Breaking Ranks: Refusing to Serve in the West Bank and Gaza Strip

In a series of moving and provocative conversations, nine members of the Israeli Defense Force tell why they refused to serve in the West Bank and Gaza. The "Refuseniks" describe their risky moral decision against the background of what is perhaps the most volatile conflict in the world the Israeli-Palestinian struggle. Their individual choices and their collective activism have generated intense debate in Israel and the international community, from the leading Israeli newspaper Ha'Aretz to a segment on 60 Minutes .

In a sociocultural mosaic of the Refusenik movement and the political context in which it arose, these men describe their individual family backgrounds and beliefs. Dedicated to the welfare of their country and its cultural heritage, they outline their concerns for the future of Israel. As they tell their stories of personal struggle, they also raise the disturbing and highly controversial issue of human rights abuses in the occupied territories.

These personal accounts offer new perspectives on some entrenched ideas about the situation in the Middle East. The testimony in Breaking Ranks is essential background for a full understanding of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. About the author

Ronit Chacham was born in Israel in 1950 and studied English literature and philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. She has worked as an editor, has taught drama and puppetry to children and adults, and has developed educational programs. She currently produces and directs street theater events and community theater. Chacham has published over 30 books for children and a novel for adults, as well as plays and TV scripts for children. Her book, Five Wacky Witches (Carnegie Hill Press), won the Israel Museum Prize (1994) and was included in the anthology The Best Children's Books in the World published by Abrams, New York. She's married to historian Amnon Raz-Krakotzkin and they have three children.

If these Israelis can resist, why can’t we?
If these men can wake up from the hypnotic trance of militarized patriotism, why can’t we?
If these people can risk going to prison and facing hysterical hostility, who says we can’t?
If these soldiers can tune into the prophetic summons of interference, what are we waiting for?
If these Israelis show their love for their country precisely by refusing, when are we going to love America?

الكتاب جميل لانسانيته (جنود اسرائيلون نادمون او رافضون لممارسة الجيش الاسرائيلي لكل انواع العنف اليومي غير المبرر -طبعا مبرر للاحتلال، لابقاء المحتل تحت الخوف والسيطرة الدائمة- والقهر الشامل لكل فرد فلسطيني بلا استثناء، كما يناقش دور اجهزة الدولة من موظفيها و شعبها، فنري كيف ان القضاء موالس لعمليات غير قانونية حتي بمنطقهم اذا كانت ضد العرب، كذا يناقش دور التعليم والمقدس في زيادة حالة الكراهية بين اليهود.

الكتاب بيطرح اسئلة عميقة زي المسئولية، وما حدود المشاركة في القتل اليومي، دور التعليم في ازدياد الكراهية، لكن كل دا بطريقة بسيطة جدا. ولا تنسي ان الكتاب مؤلم لانك تري من الداخل (علي لسان جنود) ما يحدث للشعب الفلسطيني.

I recognize only The Palestinian State before the British Mandate, not Israel, nor The occupied Palestinian Territories which was given by the UN to the Palestinians, so the stars is the only for the fact that those army deserters prove our Arab-Islamic point of view that the Israelis are nothing but hypocrites who stole the Palestinian land from it's people, and built a country above another one!

يفضل أن تقرأ هذين الكتابين حتى تفهم القضية الفلسطينية بشكل جيد:
بطلان الأسس التي أقيم عليها وجود إسرائيل
الصراع العربي - الإسرائيلي مئة سؤال وجواب

كتاب "التمرد" عبارة عن مقابلات قدمتها الصحفية اليهودية الإسرائيلية رونيت شاشام مع بعض من انتسب إلى ما يسمى بجيش الدفاع الإسرائيلي، والمقابلات حذفت منها أسئلة الصحفية، وكان الجندي الإسرائيلي يسرد مواقفه ضمن عناوين عديدة.
هؤلاء المنتسبين رفضوا أوامر الخدمة في الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة أي قطاع غزة والضفة الغربية والقدس الشرقية، وهناك فرق بين "فلسطين المحتلة" و "الأراضي الفلسطينية المحتلة" والأولى تمثل رواية كل من يرفض الاعتراف بدولة إسرائيل، والثانية المقصود بها الأراضي التي أعطيت للشعب الفلسطيني من قبل الأمم المتحدة، ثم أتت حرب 1967 واحتل الصهاينة تلك الأراضي، ثم انسحبوا من بعض أجزائها على مدار السنين، أو فرضوا حصارا عليها كما هو الحال في قطاع غزة. لذلك خطأ فادح أن تظن أن هؤلاء الجنود ضد الاحتلال الصهيوني لفلسطين، بل هم ضد مخالفة الأنظمة أو المبادئ.

الذي استفدته:
- هذا الكتاب شهادة من الإسرائيلي ضد الإسرائيلي، يعني من لسانك أدينك.
- من الصهاينة من هو أكثر طغيانا مما نظن، ومنهم من هو أقل طغيانا.
- ما يسمى بجيش الدفاع الإسرائيلي الإجرام متأصل فيه من قبل العلمانيين والمتدينين.
-من الصهاينة من يريد السلام فعلا، يريد أن يتوقف القتال، لا لخوفه على نفسه، بل لأن لديه بعضا من الانسانية المتبقية، وهذا حقيقي ولكنه غريب.
- المجتمع الإسرائيلي منقسم في رأيه حول الفلسطينيين.
