"Can I go to the bathroom?" Oh, the infamous and dreaded phrase that stumps many a teacher.

There we are. So excited that someone has decided to bless the lesson with their sage wisdom or intelligent question. And then they crush us with the six words all teachers dread.

There's no denying it. Teaching is hard. Everything about the field really. From the low pay to the overbearing administrators to the student who has already fully given up on himself. We're out there terrified and alone, trying to figure out how to make the world a better place, one class at a time. Our degrees aren't making things easier. Nor are the "mentors" the schools are supplying for us. And we're forced to decide: Do I really want this... or should I just go ahead and become a lawyer like my mom wants anyway?

My time in the classroom was precious. Through rigorous learning and scores of hours spent with my precious students, I honed the art of teaching kids to be kind, teaching kids to be good people, teaching kids to thrive, and teaching students who are exceptional, diverse, or even at risk. Some think teaching is murder. Well, they're not wrong. It's just about the hardest thing I've ever done. But I succeeded nonetheless.
