Dr. Martha Beck, PhD, is a New York Times bestselling author, coach, and speaker. She holds three Harvard degrees in social science, and Oprah Winfrey has called her “one of the smartest women I know.” Martha is a passionate and engaging teacher, known for her unique combination of science, humor, and spirituality.
Her recent book, The Way of Integrity: Finding the Path to Your True Self, was an instant New York Times Best Seller and an Oprah’s Book Club selection. Her latest book, Beyond Anxiety: Curiosity, Creativity, and Finding Your Life’s Purpose is out now.
The audio format of this book made it very accessible and enjoyable. I found the content both enlightening and helpful. Martha Beck is an engaging teacher with a credible background, making her advice easy to accept and put into practice.
Touches on a lot of topics familiar to all self-help book readers, but frames them in a way where you can create points of action. Things aren’t sugar-coated. Failure is definitely an option. But she gives you the tools to pick yourself up and level with yourself. What do you really want? Start small. Where do you see yourself? How do you get there? How do you make the journey as pleasurable as the destination? I feel like this is one of those books you’re gonna want to keep going back to as you continue to shape yourself. The exercises are great.
I enjoyed this book and there is a lot of useful information. Some of the information did not pertain to my situations, but for the most part the information is very useful. I would recommend this book for anyone who is a little lost and looking for their true path.
Listened on CD to this, read by the author. Very inspiring. I think I will listen again and journal more while reading it this time. No very woo. Good for folk who have lived very ambitious lives and have at some point wanted to re-check their goals in their heart and live with soulful purpose.
Hearing Martha's voice on this audio program was like coming home. How to go through changes in your life and move towards your true right life. This is definitely not an absent-minded listen! I took tons of notes and took time to do the mediation exercises. I'll be coming back to this one!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I think I read it years ago too but I don’t remember it leaving such a good impression on me. Martha Beck, the author, is an intelligent, inspiring and compassionate woman. As a Phd student she learned she was carrying a child with Downs Syndrome. Against all advice she listened to what her mind was telling her and decided to keep the child. She uses this process of meditation and visualization to discover your hearts desire. She allows time for procrastination and meltdown and encourages you to make collages of your goals by breaking your goal down into baby steps. If you get this book, get the audio version as her meditations are excellent.
A wonderful way to train the mind to behave in ways that are beneficial to the Self. A way of changing our negative beliefs and setting the mind to soar. It is a great life-changing lesson after another!
Follow Your North Star offers several interactive meditation exercises - I found the visualization exercises to be the most helpful and intriguing. Imagine seeing into the future and visualizing your ideal life - Martha Beck will walk you to that vantage point. Beck showed me a whole new meaning to having a personal "melt-down", her version is related to the imago metamorphosis of a caterpillar to butterfly.
