What will happen... when Jenn learns the truth that has been brewing deep inside me?
...when she learns my desires have been restrained?
...when containing them is no longer possible?
Will she flee when there’s no place to run?

Traveling to the isolation of a tropical island, we agree to lay our marriage and our future on the line. It’s the only way to face the demons—my demons—that threaten our life together.
For us to make our marriage work, we must break down barriers, reveal the hidden places, and shine light where darkness has taken root.
This reprieve from life is meant to be about us, our marriage, and our future.
It is...until the unexpected happens...

Will our marriage survive? Will we?

Unexpected is the perfect title for this novella by Aleatha Romig. Twist, turns and the unexpected is always what she brings to the game and she did not disappoint . . . again. And oh yea, this time she brought the serious heat.

Divorce is not always the answer. Sometimes we lose our way and just need the ability to find the direction home. Sometimes we must delve into the recesses of our mind and discover what we need. Sometimes we need to discover what or perhaps who we are.

Once again, Aleatha has given us so much in such a short novella. There is heat, passion, eroticism, angst, lies, truth, discovery, plot twist and shock. But then it is Aleatha and what else would one expect? Well since she gave me all that I could want in a book, I am going to give her all she deserves. No less than 5 stars!

I enjoyed reading Unexpected. This is a short book similar to Aleatha’s Unconventional. Both are standalone and they can be read in any order. Each book following one couple.
Jenn and Paul are on the verge of a divorce, but they decided to give their relationship one more chance. 10 day vacation in tropical island where they supposed to talk, open up to each other, be honest and reveal secrets that both of them have.
There is some very hot sex (or should I say a lots of very hot sex), beautiful romantic island and some interesting turn of event.
Will these two be able to get over the issues they have and save their marriage? Read this book to find out.
At the end there is a bonus material from Aleatha’s next work. She gives us a glimpse into this new story and let me tell you I am very excited to read that next.
I suggest you get a copy of Unexpected and you will be hooked.

Gotta love an Aleatha tale and this one doesn’t disappoint. Brilliant standalone but If you’re a fan a brilliant follow on to unconventional. Hot, hot, hot with a twist, a sharp unexpected twist. You’ll love Jenn and Paul a couple taking time out from their busy lives to secure their future together as a couple in an unconventional (see what I did there?) way. Only criticism I am a sucker for the long haul which is why I can not wait for Aleatha’s new dark series beginning with Secrets 🖤 This was such a quick and enjoyable read a fantastic five stars 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 from me, Aleatha’d again.....

Reading Unexpected brought into question how well do you know your spouse? With Paul and Jenn's story, it's more about what wasn't said and the secrets they are both holding on to.

I loved how these two are discovering one another and learning to trust what you can't sometimes see. Being on a tropical island was the perfect setting for a hot, sexy exploration of getting to know your spouse all over again but in true Aleatha fashion, the Unexpected happened.

Did I mention the incredible little prologue teaser for Secrets, book one of Aleatha's new Web of Sin trilogy which you will find at the end of Unexpected? All I can say to this is that she's back baby, the Aleatha Romig I love! I know I'm going to be caught in Aleatha's web with mystery, intrigue and mayhem with this my now most anticipated new series of 2018.

I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads, so here is my review.
What do you do when your marriage is over and all that is left is to sign the divorce papers? You take your therapist advice and go away for a vacation where the two of you can talk about the problems in your marriage.
Paul and Jenn Masters have secrets they are keeping from each other but they thought it wasn't causing problems in their marriage. But when Paul told Jenn his desires, she knew that her past would have to be revealed. While on the tropical island and no one else is around, she will learn Paul's secret and find that she is really alright with his desires too. And it seems their marriage is going to be saved until the unexpected happens.
Can Paul and Jenn's marriage survive what happened on the island? Will they give up and sign the divorce papers after all? Can Paul forgive her for the secret she keeps about her past?
I didn't read UNCONVENTIONAL but I am going to go back soon and read it and see what I missed on this couple. As usual Aleatha Romig has written a story that has you right there, believing and feeling this couples pain and happiness. She knows how to tell a story to keep you entertained until the very end. I can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Unexpected by Aleatha Romig was brilliant! Paul and Jenn's story was emotional and captivating. Their story had me intrigued and hooked since the beginning.

