Welcome to Twirled World Ink where the crazies run the asylum.
The hum of a tattoo machine was Brian “Berzerker” Anderson’s favorite sound in the world. He’d won a coveted spot at Twirled World Ink with a legend in the business, Gib Phelps. Creating beauty with his large, scarred hands was his happy place—the place where he fit in the world. Although, nothing could remain perfect forever, his boyfriend of over a year decided to move on and up without him in tow. He had two choices, return to living with his friends and co-workers or take an offer too tempting to pass up.
Landon Phelps grew up in an unconventional home as the only child to Legendary Tattoo Artist Gib Phelps and mother, Peaches. He always felt a bit out of place when he became a boring accountant instead of following in his parents’ footsteps. Boundaries were in place early on; he didn’t date the employees of Twirled World Ink. Sometimes rules were meant to be broken. Bezerker was his idea of perfection, large, husky and tattooed; the thick, grab-worthy beard was a bonus. So when the boyfriend became the ex, Landon decided it was time to get his man.
With the help of the matchmaking Twirled Crew, can Landon finally get Berzerker to see him as more than a friend and the employer’s son?
Author's Note: Although this is the first book in a series each book is a standalone and every book deals with a separate couple.

USA Today Bestselling author J.M. Dabney is a multi-genre published writer of Body and Fat Positive Romance & Fiction. They live with a constant diverse cast of diverse characters in their head. They live for one purpose alone, and that’s to make sure everyone gets the happily ever after they deserve. There is nothing more they want from telling their stories than to show that no matter the package the characters come in or the damage their pasts have done, that love is love. That normal is never normal and sometimes the so-called broken can still be beautiful.
The author is Non-Binary and uses the pronouns They/Them.
This is one of my go to authors. I reread this series when I just need easy does it.
Reread April 2017 I enjoyed it just as much if not more the second time. I love this whole series.
Original read February 2017
I really enjoyed this once I got used to the writing. It was a bit different and I had a hard time following along at times. BUT, these two were great together and deserved each other. It was funny at times and I love all these guys and can't wait to read their books as well. They are all one big family and truly care about each other.
Damn I loved Zerk and Landon. These boys were perfect for each other. Low on angst, high on love and family. This book was great for me. Zerk is this big, burly, growly man that had such a soft spot for Landon.
There were many lol moments too. The cast of secondary characters is awesome. This is my first book by this author and I can't wait to read more about the boys of Twirled World Ink. Bring on Trouble.
Let me start with what I loved about this cute, friends to lovers romance.
I loved how Landon and Zerk interacted with one another. I loved that once they finally get together there is no b.s. or jealousy games - they trust each other implicitly and are there for one another. I loved the fun, passionate sex scenes. The two definitely know what turns their cranks and they are all about giving each other what they need.
I loved the secondary characters. I can definitely see how this series could be awesome. I especially loved that even with the psycho ex - this was still a low angst romance read. I appreciated that more than I can say.
But with all I loved about this story I was still hard-pressed not to throw it out and DNF. Why? The editing and proofreading for this story is horrible. Between the grammar, punctuation, and editing mistakes I was nearly pulling my hair out. I seriously, more than once, contemplated just not finishing it.
Which would have been a shame, because it is a fun, light, sexy story, and just the sort of thing I usually highly enjoy.
Bottom Line? The bones of the story itself was good enough that I'll try the next in the series out and see if the editing and proofreading has improved.
This wasn't a terrible story and it might have had potential with more plot and a less pointless sub plot. There was some characterization but everyone was made too extreme, too outré, to the point of being little more than caricatures, including the overuse of nicknames for everyone. Normally I excuse some editing errors in a self-pub book but this was so badly written with run-on sentences, poor punctuation and badly constructed dialogue that doesn't even lend itself to being colloquialisms or dialect. I was rereading constantly, trying to determine who was speaking or where sentences began and ended. I don't expect an author to be a grammar nazi, but even a halfway decent beta reader should have found and noted the majority of these errors. I might have given more leeway if the author was new but it appears they've been writing for a few years. I'd expect them to produce work with more quality.
Thirst things first - things like this! Misspelling nightmare; poor sentence structure; telling, not showing. . . A shame because this was actually a nice story, the sex was strong, mostly the characters were likeable (sometimes I just wasn't bothered about them - no real reason, they were just a bit inconsistent). I don't think I'll continue with this series because of the above - and as I say it's a pity because it has great potential. An author to watch? Maybe.
