Dalton Andrews has seen it all. After spending a little over ten years with the Denver PD, he’d had enough and joined Wildlife Services, not expecting it to be such an isolating career. When his job takes him on assignment to Crooked Bend, he jumps at the chance to work with actual people again when the town’s sheriff needs to hire a few more deputies. While at his new boss’ wedding reception, he unexpectedly meets a blue-eyed architect that makes his brain go fuzzy.
Collin McKenzie has trust issues. After countless bad experiences, culminating in spending over a year hidden in the closet by his ex, he decided enough was enough. He not only broke up with him, but he moved to a different state to start fresh. He loves working for the Welsh brothers and living in Wyoming puts him closer to his family. He’s sworn off men, but while attending a wedding, he sees a dark-haired man that makes him catch his breath.
After spending an unforgettable night together, Collin mistakenly lumps Dalton in with his past experiences. Things are awkward between them, but the attraction is there and undeniable, so they agree to give it a try. But when Collin’s ex finds him in Wyoming and won’t take no for an answer, Dalton steps up and claims what he wants, Collin. But will he be able to protect the man he’s quickly falling hard for? And will Collin ever trust him enough to let him in?
Protecting My Commitment is the first book in the Sulfur Springs series. This is a Men of Crooked Bend spin off, but it isn’t a requirement that you read that series to enjoy this one. Familiar faces will be seen, but this series takes you off of the ranch and into the lives of those in Sulfur Springs. While each book focus’ on a different couple and may be read as a standalone, you will receive maximum enjoyment reading them in order. Each book contains sexually explicit material between two men and is intended for adults over 18.
I am usually very sceptic about spin-offs from author’s series because more than one tried to milk a theme until it became it’s own horror version. I am very glad this was not the case and Sulfur Springs promises to be an attraction extension of the universe Taylor Rylan created. All the characters and emotions were realistic, scene descriptions very graphic and easy to imagine. A great book for a relaxing read :)
The best thing I can say for this book is at least it seems like some attention was paid to the editing. Too many books I find on kindle unlimited are not edited at all, and are quite frankly an insult to the literary community the world over. This book didn't quite fall into that category, but into the "meh" category, which is the 'I literally just read this and don't remember anything about it' category. Bad books and good books are alike in the sense that they are memorable, at the very least. This is not.
I read about 80% of this before I gave up. Nothing interesting happened for the first half of this book. I don't want to read about characters going to work (unless they have interesting jobs relevant to the plot, like hitmen), or having mundane conversations about who the fuck knows what with uninteresting side character 1, 2 or 3.
The initial conflict between the two main characters was a bit ridiculous. If you want them to be at odds for the sake of drama pick a more interesting reason. MC1 bitches about how he thought MC2 left without saying goodbye the morning after they hooked up, MC2 overhears his rant and is so pissed that he doesn't even want to have an adult conversation with MC1 to clear up any misunderstandings. What are you, five?
I loooove me some drama and angst but this was just silly. I was rolling my eyes at these guys. Not the kind of reaction I want to be having to my MC's.
Anyway, more boring shit I can't remember happened and then all of a sudden these two are living together and are madly in love. This happens A LOT with books like this. Two characters barely know each other, have barely interacted with each other on page, and then suddenly decide they are each others soul mates. Ridiculous. Then they decide, hey let's get married! After knowing each other for like ten minutes. Whaaat. The development didn't feel organic. It felt like an author mashing two people together because this book is a romance and hey, they obviously need to get together so there you go.
This is about the point when I dnf'd the book. I skimmed a bit more but I just couldn't bring myself to care about anything. MC1's ex closeted bf suddenly decides to come out of the closet and stalk MC1 for... reasons. And then decides to KILL either MC1 or MC2. MC2 gets shot protecting MC1 and more drama ensues. Yawn. I'm sure they all lived happily ever after. I had a moment of 'ooh maybe this is turning around' when I thought MC2 had actually died, but oh no he lived and I don't give a fuck.
This plot is nothing new, it's not written particularly well, and it's not interesting. The MC's are not interesting. Some authors can take a worn out, overused plot and make it into something great with interesting characters, sharp/funny/interesting dialogue, and engaging prose. This is not one of those books. So to conclude, MEH is about as accurate a description as I can give this book. While not outright "bad" per se, there is nothing about this that is memorable, nothing that stands apart from the crowd of MM kindle unlimited romance.
