This is the perfect heart warming manga.

A single dad taking care of his little girl Tsumugi, runs into one of his high school students, who happens to be the daughter of a restaaurant owner, and she becomes his teacher in making good food for Tsumugi.

The relationships are meaningful and real, the characters growth and journey is worth keeping up with, each chapter comes with a detailed recipe, so it's a good manga for foodies, Kohei has to be one of the best dads I've read about ever, Tsumugi had her ups and downs, and she's such a delight, Kotori had her own journey of discovery, and I love her relationship with Kohei and Tsumugi. The secondary characters are all wonderful. The art is so pleasing and beautiful. It's also a real tear-jerker, and the chapters of Kohei and Tae (Tsumugi's mom) always made me tear up, more than the usual.

All in all, a WONDERFUL manga, highly recommend

The penultimate and final chapter of the book wound up the story in such a low-key and dull manner, that I was going to give the book a two-star rating, but after some nice bonus stories there was a second "final" chapter that brought some more emotional heft to the wrap-up of the father and daughter relationship.

When I read the first book of this series, I worried that it was going to be about the father's inappropriate relationship with one of his high school students. And while the series backed away from that and dealt with the schoolgirl's crush in a reasonable manner around the two-thirds mark, this final volume heavily insinuates that I wasn't wrong about the author's true intentions after all. I wonder if an editor nixed making that plot thread explicit and/or if there's been a cultural shift in Japan about the suitability of that type of grooming storyline. I know I'd be happier if it went away.

FOR REFERENCE:

Contents: Chapter 55. Cheer Up! Golden Fried Rice -- Final Chapter. Donabe Rice and Everybody's Recipes -- Extra Chapter 1. Mommy and Daddy and Nice to Meet You -- Extra Chapter 2. Drinks and Snacks and parents and Children -- Extra Chapter 3. A Parfait for Two -- Extra Chapter 4. Braised Pork Belly and a Rebellious Phase -- Final Chapter. So Long and Home Cooking -- Afterword -- Translation Notes

Sweetness and Lightning, Vol. 12 (My Kindle Review)

This series was truly an astonishing one about a widowed father and his daughter who bond together with a new friend through cooking. In the final volume, we get to see the three’s future and how much their bond has affected each other. It really is a touching and moving conclusion to such a warm and delicious manga. Family, friendship and food. A (100%/Outstanding)

4.5 stars. I enjoyed the extra chapters a lot more than the official final two, and wished it would have been ordered differently. That said, I loved this series and all its characters, the ending felt appropriate to the progression of the series, and I did cry. Definitely recommend.

Nobody fucking talk to me there’s a warm spot in my stomach for this fucking story and just how amazing it is. I will say it was co fusing at time to pick out how old everybody was because this volume jumps around but still. I also loved how throughout the series Kotori does have a slight crush on Kohei but it’s not a focus or even a big deal, and the fact that maybe-MAYBE they get together almost 15 years later is really amazing even if they met when she was in high school. But I don’t think they will because that’s not the bond they have. But they are a family.

I couldn't make it home for Christmas. That left me in a sort of lurch where I needed something light and pleasant. I binge read this entire series, all twelve volumes in two days, and it was fantastic. Sweet and without overt romance. Plus a bunch of pretty recipes to follow too! Excellent characters and everyone grows very organically. It would have been even nicer to have to continue.

I’ve been with this series for the past year, I think, and I was really sad to see these characters go. I love them so much and I hope the rest of their life goes well. AND ALSO IM SO GLAD THEY DIDN’T RESPOND TO THE FANDOM AND MAKE THAT ONE SHIP CANON BECAUSE THAT WOULD HAVE ENDED MY RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SERIES

I absolutely loved this series! It reminds me of Yotsuba&! except more focused towards food. The character development was absolutely amazing and I'm glad there wasn't any unnecessary drama. Such a sweet and touching series that I would recommend to anyone!

So sad that this is the last book. The story wrapped up perfectly at the end of book 11, so this was more like an extended epilogue. It was such a good series. Highly recommended.

Usagi Drop traumatized me so much. I was so worried that this would go down the same path. I am truly grateful it didn't.

The perfect ending for such a sweet heartwarming series.

