What's a superheroine to do when her super soldier ex turns up alive after more than fifteen years?

Lyndsey Daniels doesn't have much time to walk down memory lane before she and Ian Fox find themselves thrown together to investigate the mysterious deaths of ten young men in the Canadian wilderness. How do the hearts of such seemingly normal, healthy men just...stop?

With the hint of an evil spirit in the wind—and a whole lot of butterflies—there's no telling what Lyndsey and Ian are dealing with, including their own extensive baggage. Though sixteen years is a lot of life to live, there's one thing they can't deny: their attraction is as intense as ever. But is it just a spark that will burn itself out, or is it true love bringing them back together? When the force they're hunting turns its sights on them, the leap of faith required far exceeds the powers of either of them. But worrying about their future might be premature because one wrong move and they might not make it out alive.

In Book One of the Butterfly Ops trilogy, Lyndsey and Ian reconnect fifteen years after seeing each other for what each thought was the last time. That the spark is still there is undeniable—but is it enough to get past the secrets and lies that tore them apart the first time around? With old tensions rearing their heads as new challenges arise, what at first seems to be a sure path back to trust and happiness is rockier than it seems.

Note: this is Book One in a serial trilogy. Book Two will be released in Spring 2019; Book Three will be released in early Summer 2019. Books should be read in order.

I had no clue about this book, saw the cover as it was listed on my library’s website and thought why not give it a try. For not having a clue this one turned out pretty good. I liked Lindsey, felt for her when she ran into Ian again, it seemed to throw her. Here is where I’m torn about things. I really liked that Ian and Lindsey had a history, but they way that they acted drove me nuts as often they acted like teenagers. It was only as they actually talked about the past you saw how badly each of them were manipulated by those close to them for the better. Would they have had issues had they not split and forced to stay split, maybe, instead each of them thought the other was their biggest regret, the one that got away.

I was glad when the ones that kept them apart fessed up to their part, glad that at each turn Ian and Lindsey fought to be together again, that they didn’t not ask the hard questions from when they were apart. By the end of the book you get the feeling that they have a real chance at making a good go of it this time around. Of course that only happens if they manage to fight the monsters on their mission, something we will have to wait for the next book to see.

My Review:
I read Jen Doyle's first book and was blown away by her story telling ability. But that book (and every other book she's written since) was contemporary romance, so I had no idea how she would do writing Urban Fantasy/Superhero/Military/Romance. Spoiler alert...she NAILED IT!!

OMG, this book is so good. This world is a paranormal one, but it's unlike anything you've ever read. While there are threads that give it an urban fantasy feel, it definitely has more of a military romantic suspense vibe...you know if military romance had vampires, demons, and real life superheroes in it. Yeah, this book has all of that, but it NEVER has the ethereal quality that you get with most paranormal fiction. This is a world set in the nitty gritty of the military where the military guys have been exploiting and then hunting down the paranormals...like Lyndsey.

Lyndsey is a modern day superhero. Her roots are Amazonian so she's super-strong and super fast. Sixteen years ago, she was in college and completely in love with Ian, an Army guy who was in the same Study as her. They were in love and neither one of them had a clue about what the Study really was. When the reality of all that came out, it tore them apart. Since then, Lyndsey has lived with the reality that Ian died after they had broken up...something that really isn't a reality at all.

In fact, as the story progresses, layers are revealed of what exactly happened then and in the interim and the depths of which both of them were mislead or made incorrect assumptions.

This is a book with a ton of emotion. What's obvious from page one is the depth of feelings between these two. And as the reality of what they went through is revealed, my heart just broke for them over and over again. The hardest thing is that neither one can trust any more. While they're there and together to a certain point, they aren't all-in like they once were. Every revelation is another blow though and it hurts to read. Gah...it was so, so good. The emotion that the author wove into the story was brilliant.

In fact, the whole story and world is brilliant. It's so creative. The author reveals bit by bit and I never once felt confused by this world, although there's so much that isn't explained except in bits and pieces. And every time one of those bits is revealed, it seems like it's a hit to one of the characters. They move forward one pace and then are blown back two more. It's crazy and so intriguing to read. Really an expertly and tightly woven story.

And there's still so much that hasn't been revealed. They haven't even started their joint mission. I have a few suspicions about where the story might go, but I have even more questions about what all happened in the interim between the Study and present day. This first book in the series goes back and forth in time, but unlike a lot of books that have flashbacks, I never resented these for interrupting the story, because every single one gave a glimpse more into how these two people got to be here.

This review is already long, and I haven't even talked about the sizzling hot chemistry between Ian and Lyndsey. I'll just leave it at this...Wow, they are so scorching hot together.

