Cloud Spotting + Fun + Be Yourself + STEM = Perfect! When my children were little we would lie on the grass and look for shapes in clouds. This would have been such a fun book to have then. Lola is the perfect companion to a fun Saturday of cloud-spotting in the park. There’s even a little STEM in the back. And the artwork is simply breathtaking!

LOLA SHAPES THE SKY is a superbly illustrated story that encourages one’s imagination to soar. The little cloud girl, Lola, serves as an example for kids to find their own way and to be unique instead of conforming to expectations. A short back matter teaches readers a bit about clouds for a good STEM tie-in.

Lola is a cloud who thinks differently: Why should clouds only make weather when they can make shapes too? And with that unique idea, Lola sets out to change the sky.

This is a lovely picture book with fantastical artwork and a sweet story that shows how independent thinking can lead to positive change. In its unique perspective, it builds upon the lost art of sitting beneath the sky and watching for shapes in the clouds. I trust this book will inspire children to slow down and look up.

In addition, there is a lovely summary of different cloud types in the back matter. Any budding meteorologist will enjoy learning about the names of different types of clouds.

Readers that enjoy looking up at the sky and finding shapes in the clouds will enjoy reading this lovely picture book. Gorgeous artwork helps tell the story of a young cloud with an independent, artistic spirit who loves to make intricate shapes instead of weather. She gets a lot of grief from Thor, who insists that clouds are for making shade, rain, and snow and NOT shapes. But when she gets tons of encouragement from the folks on the ground, the other clouds start making shapes, too. This might be a fun way to encourage creativity in young readers. It might be fun to make cloud shapes as an art project or write another story from the point of view of something in nature.

The other clouds make shade and rain and snow. They have a very important purpose, and it’s always been that way. But try as she might, all Lola can make is shapes. Is she the worst cloud ever? Poor Lola! You’ll have to read the book to find out if Lola can prove her skills have value too. And be sure to peek at the last page to learn more about clouds. Wendy Greenley’s lovely text and Paolo Domeniconi’s beautiful illustrations are the perfect match in this book that encourages creativity and staying true to yourself.

Lola won't be bullied into only being a storm cloud! She wants to make pretty shapes and awe the people. Bonus: There are facts about clouds in the end.

This beautifully illustrated picture book is a mix of fantasy, humor, and a modern pourquoi - how did we get so many different cloud shapes. The story will appeal to the imaginative child, the young artist, the nature observer, and the weather watcher. Excellent story time read for preschool through 2nd grade. My grandchild found never ending inspiration in creating creatures inspired by the cloud shapes. This book will encourage one's imagination and is a fun springboard to introducing a unit on clouds and weather. Plus Thor is mentioned! Another plus with mythology being so popular again thanks to Rick Riordon and other fantasy writers!

LOLA SHAPES THE SKY is the story of "one-of-a-kind" Lola, a cloud that relishes forming beautiful and imaginative shapes (e.g., a snake, a lion, the Mona Lisa (!), a dolphin, and a "two-headed kangasaurus"). Head cloud Thor (a real meanie for most of the book) scolds her, claiming clouds "make weather, not shapes!" By the end of the tale, though, Lola has convinced Thor et al. that clouds can do both.

A book to get lost in--the story is an ode to free spirits, and the illustrations are exquisite. Contains a page of back matter about clouds.

What a magnificent premise: Not only a cloud named Lola but a cloud who makes shapes. Even though Thor thunders, "Clouds make weather, not shapes."

And later, "You're the worst cloud ever."

Will there ever be a happy ending? Definitely.

GIVING CREDIT WHERE CREDIT IS DUE

Author Wendy Greenley has developed an amazing story, unique and helpful for nourishing both independence and imagination in young readers.

As for artist Paolo Domeniconi, could this book have been given more perfect illustrations? I doubt it. Sky art at its finest!

I love children's books and "Lola Shapes the Sky" does not disappoint. The theme of acceptance that this book so beautifully tells is done in a perfect way for kids to relate to. The illustrations are gorgeous and the author even added a section at the end of the book called All about Clouds for kids to learn about. This book will be finding its way to the library at Ronald McDonald House so any child who picks up this book will feel comforted by its message.

The unique gift that Lola possesses of making art: clouds shaped like anything possible ~ including a Mona Lisa shaped cloud! ~ is frowned on by mythological beings Thor and Cyrus, but Lola soon inspires other with her gorgeous shaped cloud-art. Even after Thor reprimands, "Shape up, Lola" reminding her of her obligation to make whether not art, Lola realized that although she hadn't made rain or snow or a shade, perhaps she was not, "the worst cloud ever".

My daughter adores this book! One of our favorite family activities is searching for shapes in the clouds. In LOLA SHAPES THE SKY, Lola is a cloud who prefers to be a snake or a dolphin or a ballerina instead of making weather like all the other clouds. The lyrical language and magical illustrations are certain to inspire awe and wonder in this picture book about being true to yourself.
