Welcome to Aurora Falls. Home of platter-sized pancakes, the Northern Lights, and... a lake full of finned immortal warriors in search of their mates. This mountain getaway is full of sexy shimmering secrets just waiting to be revealed…
Cursed to reside in Sapphire Lake until he finds love was never how the warrior, Mansen, pictured his fate. Having a shimmering tail instead of legs wasn’t on his bucket list either. For ages, he’s searched for her, the one who can free him from the water, but came up empty handed. Now, he’s resigned to living as a merman and making his three days a month on land count… in carnal ways. Until he finds a female in his lake that needs rescuing.
Doe doesn’t know her real name. Or where she came from or who she was before the overbearing man fished her from the lake where she was drowning. She only remembers the fear that sent her into the lake in the first place. Fear she can’t explain, yet it’s the only thing that feels real. It and the strange, exciting connection to the man who saved her. But he has secrets she might not be ready to accept and her secrets may be even bigger.
Together Mansen and Doe will have to untangle the mystery surrounding them and Sapphire Lake if they ever want to live free. But are they ready for what they’re about to face. Thrills, spills, and… tails?

I'm a little torn on this one but I got pretty much exactly what I expected...so I'm going with 2.5 rounded up to 3 stars.
Although each of the stories are a little on the short side this series does have a fun premise. These Vikings stumbled across an area of land rich in gems and fertile soil. An earth goddess fell for one of these Vikings and when he betrayed her she put a curse on the whole clan.
This curse is the whole reason my fellow Scientists and I selected this book. We have been researching the mating rituals of the Mer people, specifically, how exactly would the Mer species have sex. We have read some very sketchy offerings in the name of Science, and although this story was not able to answer that ever important question, it wasn't a bad story.
Aurora Falls is a small town with a magic lake and all the locals either buy into the myths and legends or are in on it and help care for the people of the lake that are only able to come to the surface a few nights a month. When we meet our male lead, Mansen, he is waking up and getting ready for his monthly stay on land. *(Technically, yes, there are Mer in this story - male & female, but they are basically shifters because of the curse so when they are on land they are back to having two legs and normal human anatomy. Hence the flaw in our research plan, but also much less... gross? uncomfortable? monster-porny? I'm not sure what word I'm looking for here.) Anyway, the female lead, has arrived at the lake for reasons at the same time Mansen is headed to the surface. He saves her life and then the plot introduces one of my favorite tropey tropes... AMNESIA with a side of fated mates.
Overall, this was a very quick read that has a fun premise for following all of the different characters through the series as they find their true loves.
On to the next ridiculous romp on our quest to get real answers. Such dedication.
Pre-read Review A few of my fellow MacHalo Scientists - Abby and Jilly - will be diving into this one with me on Feb 14.
To be honest, things can only improve from our previous attempts at mermaid romance but I'm still gonna cross my fingers for this one as we continue our Very Scientific Research of how the Mer folk... well... ya know. ;)
This was a little cringey ngl...who tf calls anyone "female" these days lol, I am enjoying the romance but not the way these mermen talk to their mates or whatever, it is NOT sexy.
Setting: Aurora Falls Contemporary Genre: Paranormal romance Mansen is a Viking warrior who, along with his entire clan, was cursed by an Earth goddess hundreds of years ago to spend eternity in Sapphire Lake. The gods of his own people mitigated the curse by allowing them 3 days per month to leave the lake to find their true mate. This time as he is swimming to shore to begin another hopeless 3 days, he finds a woman drowning and saves her. The woman cannot remember anything. Not who she is, where she came from, or where she is going. They call her Doe. She agrees to stay with Mansen while she recovers her memory. But will she remember in time before the danger stalking her catches up? I can’t say this was horrible, but it wasn’t exactly compelling either. The characters are one dimensional and the plot is weak. It wasn’t bad enough to be a DNF, but I had no trouble putting it down either. Overall this is an average read. Got a few hours to kill? There are worse ways to spend your spare time than reading this.
📖 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗼𝗽𝘀𝗶𝘀: Mansen has been cursed to be stuck in a lake, his Viking clan cursed by a witch centuries ago and only able to leave once a month. They can't leave unless they find love. And one night, that loves falls right into Mansen's lake.
🌟 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄: I just feel like this could have been elite, based on the premise, and it truly fell short.
The story was confusing, and the pair didn't have nearly any time to bond besides this mysterious mating mark. There was no talk of real world issues. The future was vague. There was almost 0 worldbuilding. The spice was boring.
A soul-clenching, captivating, mouth-watering romance that I did NOT want to end! I have to confess, Waking The Deep made it IMPOSSIBLE to put the book down. I am in HARD CORE LOVE with Mansen. He is the very definition of a sexy, caring, protective hero and the way he talked and all the caring he showed to Doe made my breath catch in my throat and had my heart melting on the spot. Add in the mystery of Doe and how she ended in the lake and just the right amount of danger, action and suspense and I was a TOTAL goner for this story.
Out of all the Mountain Mermaids stories so far, this one has to be my favorite. The plot was irresistible, the characters are compelling and amazing and the romance was beyond sweet! I am in ABSOLUTE LOVE with this book and I am now following P. Jameson and I can't wait to discover other books by this talented author.
Waking The Deep gets a BEYOND AMAZING FIVE SHIMMERING, GOLDEN STARS!
