A sweet clean read as stated. It's nice to read a book that doesn't have the Hero as 'dark, brooding and downright rude'.
It started off well but I thought it slipped a bit after that. The characters could have been fleshed out more.Having to get married was the driving force of the novel and this got very repetitive.
The heroine was too much of a weak character for my liking. Also there was too many internal dialogues which went on far too long.
A pleasant start but it turned out not to be my 'cup of tea'.

A beautiful love story

Maria has left the only home she's known to move to England to find a husband before her ill father passes. She stays at the home of her father's best friend's children, Edward and Geogrianna. It is there in their home she finds acceptance of friendship and love. In this story it's hard not to love these characters. This story is a true joy to read.

Such headaches to become a proper lady for the ton.

Great read, it was interesting in the way jealous people treat others. Maria had a lot to contend with trying to fit in and be proper lady. She had great help and in the end staying true to herself and her own sweet nature was her greatest asset.

A lovely, lovely, clean regency romance! Lord Reginald has no clue what real love feels like. Miss Maria Worthing, an unsocialized lady from the islands, understands too well. She also understands that she will never be a proper match for a duke...unless...

This is a most enjoyable book. To my taste, the best of Regency Romance novels are those which concentrate on the persons involved - what they are thinking and feeling, how they interact - rather than involving villains and violence. This book follows that great tradition. I look forward to Ms. Finch's next offering.

Miss Maria Worthing is nineteen and the daughter of a gentleman. She was born and reared on her father's plantation in the Caribbean . She had lost her mother and now was devoted to her father. She has run the household since she was sixteen, helped with the servants, and the plantation. Mr. Alexander Worthing's health was failing and he worried for his daughter. She had been of marriageable age for a time. He wanted to be sure she was taken care of because being a woman meant that she could not inherit anything when he passed on. He decided to write to his childhood best friend the Duke of Foreshire. However the Duke had died from a riding accident. His son Edward Reginald, was now the new Duke. Mr. Worthing corresponded with his old friend's children to secure a place for Maria. He hoped they would help prepare Maria to be introduced to society so that she may find an eligible husband. Edward and his sister Lady Georgiana were more than happy to oblige. They welcomed her warmly. Edward is now five and twenty and needed to get married in order to produce an heir. However, he was not fond of London society. His sister, Lady Georgiana, was two and twenty and has always been Edward's trusted companion. She encourage her brother to not be so harsh towards the ton. But to embrace it for what is was so he could find a wife. With Maria's arrival Georgiana decided that Maria needed quite a bit of assistance in learning to navigate the ton. Georgiana and Edward did their best to help Maria. Edward had grown fond of Maria. He adored her honesty and forthrightness. She was not like the other simpering young ladies in his acquaintance. Maria was a refreshing change. Maria worked hard to make her father proud. She also wanted the approval of Georgiana and Edward. On their first outing Maria's experience was horrible. Edward became angry and was protective of Maria. Georgiana was a comfort to Maria and told her that they needed to double down on her training. Even though there still was uncomfortable situations she continued to have gaff after gaff, Edward always made sure he would dance one dance with her at every ball. He also kept his eye on her to be sure no one put her down. However on evening at a dinner Maria made a very terrible faux pas. She tried to behave and speak just like all the other young women. Edward was furious that she would lower her standards. He scolded her. Maria only wanted to be accepted, to be considered an equal. What Edward said was true and it distress Maria so much that when Georgiana found her she burst into tears. Georgiana gently corrected her and comforted her. At this point Maria knew that she was in love with Edward and now thought she had lost his esteem and respect. There went her chance to show him that she could be the one for him. Now Georgiana had a birds eye view of the situation brewing between Maria and Edward. She was not surprised to find out that Maria had feeling for Edward. Now all she had to do was delicately show Edward his own feelings for Maria. Edward was astonished that he could feel so for Maria. Now he felt awkward around her. Maria perceived his awkwardness as he did not care for her as she did him. Maria set herself on a new course. She would put Edward in the past and get on with the business of finding a husband. She was full of confidence and she became the belle of the ball. Everyone remarked at the change in Maria. Especially the men. Edward found he bereft of her company and was even a little jealous. He finally realized what Georgiana had been saying all along about love. Edward was convinced that he loved Maria and hoped it was not too late for him. Would Maria ever be comfortable in society? Will she find a husband before her father passed away? Would she ever really get over Edward? Would Georgiana and Edwards hard work pay off? Will Georgiana every get married? Will Edward win the hand of Maria or will she belong to another? I really liked this book. It showed the complex nature of navigating London society. What that was like for a nineteen year old innocent in all ways. I could not help but feel Maria's anguish in trying to be accepted. It was easy to identify with Edward's disappointment with society. Georgiana proved to be a gentle soul and she was full of wisdom. She had comforted Maria, taught Maria and guided Edward to his truth. A wonderful read.