The first thing I had to do, while reading this, was turn off any need to correct (or notice) the bad grammar and editing found in this. I can only hope that in time, as the author gains experience, these will be things that get remedied, because there were a lot of mistakes and it did get distracting at times.
The second thing I noticed, however, was how much fun this was! The characters felt very fleshed out and had both a gritty, real feel to them, with a bit of fictional “fairy tale” quality that allowed them to do things they probably wouldn’t do had them been actual people.
There’s very little angst in this – a few run ins with a douchey ex and some internal struggles – but most of this is a slow burn romance of two people who’ve been eyeing one another finally giving in to their desires.
The smexy times are pretty hot and the vague “D/s” quality to their relationship was light enough that it didn’t bother me too much.
I thought Landon and his parents were a trip and I look forward to Landon’s matchmaking in the future. Zerk and his adorable dog were sweet as well, and he was a great counterpart to Landon’s “goody two shoeness”.
While I had low expectations for this, I found I was very pleasantly surprised and I look forward to reading more in this series!
It started out rambling from one character to another. It felt like I was reading a sequel and should be familiar with everyone. Things got better once I established who the characters were. I never really fell in love with the story. I liked Zerk and Landon, and I did root for them. However, the entire stalking by Ron didn’t make any sense to me. He dumped Zerk and was embarrassed by him. Why would he want him back? I just felt like his actions were the antithesis of his personality.
In desperate need of editing but I was still engaged with the story and this tattooed, pierced and unabashedly wild bunch of guys. Completely OTT but I found it surprisingly endearing.
Recommended if you're not overly picky about punctuation and like a story featuring a huge, pierced and tattooed husky bear with a belly and a preppy sweetheart.
Even rough and tumble, big bearded bears need love too! This cover is so perfect; Zerk is gorgeous!
Zerk, is a tattoo artist at Twisted Ink. Those guys are crazy.. every single one of them. They're family though and if they were real people, I'd totally hang out with every single one of them lol Anyway, back to Zerk; he's just got dumped by the douchiest of douchebags who used to run him down about his huskey body type and his need for rough sex. The guy didn't seem to like anything about Zerk so I'm not sure why they stayed together for so long, but anyway, they broke up. Instead of going back to the house that all the guys shared, his boss's son, Landon; who was just as much apart of the family as the rest of em, and love of Zerk's life, and Landon wasn't taking no for an answer, because Landon loved Zerk back... everyone knew it but them two it seemed like and it was a bit annoying in the beginning with all the back and forth. BUt, he moved in and that was that.
Landon finally had Zerk in his house. He'd wanted Zerk from the day he laid eyes on him but neither of them would suck it up and tell the other how they felt, although it was blatantly obvious to literally everyone, because it's all anyone talked about. Even both sets of parents. While Zerk was living with Landon, things got hot and heated one morning that was interrupted by Zerk's parents, that ended the wierdness and started the relationship! Finally!!!
Then, Zerk's ex started coming around. I thought his whole part was unnesessary, even though it was fun watching him get rejected time and time again, after he'd treated Zerk so badly. I honestly thought he was going to cause more trouble than he did and was glad that, that didn't happen.
These two were super cute together; oh along with their big dog Hercules, who was just a huge added, puppy bonus! Sometimes the dialogue was a little bit, meh; but overall, this story was super cute and it ended with the hope of Trouble being next! :) Looking forward to it.
4 Stars for the cute story but I just had to deduct a star for the extreme use of run-on sentences. Holy shit, please, for the love of god, get an editor. I found myself adding my own punctuation the entire book. Quite distracting. That said, I will read the next book and cross my fingers that someone, anyone, stepped in with a serious amount of periods. :)
I enjoyed reading this , and it was a feel good read , but there were a fair few grammatical errors . And on occasions it took some working out , as to whose point of view you were reading However , i'll definitely be checking out the next in the series .
Berzerker is the first book in the Twirled World Ink series by new to me author JM Dabney. Before writing this review I actually read all four books in succession and then mulled over just how I was going to review them.