I have read this author before but this is the first book in the combined author series of Sapphire Lake. I fell in love with Mansen. He was one of the cursed Vikings but wasn't the one who caused the curse. After 500 years of waiting to find his mate and end the curse, he grows tired of waiting. So when he awakes for his three days a month of being on land, he decides to give up and just live his life for all it's worth while he can. But on his way to shore he discovers a female in the water, not breathing. When Doe revives after drowning she doesn't remember who she is or anything about herself. She just knows that her rescuer makes her feel safe. Read to find out about Doe's past and see if she can save Mansen from the curse. I really hope we get a few more stories from this author about a couple of side characters. I encourage any reader who likes paranormal or Mer stories to read this book!
I've read all of P. Jameson's stories up to this one and enjoy her literary worlds. I was excited to read this new series because Mermaids were a new direction for her to write.
Waking the Deep: Mountain Mermaids (Sapphire Lake) series is book #1 of 19 novellas/novels. The series is created by an assortment of authors. This first book is written by P. Jameson and while it is short and fast paced it provides a bit of the history and whets your appetite/create further interest to delve deeper into the series.
I gave it four out of five stars because while I enjoyed the story there wasn't a lot of "meat" or descriptive details to the plot. I realize that the storyline had to be fast paced for reasons that are integral to the story but it just seemed lacking in parts. Still a great read and I can't wait to read the remaining books of the series.
Mansen is waking up from his sleep under the water. He only has three days to find his mate. As he is cussing out the Gods and Tamsin for this curse he sees human legs under the water. Also she's not breathing something inside him wants to save her and be with her. Could she be the One. When she is saved by Mansen she doesn't know her name or her past so everyone Calls her Doe. One night while sleeping she has a dream of a bad man that wants to kill her and she's scared. Can Mansen truly save her from this unknown Stranger? Great read.
It was amazing! Doe was running from a stalker and decided that the only way to be free of him was to end it all. Jumping off the falls at Sapphire Lake to her death only to awaken to her Destiny, the Mer have been cursed to the bottom of the lake until that day they find their mate. Mansen has given up on finding a mate after 500 years in the lake and only 3 days on land each moon cycle. My new favorite series!
I bought the box with the three books of the series and the prequel with the whole tale about the curse. I loved the characters and the townsfolk, how they help each other and support one another. The ending was a bit confuse for me, with a lot of things happening at the same time, and I still don’t know Doe real name (that was really weird for me) but I really enjoyed the plot and how the story developed. Can’t wait to read the other two books!
This story was different from this authors “normal” ones. It wasn’t as dark and hard as hers tend to be, though still full of love and light. It had some endearingly quirky characters and a completely captivating story that held my attention from the very beginning. I seriously hope to read more about Sapphire Lake from her!
I am absolutely in love with this book. Fan-freaking-tastic! Love the back story of how the Mer came to be, love the characters, love the little town, loved everything. I started with P. Js book because she is my favorite author and she did not disappoint, but now i need to read them all. Love this story so much! Forever fan!
A collaboration between this author and four others. Each concentrating on their own story that centres around a town and mermen and breaking an ages long curse with true love.
Great premise but as with most novellas, it felt a little rushed and I was left wanting more connection between the characters. .
I enjoyed this story and how it all played out but felt that we were not given a clear history about Doe and who she was and what her powers were. Doe is stalked for YEARS, has lived many aliases, yet we know no more about why she was stalked at the end than we do at the beginning. I hate unanswered questions.
This isn't like any other books by this author I have read. I love the story of the merfolks of Sapphire lake. Doe and Mansen's story has its hurdles but they overcome them together and break the curse. It is a sweet, romantic and sexy love story. I will definitely read more books in the series.
Awesome! I have been trying to find mermaid/man tails (see what I did there) for a long time, but all the ones I have found have been cheesy. This book is amazing! I can’t wait to read the others!
This was a fast easy read. I enjoyed this book. It was great being able to see this town and world created by this wonderful group of authors. PJ's take on this world is intriguing and fun.
I've loved every book I've read by P. Jameson and have never been disappointed, until now. This book was a hard one to read. The story didn't flow well and there were too many errors. Definitely needs a new editor.
Short, long, funny or heart wrenching, P. Jameson is an author that somehow manages to rip emotions out of me with every story she writes. She can make me laugh and cry practically on the same page, while I'm looking over my shoulder and jumping at shadows. Wonderfully talented.
A bit different than what we have seen from P. Jameson, but still absolutely brilliant!! True love wins again in this modern day fairy tale! Now if I could just find my own merman!!
Great story! I love that the mer people were mostly men. A very unique tale. Strong, protective and cursed. These guys are just looking for love. The catch, they only get there days a month to look.
Although it was a little confusing when I first started the book, things were rolled out and explain in a very logical manner. I absolutely love the characters, the setting and I think this is going to be a great series for me. One that I would really like to reread!
A curse to break, a mystery to solve and true love to find. This is the first book I have read by this author. Very unique which I really enjoyed. Definitely will be reading more.
I've read several P. Jameson series and loved them all. Didn't know I missed this lovely one about merpeople! I wish the lake and town in the story were somewhere *I* could move to!
This story was a great start to the series. Mansen and Doe are so adorable together. I'm excited to know what happens next in this amazing tale about merfolk.
Good novella from PJ. The chemistry and pacing was solid. I wanted more background on how Doe ended up in her situation. And I wanted Jase and Vada’s story.