A Forthright Courtship, a regency romance story, was an interesting read. The three main characters Maria Worthing arriving from the Caribbean, Lord Edward Reginal, who following his father’s unexpected accident and death is now Duke of Foreshire, and his sister Lady Geogrianna Reginald are well defined. The story starts in the Caribbean at the Worthing’s plantation. Maria knows her father is not well, although he will not admit there is a problem, so she help by running the house, as well as oversee much of the plantation. Because of his poor health Maria’s father had corresponded with an old friend, Lord Reginal (Sr.), in London regarding presenting his daughter during the season so she might find a husband. He worries about his poor health and wants his daughter to have someone to take care of her. Lord Edward’s father had told him about Maria’s arrival so he and Geogianna are expecting her. They know nothing of Maria except that her mother has died, and her father is very ill and hoping she will find someone to marry during the coming London season. They wonder what type of person she is, and what they might need to do to prepare her for the season. That was just some background information. The story is about a young, independent, and kind, but also innocence, unsophisticated and without experience for the culture she was entering. Maria has a very large learning curve to achieve for her new environment but she has the guidance of both Edward and Geogrianna. Yes, Maria finds love – but you need to read the story for those details. I was a little disappointed in the extended epilogue. Geogrianna’s father forbade the suite of her true love because he was beneath her station. I was hoping that since it was known that Georgianna’s love joined the Navy that he would show up; that Edward had contacted him.

A Forthright Counrtship by Fanny Finch is a Regency romance with a little different plot. Maria has lived her entire life on a plantation in the Caribbean with her parents, her father for the past few years after the death of the mother. Now her father believes the time has come for her to return to England an find a husband as he fears his life is coming to an end. He secures her a place with the children of his deceased best friend and they set off. Marie loves her new friends, Edward Reginald, the Duke of Foreshire and his sister, Georgiana but doesn't believe she will ever learn all the rules and fit into London society, despite Georgiana's best effort.

This plot is kind of a twist on the typical London noble falls in love with unlikely young woman. Edward and Georgiana suffered a somewhat cruel upbringing as appearances were everything to their father. This has left the Duke with a our taste in his mouth as well as the fact the every unmarried woman in London is flirting with him in hopes of landing him and becoming his Duchess. The characters are good and there is plenty of fodder for additional books. Maria is a good character, Georgiana is gentle and kinds, and Edward is troubles, as so many dukes are. The only complaint I have is that Finch could have done more complete research. I have never heard that money earned by a man could be entailed if it was not part of an existing estate and flowers were not a part of Regency weddings.

All in all, this was an engaging read. I enjoyed it. You will, too. I recommend it.

I was given a free ARC of this book in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.

How lovely is this regency novel. I can recommend this to all lovers of historical novels or those who want to learn to love a new genre. Maria, our heroine, needs to go all of a sudden to London to find a husband, leaving her safe and beautiful home in the Carribean, where she was born. Her father's health is getting worse and he wants to settle his affairs, especially for Maria's future. All his will go to a male heir as females wouldn't inherit estates or fortunes if dad dies.
London seems at first to be dull of color and big, but Maria is made more than welcome at the home of Edward, Duke of Foreshire, and Georgianne, his sister. The siblings are the children of the late friend of the dad of Maria. the Duke is introducing Maria and his sister into the London society. Maria is falling for the Duke, who is handsome and is teasing her like his sister. Edward is fed up with the simpering misses in the London season who are looking for a rich titled husband. He wants an original lively girl. Maria likes Edward right away and is original enough, but he doesn't seem to see it. It takes a while until there is a romance blossoming between the two of them. There could be a bit more of that earlier in the book. Maria seems a lovely girl, but sometimes I thought her a bit too polite for a sponanous character. Still it was a lovely romance novel, which was an easy read and I wanted to go on reading. It gave a good view of the era as well. Really worth four stars, almost five.

Maria Worthing's father's health is failing and he moves back to England. Maria goes along but is staying with the clildren of an old friend of her fathers. Maria was born and raised in the Caribbean. Duke Edward Reginald and his sister Lady Georgiana are happy to have her and prepare her for London society. They will see to it that she is given a proper introduction. She must find a husband during this season. How will Maria fit in? Will she be accepted? Or will she be made fun of?
The Duke must find a wife so he may produce an heir. He is fed up with the ton and the young ladies who fawn all over him and agree with everything he says. They all want to marry the Duke for his title and money and he knows it. Will the Duke find a wife? Do you think Maria and the Duke could possibly fall in love? After all she is beneath his station..
Georgiana is not looking for a husband. She had a true love and they wanted to get married. He was a in the Navy and her father refused to give his consent. The man wasn't part of London society. She has never gotten over losing him. She picks the fabrics and colors for Maria's gowns, sees to it that Maria learns all the latest dance steps, all the correct table manners, how to properly sit and walk. Will Maria remember everything? Or will she make mistakes? This story is well thought out, and flows nicely. Characters are fleshed out. Get a copy of this book and come along with Maria as she tries to fit in.

