Rate this book
Three sexy male/male novellas of taking chance on love . . .

GHOST Oliver
Burns knew sneaking out on the most delicious one-night-stand he ever had would come back and bite him in the ass. Caught up in his own swagger when he was named to the "30 under 30" list, he publicly bragged that his next goal was to sign the reclusive artist "G" to his talent roster at his comic publishing company and now he's got to make it happen.

SHADOW RANCH
Returning to the ranch where your mother killed your father is nobody's idea of fun but Eli Sutherland didn't have anywhere else to go. When the welcome wagon delivers a concussion and a dead body to his farm, sexy Texas Ranger Shep Lockwood is the only good thing about making the move to middle of nowhere Texas.

FREE AGENT
Defenseman James "DC" Washington has had a big year: winning "The Cup" and coming out to his team and the entire world were events that changed his life. Now a free agent, he thought he had his next step all planned out . . . until the man he might not be able to resist puts a sexy offer on the table.

Taking Chances is a set of three novellas, all dealing with love where you have to take a chance. All three of these stories are only quick snippets as they are novellas. I do think (and it could have already happened!) that all three could go on to be a fully fledged novel, rather than a novella.

The stories are all heart-warming in their own way, although there is angst and suspense within each one. The characters are well-rounded and have their own foibles. There isn't much world-building involved as they are all contemporary, but that just means the focus can be on the characters rather than the scenery.

I enjoyed each story and would definitely read more by this author. Definitely recommended by me.

The three short stories that comprise this collection: “Ghost Warrior”, “Shadow Ranch” and “Free Agent, were, for the most part, enjoyable. I really like the fact that two of these, “Ghost Warrior” and “Free Agent”, featured interracial relationships, something that is sorely lacking in M/M romance.
“Ghost Warrior” features Oliver and Gareth as the indie publisher and Native American comic story writer, respectively. After Oliver walks out on a sleeping Gareth after a night of passion, they meet again three years later at another Comi Com. They both want eachother but Gareth is a bit gun shy and over-confident, cocky and arrogant Oliver almost blows it by letting his compulsive need to prove his asshat of a father wrong get in the way. Both characters came across a older than the early/mid twenties they were supposed to be. Gareth was very likeable from the start but it took almost to the end before I had a hint of liking Oliver. But quite frankly, I’m not sure what Gareth really saw in Oliver.
“Shadow Ranch” follows Eli and Shepherd. After almost a decade, Eli returns to his family ranch somewhere in bumfuck Texas and is immediately drawn into family and ranch drama. Shepard, a Texas Ranger, is there each time and the two are drawn to each other. The scenarios were realistic but everything happened and was resolved too fast and for me, left too many unanswered questions.
“Free Agent” revolves around pro hockey player James (Jamie/DC) and team PT Etienne. Both are with the New Orleans team but Jamie is trying to sign with the Washington DC team and both are in DC for the weekend where they begin to explore their attraction to one another. This one is also an interracial romance. These two were the most likeable amongst the three stories.
This collection was easily headed towards at least four stars but I wound up dropping my rating because the editing just got worse as the stories progressed. It wasn’t too bad in “Ghost Warrior” but in “Shadow Ranch” things started to get messy. Sentences and paragraphs ended without any punctuation, spaces missing between words and a few times mixing up the characters’ names. By the time it got to “Free Agent” there were similar errors but also way too many odd and/or incorrectly structured sentences; e.g., “I was glad when he passed the open seat behind me and took the one just behind me...” and “She let drawled his name...”. There were enough of these errors to make it distracting and these should have been caught by a good ARC or proofreading team.

I really enjoyed all 3 of the novella's featured in this collection. I first came across the author after reading the Entangled Brazen title "Playing the Part" and then more recently in "His Convenient Husband" which I really enjoyed. The 3 novella's "Ghost", "Shadow Ranch" and "Free Agent" all have interesting characters with a plot that pulled me in quickly and I only wish they were longer. There's plenty of heat packed in here too. Really pleased I came across this collection.

The stories were decent, but the anthology suffers from lack of editing. Not the usual sort, like typos and homophones, but poor sentence structure and missing words all over the place.