* We get a rocky start to our guys romance here in Wyoming. I have read the whole series and loved it, but I read this one last, because of the negative reviews, shame on me. * But, I must say, I thought this story was full of anticipation, and it's a thriller when it gets rolling. I was at the edge of my seat, thinking of which twist was coming, but when it did,, it was exciting. Collin, a blue eyed blonde, is an architect
who has an ex stalking him. His big family jumps into action. Deputy Dalton (on the cover) owns his small ranch
for his German Shepard, Daisy, and his horse, Knight. Dalton wants Collin for more than the one-nighter they had after the wedding. Each man is too sensitive over each word spoken, and certainly need to communicate better.
* When they get situated, they are hot and fiery in their sexy times. The ex is horrible, and then puts a contract out on Collin, so his macho family, and the cops are super alert. Collin finds he's quite attracted to Dalton's cowboy hat and uniform.
I liked these guys, but it isn't the mushy romance I expected, but they are sincere. We get enough glimpses to know they are solid. I have liked this whole series. ENJOY !
This was a wild ride for sure. Between the main characters not being able to have a proper communication with each other for the first half of the book to the crazy (like really freaking crazy) ex and the there wasn't much room for the reader to breath and I would've needed it.
Overall I liked this book, even with some of the reservations and some "what the heck is even happening" moments I had regarding some parts of the story line. There's a decent amount of drama and family issues in this book but I think the balance between them was okay. Not my favorite of Taylors books I had read so far but I am interested to see where this series goes and who comes next.
The narration by Michael Pauley was great and kept me entertained and focused on the storyline. He is a great narrator and has a solid voice especially when voicing several different male characters. I never get lost when trying to figure out who is who and who is talking at the time.
This book is the start of a new series, but it is a very obvious spin-off from the Crooked bend series. If you have not read that series yet, you may be a little confused at times during this book since there are a lot of characters that are mentioned and that we meet who are from those books and its not super clear who they are and where they came from.
But again, overall this book was good, it was structured pretty well and I "mostly" liked the characters. Dalton was kind of an asshole for about the first half of the book and it made for some slightly immature drama between the two main characters. I'm not quite sure where his attitude was coming from or if that was just his natural personality, to treat others like crap without really even getting to know them first. Poor Collin just wants some one to love him and treat him well, but seems to have the worst luck with men. But for all the time that Dalton acts a jerk and treats Collin like crap, all of a sudden theres a 180 in Daltons personality and he cant live without Collin. I think even after the rocky start of their relationship and all their drama, these two guys are pretty perfect for each other.
This ended up being a car wreck kind of read for me. There were several clues very early that problems were afoot, but I just couldn’t look away.
We had forced angst, one-dimensional characters, and stilted dialogue from the beginning. It only got worse from there. By the time we add in the insane insta-love, extreme melodrama, bizarre plot turns, and unexplainable character behavior, it’s definitely a one star book.
At the 50% mark, I knew I absolutely hated the book and could never recommend it. Yet, I continued on right up until we got to the hit man.
I don’t know how the book ends, and while I can almost certainly guess, more importantly, I definitely don’t care.
This was my first Taylor Rylan book but I can guarantee it won't be my last. I really enjoyed the story telling in this book. It was a good blend of drama and romance and packed full of very intriguing secondary characters that will have me looking into the series this was spun off from. The beginning for these two men was a little rocky and they did seem to move really fast once they got their heads above water but that didn't bother me at all. The angst coming from Collin's ex was disturbing as he was more than a little crazy but watching Dalton go into protector mode made me swoon big time. Even though this is a protector trope, there really isn't any on page action but again, I was okay with that. I enjoy reading different type of books and this author is definitely going to be added to my list. Michael Pauley did an outstanding job with the narration which was no surprise as he is awesome at what he does. Very enjoyable listen and story. I will be looking forward to the next in the series to come out on audible!
Michael Pauley always delivers a great performance and I think that this book benefited a lot from it. If it had had a mediocre narrator it would have suffered a lot more. Over all I thought the story was ok and I did enjoy listening. There were several major issues I had with the plot and certain parts of it that just pulled me out of it too much and found it to be too unbelievable and made it difficult for me to be captured by it.
