The Circle #4

The Circle Origins

Rate this book
Before Lilly and Charlie, there were Michelle and Lalo

Lalo was the love of Michelle’s life. Their story isn’t a fairytale, but it is real. Damaged and broken, Michelle makes mistakes with lasting consequences. Will she make a change for the better, if not for herself, then for her daughter?

Charlie’s first trip to Earth

A chance meeting with an Earthan girl ends up being more significant than Charlie/Silas realizes. He’d met the mother of his One without even knowing.
When Silas returns to his home planet, he follows the life scripted for him by the Sentrian government. He never intended to become a blaspheming rebel and the most dangerous man on Sentria. But then, he never thought he would fall in love, either.

Is Eve short for Evil?
Growing up in poverty on Sentria with few opportunities makes Eve a bitter young woman. She is determined to move up in station and will wreck anyone who gets in her way. An unsuspecting seminary student becomes Eve’s primary target. Hosea is her ticket into the elite world of Sentrian politics. There’s only one problem—Hosea has a One, and it’s not Eve.

**Although this is a prequel, it is recommended to read it as the fourth book in the series.

This review contains mild spoilers.

This is a great addition to the Circle Series. Origins is well-written and has a nice pace. It’s a sci-fi, coming of age novel that also deals with heartache and pain. There are some disturbing issues that happen in the book that I can relate, too.
The story involved 3 main characters that fit together in the greater scheme of things—Michelle, Charlie, and Eve. I like how Charlie meets his One’s mother without either of them knowing it.
Michelle, who is Charlie’s One’s mother dealt with a lot of grief. She found her One, Lalo, only for him to be taken away from her after just a short period of time.
Michelle goes through tragedy after tragedy. I was shocked that she didn’t break completely. She did suffer from depression, but with her family’s support, Michelle didn’t give up.
Life can be tough—a bitch and then you die. Michelle definitely got dealt her fair share of unfairness. Everything happens for reason and sometimes you will never get answers. But I think her daughter Lily saved her. She made life worth fighting for again.

The Origins plot-line goes back and forth between Earth and Sentria. According to this book the Sentrians were involved in the Roswell 1947 crash—a concept that I think added a nice touch. All sci-fi fans have heard about that crash, and most are interested in finding out what really did happen. I, for one, would sure like to know. Origins gives you its take behind the crash.

The Sentrians are very religious beings and are run under more of a dictatorship. They travel back-and-forth to Earth to research the Earthlings. Also, to keep an eye on them since they are so anatomically close to them.
Sentrians only live to be forty years old. They die on their 40th birthday. This is a fact that you learn in The Circle. They do however, live those forty years to the fullest—grasping the best of life.
Charlie is one of the younger Sentrians that goes on missions to Earth due to his father’s line of work. During his in between time on Sentria, he gets caught up in the hooks of Eve. She’s the villain in the Circle Series. I just had to shake my head that even when she was younger, Eve is still a sociopath—she’ll never change. The only thing that she cares about is power and gaining a position the state. And she will literally kill you, if you try to get in her way.
Charlie is smart enough break it off with Eve soon, quickly realizing that she wasn’t his One.
Hosea’s Eve’s next victim. Unfortunately for him, once he realizes who his One is, (not Eve) at the same time, Hosea learns that he’ll never be able to be with her until the afterlife—so sad.
Though Hosea lost his One and will never truly be happy, he realizes that he needed to do God’s bidding. That He had a greater purpose for him.

What I loved most in this book are the connections. Michelle to Charlie. Lilly to Charlie, which there is some foreshadowing about at the end of the book. Eve to Charlie and Hosea. And even Mateo to Lily.
I will admit that I’m glad Mateo got what he deserved. To me, his death was too quick for the hell that he put Michelle through. But what Michelle had to endure made her a stronger person.
Destiny … Fate ... The sole purpose of life. It all begins with the Origins.