I’ve always had a weakness for Regency Romances but only where they are good: well written, historically accurate, suitably romantic and fun. Fanny Finch’s A Forthright Courtship is very (very) gooood indeed. This is, as promised in its subtitle, both “A True Historical Regency” tale and a “Clean and Sweet Romance Novel”, so don’t be looking for high temperature “heat” here, but the romance is definitely nonetheless well done. What makes this story work is both the plot, with its themes of fish out of water (the heroine is not remotely schooled in ways of the ton) and star-crossed lover (lovers taking turns realizing their love and blinding themselves to the opportunity at the wrong times, etc), and the wonderfully crafted characters, not just the leads, honest and forthright Maria Worthing and Edward Reginald, the Duke of Foreshire, but also the supporting characters, most especially Edward’s sister Lady Georgiana who is, quite frankly, spectacular. But for the fact that I’m literally dictating this review to my husband from my hospital bed I could go on and on with praises - the book definitely deserves it. Since I can’t do that I will simply note that the book is most definitely one to read, it is easy to highly recommend. I’m definitely looking forward to the next book in this series.

This is the story of a upperclass English lady brought up, not in the society of London, but on a Caribbean island. Now she is suddenly uprooted from the only home she has ever known, taken back to England to enter London's society for the first time, in order to find a husband during the course of a "season". As friends teach her the intricacies of the rules of society, she lives through successes and suffers failures. In the midst of it all falls in love. Will her love be requited?
I found this to be a light, enjoyable read. Though I was able to anticipate the final outcome, I enjoyed the path taken to the end. I would recommend this to anyone wanting a simple, light reading, clean historical romance. The only reason I gave it 4 stars (not 5) is that I felt the ending was a little "hurried". I would have liked to have more of the sister's final story told, or the story elude to another book to come. I also felt that the extended epilogue should really be part of the epilogue of the story itself and not a separate small book.

Maria is sad because she is leaving her Carribean Island she has known and loved all her life. Her father's health is very bad and he wants Maria to find a husband. He sends Maria to London to live with The Reginalds who are close friends. She meets Edward the Duke of Foreshire. She is immediately attracted to him. He is so handsome and charming but she knows she can not fall for him. His sister Lady Georgianna takes a liking to Maria and tells her everything about London's coming out season. At her first Ball she is Mesmerized by it all. She wanted to dance all night long. After dancing with Edward she knows there is something special happening between them. And Maria is competition to the other ladies in waiting for the Duke of Foreshire !!! 5 Stars from me Fanny Finch. Look forward to more Great Reads.

This is a romantic, sweet and engaging story. Edward is disillusioned, charming, kind and unpretentious. Maria is sweet, forgiving, determined and insecure. Her father asks that Edward and his sister, Georgiana, to host Maria for the season so that she may marry before he dies. The brother and sister throw themselves into helping her, and in turn helping themselves, become comfortable with her new life. Things don't go exactly how anyone planned, women are snarky and cruel to Maria, which makes Edward very protective of her. It seems to everyone else that Edward and Maria are courting, but they are oblivious. They have their ups and downs, mistakes are made by both, and when things come to a head, they both realize their feelings, and that it might be too late. It's a beautiful story of love and angst.

In the Caribbean Maria and her father have to plan to sell and move to London. Her father's health is not good and he wants to be sure everything is settled. She must find a husband. He writes letters back and forth with Edward Reginals, Duke of Foreshire,, whose father was his best friend, and tries to get someone to escort his daughter and the duke's sister, to balls and other activtites.
I loved this story. An isolated young girl gets her first taste of London society and she is not sure she likes it. there are some surprises in this tale. Of course, the descriptions are marvelous. It is written well and is even paced. It also keeps your attention so you can't put it down. There are some sweet moments, loving times, and this is a clean book. So anyone can read it.

After a bit of a slow start, I really liked this book and am glad I stuck with it! A sweet clean read of a naieve girl moving to London after enjoying the freedom of living her entire life in the Caribbean where etiquette and society rules are nonexistent. She's given the task of finding a husband before her ailing father dies. Miscommunication, stress of fitting in amongst the high society, etc., lead to a heartwarming tale. I highly recommend this book! I hope this is the beginning of a series. I want to see Georgiana meet her match! My only complaint is that the young woman on the cover of the book does not match the description of Marie in the book. Not sure why this is done, but I've seen it in other author's books as well.