I really wanted to love this story BUT..... This was a first read for me for this author. The story started out great I loved the yin and yang push and pull between the characters even though I felt it was in the middle of a book instead of start of a new story (yah this is a spin off of another series). The chemistry with them was narrated to be there but I couldn't feel it for them. I read to the 62% mark when a stalker was included in the story. The incidents regarding him was ALL narrated and not lived through. I pulled the pin when 3 trained dogs in the house couldn't alert a intruder. Set at a fast pace. An easy book to jump into with the characters I loved but the storyline failed later in the book. Read on KU. Colin 32 yrs had a hot night with a gorgeous man but things didn't go well in the morning. Colin was a architect when his landlord informs him his rental lease is up with 3 weeks spare. Dalton didn't want hookups anymore and esp after the disaster that morning. Dalton a former Wildlife Services and a Police officer. Now a Deputy with the towns Sheriff Department.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Meh. The story was okay, if a little over the top both with improbable extreme reactions of the characters to minor events as well as ridiculous suspense moments that were highly unrealistic. But what really had me almost not finishing this book was the stale emotionless writing style. There is no feeling to this at all, I couldn't get myself to care about anything much that happened here. It seriously lacks descriptions, there is no telling of feelings beyond "he was nervous/sad/happy/whatever", and even the dialogue was completely lifeless like maybe it could happen via text message between uptight work collegues forced together against their will but beeing professional about it. I won't be reading more of this author.
I don't know why, but the relationship between Collin and Dalton simply didn't click for me. They bickered from the beginning and couldn't stand to talk normally with each other. But nonetheless they were crazy for one another. The mood swings between those two, were to negative for my liking. Their romance wasn't realistic, even logical. I found it boring.
I've been a major fan of this author from her first book and they just keep getting better. I love how even with a new series we are still seeing some of the guys we first fell in love with. Of any wait to see where Taylor takes this next.
I’m giving this 3 stars because I read the whole book. There were some errors that threw me off that was annoying but using the word husband for 57 times was what made me want to chuck my Kindle.
Collin McKenzie admits he can be immature. Dalton Andrews admits he can jump to conclusions without all the facts. So, flawed human beings. I like those characters. Ones who have a lot of growth potential in the book. The book begins with a very memorable rant by Collin. Dalton has overheard and to say this makes things awkward is an understatement. This misunderstanding ends the chances of any possible relationship between the two men. Or it might have, but as they both live in a small town and keep meeting each other, the attraction continues to sizzle and, inevitably, they act on it.
Then Collin acts immaturely, Dalton gets upset, and the cycle begins again. Only this time, it’s Collin who’s doing the running. When his ex-boyfriend enters the picture, it’s only natural Dalton, the law enforcement officer, get involved. An interesting solution to the stalker problem doesn’t yield the desired results and more characters becoming enmeshed in the whole mess.
I want to pause here and point out, this is the first book in a series. It was pretty clear from the outset, though, that this series is an offshoot of another one. There are many, many characters (mostly male) who are married, settled and happy. For readers of Ms. Rylan’s books, I’m sure it’s always nice to revisit old friends and watch their maturation and happiness. Occasionally (emphasis on occasionally), I got confused at all the other characters. Also, there were only a couple of female characters. One is the girl who worked in the coffee shop who has a crush on a gay character and another is a vapid nasty selfish woman. There weren’t even any female deputies.
I’m highlighting the lack of good females because this is something I often see in m/m romances and it bothers me. Especially because these are often books written by women and the women in them are reduced to stereotypes or cardboard cut outs. Some of my favourite series have strong female secondary characters and I hope there will be more women in subsequent stories.
The ending was perfect and I did enjoy the book. At times, though, I felt like I wanted more. I wanted to love the book but just couldn’t fall in love with the characters. I blame that on myself and not Ms. Rylan’s book, which I do recommend. I believe (or hope) the next romance will be Collin’s brother Daniel, and I’m looking forward to it.
Finally, Michael Pauley. I LOVE Michael Pauley and always find his narration to be great. Given that this is Ms. Rylan’s first audiobook, all those other male characters from previous books did not have voices and Michael provided distinct ones for all of them.
well....... its been a hot minute since i have DNF'ed a book. This book... i didn't feel any connection between the main characters. and they would OVERREACT to everything.. like for example first chapter, Collin saw that he was alone after hooking up with Dalton, and he immediately starts ranting and turns out Dalton was just in the kitchen making coffee/breakfast, and Dalton hears Collin ranting, and decides that was too much of a reaction, so just leaves instead of talking it out... while yes after one night understandable.
but then a few chapters later, they want to give it another shot, and what happens Dalton says something or does something (i didn't care to remember) and then bam Collin is like "omg i need to go you are an asshole", and then Dalton would say "he is immature" (which is true) and then Collin would leave and they would still be pining for each other... not only that, but Collin would say to his brothers that he is in a sort of relationship after all the failed attempts to even have a full fledge conversation with Dalton...and then they would start the cycle again.. idk at that point i would say its not worth the insanity!
on top of that, they had nicknames of "Backstreet" for Collin since he looks like a boy from a boyband. and "Asshole" for Dalton... cause i guess he is one hahaha. those didn't really come up in a romantic way, it was Dalton being like "your nickname is Backstreet cause you look like Justin Timberlake..." (wrong boyband) and Collin saying "yours is Asshole".. wow the romance is in the air. LOL
idk this book lacked so much emotion or chemistry or anything it, it was like being told a story from a third party but reading it in first person trying to feel the emotional connection between any of the characters but you end up feeling dead inside. hahaha
Also it felt like i jumped in to a middle of a series, but it is the first book, so that was fun.. not haha obviously i will not be continuing, unless completely desperate and knowing that i probably won't like it. haha
I listened to this as an audiobook, and Michael Pauley is a dream narrator for me. His voice is so amazing, and he did really well with this book.