Paul and Jen were facing divorce but before signing they decided to give it one more try. They go away to a private island. In their time there they start learning things about each other that they both had hidden from each other during their marriage.

Will their island retreat be what they need to save their marriage or will they learn that divorce it's the next step? Will their love survive their secrets and their future?

Embark in Paul and Jenn's sexy, heartbreaking journey. If it's filled with the hotness, sexiness, and the angst that only Aleatha Romig knows how to give.

This story is very sexy with a darker twist. I really enjoyed how Jenn's boundaries got pushed and how there relationship got strong with the new turn in it. Paul is a great character you can feel how much he luvs his wife but is torn with what he also needs. So it is great that he can finally be himself and be The husband Jenn needs. I really liked Jenn as well this woman is so strong she has been through so much and is still strong at the end of it all. I really like them they make a great team and are so sexy together they just being out the best in each other. There are a few dark moments in this book but the author does give a warning but to be honest I read worst. But I like that the author gave me the warning. The book has me hooked from the very start with this book. I couldn't get enough of it. Then there was also a lil teaser from her new book Secrets the new series Web of Sin wow I m dying for more of that it looks so good I can't wait. I would highly recommend this book it's short sexy with a great story and the characters are really good. I luvd it.

This is a short novella that is a quick steamy read. In an attempt to save their marriage Jenn and Paul take a vacation to a secluded island. As the only occupants of the island they are able to start working through their issues until the “unexpected” happens that has the potential to derail the progress they have made. The chemistry between Jenn and Paul is strong both in and out of the bedroom and you want them to work out their issues so they can have their HEA. I really liked this book, if you are looking for a quick, sexy read then this is the book for you. Additionally, at the end of the book Aleatha gives the reader a glimpse of her new work “Secrets”. Can’t wait for it to be released. Advanced copy provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.

4 “Saucy” Stars

What a saucy little novella. It was spicy and also very emotional. A couple at a cross road, divorce or try a last chance endeavor to lay all the cards on the table. Either try and see or walk away. And try they decide. Jenn and Paul......each holding in secrets and one week to let everything out.

On a remote beautiful island, I loved how Jenn and Paul were starting to really open up about their wants and desires. Each holding back on their past. Not sure if the other would be receptive, Paul begins to show Jenn his true self. And their passionate love begins as anew.

But then there is an incident that was Unexpected. It’s violent and shocking. I think I would have felt better if it wasn’t so violent because the ending felt a little to easy. I know this is a novella but it wrapped up a little too nicely for my liking. But in all, the epilogue brought it to full circle and I enjoyed.

And then......there is a sneak peak for the author’s new series, Web of Sins. The prologue is included for Secret, this first book in the series and boy did it get me excited!! October 30th can’t get here soon enough!!

Wow, wow, wow.

Can’t believe this author stooped so low.

Cant’t believe she tricked readers (me lol) into reading this sh•t.

Keep reading if want to know the real trigger warning for this novella.

*Spoilers?*

The fun fact is that while reading the blurb (“Until the unexpected happens…”, “Will our marriage survive? Will we?”) I just knew what was going to happen, but then I read the trigger warning at the beginning of the novella and that actually reassured me. It wasn’t so different from her other warnings.
This novella explores consensual play in the area of domination and submission. There are also memories and a scene in which those boundaries are tested and crossed. If any of this is a trigger for you, please return this novella and do not read.

WHERE DOES IT SAYS R A P E

I’m so f•cking angry right now, you can’t even imagine.

The scene she is talking about is a RAPE SCENE.
No “boundaries” were “tested” and “crossed”! SHE WAS RAPED.
There was no “play”. SHE WAS F•CKING RAPED.
However, if you enjoy pushing your boundaries, are curious, and enjoy a lot of heat with an HEA, then please read and enjoy UNEXPECTED.
Are you f•cking kidding me? Is she seriously describing rape as “a lot of heat”?

As of today, Aug 31, 2018, the warning is this and there's no mention of rape.

Apart from the trigger warning, what’s wrong with people? Really, what’s wrong with them? Why would someone write a rape scene just for drama and shock’s sake? And why so many women readers are okay with this? Why no one is complaining?