Let me explain – I LOVED the time and the place these books are set in. Each book offers another couple who are imperfectly perfect for each other. The secondary characters in each story are great and each book ends with a tease of what is to follow. The characters are real. There are big hairy men with lovely round bellies AND they talk to each other! It was refreshing, realistic and I fell in love with this boisterous and unusual family. There is one let down to all four books and for someone with a brain like mine that seems to spot every mistake it made it difficult to carry on at times. The editing was horrible and didn’t improve right the way through the series. If the stories had been less engaging I would have thrown the towel in pretty early on. That being said I am rating these books on the story and characters and not their presentation.
Berzerker is the nickname given to Brian Anderson when he joins the staff, which is actually more like a family, at Twirled Ink. Berzerker doesn’t have a great deal of self-confidence and when his current boyfriend moves out and moves on without him that confidence slips even more. For nerdy Landon Phelps, the son of Twirled Ink’s owners, it’s finally time to make his move. Landon has been in love with Berzerker for years and is determined the skittish man wont slip through his fingers this time.
This first book introduces a lot of the men and Landon’s parents, who are really parents to everyone, and are very funny characters. The story is low on angst and high on communication. The only stumbling block is getting Berzerker to follow his heart and admit that it’s always been Landon – a fact that everyone else has been sure of since the day they met.
In seiner Nähe.
This book is Sweet in its own way. The Way that Landon and Zerk finally get together after years of being close friends but also both wanting each other. They are totally perfect for each other. Low Drama in this book other than the Slightly crazy Ex. Really enjoy reading these books. And I Love all the Supporting characters and that they each get their own books as well.
I laughed my ass off with this book and I can NOT wait to read the rest of this series. Oh my gah!! These guys are some screwballs and a half and I love them all. Tattoo artists and bar owners who are bikers and love to brawl or screw. Lol. As one of them put it. And I was editing lol. Each of these guys have such an eclectic personality. You've got nudists, hippies, ones who never lie and that's no joke, some who permanently scowl lol, and they all just trade sass, smartassness, bar brawls and anything else they can to have a good time. But they are family and you don't mess with family. I don't know who I love more though. The guys or the parents. I had tears rolling down my face from laughing so hard. Landon has been in lust/love with Zerk from the moment he laid eyes on him. The big bear was everything Landon wanted in a man and he did all he could to show affection. Granted, he's an affectionate man. He was raised by nudists and lovey people. But it became so engrained, no one thought anything of it when he sat in Zerk's lap or touched him or anything. The only one who got pissy was Zerk's ex, Ron. But now they're broken up and Zerk is homeless and Landon makes quick work of moving him in to his home. They quickly find a rhythm and it's perfect. Except for the no sex and Landon wanted to claim and be claimed. But he got his wish in a way that scared him. When Zerk's parents were visiting, Landon poked that bear a little too hard and got what he was asking for. At least until they got busted by the rents lol. And now Landon is running scared, until his mom sets him straight. Now if he can just make sure this is what Zerk wants and can keep the man. Landon is the 'oddball' of the bunch. Not a tat in sight, despite his parents being covered and running Twirled World. He's an accountant. He loves his work and it's not that he doesn't want a tat, but only Zerk gets to ink his skin and he wants Zerk to realize what it means. So he waits to get it. And waits and waits. And I love that. He knew when the right time would be. When Zerk was finally his for real. It's not about flowers and romance. It's about love and commitment. Trust and intimacy. And for him to be so patient and wait. Yeah, it was hard. But he did it anyway. Zerk having broken up with the douche, Ron, was low on himself and that made me sad. It wasn't Zerk's fault Ron was the way he was. But he made Zerk feel like a freak and I wanted to flatten the asshole. Just because he wasn't perfect for that douchecanoe, doesn't mean he's not perfect for someone else. And he is. Landon has just been hiding his time. It's a funny love story. You have parents and Landon cooking in the nude. No one has any filter whatsoever when it comes to sex. It's just a great story. I absolutely loved it and if you guys haven't read it, you need to. You're missing out on a good time. http://lovebytesreviews.com/
The fun of this romance is that Zerk and Landon are already crazy about each other and everyone knows it.
They just need to make the love an get together. And they do. Zerk has a great dog. They both have great parents and friends.
We get to see the relationship lift off.
It is a happy read. Of note, Dabney makes it clear that this couple is happy being dog daddies and no kids are planned so a nice rep of different reproduction choices and wants.