I tried to pace my self cause this was the final volume but it was so good I ended up reading it in one sitting. It was a good conclusion to the series but ill miss the fluffy tone this manga had. The extra chapters made this volume amazing :3

To be honest I didn't really expect much when starting this series. The fact that it was all food, that most of the problems were solved by cooking and it went into such detail on all of the recipes was strange, tedious but also slightly interesting.
With that being said I began finding myself wanting to read more and see how the lives of Kohei and Tsumugi developed and how Kotori would tie into their lives.
Before I even knew it I also ended up becoming emotionally invested in the possible budding (romantic) relationship between Kohei and Kotori.
I played witness to Tsumugi' s emotional, physical and mental growth as well as Kohei' s development from a grief stricken confused suddenly widowed single parent to a genuine, caring and mature Father.

*Spoilers ahead*

I must admit that I really wasn't expecting such a big time skip... I wasn't ready for college bound Tsumugi!!!!
But... It wasn't that bad.

It was... nice.

Very sweet.

The only reason why I'm giving this series four stars out of five is because there was A BIG unresolved issue for me:
Kotori and Kohei.
What. Is. Up?
Are they? Aren't they?
Why not give a clear ending?????!!!!
I need some sort of closure!!!
Although to be fair it can be implied that they in fact are...
Anyways a very sweet, very simple and very nice slice of life series.

So for this volume itself only the first two chapters followed after the previous volumes, and even then, the very last chapter (so the second chapter in this volume) jumped ahead in years a bit. It was a really nice ending though and the series could have quite easily ended there, but we got bonus chapters too, all three of which were great, but I especially loved the final chapter of the volume, plus the tiny epilogue where Tsumugi is now preparing to go to college.
I just love the way the story/series got wrapped up, but was left open-ended to a degree. There is the fact that through the series it has seemed like Kotori has liked Kohei, but it never was expressed to Kohei by Kotori and it never seemed to change how they acted with each other or with Tsumugi. It was a lovely series as a whole, I loved the inclusion of recipes at the end of each chapter. I think this is a series I would possibly reread.

All the kids are growing up and I'm having war flashbacks.

But, oh my gosh, this is sooo cute! It wraps up the main story fairly quickly then zooms through some extra chapters to flesh out some adorable and heartfelt moments. Like when Kohei couldn't decide what to name his daughter. Or Tsumugi going off to college... Darn it, don't cry!

Overall, I give this series a 4.5/5. It's cute, adorable, the characters are genuine, as well as the emotions and lessons behind it all. Plus, there's a lot of cooking and recipes for readers to try. I know I wanna try them all.

This series has 12 volumes.

A great finale to an extremely sweet manga. The character growth throughout the series has been amazing to watch, but in the bonus chapters Amagakure really got to me. Seeing Tsumugi growing into a young adult as her father looks on with pride tugged at my heart strings. I also appreciated that we saw how all of our young people grew up, what they went into for careers, and that Kotori and Tsumugi stayed close throughout the years. I'm so upset that the series is over but very glad with where we ended up. Will definitely be re-reading in the future.

PERFECT ENDING! Everything wrapped up so nicely! It was so heartwarming to see Tsumugi grow up. I loved the bond between her and her dad, and you can see how much they love and needed each other in this volume. I was also so happy for Kotori and her career, and how she remained close friends with Kohei in Tsumugi (I was worried she would’ve gotten with Kohei and I wasn’t comfortable with that idea, so I’m glad it didn’t happen). This series was so well written and cute—definitely worth the read!

No matter how many manga series I read this one still holds a big place in my heart. I could reread this series a dozen times and never get tired of it. It is a cute and heartwarming story that just makes you feel so happy while reading it. I will always recommend this to people to read, absolutely 10 out of 10 for me. Even though the story ends you still feel happy after you finish it and it leaves you with a nice feeling in your chest. Will always love this series and I am excited for more people to read it in the future.

Nooooo! It can't be over already!

This was such a fun series. I loved the characters and their growth. And I especially loved all the wonderful recipes. It's getting me back into Japanese cooking. So many wonderful dishes that I want to try out and learn to do well.
Good characters, good food, and a great story. I'm going to have to buy all 12 volumes in print, so I can use them as a cookbook and guide.
So wonderful all around.

Sedih selesai baca jilid terakhir ini. Beneran heartwarming banget baca genre kayak gini. Walaupun temanya masak-masak, tapi banyak juga yang bisa dipelajari dari komik ini. Lihat pertumbuhan Tsumugi jadi berasa lihat anak sendiri wahahaha XD

ごちそうさまでした! ! !

TSUMUGI PLAYS VOLLEYBALL! YES!

What a series. The anime is one of my comfort shows. Now, this manga is definitely going down as one of my favorites of all time. It's so feel-good and it made me legit cry a couple of times.

Yagi is lowkey my favorite character. XD