This book was amazing! I NEED the other two books in the series NOW. I highly, highly, highly recommend this one. I LOVED IT!

I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for a voluntary and honest review.

This book is different from any of the books I have read. I would classify it as a urban fantasy/paranormal/military/second chance romance. This book is mainly backstory and the reason for the reunion between Lyndsey and Ian. I'm ready for whatever book two is gonna throw at us.

I understand that this is part of a trilogy, but the pacing of this book really makes me wonder why it needs to be a trilogy at all. It was very slow; the promised mission at the beginning of the book never even happened by the end of this first book. I was never even able to figure out what was "butterfly" about the "butterfly ops" of the series. The teased mission even sounded interesting!

There was a lot of time spent on description and character development and backstory that really didn't need to be spent. The characters were not more compelling for how their backgrounds were revealed (and I didn't find them terribly compelling to begin with). I enjoyed the premise of the main characters being "older" and having a second chance. I enjoyed the idea of superpowers. There are a lot of good ideas in this book; they just aren't fleshed out as well as they could be. A lot of the overdoses of exposition actually leave me with more questions than they answer.

In addition to some issues with story, there were also some pretty glaring character misnamings as typos. (St. John was St. James at one point and then back to St. John again.) These things take me right out of the story.

I really think the series could do with some more editing to catch typos (and improve overall readability) and maybe separate titles for each of the books - I'm guessing the butterfly part of "butterfly ops" comes into play in part 2? Like I said above, this book has a lot of really interesting concepts but it needs to be more tightly woven to really come together.

At the end of the day, this book doesn't do its job as the first in a series because I don't want to keep reading. And that's a shame, because the mission really did seem intriguing!

3rd Person, Dual POV. One of my favourite reads of 2018.

I knew going in that this book would be a hodge-podge of genres.

It's not just paranormal but with an urban fantasy feel and a strong second chance romance storyline.

Our Heroine Lyndsey is a low key superhero. She has preternatural skills, but here are no costumes and definitely no capes!

Our Hero Ian is a widower, single Dad with 4 kids, working for the military in a paranormal special ops division.

There's also a strong "Found Family" vibe going on, that often happens when you have people in life or death situations.

It should have just said "ALL THE THINGS YOU LOVE", it was just missing puppies.

This is a book about 2 grown-ups, they have flaws, they've messed up, there were massive misunderstandings. They've definitely lived their lives between their break up in their early twenties and now in their mid thirties.

There's no pretension that they have all their ish together. Each of them is worried about screwing up their own lives and the lives of those in their immediate orbit if this reconnection goes awry.
I personally enjoy it when Main Characters don't fix everything with one conversation that reconciles their relationship. Even in your mid thirties you're not always going to have the emotional maturity to put all the hurts behind you neatly and move forward. That they have to keep revisiting it feels natural and normal.

There is significant emotional growth for these two characters as they work together to solve these unnatural crimes

Given all the reasons their break up happens, its knock-on effects and where they are today in life, the continual navigation of Ian and Lyndsey's new relationship makes sense.

If I were to aliken this to a TV Series, I'd say; take Wynnona Earp and throw in some Seal Team Six and Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.

Definitely book 1 of 3 in the series. Cannot be read out of order, no conclusion of the romance until book 3.

I have been lucky enough to read all 3 books in the series and hope that this spins out into a longer series, because I would read all of them, given the solid nature of all the secondary Characters.

Butterfly Ops

This is the first book I have read by Jen Doyle, and I look forward to reading many more. Butterfly Ops Book 1 was everything that I look for in a book even though I do not read a lot of paranormal books, I may need to start. This book is paranormal, second chance, and military all in one book (well 3 since this is a series of 3 books). This book I believe is to mostly give the background of Lindsay and Ian. They met in college and were part of a study the military was doing with people with super powers (Lindsay) and trying to build the military folks in the study into people with super powers. Ian is part of the military study and he and Lindsay fall in love and are dating. Things take a bad turn when Ian finds out the study plans to kill off the people with the super powers. Ian wants Lindsay to leave with him, but she turns her back on him. They never see each other or speak again, until 15 or 16 years later, when they bump into each other on the street in Boston, and then end up being in the same meeting a little later, and will be teaming up to find out what is killing people in a national park in Canada that borders the US. Lindsay was quite suprised to see Ian alive, as she thought he had been killed in a helicopter crash years earlier. The chemistry these two have always had is still there, but they need to talk through what happened to them, and what has happened with them in the year between. I am really looking forward to reading books 2 and 3 to see how the rest of this story unfolds. But so far I am really loving Lindsay and Ian, and I can't wait to see how their story keeps unfolding, and what they find that is killing people with no trace. This book captivated me even though it was a bit long, but I felt that we really needed to know this back story to be able to understand what is going to happen in the next two books.