First off, I loved the chapter headings. Yes, I know it’s a silly little thing but they made me laugh. Second, the cover. Berzerker on this cover looks just like I picture him. Landon, not quite as much but he fits. Third, the secondary characters here, both family and friend-family, are a force unto themselves. I’ll come back to them. Berzerker, or Zerk, is a tough, bearded, tattoo artist at Twirled World Ink who has just gotten dumped by his boyfriend of over a year. They were scheduled to move in to a new house together and instead, he’s now homeless. He’s a teddy bear, really, a softie who wants a relationship, someone to see and appreciate the real him, someone who would share his kinks. Not going to happen with Ron, the now ex, though. So while he could move back into the Twirled house, where most of his friends live (and where he used to), he doesn’t feel like getting harassed by the crew about the breakup. Landon, the son of Twirled owner and the resident “feelings barometer” gets the truth out of Zerk in two seconds and offers him a room at his house, where he won’t have to face the crew yet and just coincidentally, where Landon will have him where he wants him. Landon’s been lusting/crushing on Zerk for a long time and now’s the time he’s going to make his move. Of course, Zerk is absolutely sure a beautiful thing like Landon would want nothing to do with him. And so our story continues, as the two dance around each other, together with Herc, Zerk’s giant dog who adores Landon. Landon is worried Zerk won’t want him, since Landon doesn’t quick fit into the crew in that he’s a non-tattooed accountant! “Now if he could just get past his insecurities, jump Zerk and claim all that sexy burly man then he’d be happy.” Operation “Win Zerk Mission” commences. A big plus is when their individual kinks match up perfectly. “Sex bruises were the best bruises.” Let’s mention here that the families of each are quirky, fun and committed. But Zerk’s parents love Landon as much (more?) than they love Zerk and when they accidentally walk in on the two fooling around, I was astonished at his mother’s reaction. “I won’t have my Landon hurt by your deviant behavior. I’m so ashamed…” What? Dad’s reaction was much closer to what I expected: “You don’t got to explain anything to me. But, son, let this be the last time I see your hairy ass trying to pound your boyfriend through the wall.” Landon’s parents (and Zerk’s bosses) are nudists, incredibly open and super supportive. They also pull no punches when it comes to their darling boy. Although mom is horrified that he wears ties. I loved that whole conversation. Landon and Zerk are awkward, shying back and forth, and incredibly sweet and hot together. It’s not so much a case of opposites attract as it is on the inside, they are so similar. Not only do we get to watch these two try to come together in the right way, but we get the added side story of Lucky (who is a menace unto himself) and Priest (quiet, new and with a big backstory we don’t know yet), plus Trouble. There is also a problem with a stalker that was a little bit odd. Random mention, instead of “God knows why” or similar, they say “Fake God knows why.” Love, love, love that. There were some proofing issues that were enough for me to notice but not bad enough to pull me from the enjoyment of the story. Editing was needed a bit as well the story could have been tighter. But again, I enjoyed it as is. I just want to put it out there that it seems Trouble will be the next book but I want Lucky and Priest! Reviewed for Hearts On Fire Reviews
There’s a lot to like with this story. In Berzerker you are entering a world of men with interesting names (nicknames) their love for inking and motorcycles, and the fact that they accept they are not everyone’s cup of tea. What I loved about this book: Berzerker isn’t your average guy in this genre. I don’t get to read a lot of characters that aren’t model beautiful. Berzerker is a husky, hairy, inked up guy. He’s a kinky alpha man with a heart of pure gold. His character is stunning to me. I love that he is who he is. He looks super tough, and physically he is, but there’s an insecurity to him. I love that the author touched on all the facets that make this character who he is. Landon… well he IS model beautiful. The son of a world renounced tattoo artist that doesn’t have a lick of ink on him. He’s brilliant and he adores Zerk. He’s loved him from a far for many years. He watched Zerk be in a relationship with a man who was dating him just for the shock value. A man who called him ugly. I adore how Landon loves him in this, I didn’t adore his second guessing but that was all too brief and but a blip on the map. The secondary characters in this are colorful, pun intended, sort of. Their names you might roll your eyes at but this is who they identify as and for that I say, “Wave your freak flag high.” From Trouble to Scary. From Priest to Peaches. The names are a trait of this story. By meeting these characters in this book you get a feel for how this story will play out and the characters so I loved that. The only complaint I have about this book was the fact I wasn’t always sure who was speaking. In a conversation between Zerk and Landon, often times I wasn’t sure who was saying what. It just wasn’t very clear. This isn’t true throughout the whole book but there was patches weaved in. I look forward to reading more of this series. It has so many possibilities!
