Pendant: The Opening Facet

Rate this book
Two years ago, Perry Summers' mother went missing, the apparent victim of a gruesome crime. His father was institutionalized, presumed guilty for her death but maintaining the story that his wife just... disappeared. Finding himself alone in the world, Perry has no delusions that things will get better. When one bad decision triggers a cascade of events that in fact make his life so much worse, Perry has no choice but to run and hide. Secreted away in an old attic, wondering what his life could possibly become, he stumbles across an odd Pendant, and everything around him changes. Perry finds himself on a different version of Earth, imbued with new and unwanted skills, and surrounded by people who make no sense to him. Stumbling through the unfamiliar culture, he is formally “Challenged” to complete tasks to prove his stature. Helping him is Talista Arden, a girl of importance here who seemingly has no reason to find him as interesting as she does. As Perry tries to get through the Challenges and make any sense of a reality he never fully comes to accept, he discovers knowledge which, inexplicably, suggests that his mother might actually still be alive, and that his father’s rantings may have been the truth all along.Pendant is written with a Young Adult vibe but with a complex story to be enjoyed by those seeking a more mature read. Action, fantasy, mystery, angst, and light romance are evened out by a main character rooted in the real world who wonders just as much as the reader how this could possibly be happening. This is the first book in a planned series.
