It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be

This short and inspiring biography of JK Rowling, the writer who made kids fall in love with reading again, is well-researched and beautifully illustrated in an original paper-cut style. It gave me a much better idea of the writer’s background, tenacity, determination and love of writing. I didn’t know about her mother’s MS illness and the profound effect it must have had on her family. I loved her words on the importance of failure which can help you strip away the inessential. I think a lot of children will relate to her story of not being accepted into the university of her choice due to her less than perfect academic record.
The colour scheme and the illustrations in this book are just amazing and are so in tune with the text. I also loved the way JK Rowling’s quotes became marvellous word art.

Fans of Harry Potter will be delighted, but I think this book has some valuable life lessons to offer to every reader.

‘A little girl named Alice approves, so we’re going to move forward with your book,’ he told Jo.
‘But don’t quit your day job. There just isn’t a lot of money in children’s book publishing I’m afraid.’

I think that falls into the category of Famous Last Words.

J.K. Rowling needs no introduction to readers around the world. Or at least her most famous protagonist doesn’t: Harry Potter, boy wizard. This is an excellent addition to the Work It Girl Series about successful women who’ve persevered against all kinds of obstacles to achieve what they set out to do. In J.K.’s case, one obstacle was not using her real name, Joanne, but changing it to initials, since the publisher thought it would be a book for boys.

First, we are introduced to her childhood and her passion for stories and reading to her sister, her reluctant audience! She became obsessed with writing when she fell in love with Jessica Mitford’s Hons and Rebels, but she was never a good student. Her teachers recognised her potential, but Jo just wouldn’t live up to it.

Young Jo Rowling, ‘hiding’ in class

We are taken through her life, her mother’s illness (MS), her lacklustre university days, and her early jobs, commuting by train. All the while, she’s had a character and a story simmering away in her mind, but so far, it’s been another unrealised potential. But time on the train set her to daydreaming about this kid.

Perhaps some inspiration came from the train journey.

She began working on her story and writing, but she told absolutely nobody about it. She kept it to herself, worried that if she were teased, she’d quit.

Jo, dreaming of broomsticks and wizards!

She became so engrossed in her story, that the train became her haven. She loved her work at Amnesty International, but the train was her private office.

“She couldn’t wait to get to the train. The story was exploding from her brain onto the page. She couldn’t write fast enough to get everything down.”

The clever illustrations are all made of paper, except for a couple of photos of Jo herself. I liked this one on the train.

Photograph of Jo Rowling on the train

We are shown her moving to Portugal, marrying, having a baby, divorcing, and returning broke to live with her sister in Scotland. Baby Jessica (named for Jessica Mitford, her inspiration), was a poor sleeper, but would finally doze happily in a coffee shop, so Jo snatched what time she could to write. This is the story most of us know – the now-famous J.K. Rowling writing in a coffee shop with a fractious baby dozing in her pram. So much for needing a special studio!

Jo at work in her ‘office’ with Jessica sleeping (we hope) in her pram

“Then, one rainy night in London, the manuscript landed in the hands of a man named Barry Cunningham at Bloomsbury. He read it once, then again. He loved the writing but he knew he needed the intended audience to get it as well. Wizards? Hagrid? Muggles? The Mirror of Erised?”

Guess which expert he asked? His little girl! He gave her a chapter, and she was so excited that it confirmed what he already knew. And did you notice something? She was a little girl, not a little boy, and she loved it!

Barry Cunningham and his daughter Alice, rejoicing

I could stop here, and say the rest is history, but I’d be doing a disservice to the widespread appeal of Harry and his friends. People of all ages in all countries have enjoyed their adventures, including me.

I was buying one of the early books for a granddaughter and I mentioned to the cashier that I would be borrowing it, as would my daughter, and the young cashier said she and her mum and grandma all shared it too! Note again, we are all females as well. So much for boys’ own adventures, eh?

Some of the people who queue for ages for books and films

Jo Rowling now addresses audiences and students, encouraging them as she would have encouraged herself.

‘I would tell my 21-year-old self that personal happiness lies in knowing that life is not a checklist ...’ she told the students. ‘Your qualifications are not your life ... Life is difficult, and complicated, and beyond anyone’s total control.’