I liked this story. It took me a while to really get into it. Dalton and Collin have one night together, but Collin thinks Dalton left and freaks out. Unfortunately, Dalton sees Collin's freak out session and decides he should just leave. When Collin sees him out again, Dalton won't really give him a chance. Now I can understand this. They met once, didn't go well, and he doesn't want to continue on. But Collin has some kind of guilt or something that makes him want to keep apologizing. And Dalton has some kind of bad attitude that makes him want nothing to do with him. Except that he can't stop thinking about him. I felt like I was watching a yo-yo for a bit there. It didn't make sense, and I really couldn't see how they came together in the beginning.
That said, once they finally got together, they were totally sweet. Yes, I did have to wonder how the heck their relationship was able to move forward so quickly after the yo-yo, but it worked for them. There was some mystery/drama involved, and I liked how it played out.
Great potential for more in this series. Hopefully we can see Collin and Dalton a lot more stable in the future. Don't get me wrong, I believe 100% in their HEA, but they really know so little about each other and how they function together that it would be cool to see them more settled.
I am voluntarily reviewing an ARC provided by LesCourt Author Services
Protecting My Commitment is the first book in the Sulfur Springs series. This series seems to be a spin-off from the Men of Crooked Bend series, which I haven’t read, and although I can definitely tell that some of the characters have more history than is depicted in this book, I never felt confused or lost during the story.
Protecting my Commitment was just an average romance. The characters had some immature relationship issues which seemed a little flimsy to make such a huge plot point, especially in the beginning. I did like the drama with the stalker—it was over the top, but I enjoyed the drama and the protective streak that came out. This is one of those books that hits on different tropes and gives the reader a huge dose of fluff and sass which I found satisfying. I liked this book and it was easy to read and had me interested in the next book in the series.
The audiobook was narrated by Michael Dean who did a fantastic job like always. Michael voiced all the characters wonderfully and gave us a perfect performance. The audiobook production was nicely done and overall I liked the audiobook.
I have been dying to read this book since it came out in July but for some reason other book’s pushed it way back on my TBR, BUT I finally was able to sneak it in and started it last night after reading an ARC that had me sobbing most of the book.
This was lighter in the way that it was about falling in love and saving some one you love. There is action, sexy scene’s, and Family gathering around their own.
Collin has had a troublesome past couple of year’s, but he has stayed strong and moved on. When he meets Dalton it at his friend’s wedding, they go home together but thong’s kinda get rocky with the morning after. Once I got to know Collin’s background some I could understand his reaction the morning after but till then I was a little unsure what kind of man he was gonna turn out to be. He is kind and love’s his family above most other thing’s.
Dalton while being sweet and good at his job he is quick to give up on Collin in the beginning and to someone who hasn’t known Collin long and doesn’t know his background I can see why he would basically blow him off before he could get close and potentially get his heart broken. But once shit starters to fly he is glued to Collin and finally understands where he is coming from.
I love Collin’s family, His brother’s and His cousin’s are so great and bad ass dropping everything just keep Collin safe is to me the definition of family.
Let me start with what I didn't like & what kept this from being a 5 star read for me. Collin wakes up after sleeping with Dalton & finds him gone so he starts bitching about him and saying unflattering things. Well Dalton hadn't left & overhears him & gets angry about it & leaves. The part that I had an issue with is that for the longest time, Dalton won't have an adult conversation with Collin when Collin wants to apologize for what happened. But once we get past the 5 year old pouting, this was a really good read. When the crazy stalker ex pops up & does some really nasty things, Dalton, and Collin's family, go into major protector mode. I will need to go & read the original series that this one is spun from. Michael Pauley did a great job as always narrating this one.
Audio ARC provided by LesCourt Services in exchange for an honest review.
A startling discovery of feeling unloved & a embarrassing secret to treasured & valued and wanting forever with you - Priceless!