I'm on the fence about this first book. The blurb says that Lyndsey and Ian are reunited as they are hired to go find out why young men are disappearing in the Canadian wilderness. But the character development, backstory, and reunited lovers took the whole book to get through.
Lyndsey Daniels is a super powered woman who was part of a secret project when she met Ian Fox. Because of what she could do, they were injecting other members of the military with her blood to see what would happen. A new breed of vampire/demon hunters. When the project is suddenly canceled, Lyndsey becomes a target for what she know.
Ian Fox is career military. He became part of the project Lyndsey is in and a romance develops. He is also part of a team that is meant to get rid of her. With a big misunderstanding, the two break up and Lyndsey takes off. Neither knows why they broke up. It's 15 years later and Lyndsey sees Ian after believing he was dead. But Ian had a life after Lyndsey that included a wife and kids. She is still in love with him but they both have a lot of baggage to get through.
The book seemed to drag out their relationship problems for the whole book. I found myself skimming. They both need to air their grievances and move on. But that never seemed to happen. Plus nothing about the mission they were about to embark on even got started. With that said, I stuck with the book and am reading the next one. I want to continue with the trilogy. The next book has me reading it more and skimming less. Now things are starting to happen. If you can, stick with it. I feel like it is about to change and things are going to happen.

Lyndsay and Ian had a break up that neither could really figure out totally what happened. That was 15 years ago and she thought he had died in the line of duty. Imagine her surprise when she stumbles upon the ghost of her past. Ian and Lyn have chemistry still but can all the baggage from their past allow them to see if they have a future.

This was my first Jen Doyle book and I am looking forward to reading #2. The author gives us paranormal, military and romance all thrown into to one. I wasn't sure about Lyndsay at first she had to grow on me a bit. Once I got more of her back story I really started liking her. She has had a tough life and has managed to rise above it all. I love a tough woman who can hold her own in the world. I really started to enjoy getting to know Matt and his family as well and hope to see more of them in book 2. Fun, steamy read.

Urban Fantasy Thriller at it’s best. I have to be honest, I am not a huge UF fan, but WOW! Was I blown away. Paranormal with Vampires, Demons, and shifters with a major focus on the special ops and military techniques. This is definitely for a reader who loves the plot of a book and the back and forth from characters with some light romance thrown in. I personally think it was an amazing combination that kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time. I had to know what was going to happen next!
Doyle does a fantastic job of creating a world that is unlike any other I have read about. Between her world building and character development I was gleeful in my reader bubble. Page after page of different situations that pull you in before twisting around with a plot twist! I loved every minute I read it and I can't wait to read more by Ms. Doyal!

Butterfly Ops follows the story of Ian and Lyndsey. Lyndsey has super power strength and Ian is in the military and part of a project where he is given superhuman strength. Ian is part of a project and doesn’t realise the sim is to make him ’super’ or that the purpose is to kill people like Lyndsey, who also happens to be his girlfriend. Things fall apart spectacularly and the book picks up when they run across each other 16 years later. This book gives lots of background to the characters and what has happened in the last 16 years as well as Ian and Lyndsey exploring what is still obviously between them. The 2 must work closely together and with their respective teams to discover what is killing healthy male hikers with no obvious indication. As to the cause of death.

Just to let you know this does end in a cliffhanger since this is book 1 out of 3. Ian and Lindsey have a past. This book pulled me in. It was so intriguing that i couldn't put it down. I wanted to know what happens next. Its been 15 years and these 2 get thrown together.  Lindsay thought Ian died years ago but now they are working on a case together.  These 2 seem to be tongue tied a lot when they are near each other. The chemistry between them doesn't seem to be have lost in all the years. This was a great beginning to the trilogy.  We get to see all taht has gone on when they were together many years ago and what has been going on.  I love the back story. Now i can't wait to read book 2 and see what happens.

Butterfly Ops #1 by Jen Doyle is one of those books that really can’t be typecast. No one genre fits it exactly. You’ve got a little paranormal/super soldier, second chance, and military romance. Add some monsters and secrets, with deep deep hurt, and you’ve got part 1 of The Butterfly Ops Trilogy.

The sudden (almost literal) drop in lap “would you look at that! He’s alive!” Moment was very realistically done. As was the next meeting “damnit he’s in my meeting” fun to read as well. They are thrown together investigating some missing soldiers with peeks of something not quite kosher between their attempts to find out what happened 15 years ago.

