI. I didn’t realize this is part of a series. I recommend it already. Audrey has come home to take care of her mother with dementia and run her family’s newspaper. I am typically not a fan of journalists but Debra created a relatable character in Audrey.

They suspect the murder is a result of a Chicago mob. In addition to this mystery we have the mystery from Audrey’s past.

This book was complicated for me. Could I forgive Colton for betraying her even if it was 15 year ago? Their past was interesting. Colton and Branch were star football players and rivals. Colton and Audrey were a couple until one night he is drunk and betrays her.

Sexual content - think there was one physical scene. i was too wrapped up in the mystery :)
Violence - a few murders, and a man hunt

I received this book from Netgalley. I was not required to write a positive review.

I love reading a Debra Webb book. She can really make a mystery interesting by adding a love story to it. Audrey and Colt have history from 1 mistake he made. Its a well written story that has fascinating twists and turns in the plot. I love how the story starts with a murder. Then she draws you into the story. I'm real curious to read the next book from this series. But I'm also interested in reading her new book coming out in Mira which is also from this town. Ohhh there is some great reading ahead from Debra. Can't wait!

Thank you to #NetGalley for this ARC of #InSelfDefense

Another wonderfully written romantic suspense by Debra Webb.

Crime journalist, Audrey Anderson, has returned to her hometown of Winchester to take over the family Newspaper business. With her days of days of investigating crime behind her, Audrey is focused on the newspaper publication and caring for her ailing mother. But when two out of town men end up murdered in her small town, Audrey finds herself working together with the county Sheriff, Colton Tanner, who happens to be her former boyfriend and love of her life. As things heat up, Audrey comes to realize that the recent murders may be related to a family secret that has been buried for the past two decades. She fears more than anything for those she loves and will do whatever it takes to protect them.

This book is laced with mystery and suspense. The characters are well crafted and support the plot well. While there is a romantic aspect to the storyline, it does not take center stage, it develops around the main plot and fits in nicely. 4 stars.

Debra Webb is one of my "go to" authors for suspense and she did not let me down on this one!
Once more her clock ticking approach to writing builds the suspense and sucks you right into the story.
From the first page to the last you will be at the edge of your seat as you immerse yourself into Debra's world of Winchester, Tennessee and the secrets buried there.
Great characters and plot that keeps you glued to the story. Another winner from Ms. Webb!

A good plot although I felt like the book seemed to drag at times. Rey Anderson moved back to her home town to care for her mother and take over the family newspaper business. When a murder happens in the small town she is one of the first on the scene. Being a reporter she is pushy and her ex boyfriend is the sheriff. Rey is the type of character you either love or hate and the story seems to revolve around her.

I really liked this book. Audrey was determined to get the truth. You could feel the emotions between Colton and Audrey the hurt she held on for longer then maybe she should have. The guilt he felt was so real but the love for his son shown threw as well. A secret that was kept for over 20 years. was just a great story. I can't wait to read more on this couple and others in Winchester. I felt like it was a town I'd actually love to live in.

.In Self Defense (A Winchester, Tennessee Thriller Book 1)

By Debra Webb

IN SELF DEFENSE is the beginning of a new fast-paced romantic suspense series that takes place in Winchester, Tennessee.( A town that holds deep dark secrets, some Aubrey(Rey) has been hiding for the past 25 years . The book opens with a murder and Colton Tanner and Branch Holloway are investigating. Colt is the local Sherriff and Branch is with the FBI.
Well-known crime journalist, Audrey Anderson made a great life for herself in DC but has returned to her hometown of Winchester to take over the family newspaper and take care of her mother who suffers from dementia . The last person she wants to come face to face with is her first love. The man who broke her heart all thoes years ago Sherriff Colton Tanner.
Audrey will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. Can she forgive Colton and work together to solve the murders ? Are these murders linked to the secret she has kelpt for the past 25 years ? Will she be able to keep the ones she loves safe ?

While this book is a Harlequin it reads more like a mystery / thriller / suspense. The characters are all well developed and the plot flows smoothly. The whole book is full of twist and will keep you turning the pages. While their is some Romance in this story it kind of takes back place to the mystery & suspense. All the twists, secrets , and suspense in this story take you on a spine tingling, rollar coaster of a ride. Trust me once you open this book you will not want to put it down.

Audrey is a crime journalist who back home to be there for her mother who has dementia. While a couple of deaths seem to be connected Audrey is trying to get the scoop while sheriff Colton is trying to make sure she keeps her distance from the case. Thing is the more closer she gets into the details the most things in her family past might have some type of connection to whats going on and they really need to see who is behind the mystery that's going on and capture them before things get worse.