What a writer, what a woman, what a role model. She’s not forgotten her Amnesty and social justice roots either. She’s given away a tremendous amount of her wealth and founded a neurological medical centre in honour of her mother.

I think both the author and illustrator of this book have done a great job of bringing Rowling’s story to life with a hope of encouraging youngsters to have a go, find your passion, follow your dream.

I was thrilled to receive an advanced copy of J.K. Rowling by Caroline Moss today. Thank you to Netgalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Frances Lincoln Childrens for the opportunity to read and review this book.

J.K. Rowling is part of a new series called, "Work It, Girl", which highlights influential and trailblazing women. I had the extreme pleasure to read this edition and I cannot say enough good things about it. This would be a perfect book for any young reader (fan of Harry Potter or not). This biography had fabulous illustrations and graphic designs, which highlighted influential quotes from Jo.

The lessons Jo's life have in it are what our children need to hear. Our lives will not be perfect (no matter how hard we try) and failure is inevitable. It is what we do with that failure that sets us apart and teaches us just who we can be. Another valuable lesson taught is to be humble and make sure to give back to our communities and causes we believe in once we are able to.

I can't wait to buy this for my daughter and nieces to add to their libraries!

I enjoy short biographies like this which, although they can be read in around half an hour, provide a lot of food for thought. Here, there is a great deal of inspiring material, and the focus and determination which J.K. Rowling had when working on her infamous Harry Potter series are at the forefront. I wasn't overly enamoured with Moss' writing, as it sometimes felt a little loose, and there are a few colloquialisms which have been used, I felt, unnecessarily. However, the papercut-style illustrations, and the use of colour within them, are a real triumph, and the book does come together nicely.

The ARC of this book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"Work it, girl" is a new series of empowering biographies featuring modern women.
These biographies are short yet detailed: that’s because they’re books for children, so it’s totally understandable.
I think they are a very smart and wonderful way to introduce little children to such important figures.
This one is about J.K. Rowling, one of most influential women in the literary (and not only) world.
Here, we follow her life since she was a little avid reader 'till her success thanks to the "Harry Potter"series.
I'm a potterhead and I'll always be, but I have to admit that I knew little about Rowling's life. So, this book was definetely a good way to know more about this incredible way in an entertaining way thanks to the writing style and the amazing illustrations.
Despite of all the difficulties, she never gave up and kept fighting for her dream to become a writer. I think reading about her resilience may have a good influence on kids, and also adults.

I wanted to feel a bit of inspiration and hope so I decided to pick this book up at the bookstore.
It gave me what I needed. Rowling is indeed such an inspiring individual and I will forever appreciate her for her endurance and for giving us Harry Potter.
Also, let me tell you, Sinem Erkas' illustrations were mesmerizing!

While there are parts of this book that I really enjoyed, I found definite problems in other areas.

Rather than simply being a biography, the book aims to be inspirational... and it's in this area that it's at its weakest. There are confusing mixed messages, such as "failure is good"... while simultaneously telling kids to work hard so they won't fail. (This made me wonder if we would've even had Harry Potter if Rowling had gotten into Oxford when she was a young adult. Her life might have gone in an entirely different direction!) I was also confused by the emphasis put on university education for a writing career. There are plenty of authors who haven't gotten a degree, so I don't know why this book makes it sound like Rowling couldn't have written Harry Potter if she hadn't gone to university.

The writing is definitely weak in spots. It mangles some sayings, leaves out words so that the meaning of the sentence is different, and drops sentence fragments here and there. The book also refers to MS as a "muscular disease", when it's not; it's neurological.

What I did enjoy about this book were the layout and illustrations. The pages of text are interspersed with illustrated pages of quotes. The pictures themselves are done with cut paper in a limited colour palette (orange, yellow, blue, purple, brown, black, and white), which gives the book a really unique look. I also thought Chapter 9 ¾ was a cute touch.

So this was a bit mixed for me. If it had stuck to the facts rather than trying to make this more of an inspirational title (the "key lessons" bit at the back was unnecessary), I might have liked this one more.

I love how women's histories are being made available to young readers. When I was in sixth grade I ate through the biography section of our small school library. (It was two book cases, and I must have read nearly every one of those books. It is so inspiring to find out where people came from.

This book is marvelous. Short chapters. Large pictures, interspersed with things that happened to her in her life.