Definitely part of a set, and absolutely must be read (and must be read in order!). Full 5 stars.

A character driven book that hookd the reader for book 2

This was a hard book to pin down, I'ts more character driven than action. With a title that suggests a military theme with a paranormal side note. Theres more description of activities in the past than actual fight scenes. Not that i haven't enjoyed the book, and I will check out book 2, with the hope that it will be more action based as the investigation hots up. The relationship between the two main characters ensures that the reader is invested into the continued story and we get to find out more about what happened to break up the couple in the first place.

I would say this is more of a background to the characters book as well as setting the scene for what they will come across when they go out to the forest to investigate things. Be warned this book is pretty wordy, ie there were times I skimmed the sentences but it still didn't distract from the story too much, my only other irk was that I felt at times Lyn was too ditzy/scrambled when I would expect her to have more control of herself due to what she has been through was well as her job. Now that we know the characters, understand some of the angst and conflict between some of them I can't wait to get stuck into the next book and see whats going to happen.

I had a hard time with this book. The main characters really reeled me into the story but it didn’t hold my attention the entire time. Lyndsey Daniels and Ian Fox have a past that you want to know what happened. I really didn’t get a feel for what Lyndsey is or what has been done to her and Ian. Ian is or part of the Military that was called into a job with Lyndsey’s job and that’s the shock of a lifetime for both of them when they start thinking about the past and both did things that weren’t bad but hurt both of them. It’s a sci-fi or fantasy base story. Their relationship is drag out in this book. Since I did enjoy the story I can’t wait for book two.

Wow, let me start by saying this book is nothing like I thought it was going to be. It was so much better. Lyndsey and Ian are the main people in this book. Ian military and Lyndsey is super strong. Yes you heard she is a paranormal that the military are looking for. !5 years ago they were in college and in love and something happened that changed everything in fact she thought she would never see him again. but then 15 years later he shows up. The story goes back and forth and you find out a lot. The author really did a great job with this book. If you like a mixture of military/romance/paranormal and mystery you will love this book.

While the writing was fine, at 400 pages it was overly long and drawn out. I felt the author was over-doing the backstory to save the action for books 2 and 3. This is a paranormal romance (heavy on the romance) with vampires, demons, super-humans, etc. (although we don’t see them in action much here). The heroine was also a bit annoying and immature at times. Not sure if I’m invested enough for book 2, but for those loving paranormal romance, by all means give it a try.

Wow this book was more than I expected, honestly I grabbed it to read only because I've read others books by Jen Doyle and loved them so going in to this one I wasn't up on the entire storyline but it exceeded what I expected. An action packed, second chance romance with a super natural twist. The book was a bit long (wordy) but that okay, I was in the mood for a long book to read. Plenty of twists and mystery to keep you entertained. I can't wait for book 2.

Great story

This was a really great story. I was pulled in from the beginning and just couldn't put it down. I liked all the characters. This book was full of secrets and lies and I couldn't help but flip through the pages just so I could see what was going to happen. I can't wait for the next book, I have to know what is going to happen next.

Amazing!

I can’t wait for book 2! I needed it like yesterday! This book was amazing! I could not put it down. I can’t wait to see what happens with Ian and Lindsey! They are a hot mess with a lot of baggage. I feel like there is also something up with Zach and Matt that I’m missing. Need to figure that out. Definitely looking forward to the next book.

I really enjoyed this book! Jen Doyle is an amazing writer, which you will see when you read the beautifully written words. Once I started this book, I was not able to put it down until I was finished and now I can't wait to get my hands on book 2. Great characters, great story, angst, second chance love, sexiness, mystery and suspense. What more could you ask for??

Butterfly Ops is book 1 in the Butterfly Ops Trilogy by Jen Doyle. This is the first book I have read from this author. I enjoyed the book but paranormal romance is not my normal read. This was well written with lots of mystery and twist and turns that keep you interested. For those who love paranormal romance I would recommend it.

My first read by Jen Doyle, but I'll definitely put the rest of the Butterfly Ops Trilogy on my TBR list. There is alot to dig through here...you have the love/not love story...spanning 15 years. You have some paranormal, government, suspense stuff. Book one takes us through the main characters pasts for the most part...Sexy times to be had as well.

A Good Read

It seemed this book went on forever! Very very wordy. The storyline was great but could have been told in half the space. I will read the next one because I want to know what happens with these two.

Yes, yes, yes! Great first book to this trilogy. I have never read a book by this author and she captivated me from the very beginning. Although the book was a bit lengthy I really enjoyed the back story between the main characters. I can’t wait to read books 2 and 3. Highly recommended.