I liked this book. Personally it was a bit too slow for me it could be that I'm so used to mystery thrillers that have so much going on without a moments rest that this book ended up not as good. Not that this book was bad because it wasn't but that it was just at a slower pace then I'm used to. There was times where I lost interest but then would pick this book up and find myself enjoying it. I did like the mystery and how everything progressed in the book seeing the clues unfold and seeing how these two worked together. There was some obvious connection and its clear they had a past and it was nice to see that. What I do appreciate is that that connection between the two didn't overpower the book, I mean this book is a mystery not a romance and sometimes authors tend to go heavy on the romance and kinda randomly remember that the book was a mystery intrigue book and this book wasn't that which I appreciated. Overall pretty good book I enjoyed it.

Audrey Anderson moves back to Winchester to take over the two centuries run family newspaper. She left Winchester to become a big time journalist but returned home after a news scandal. Her ex from Jr High through HS is now a Police Officer. She’ll never forgive him for an indiscretion during a senior party.
Colt has never gotten over Audrey but she barely acknowledges his presence, let alone wants anything to do with him.
When a member of the small Mennonite Community kills an intruder, they can’t help but cross paths. She wants the story. Was this just a run of the mill intruder that she killed or does this Mennonite family have secrets? Audrey is determined to find out. She’s also determined to use Colt’s guilt against him every step of the way.
I enjoyed this book. It’s not a real long book but I love how it all centers around Winchester, TN where we find people from The Undertaker’s daughter. It’s like we are getting to know the whole community.
Debra Webb ALWAYS has me turning pages as fast as I can. I love her books and the way she writes. I can’t wait to see what else awaits us in Winchester. I received a copy of this book for an honest review.

In Self Defense is full of mystery. Rey comes back home to Winchester, Nashville to take over the family newspaper business. The little town that she grew up in holds deep dark secrets, some of which Rey has been hiding for the past 25 years. When two murders take place in her hometown, her journalistic instincts take over and she will stop at nothing to uncover the truth. Does these new murders have anything to do with the secret she has kept for the past 25 years? Her mom can't give her answers because she suffers from a degenerative mental disease. She reluctantly teams up with the sexy sheriff, Colt, who broke her heart in high school. Can she forgive him? Can she uncover the mystery of these murdered men? Will she ever be free of her secret? This is a well written mystery book. It will keep you reading "just one more chapter" until the end. Although, it is Harlequin, it does not have any sex scenes in it. I does have romance, but the main story line is suspense. It is a must read. I did like how it does link to another one of her new series, Undertaker's Daughter, which takes place in the same town.

I enjoyed this easy to read romantic thriller with secrets best kept buried. The characters are so like able. Audrey is back home from a career of a big time crime reporter to take over the family newspaper and care for her mother who's suffering from dementia. When a Chicago mob hit man is killed in a Mennonite family's home in a small town in Tennessee it's big news. Audrey must save the newspaper so she plants herself in the middle of Sheriff Coltons investigation . She and Sheriff Colt have a painful past one she won't forgive or forget and haunts him yet. Another murder another hit man in the Mennonites business. It could'nt be a mistaken identity could it. In order to keep Audrey safe Colt must work with her or arrest her but having her so close is painful. As the story unfolds Audrey fears more is at stake then she thought could a long buried secret be revealed to destroy her. I received this ARC from the author in exchange for my honest review. I'd buy this book and share with my friends.

Secrets and intrigue nabbed my attention quickly! With the story line of two gruesome murders competing with the reunion of young love done wrong, there's never a dull moment in the first Winchester, Tennessee Thriller. I enjoyed it and look forward to more in the series!

Audrey Anderson has made a life for herself as a big city reporter in DC for the last decade, but now that her uncle is wanting to retire, she's returning home to take over the family newspaper business. The last person she wants to be interacting with is the man who broke her heart all those years ago, but with this latest burst of crime, it can't be helped.

Winchester, Tennessee sheriff Colton Tanner made the biggest mistake of his life when he hurt Audrey, and even though he wishes with all of his might that he could turn back the clock on her pain, he can't regret all that came from his dalliance. Working with her on this case brings back memories and showcases the attraction that neither of them can deny is running strong.

This is another fantastic romantic/suspense read by Debra Webb. It is a fast and enjoyable read, that you can read in a day. The story line kept me turning the pages until the end.

I am excited as it even includes an appearance of the undertaker family of DuPonts, featured in her new series coming later this year and in her already released prequel, THE UNDERTAKER’S DAUGHTER.

The suspense starts from the very first pages and doesn’t stop. The author has brought all the elements together that I look for in a romantic suspense story, strong characters, a thrilling mystery, and a touch of romance.

The writing style is exceptional, as only Debra Webb can do. She makes her characters and scenic descriptions authentic and it feels as though you are part of the story.

If you like reading an exciting suspense thriller, with a touch of romance, then you will love