No Pleasure

I (as the heroine) take no pleasure in being cruel, but must be honest. This could have been a good book; it's premise was sound. It could have been clever; polite (as such) insults are masterful. It was neither. It should have been character-driven; it was a shallow, trite, a mish-mash. The only character of
any interest was left with unresolved issues. To top it off, the
language and sentence structure were basically low 4th grade (says the retired English teacher). I wasted my time on this book -- not much, as I admit to skimming after the first chapter.

Excellent

I received this book free from the author as part of the ARC team. This is my honest review.
What I love about this book is the slowly developing feeling between Maria & the Duke. The back story of Maria & her father was well done. The protocol at the dinners and the balls was well defined. The rudeness of the rival was priceless. Society allowed for the women & men of the Ton to do much for their entertainment. Unfortunately, tearing down someone new was acceptable.
I do recommend this book to anyone who enjoys the Regency Era.

Charming story

I really sweet read with wonderful characters. Maria was sent to live in England from the Caribbean because of her father's ailing health. She's taken under the wing of Edward and his sister to be introduced into society and to find a husband. It was engrossing as Maria discovered how cruel society can be and how she realises she's falling in love with Edward. It was so enjoyable as Edward came to realise his true feelings for Maria. I'd thoroughly recommend this. I voluntarily reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of the book.

Maria comes to England with her father from their plantation, she has never been anywhere else. The children of her fathers best friend agree to sponsor her for a season to find a husband before her father dies and to teach all she needs to know. Sometimes no matter what you do a daisy can't become a rose. Her sponsor the Duke finds her refreshing and honest and while Maria finds the Duke swoon-worthy she knows she is far below him and the most he feels for is an older brothers affection. Read to find out if Maria finds a husband

A delicious story about love. Maria arriving from the Caribbean, meets Edward, now Duke of Foreshire, and his sister Lady Georgiana. Maria father is not well and wants help presenting his daughter during the season so she might find a husband. This story is about a young, independent, and kind girl entering another culture. She has no experience and has to learn about her new environment and also about love with the guidance from Edward and Georgiana. Excellently written, with great characters. So sweet. I received this ARC as a gift and I am voluntarily submitting this review.

I loved the telling of this courtship between Edward and Maria! The steps to the altar are fraught with many chances for a couple to mess up in the England of old and Maria isn't prepared for all the rules of 'polite' society as she prepares for the season of balls and parties ahead of her. She has been in the colonies helping her father run the family plantation following her mother's demise a few years earlier. Now she must learn al the rules, while her ill father settles the family affairs and hopes to get her settled with a suitable match of a husband! A lovely book!!!

Maria Worthing was born and raised on a Caribbean Island. Her father told her he was dying and his property and money would have to go to a distance cousin. He had decided to move to England so Maria could have a season and find a husband. She was going to stay with Edward Reginald, Duke of Foreshire and his sister Georgiana. They taught her what she needed to know to survive the London Season. Both Maria and Edward fall in love with each other though Edward doesn't realize he's in love with Maria. To find out if they realize the truth before it's to late u need to read the book.

Wonderful story of how two people can learn to face society.

This story looks into how two different people learn to cope with their dealings with those in the high society of England. There is the young duke who has such a synical view of society and his bitter disdain of it. Then there is young lady, fresh from the Caribbean, unprepared to face such a judgmental society. How these two help each other and come to appreciate each other makes for an entertaining and lovely story. And the sweet romance was great, too. Must read!

A Fourthright Courtship by Fanny Finch was a delightful surprise it was a story that pulled at your heart and kept you hooked. The characters were quite interesting, a young woman Maria who is in the city to find a husband, she is a sweet girl without a lot of understanding of the ton. He is a Duke of Foreshire he along with his sister try to help Maria understand. But along the way there is some tender feelings this is where the excitement starts. I enjoyed this story, though I was surprised by the incompatibility between the cover image of the protagonist and her description within the book. The plot, itself, deserves 4 stars. However, my enjoyment of it was dampened by the volume of dilemna-driving thoughts and discussions within or between the main characters. They were repeated so often and in such depth that after a short while I began flipping through pages to skip them. Other than the internal dialogue, it reminded me of the Barbara Cartland novels I read long ago.

Maria was raised in the country by her father alone after her Mother's death. When his health fails they must return to England to set his affairs in order in the event of his death. In order for Maria to find a husband and get settled he calls upon the family of his old friend. Will they be able to instruct her on the proper behavior in time for her to insure her future? And what is she to do with her attraction to the son of her father's friend? A nicely entertaining story.