A delightful look at JK Rowlings life. Very easy, and a delight to read.

This was such a fun read even though i already knew a bit about Rowling's life and childhood. The illustrations were absolutely beautiful and loved the quote pages! I even screenshotted a few in my ipad so i can use them as backgrounds :) As it was mainly factual, it was more like informative, not so much of gripping etc. However, it was still an inspiring read and her story gave me so much more will and motivation :)

This is an illustrated memoir of J.K.Rowling aimed at inspiring a younger generation of trail blazers to work hard and forge their own magical futures. The book traces Joanne’s journey from a tiny tot to a not-so-ambitious teenager to a financially destitute single-mother to a dedicated writer who went on to become a living legend in the literary world.

Beautiful paper-cut illustrations trace her life story and the book is generously peppered with Rowling’s inspirational quotes. I bought this book and have already read it twice while getting a tad emotional as I read the bit where a dead broke Jo was sitting in a train and dreaming about her newest idea – a fantasy story revolving around a boy wizard . I will never ever, EVER stop raving about how her words shaped my imagination and continue to inspire me to this day.

Highly recommended for Potterheads and any other young soul on the brink of chasing their dreams with hope, hard work and faith.

“It is our choices, Harry, that show what we truly are, far more than our abilities” If only this woman, who I used to admire, with SO MUCH power and potential to change the world, would use her words for good instead of continuing to spew anti-trans rhetoric.

I really love the idea and purpose behind the book J. K. Rowling by Caroline Moss and illustrated by Sinam Erkas. It's an illustrated biography detailing pieces of J. K. Rowling's life and her journey toward becoming a published author and one of the most influential people in the world. Her words have reached billions and her story is deeply loved by a great many people. And Rowling began her journey much like many others had, as a young person with a love of books and a love for writing. Achieving her dream was not something that was presented to her nor was it easily achieved.

But the big takeaway from this small children's chapter book is the fact that it tells young writers to never give up on their dreams of becoming an author. And, even more, it sends the message that, if you work at your dream and don't let hardships keep you from it, you can achieve great things. And I think this is an important thing for kids to realize. Dreams don't land in everyone's laps and it really does come down to putting in the time and the effort to get yourself there.

One of the things I loved about this book was that it included quotes from J. K. Rowling, herself. Peppered throughout the illustrations and in between the pages of text are large print quotes from interviews and the Harry Potter novels themselves. I think this is an incredible biography for kids to read, especially as it goes over the life and achievements of a woman who is likely to be or have been an incredible influence on their lives due to the widespread popularity of Harry Potter. It's a great way to motivate young writers and introduce the concept of biographies to younger kids. And while I would never say that J. K. Rowling is a perfect person and I am very aware of some of the faults for which she has been criticized, I do deeply appreciate this book and what it offers to young writers and aspiring authors.

A short biography of J.K. Rowling's life in around 50 pages. With illustrations that were eye-catching and beautiful. It seemed less of a way to "Boss the Bestsellers List" than a good guide to life. Either way, I liked it overall, I did have some doubts about a few of the statements though. For instance, I know J.K. tried hard in primer school because she had a teacher with a seating system which meant that when J.K. got moved to the top of the class her friend got moved to the dummy chair. (BBC's A Year in the Life of J.K. Rowling)

The only real thing I found actual fault with was terminology. I understood quite quickly that this was written in American English, which I am not opposed, but I found it distracting to have something described in UK English and mentioned further on in US English. e.g. Primary school, secondary school then transposed with Kindergarten and High school. I would have preferred to stick to one or the other so that the text would flow better.

In the end, I would say as a 32 year old I would be quite happy to buy this. for..... myself. As a massive Potterhead I would love to add this to my collection. I could put it on a bookshelf and prop it open on a quote I'm in the mood for.

Well worth a read regardless of age. I would give this 5 stars except for the inconsistency of language. Off to Gringotts to get the gallons to buy this.

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to Net Galley and the publisher.

J.K. Rowling, author of the hit book series Harry Potter, is a household name around the world. From children to adults almost everyone has read the books or seen the movies. But how much do most readers really know about the author behind the title; the woman behind the author?