Sheriff Dalton meets someone & has one of the best nights of his life and thinks perhaps not just a one night stand? Then he heard Collin ranting & raving made Dalton best feet out of there. Starts a story on a humorous start. Collin literally had 7 brother ( 3 biological & 4 cousins that lost their parent that are like brothers). This is an absolutely incredible series about a pure unconditionally love. A beautiful expression of accept the other as is & not wanting to change anything about them. Supportive/vulnerability & acceptance/evolving and having hurdles that bring them together. It revolves around the three best friends Collin, Trust in and Hawke and the 7 brothers. Awesome seroes! More reviews @my2centsbooklover Thanks
Taylor Rylan is a new to me author. I enjoyed the start to a new series. I need to go back now and read The Men of Crooked Bend series to get to know the characters from that series since these two series are tied together. Collin and Dalton was a great story and it was fun to see them get married earlier in the book which is somewhat different than other books in the romance genre. The only thing I would have liked better was steamier love making scenes which is a personal preference. I do recommend the book as it is fairly low angst and easy read. Looking forward to the next book.
Dalton and Collin’s story was written and narrated well. I absolutely love Michael Pauley’s voice and how he changes it for each character. The dramatic and emotional parts were at times gut wrenching, they were done so beautifully.
Though Dalton and Collin had their ups and downs at the beginning, I was glad the two were able to make up. There’s a twist thrown in that throws the relationship into overdrive and I found it a little rushed.
I still loved the story and found both men to be charming. I enjoyed how involved Collin’s family was and I’d love to know more about Daniel.
This is the first book in The Sulfur Springs Series. This is for the audiobook version. A spellbinding book the writing was good. The plot was entertaining and it was steady throughout the book. I found the story and characters likeable. The characters were developed and thought out. Dalton Andrews and Collin McKenzie are the MC’s of this book. There was humor, friends and family, dogs, miscommunication, an ex, destruction and more in this book. The narration was good it wasn’t monotone and there were different voices for each character. I can recommend this book as a good read and listen. I voluntarily read an advance copy of this book for an honest review.
Absolutely love this story and it's an amazing start to a new series. Collin and Dalton are spectacular together and their chemistry sizzles right from the very beginning no matter how much they try to stay away from one another. Love watching them grow closer little by little as they go through several ups and downs. The narrator did an absolutely AMAZING job with the story and with all of the characters. Love seeing characters from the Men of Crooked Bend series, wish Michael Pauley would narrate those as well. I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.
Sorry but this one just didn't work for me. I understand that this is a spin-off and maybe I should have read the previous series but when an author says it can be read as a standalone then I take their word for it. In this book, there were SO. MANY. CHARACTERS. that I did not have a clue about. So many references to things that obviously happened in the previous series but no way for a reader to get a grip on. Like Collins brothers do things, and rescue people etc but yeah what is there actual profession? And can someone please tell me what backstreet means in terms of a nickname? I may try and read the next book in this series but it won't be right away.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the connection between Dalton and Collin when they finally got their shit together. Due to how Collin’s last relationship ended he lumped Dalton in with him, it didn’t help that they went home with each other after Jacob and Isaac’s wedding so he assumed that it was just a one time thing. Man Collin’s ex is completely insane, with everything he put Collin and Dalton through. I Ioved the connection between Collin and his younger brother Daniel. I’m looking forward to the next book. I’d recommend this book, series and author.
Messy. I found this plot very messy, jumping all over the place it seemed to me ~ doing nothing and then speeding up to 100 for a short period. Then nothing.
MCs (Collin and Dalton) seemed pretty immature - ignoring each other, rejected each other by turn, then suddenly they are . Too fractured to be even vaguely believable.
Narrated by Michael Dean - the biggest plus for this book and probably pulled it up a star for me ;)
I know I have another book by this author on my TBR. I'll get to it sometime, but I won't be in a hurry...
For the whole first half of the book, I kept thinking, I thought this was a story about two grown-ass men, NOT two whiny, uncommunicative teenagers... *headdesk*
Yes, at some point things got better, well not the "showing"... all we got, for the most part, was "telling"... very bland, repetitive "telling".
I know many enjoy this author's writing style, but it's just NOT for me. So, basically, this was almost 300 pages of reading time that I can never get back.
Sidenote: Why would someone own a dang horse and never actually ride it? Not once, in the whole book does Dalton, or anyone else, ride Knight... seriously? UGH!!!
I really LOVED this book. Like really really loved it. I did get aggravated at Dalton and Collin for the first half of the book. Not in an I hate this type of way. It was realistic and while I was aggravated at the choices they kept making I loved it. It made it easier to connect with them. The plot was amazing and I really loved all of the side characters. Some of them are familiar from another of Taylors series. The Men of Crooked Bend.
It was wonderful to get a glimpse of those men I love but I also really loved the new characters and I really hope they all get their own story.