Mine is a general and rhetorical consideration. Everyone is free to read whatever they want. To each their own.

Be aware, this is not a story about rape fantasies. You wish!

This novella has only 14 chapters and an epilogue.

In chapter 12, while they are having sex on their private island, they are "interrupted" by two men. The hero gets knocked out cold by a blow on his head and the heroine remains tied to the headboard because, you know, they were “playing”.
You can imagine what happens next and it’s explicit.
Don’t you feel the “heat” yet?
So, they’re alone on this private island that’s part of an archipelago in the middle of nowhere and what a coincidence, two men shipwreck exactly on their f•cking island. Instead of asking for help (or just for f•cking food?), they see a naked woman and decide that rape is a better idea and do you know why? Because of f•cking course the two men are on “an international watch list of drug smugglers and pirates”.
Very plausible. Yup. Everything makes so much sense. #sarcasm

In chapter 13, the hero saves her and she is the one apologising for what happened. She was raped because of him (it was his fault she was tied up) and she is f•cking apologising?!
In chapter 14, they’re saved and a few days later (yes, days) she's complaining that her husband “treats her with kid gloves” instead of f•cking her.

The end.

In the epilogue, a year later they’re back on that f•cking island because that’s “where they saved their marriage”.

How can anyone believe this sh•t?
How can any relationship survive after this? It would take at least 3 books only for that.
But don't worry, it's only a rape scene and a HEA in only 3 short chapters.
No big deal.

The sad thing is that I actually liked what I was reading before the out-of-the-blue rape scene.

Why did she have to ruin everything like this? WHY.

ALL she had to do was make the hero push some of heroine’s hard limits. That’s what the warning says, that’s what I was expecting and that’s what would have worked.

Since Aleatha gives 5 stars to the T.M. Frazier books, I should have known something like this was going to happen. Rape was treated the same f•cking way as in King. Both rape scenes happen almost at the end and are forgotten in 5 seconds. To never be mentioned again because the heroines are not victims. They’re super humans that can’t be touched by such a minor thing like rape.
Frazier implies death is worse (puh-lease) and Romig says this is nothing because her heroine had it worse in the past (Really? REALLY?!).

Don’t know if or what’s better or worse because that was a book, while this is a novella. Maybe the shortness was a factor, maybe not. But that’s the point! Writing good novellas and short stories is already difficult (much more complicated than a book), who told her adding rape to the mix was a good idea? Really, why no one stopped her from f•cking up a good story?

I was disappointed then because Aleatha is one of my favourites and, as I implied (without writing her name) in my Tyrant review, she is 547868 times better than Frazier and I’m disappointed now because I didn’t think she would ever write rape like this. Apparently she is no better.

For an author who wrote a whole series about consequences, she sure forgot the consequences of rape for a woman.

I don’t give a f•ck if your heroine is “strong”. If you use rape, you must take it seriously. I can’t read sh•t like this where rape is dismissed in this way and is only used for “fun” to shock readers.
It’s also an insult to all the authors who write about rape because they actually want to say something.

So… What was the point? Money? Sales are “bad” (she can’t stop complaining about it), so let’s sell rape?

Don’t care it was only $1.08.
Returned for refund.

I only hope she doesn’t f•ck up her new series like that.
Random violence only because it sells or because it’s cool or because whatever is not my thing.

What happens when you are about to sign divorce papers but you don't want a divorce? Can a marriage be saved when it's gotten so bad that papers have been drawn up? Well, Paul and Jenn decide to give it one more chance a week away on a secluded island. One week where he is going to reveal the secret desires he has been keeping locked away throughout their marriage.

This was a steamy read that had a couple of twists and turns that were unexpected. Each of the books in this series can be read as a standalone but I guarantee once you read one you'll want to read them all.

Happy Reading!!!

Paul and Jenn Masters are on the brink of divorcing but when they realise the finality of signing their divorce papers they decided to take their therapist advice and have a secluded 10 day retreat to try and save their marriage.
A lot happens on that small island in the novella, good, bad, happy and ugly times, Aleatha writes brilliantly yet again.

“I don’t want to make love. I want to fuck you like I’ve never fucked you before. I want to spend the next ten days making you hear me…even when I don’t speak.”