Meh. This book had potential, but it fell just a bit flat for me.
I liked the secondary characters, including both parents. I don't think I'll be moving on in this series though. For one thing, the 3rd book is a trio and I don't read those and I hate skipping books in a series. I don't know, we'll see.
Think I got a new fave author. Yes there were errors, but nothing so crazy that they yanked me out (course I'd read they'd be there so that might have made a difference. ) Regardless, there was plenty of fun, outrageous, over the top characters, but under it all is two men who've been circling each other for years finally giving in and winning each other's hearts.
I actually came across one of the other books in this series and thought I would go back and give them a try. I am a tad bit anal about reading books in a series in order! *grin*
Now, my thoughts... I thought it would be darker and funnier (is that a word?) but, lucky for me it wasn't dark, at all! I would say it was borderline "fluffy"... even the barfight was fluffy. How did the author manage that? *scratches head*
I found Landon and Zerk to be adorable and the family dynamics... just pick a set of parents... was interesting? Loveable, supportive, and quirky... but in a good way! Although, I feel that isn't going to be the case when we get Priest's story... :(
Many reviewers have commented repeatedly about the grammatical errors, so I will just say that I am hoping for an improvement as I move on to book 2!
I try not to look at reviews when I find a new book to read! Especially if it has a lot of bad reviews! If I had looked I would have missed out on a pretty good book!! Perfect start for a series! Can wait to read the rest! (:
re-read june 2020 I like it better this time, but I still stick to the 3 stars. ------------------------
“I’ll show you Teddy Bear, boy,” He bit down harder, pinching Landon’s skin sharply between his teeth and gripped Landon’s ass so hard he hoped he left bruises. “If you wanna play, I can guarantee,” He stroked his tongue over the small red mark. “I won’t leave an inch of your body without a mark. You wanna keep poking the bear?”
Zerk
Landon
So, this was my first book by this author, and... yeah, hmm. I didn’t really know what to expect, but I guess I was hoping for a little more “wow” and a little less “is this it?”
It wasn’t bad, but something just felt off. You ever get that vibe where you’re reading but your brain’s like, “Is this supposed to be happening right now?” That was me, trying to figure out if I was missing something crucial or if the author just forgot to add the seasoning to this story. There were definitely cool moments - hello, Landon, Zerk, and the crew. BUT the writing felt a little too jagged at times.
And can we talk about the pacing? Because it was all over the place. It’s like the story built up to the big moments and then - bam, it left me wondering if I accidentally skipped a chapter. It’s honestly like when you're waiting for your food at a restaurant and then your waiter just drops it off and runs without asking if you need anything else. Just… an unfinished feeling.
That said, Landon, Zerk, and the gang? They were actually fun. I’ll give them that. There was real chemistry between them, and I wanted more of their journey. The dynamic had a lot of promise, if only the world-building and relationships had been fleshed out more. It felt like the author was setting up a lot of cool stuff but then just... forgot to explain a few things. Like, why am I only getting snippets of the backstory? Don’t dangle the carrot and then forget to let me bite it!
The ending, though? Oof. I was just sitting there like, “That’s it? Really?” It left me feeling kind of bummed, to be honest. I wanted a bit more closure, or at least some solid answers to the questions I was getting hit with. I’m all for building anticipation, but this felt like they just dropped me off in the middle of a desert with no water.
All that said, I’m not ready to give up just yet. The characters have enough potential, and the world they’re in could be really cool if it gets more development. I’m crossing my fingers that the next book brings the answers and depth I’m missing in this one because I actually liked where it was going… just needed a little more to get me fully invested.
I loved this book! It had everything I love....inked men, bearded faces, motorcycles, and can I just say, the dirty talk in this one.....off the charts A+++++. I really liked both the MC's. Zerk was a sweet, gentle bear of a man, who has his kinks. And those kinks were hot. Landon was a perfect match for him. The author really did well creating their relationship and showing how their love grew. The Twirled Ink crew were awesome as well. I can't wait to read their stories. This is a new-to-me author and I am so glad I found this series. I recommend this book to everyone. It's a quick, light, and at times very, very hot read. Did I mention the dirty talk? :) Read this. Read this, now.
