Stories Behind Verses is a remarkable collection of over a hundred anecdotes, each of which captures a story behind the composition of a Sanskrit verse. Collected over several years from various sources with tireless effort by Shatavadhani Dr. R Ganesh, these stories took the shape of the Kannada book Kavitegondu Kathe. When this was published in 1996, it was the first of its kind. It gained wide popularity among the critics and the laity not only for its riveting episodes but also for its mellifluous writing. This book is an English adaptation of Kavitegondu Kathe by Arjun and Shashi, who have captured the original in both letter and spirit. Witty, romantic, melancholic, provocative, poignant, and profound by turns, Stories Behind Verses will tug at your tendermost strings of feelings and stir your emotions.

What an amazingly beautiful book. Learn something new about the masters and their genius who graced Bharata since centuries but how their legacy is lost to times. Highly recommended to people who love poetry and Rasa; and can read Sanskrit (just to enjoy the sheer beauty in reciting them).
Mindblowing masterpiece of an amazing book. What a treasure trove this turned out to be.This is the English version of the kannada book, Kavitegondu Kathe. I don’t think I have the capability to even fathom rating this book. Many many stars for the genius of Dr. Ganesh.
If you love Samskruta, If you love Poetry, If you love your regional languages, If you love grammar, If you love wit, wisdom & spontaneous genius creativity, You should have this book in your collection ASAP
I am perhaps guilty of not putting enough effort earlier, but the 2nd reading was perhaps the eye opener. This book provides the context, back stories and results of some of the most amazing poetry composed in the era gone by.
Through this book, we get a window into the illustrious past where the land was rich with multiple composers who were polygons & geniuses in their own right. This book also provides an outlook into the society, specially related to women sharing the stage with their male counterparts. This is quite a sharp rebuttal of the lies about non-existence of woman empowerment in olden days.
If you love Samskruta and poetry in regional languages, this book introduces you to many mavericks who had perfected their art in composing across multiple ease with the same elan. Masterpiece is a very small word.
To conclude, I quote a composition from the book, written by H. H. Wilson to Premacandra Vagisa from Golisri Samskruta Pathashala, when the same was being closed due to the onset of English curriculum by William Bentinck.

“As long as India exists, as long as the Himalayas & the Vindhyas stand, So long as Ganga and Godavari flow Will Sanskrit last”
Profound read. Writer knows what he is writing. He knows the language. He doesn't depend on someone else translation like most Indian writers do. Stories Behind Verses is a remarkable collection of over a hundred anecdotes, each of which captures a story behind the composition of a Sanskrit verse. It's a collection of anecdotes or episodes of era which gives you ideas about society or personality. It was fun reading this book. A fine piece of work. This book was originally written in Kannada.
Keep an eye on Shatavadhani R. Ganesh books. He is a living legend. Sadly he is not much known outside Karnataka. Now I have an intention of reading his books in English. Also check out work of Arjun Bharadwaj and Shashi Kiran BN, they are brilliant translators.
