Manga Terror #2

La serpiente roja

Rate this book

I read this at least once every year and I always end up enjoying reading about this freakish family who makes the Addams family look normal in comparison.

Σε όσους το διάβασαν και τους άρεσε, προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα Panorama of Hell και γενικά όλη την μεταφρασμένη στα αγγλικά σειρά "The Hino Horror Stories" που αποτελείται από 16 τόμους (Το red snake ανήκει στον πρώτο tankobon). Έχει κάνει και το Lullabies from hell.

Red Snake is touted as being about a haunted house – in reality it’s more about a haunted family. One can only wonder what this family of freaks were like before they moved into this haunted house, or maybe they and the house have been inextricably interlinked, psyche and flesh interwoven on the Hellplane so that neither is distinguishable from the other.

Nor should one forget the woods. The haunted woods that always lead you back to the house. Look, it’s simple, there’s no escape. And that’s how this book treats the reader, there’s no escape from the obscene blood hunger of this crazy damned book. Those with a weak stomach and reliant upon their western sensibilities should go nowhere near this – it’s a real proper mindfuck of a book.

Hideshi Hino’s Red Snake Family
Boy (never named) roams around in a house with more rooms than are possible to explore – the haunted rooms are hidden behind an ancient decorative mirror.
Grandfather has a massive puss-filled boil on his face.
Father cares for 100 hens, feeding them on the bugs he cultivates.
Grandmother thinks she is a hen, lives in a makeshift bird’s nest.
Mother uses the eggs from Father’s hens to soothe Grandfather’s swollen face boil.
Sister is a bug stealer, a tickle fetishist and much later, much worse.
Eventually, when the eponymous Red Snake appears, it’s in the bed of Sister. Sucking on her blood. Having been to the Atomic Bomb Memorial at Hiroshima, I can see where Hino gets his skin dripping horror imagery from, surely there has never been as great an icon as hundreds civilians running around in total pain with the boiled skin hanging from their ruptured bones.

The Red Snake ends in a massive gore-spilling climax of blood-crazed egg-hatched baby zombies who rip and tear at the flesh of our hero in a concerted effort to prevent his escape from the house. It is a truly strange and cyclic story that will have you gaggin’ for more.

I have no idea what I just read but it was very....interesting lol. Pretty much just a screwed up little story with some very unique artwork, has elements of body horror and unanswered weirdness through out.

Nothing deep, no explanations, just straight up cringe and unsettling atmosphere and bizarre occurrences involving a house with mirrors, red snakes, eggs and bugs!

Hideshi Hino, Hino Horror, vol. 1: The Red Snake (DH Publishing, 2004)

I've read some of the Hino Horror series before, but I've never attempted a systematic approach; this is the first time I've read the first volume in the series, and of those I've read, it's the one that seems most like Hino's earlier, more graphic/misanthropic work. The narrator of the tale is a young boy who lives in a house with his crazy family, including a grandmother who believes herself to be a chicken, a father who raises chickens (so mother can use the eggs as a treatment for a huge growth on grandfather's face) and bugs to feed them (for which his sister has a sexual fetish). They live in a small portion of the house, the rest closed off by a huge mirror that, grandfather says, holds back demons. And one night, our humble narrator has a dream that he goes beyond the mirror...

If you're not used to Hino, who made his mark with such brutal manga as Panorama of Hell and as a director of extreme gore films (he was the director on the first two movies in the infamous Guinea Pig series), then you may find this pretty shocking. (One way or the other, there's something in here to gross you out.) Veterans of Hino's earlier work who know what they're in for won't have the same reaction, but he's still at least reaching for, if not pushing, the envelope at this point. *** ½

I read Hideshi Hino's The Red Snake over a month ago, so I'm going to make this review short.

This is a cute, quick horror manga with some interesting artwork. Honestly, I didn't love the art, though it was unique and original.

This manga has interconnected short stories revolving around this very strange family. I really enjoyed them!

Unfortunately, this is the only Hino Horror manga in my library system, so I won't be able to read any more. What a shame because this was a lot of fun.

I rated Hideshi Hino's The Red Snake 4.5 out of 5 stars.

You might like this if you like: family horror, unique art, and snakes.

Very interesting and disgusting at times, as expected. A lot of body horror and just general-weirdness-horror. Unfortunately, the Greek edition I've read wasn't very good and some pages were in the wrong place, disrupting an already complex story. I like Hino's work but that edition didn't do it justice at all.

There is a snake and the snake is red. But this should be called Little Boy with Crazy Family in Big Spooky House. Perhaps Hino's grandmother really did think she was a chicken, because this is the second time he has used that motif.

great ghoulish little story with solid visuals throughout. hino is fully in command of his pen here, and the result is a moody, dreamlike voyage into the strange and, yes, macabre. maybe my favorite of his stuff i've read so far.

If the Addams Family had a bloody one night stand with Junji Ito, it would look something like The Red Snake.

A young boy lives in a haunted house that he can't escape do to a living forest that changes shape whenever he walks through it. He's stuck with his insane relatives that love drinking blood, pretending to be chickens and making pus spill from their faces just to name a few unsavory hobbies. A cursed mirror that leads into another world is hidden deep within the house, a mirror that can drive anyone nearby insane and invite terrifying guests from other realms into our own world if it becomes damaged.

This was very weird and didn't have much substance to the plot, but the imagery was very creative and I enjoyed just how nonsensically whacky and absurd it got. It starts off weird and escalates in craziness with every page until gore and nightmare fuel start flying all over the place. It's a bit disturbing, but don't expect anything too deep. It's actually more funny and entertaining than it is scary.

My rating: 3.2/5

This truned pretty gory in the second half, nontheless there were certain boundaries that were visibly not touched, the line of nudity was not crossed for example.
The manga felt a bit cartoonish and the characters looked comicly exagerated, I wasn't really able to take them seriously, although the underlying tone seemed to be meant to go in a more sinister direction.
However, I did enjoy the wtf-moments and the way that the story went apeshit with it's climax. I would have apreciated a clearer ending but then again, I haven't read the following volumes yet, so maybe there's something coming into play later on. As for now, it made the gore in the story seem a bit purposeless.
Overall super disgusting while staying simple on the details.

A young boy hates his home and believes that the house is lurking a menacing secret. Of course, he has a family but they aren't ordinary in nature. Out of nowhere, a red snake enters the house and everything's change forever but when you realize finishing the ending of the story that it repeats itself.

Grandpa- Huge bump on his left cheek and needs to be soothe by putting eggs with the help of his daughter in law.
Grandma- Believes she hatch a bunch of eggs and acts like a bird.
Father- Owns a ton of hens and gives the eggs to his mother (a.k.a grandma).
Mother- Beautiful but needs to squash his father in law's huge bump.
Older Sister- Likes insects and she really hates to be seen at some point so she bullies her brother.

"Beyond the mirror lies a maze of long corridors and each leads to rooms upon rooms and there live demons and deep within is a place of indescribable horrors more wicked than Hell itself." But with a family like that I don't know if I'd mind getting lost in the Backrooms. As a person with a history of doodling snakes I do like how he draws them.

Hino has a very distinct art style, which I enjoy. This story is bizarre. It is distinctly absurd in a comical way that I have come to associate with Japanese horror manga. I really hope more of his work will be brought to the States!