J.K. Rowling: Boss the Bestseller List Like is an inspiring short non-fiction book about the life of Harry Potter author Joanne Kathleen Rowling or Jo is she is referred to in the book. It is an easy read that covers Rowling's life from childhood to post Harry Potter in a way that proves to be motivational.

The eye-catching graphics add to the story and coupled with some of J.K. Rowling's most inspiring quotes there are pages that look like they should be posters on a J.K. Rowling or even a classroom motivation feature wall.

J.K. Rowling: Boss the Bestseller List Like is a book that should be included in all school libraries and I can't wait to read similar books on other inspirational role models from the same series.

I’ve always been a huge fan of J.K. Rowling. I have fond memories of reading the first Harry Potter books with my dad when they first came out.

Her life story is a huge inspiration to me, as a writer. I was familiar with a lot of her story, but I still found this book fascinating. Jo created her own success by working hard at what she enjoyed doing. She wrote when she had time, including while her daughter was napping. She continued to work hard even after she became successful. She also never forgot her humble beginnings, by giving back to those in need.

The books in this series are beautiful. I love the creative graphics. The images look like they are created with layered pieces of paper. There are many pages just made up of just pictures, with short quotes from J.K. Rowling.

I love this series! There are currently two books, one about Oprah Winfrey and the other about J.K. Rowling. I can’t wait to see what other inspirational women are featured in this series.

'Work It, Girl: J.K. Rowling' by Caroline Moss is part of a new series made to help inspire young women. I'm neither young, nor a woman, and I found it very inspiring.

The story of JK Rowling, or Jo as she is referred to here, is one I was familiar with. Here it is presented along with quotes from Jo, and shows her determination to create. The inspiration for Harry Potter is discussed along with how long the story stayed with her. At one point, she quits a job with a very long commute to keep working on the series that would make her famous. The book finishes with 10 takeaways from the life of J.K. Rowling, like 'If you work hard now, it will pay off later' and 'Give back!'

I found this a very inspiring read for younger (and older readers). The book is filled with really nice papercut illustrations, and the quotes add a nice touch to reinforce the message of the book.

One of at least two books in a series of biographies about famous, modern women. Moss's writing is conversational, and she draws the reader right in to the early of life of Jo Rowling. Readers will feel a connection with Jo and her struggles, and finally her successes. Short chapters are interspersed with quotes by Jo, and the colorful paper collages by Sinem Erkas are outstanding; adding interest, color and depth to the story. End matter includes "10 Key Lesson from JK Rowling's Life" as well as questions to answer, and further reading. I hope to see more in this outstanding series, recommended gr. 4-9.

Thank you to my sister for my birthday present!
I read this book before bed, it was a quick read as it is aimed at a younger audience but I loved it!
Such an interesting read, describing how JK Rowling came to be one of the most successful authors in the world, but in a more fascinating way, with beautiful animations!
An interesting read for any JK Rowling fan or for a young reader to learn about her!
Whatever your views on JK Rowling she is still an amazing author and created the most magical wizarding world.

I picked this book up because it looked cute and because it was about one of my favourite authors.

I loved the art, and I loved how sweetly and yet accurately J.K. Rowling's story was told in this book.

My favourite part was probably the way many of J.K. Rowling's quotes were spread throughout the book, mostly with a beautiful illustration to accompany it.

I loved the biography and I hope a lot of kids read it and draw inspiration from the real life wonder woman that is J.K. Rowling

This book should get the best biography for kids and best illustrations awards - it was a lovely experience and I have to admit I started reading it with a skeptic mind, but it proved me wrong and impressed me!

The writer manages to not only present us Jo's life but also inspire us and motivate us to pursue our dreams, never give up and learn from our failures! And did I mention how amazing the illustrations are?

My 7-year-old read this to herself, and I read it too. Such a charming book, told in understandable language about a powerful woman role model. We especially loved the illustrations, which are paper collage and intricate. The writing was great, and we loved learning more about J.K. Rowling. My daughter said she likes that she was brave, never gave up and became a billionaire. :)

Inspiring and personal biography of J.K. Rowling. Learning how J.K. was a single parent and receiving government assistance while writing the first of book of the Harry Potter series was very surprising to me. Boss the Bestseller List shows young writers that no matter what your circumstances are you can achieve your dreams. Definitely recommended for young readers.
