In this second volume in the six-book Homesteaders Series about Norwegian immigrants to America in the 1860s, the Ytterhorn family with their new mother reach Dakota in May and claim land. They break sod, plant crops, and build a log house. They seem to be winning the race to provide sufficiently to survive the harsh winter.
In September, the Olson family arrives from Norway to claim the adjoining plot of land. The Ytterhorns immediately try to help their new neighbors prepare for winter. A third family claims two plots, but they have arrived so late that their preparations are necessarily makeshift.
Despite the uncertainties and harsh conditions, the three families develop a community and seem to be thiving when disease and tragedy strike. By spring, all has changed.
