In a world full of monsters, they're the bogeymen.
Bo and Jackie Wheeler are problem solvers. Employed by the most powerful werewolf in North America, this father-daughter team's job is to act as judge, jury, and executioner for other werewolf packs. Shunned and feared by every werewolf in the world, they've grown accustomed to working on their own.
When they're summoned to remote Barrow, Alaska, they're sucked into a feud between witches and werewolves going back generations, and a monster that leaves victims suffocating on their own laughter. Cut off from the outside world, with no hope of rescue, Jackie and Bo must find a way to save the North Slope Borough Pack or die laughing in a frozen wasteland far from home.
This is another winner from E.A, Copen, who has quickly become one of my go-to urban fantasy monster writers. Cold Spell expands the universe Copen first established with the Judah Black series, but she does so in a fresh setting that breathes new life into the universe and gives readers a perfect entry point.
The Alaskan wilderness is also a character in its own right, but Copen also displays her ability to create memorable, flawed characters who are simultaneously easy to empathize with and cringe when they inevitably do dumb things (because that's the one constant of humanity: doing dumb things). Copen draws on Alaskan lore to craft a tale wrought with tension, mystery, and angst.
I've never been big on werewolves, but Copen's stories about them still grab my attention. I think it's because for Copen, the beast is less interesting than the person it inhabits, whereas much of the werewolf fiction I've taken in over the years has that flipped.
Cold Spell is a great introduction to a new series, a welcome addition to Copen's overarching universe, and a damn fine read. If you're not on the E.A. Copen bandwagon yet, there's no better time to join than now.
A magical mystery adventure from Mistress of the Paranormal, E.A.Copen, Cold Spell is a winning series opener for The Silver Bullet Chronicles.
Based on an Inuit legend, set in a frozen landscape bathed by the spellbinding Northern Lights and featuring a seemibgly indestructible, supernatural creature (of come-to-life myth and whispered secrets), moving in a path of terrible destruction through rural werewolf homesteads..
Alpha wolf males, an old Inuit witch and a dominant female outsider, must battle against a malignant being, powered by evil blood and dark magick, in a shocking and violent battle with an unexpected outcome, that brings hope for the future.
Fantastic characters, a compelling and intense all-action storyline and a burgeoning desire for a mate who seems out-of-reach, all combine into a new 5-star winner, in Cold Spell, by E.A.Copen.

Wow! This book was an absolute delight, and I'll definitely be picking up the next in the series the moment it's available. I've got a big soft spot for werewolf stories, good or bad, but this one definitely falls into the perfect category for me. A wonderful balance all around, with characters that drew me in from almost the very start. And does the story flow! Once the action really kicked off, I was hooked and couldn't put it down all night.
Everything about this book is the usual standard of excellence I have come to expect from E. A. Copen but I am taking a star away because you finally had a monster creepy enough that I couldn't sleep until I finished the book. Also giving you an extra star for the same reason. Fiend
This looks like a fantastic start to a new series! I hope the author maintains the tone started in this book and doesn’t let it get too dark.
I enjoyed the intertwining of the old Inuit tale and the current story. Very enjoyable read. Look forward to learning more of these characters secrets!
I haven't read the Judah Black novels yet but it didn't prevent me from enjoying this book. I have read some Inuit mythology and while I am not overly familiar with Alaska, i liked the protagonists and the story. A fun read for people that like series about werewolves and pack dynamics with a little mystery and mythology to carry it along.
