About the author

Matkari's first work, the one-act play Wedi Manase,was presented in 1955 on All India Radio in Mumbai.His play Pahuni was presented the next year at another venue.

Matkari worked as a columnist for newspapers and magazines in the 1970s. He wrote the column Soneri Savalya n Apale Mahanagar for four years.

Matkari's 98 works thus far include 33 plays, 8 collections of his one-act plays, 18 books of his short stories, 3 novels, a book of poems for children, and 14 plays and three collections of plays for children.His works include Gudha Katha --mysteries—for adults which maintain realism.Matkari wrote a few plays in Indian languages other than Marathi.Many of Matkari's novellas have been adapted for the stage.

He is one of the few authors in Marathi who has not only raised standards of Horror/suspense literature in Marathi, but has also maintained it throughout his life via different novels/plays/collection of stories. No author could be compared to the work that is done.

This is 16th Ratnakar Matkari's book that I've completed. I was looking for this book for a long time as it has high rating here on Goodreads.
I was little disappointed when I saw that 13 out of of the 16 stories from this collection have been taken from his other books. Or it could be the other way around, gotta check the publication dates.
It was also a pleasant surprise when I got to know that in 90s, there was also a series aired based on the stories of this book & it's now available on YouTube!
Coming to stories, I liked stories थांब मी आलोच! & बंध. One showed how the love for his nephew made a man even prolong his death & other portrayed a child who-after his death, came from another realm to tell his mother that it wasn't his father's mistake which took his life. Last few lines of the story were too maudlin.

रत्नाकर मतकरी, ह्यांची जवळ जवळ सगळीच पुस्तकं, लोकप्रिय आहेत. पण मुख्यतः ते, गुढ कथांसाठी जास्त लोकप्रिय लेखक आहेत.
प्रस्तुत पुस्तकाची शैली देखील गुढ कथेची आहे. पुस्तकात एकुण, १६ कथा आहेत. त्यांची नावे मी खाली दिलेली आहेत. त्यामुळे गुढ कथा, suspence story lover वाचक रसिकांसाठी, हे पुस्तक म्हणजे 'आनंदच' आहे.

विचार करा!, तुम्हाला तुमची अंतिम दिवसाची तारीख, समजली, तर? काय कराल? ती तारीख आजची, उद्याची, चार महिन्या नंतरची किंवा अजुन ४०-५० वर्षां नंतरची पण असु शकते. तर अशाच संदर्भात प्रस्तुत कथा आहे.

अप्रतिम कथासंग्रह ! अभद्रपणाही कलात्मकरित्या मांडल्याचे खुप दुर्मिळ उदाहरण म्हणता येईल अशा एकेक कथा यात आहेत. वर मतकरींचे धक्कातंत्र थेट O Henry सारखेच. खुप वर्षांपूर्वी टीव्हीवर यावरील मालीका पाहिल्यापासूनच माझ्या यादीत हे पुस्तक होते, शेवटी वाचण्याचा योग जुळुन आला. मतकरींचे आणखी साहित्य वाचायला हवे नक्कीच.

स्थिर पाणी किती गहिरे असेल सांगता येत नाही, पण मतकरींच्या या कहाण्या, खळाळणाऱ्या पाण्यासारख्या आहेत पण तरीही गहिऱ्या.
