Mail-Order Brides of the West: Heather (McCutcheon Family Series Book 4)
EVERYTHING HAPPENS FOR A REASON

The story is another great addition to not only the McCutcheon series but also the Mail-Order Brides of the West series. The story will have characters that have been met in each of the series and some new characters but will read well as a stand-alone story too.

The plot will have Heather Stanford as a mail-order bride at the St. Louis Bridal Agency being matched up with Hayden Klinkner of Y Knot, Montana. In reality, Heather isn't as interested in being a bride as she would like to find a job to help out her family in St. Louis. She will agree to the match and leave her family behind and arrive in Y Knot without Hayden showing up to meet her stage. It won't take long for her to become alarmed, and then Ina, Hayden's mother, comes to meet her bring her back to her home.

Arriving with Ina at the lumber mill, and finding chaos with an accident that has seriously injured Mr. Klinkner will have Heather stepping in to help the Deputy and Hayden get Norman inside and then assisting the doctor. She proves she is resourceful and has a level head on her shoulders. She is dismayed at how Hayden treats her, acting as if he has no clue who she is or why she is there.
What a shock to learn that it wasn't Hayden who sent for a mail-order bride, but instead, Ina, and then the phrases in the letter makes more sense. Now, what is Heather to do? Hayden really wasn't planning on marrying anytime soon. Ina is distraught over the accident; Norman is unable to work at the lumber mill, Hayden has the burden of making a deadline on a large order and dealing with a female isn't in his plans, and Heather is a jilted mail-order bride without a clue as to what will happen to her.

Heather once again proves her worth; she lines up multiple jobs in town, makes a deal with the boarding house for reduced rates by helping with the cooking and cleaning, she works with the towns Doctor and does bookkeeping for the mercantile owner. When word gets out that there is a jilted mail-order bride in Y Knot, the letters and offers of marriage start pouring in, to the point that Heather is overwhelmed and refusing to read any of the letters.
I love the letter exchanges between Heather and mail-order bride, Lina, and the face to face interaction with former friend and bride of Chance Holcomb, Evie (book three in this series.) What a shock too when Morgan, one of Heather's older brothers shows up in Y Knot and becomes a hero in himself.

Will Hayden regret his decision to not accept Heather as a bride? She may be from the city of St. Louis, but she isn't pretentious, is a great cook, has a sweet spirit, not afraid of hard work, and not only that, he can't quit thinking about her. Listening to the other men talking about Heather, how they think she is up for grabs doesn't sit well with him, or seeing her going out with Roady either. Is it too late for them? What will it take to win her love? Will life become a guessing game of 'what ifs and if only's? '

The story has a great cast of characters and I the reality of the hardships for large families, with so many mouths to feed that it takes sacrifices to survive. Heather, as the oldest girl, can't find work to help her mother and siblings decides being a mail-order bride is the only other option. Will this be a marriage of convenience or will it be a marriage of love? But first, she has to have a groom who wants to be married to her. Has her heart set on Hayden? Will she accept another or hope and pray that everything will work out?

Moon Over Montana (McCutcheon Family Series Book 5)
THE MARRIAGE OF CHARITY AND BRANDON

The fifth story in the McCutcheon Family Series will have more than one story going on at the same time, but they will intertwine. It will have the return of Charity McCutcheon and Sheriff Brandon Crawford from book two, Texas Twilight. During Charity’s little secret jaunt to Texas to see her brother John, Brandon will follow her there and must rescue her. In the process, she will finally acknowledge that she is in love with him and now they plan to marry immediately upon return to Y Knot.

The story will also bring someone to see Luke that will haunt Flood of the past when Claire was kidnapped by Cheyenne Indians when Matthew and Mark were just little boys. It took Flood a year to find her and bargain to get her away from her Indian husband. Claire is pregnant, but Flood is willing to accept and raise the child, Luke. When a young Indian woman shows up injured, it will be Claire who can communicate with the girl using the Cheyenne's tongue. This is a nightmare all over again for Flood.

The plot of the story will come together with the story of Brandon and Charity declaring their love and planning a wedding. Unhappy about the one month wait that Claire has asked for, she can’t believe that Brandon agreed. What is going on with him? Then this Indian girl, Fox Dancing, has stated that she is the half-sister of her white brother, Luke.

There are two dead miners, which appear to have shot each other, plus a calf that has been poorly shot by an Indian. Now Brandon is assisting the Sheriff of Pine Grove with this case, but things just aren’t adding up. Knowing that an injured Indian girl has shown up at Luke’s home has people ready to accuse her of the crimes. It will take a level-headed Luke and Brandon to work on solving the mysteries. But not everyone is understanding or willing to stay within the legal limits of the law. The tension between the whites and Indians is still prevalent, and it is known that not all Indians have gone to the reservations. This will become a matter of life and death for Fox Dancing.

