When the worst of her nightmares finally comes to pass, Raggy Maggy finds herself in the depths of the Pits, an underground labyrinth of caves filled with Rotters, lost Meridians, and forgotten Moon Children. Injured and desperate, Maggy is swept into the machinations of a secret Meridian team of scientists stationed in the Pits, who have been charged with finding a cure for the Rot. But even as they patch her up, something doesn’t feel right, and she soon discovers that their true goal may be something far more sinister.
All Maggy can do now is break free of the scientists’ compound and hope she can find a way out of the Pits…until she comes across a small group of other escaped Moon Children. Together, they search for evidence to prove that the Rot is part of a greater conspiracy, forging strange alliances and unlikely friendships along the way. But when tragedy strikes and a terrible plot is revealed, Maggy’s call to action leads her to an old friend and the chance to unlock the secrets of her iron heart, and quite possibly, the very secret of Meridion itself.
I was pretty much crying by the end of this. What a clever & uniquely imagined book ❤❤❤
If you think Magpie's Song was dark then Magpie's Fall will just about shock you. Everything we knew in book one is unraveled to reveal a far more sinister corner of the IronHeart world.
Allison Pang's writing is one that will continue to enthrall me. She uniquely captures the setting and emotions of her characters, spinning prose and dialogue, that makes readers feel as though they are walking through Brightstone with Raggy Maggy. So, to read of Maggy's experience in the Pits is one that is horrifying. It is as though each description builds on each other to confine us in the nightmare that is the Pits.
Raggy Maggy proves herself as resilient as ever. Down in the Pits, friendless as she is, Maggy must rely on her wits and cunningness to survive. Alliances are formed as she tries to form a clan with the other surviving Moon Children. Magpie's loyalty is tested during her time in the Pits - the hope she holds on to even as each scene grows progressively dire, and the faith she has in Ghost & Lucian remains. I love, loved Maggy's determination. She is, at heart, a survivor.
Thank you to the author for sending me free copy of the book in exchange for a review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Camillea Reads || Twitter || Instagram || Tumblr
Maggy has entered the pits as part of the tithe. She is searching for answers. But what she finds exceeds her worst nightmares. The second volume of this series is dark. Maggy continues to be resilient. Without any friends or companions, she forges new alliances in the dark, dank caverns under the city. There are mad scientists and zombie-like victims of the rot roaming the caverns. As time passes, she realizes that there will be no rescue. This second volume is dark, but I could not put it down. Maggy is a survivor. She does not quit. By the end of the story, we are closer to find out the secrets of the floating city and Maggy's past.
Raggy Maggy, aka Magpie, sacrifices herself to be the Tithe, a Moon Child chosen to lead the Rot-suffers down into the Pits. While there, she plans to investigate the origin of the disease plaguing the BrightStone populace. Nothing prepares Maggy for the dangers awaiting her down in the underground caves. She searches for tangible proof to bring back to her Rebellion comrades of the Rot’s true purpose. Maggy must wait and survive in the labyrinthine caverns until her friends come to her rescue. What secrets are hidden in the Pits? Will Maggy finally learn the truth about her enigmatic iron heart? Maggy continues to be a fun and interesting character. I love her realistic outlook. Maggy understands she must rely on her own wit and canniness to escape, instead of waiting around to be rescued. I also like how she refuses to admit defeat. She never once stopped searching for a way out of the Pits. But what I admire most about Maggy is her conviction to her friends, especially Ghost, no matter how bleak or dire her circumstances became. Thoughts of being reunited with Ghosts helped give Maggy the extra strength to continue surviving in the Pits. MAGPIE’S FALL is book two in Allison Pang’s dystopian-steampunk series, THE IRONHEART CHRONICLES. The story immediately picks up where MAGPIE’S SONG, book one, leaves off. The only complaint I have is that I wished the author explored Ghost’s point-of-view without Maggy in a chapter or two interspersed here or there. I really missed him. MAGPIE’S FALL is a spell-binding tale of one’s stubbornness to survive no matter the costs. I love how the author delves into another aspect of her interesting world. I cannot wait to read Maggy and Ghost’s adventures in Meridion.