There was so much passion, intensity, and emotion packed into this scorching hot standalone novella! Even though I didn’t know much about them going in, Paul and Jenn Masters ended up being a couple I can truly root for! Hot scenes with sexy BDSM elements...a man struggling with showing his true self to the woman he loves...a woman still struggling with her past and everything that comes with it. A darker erotic romance with a suspenseful twist...I couldn’t put it down! Aleatha never lets me down when it comes to this genre! I only wanted MORE!

it's not completely all sexy and hot nor all hearts and flowers, but rest assure all is right in their unexpected world.

description

This was a short, smoking hot novella.

Paul and Jenn are married but in the opening of the book, it looks like things are not fairing well for this couple. So upon advice, they see if they can work out their troubles on a remote island and little getaway.

Paul has secrets and after 6 years with his wife he realizes that he can't go on without sharing them. Jenn too has secrets and in order for this couple to move forward in what Paul needs, she has to come clean about her past. What better place to lay it all there then a paradise for just the two of them? But can their secrets move them forward or will the storm be too much?

My only complaint is that this was too short. It was exactly what it was supposed to be, but I wanted some more. It sure was sexy though and there was also some twisted moments. And because it was a novella, the resolution came as quickly as the problem. It does make me want to pick up Unconventional though because I liked this all of this Aleatha in a quick little package and what a way to make a reader become overly excited for what is coming next from her. I am ready for more right now.

A great, quick read that doesn't leave you hanging.
Dr. Kizer does it again. Paul and Jenn are struggling in their marriage. At the suggestion of their marriage counselor, they take 10 days in a remote location to lay all their cards on the table. Each of them has been keeping a secret. When Paul's truth comes out on the island, things seem to be looking up. Just as Jenn is ready to share her truth, the unthinkable happens.
Will Paul and Jenn be able to put it all behind them? How will Paul react when Jenn tells him her truth? Will they be able to save their marriage or was the unthinkable the final nail in the coffin?

Oh, and did I mention that the prologue for the new book Secrets in the Web of Sin trilogy is included at the end? Can't wait to get my hands on that one!

Unexpected is exactly what you get with this novella. It is short, hot with an unexpected twist.

It is a standalone and a great insight into what Aleatha's "darker side" of her writing entails. If you have never read anything by her, this would be the perfect opportunity to see what all the excitement is about with her books. And for those of you who already read her books, this is quick and sexy read to hold you over til her next novel releases.

I won't give you any more information than what the blurb tells you because this is such a short novella. I will tell you that I love how they are trying to save their marriage and in doing so, are willing to air out all their secrets.

It may be a quick read, but it is packed with some hot and steamy scenes along with a twist to keep your held in suspense til the end.

This is how novellas should be written!!

Unexpected is the second stand alone novella in the Vault series featuring Jenn and Paul who were introduced in Unconventional. Jenn and Paul are giving their marriage one last chance. They plan a trip away to an exotic and isolated island. They want to break down their barriers, face their issues and explore their desires.

“ I want to hear you, even when you don't speak.”

Unexpected was certainly that! What a wild ride! It is not for the faint of heart. Jenn and Paul are at a crossroad in their marriage. So this is the last ditch effort to save it. They are both walking a fine line. Trust is the force that is keeping them on it. What will happen when the unexpected occurs???

Limits are tested. Will they survive? There are many twists in the plot. The heat between Jenn and Paul - scorching hot! There are also tender moments shared as well.

The last 25% of the book left me speechless! I had to really reflect on all that Jenn and Paul went through before I had my “Ah ha” moment of clarity. This little novella packs quite a punch! Leaving you totally “Aleatha’d”!

4.5 unexpected stars!

I was given this book for an honest review by Wicked Reads.

Paul and Jenn are at a crossroads. The question is whether or not they can save their marriage. What Paul and Jenn don't know is that they both have been dishonest in their relationship. It's time to lay their cards on the table and figure out whether or not they can save themselves and their relationship.

This is a quick read. I did not read the previous book in this series, but was never lost or didn't know what was happening.

These two have to come together, change their communication and show each other that no matter what, they love each other. I really enjoyed this quick, steamy read.