Fox Dancing isn’t just a female Indian, she has proven herself a warrior, just like a young brave would. She has done a vision quest, wears an amulet that holds her talisman and can track. She isn’t happy that her father has agreed to allow Painted Bear Stone to claim her as his wife by the next moon. She will steal away in the night, with the goal of finding her white half-brother, Luke. But Painted Bear Stone doesn’t just want her as a wife and woman to give him children, he has cared for her since they were young, and he will prove it. The story takes the reader on the journey of Fox Dancing, Painted Bear Stone, Luke McCutcheon, along with his mother, Claire, and the union of Charity and Brandon.

Mail-Order Brides of the West: Kathryn (McCutcheon Family Series Book 6)
THE ONLY WAY TO GO IS FORWARD

The sixth story is another great addition to not only the McCutcheon series but also the Mail-Order Brides of the West series. The story will have characters that have been in each of the series and some new characters introduced but will read well as a stand-alone story too. Once again, a gentleman from Y Knot in the Montana Territory will be matched with one of Mrs. Seymour’s mail-order brides, this time, it will be Kathryn Ford, formerly of Boston, Massachusetts, and Tobit Preece, formerly of Shelbyville, Tennessee.

Kathryn Ford is upset with her father, who has betrothed her to Oscar Scott from the time she was an infant. While growing up with Oscar, she considered him a friend, and more a brother figure, but definitely never a man she wanted to marry. When she refuses to obey her father and marry Oscar, he will cut her out of his will, and so she applied to become a mail-order bride with the St. Louis Bridal Agency. Mrs. Seymour has since found her a suitable match, Tobit Preece, a farmer in Y Knot, Montana. Before she travels to her new life, she will travel from St. Louis back to Boston for a reunion with her family, and then on to her new life in the Montana Territory.

Tobit Preece wants and needs a bride, a wife, a helpmeet for the farm that was his grandfathers, Isaiah Preece, who has deeded it to his grandson. The one thing that Isaiah wants before he dies it to hold a great-grandbaby and Tobit wants to try and make that happen too. When the fiasco of the mail-order bride, Heather, was taking place, Tobit even offered her marriage before she and Hayden worked things out. Tobit writes to Mrs. Seymour and then starts corresponding with Kathryn Ford.

The plot will have Kathryn on her way to Y Knot after her trip to visit her parents one more time. But a mishap, a freak accident will occur where she is standing too close to the stagecoach being loaded, and a travel case will fall hitting her on her head, with the injury will include amnesia. While she will continue the trip to Y Knot, with a doctor on the stage, when she arrives at her destination, she and Tobit can’t legally marry with her unknown memory situation. Then two doctors confer that no one is to try and help her force her memories; they need to come to her naturally. That will leave not only Tobit in a quandary, but also friends and former mail-order brides, Evie and Heather.

The story will have Kathryn, a well-bred lady, learning about farming, animals, and new experiences. She doesn’t remember coming from a life of luxury, servants, and wealth. It will have Evie and Heather wanting to help and also being protective of Kathryn, but also know they can’t push issues and hinder her recovery. It doesn’t help that Isaiah is less than pleasant and goes out of his way to say hurtful things and makes her feel bad, to the point she can’t stay at the Preece farm, and goes to Evie’s house and then onto the Klinker’s house.

“Can’t move forward much if you’re stuck in the past.”

What happens when Oscar Scott learns of Kathryn’s accident and amnesia? He knows of not only his father’s plans but also of Franklin Munson Ford’s plans for them to marry and merge their families, making them even stronger with the bond. He isn’t above traveling to Y Knot and trying to convince her that she had changed her mind about marrying a poor dirt farmer and giving up a life of luxury. Will he be able to interfere and convince Kathryn she planned to return to Boston and marry him and that they are engaged? Will Tobit, Evie, and Heather fight to protect Kathryn from his nefarious plans?

Despite finding most historical Western mail-order bride novels repetitive and redundant, this trilogy of books maintained my interest throughout. Well-written and captivating, the author provided creative themes involving different women-all friends from a single St. Louis source to help populate a small western town with many single men. At times, there were two ongoing scenarios that added to the excitement in addition to the typical trials and tribulations. Well-worth your time if you enjoy this particular genre.

I enjoyed reading all three of the novels. Each one was a little different but with a similar theme and familiar characters. Of course, knowing that there will be a HEA ending helps you get through the struggles. I recommend reading the books in order as there are repeat characters, but it isn't necessary, just a bit of fun.

Fall in love all over again

Just finished this series and it made my heart light. Loved each story and the endings. Each story is a stand alone but is intertwined. This author has created a look into past times that seem very real. Hope you enjoy reading this book as much as I did.

A delightful continuation of the McCutcheons clean romantic western series full of wonderful characters, and engaging, entertaining storylines. While a part of a wonderful series, each story could be read as a standalone novel.

Each of the stories included in this set were interesting and connected to each other. Brandon and Charity. Hayden and Heather, and Kathryn and Tobit, each romance had its trials and heartaches. Each story was most enjoyable.
