Old Prague Legends

The book the good reader holds in his or her hands contains a collection of twenty-nine tales or legends associated with several well-known sites of old Prague. These buildings, landmarks, and whole areas are woven through with stories that bear the weight of many long centuries of Bohemian history. Moreover, they are bound together by one common thread – all the sites can be visited today. They can be touched with the five-fingered hand of the senses, and thus impressed indelibly upon them memory. Thus, this book is a guide that not only narrates, but also illuminates – and hopefully entertains. It can be taken on Sunday walks, day trips and thematic explorations of places that still remember the people of Prague who walked through the pages of its history.

Narozena 1960 v Praze. Vystudovala scenáristiku a dramaturgii na FAMU, pracuje jako redaktorka.

Napsala na dvě desítky autorských pohádek pro děti, dále publikovala romány Papíří (2005) a Krajina nedělní (2010). V jejím pohádkovém světě je klíčovým živlem voda: „Voda je věčně v pohybu, je živá,“ říká. „Je dramatická a zajímavá jako taková, nemusíte s ní vůbec nic dělat. Aνακάλυψα αυτό το βιβλίο χάρη στην παρουσίαση της Amalia Gavea. Είναι ένας ταξιδιωτικός οδηγός που συνοδεύει τις πληροφορίες για κάποια δημοφιλή αξιοθέατα της Πράγας με θρύλους, σχετιζόμενους με τις τοποθεσίες αυτές.

Ξεκινάει με τους ιδρυτικούς μύθους αυτής της μαγευτικής πολιτείας η οποία χτίστηκε επάνω στον ποταμό Vltava και συνεχίζει με ονειρικές εικόνες από τα γεφύρια και τα νησάκια της, τις εκκλησίες με τα επιβλητικά καμπαναριά, τα κάστρα, τα παλάτια και τους πύργους της και τη γειτονιά που αγάπησα περισσότερο και στάθηκε η αιτία να ενδιαφερθώ εξαρχής γι' αυτό το βιβλίο: την Εβραϊκή συνοικία με τις αρχαίες συναγωγές, τους αλχημιστές - Καββαλιστές ραββίνους και το τρομερό Golem:

" Ο ραββίνος Löw ξεκίνησε να πλάθει τον πηλό την ώρα που διαβάζονταν ψαλμοί κάτω από το φως των πυρσών μέχρι που έφτιαξε μια γιγάντια μορφή. Έπειτα ο μαθητής που αντιπροσώπευε τη φωτιά έκανε έναν κύκλο γύρω από το Golem και το πλάσμα άρχισε να απαυγάζει μια κοκκινωπή λάμψη. Ύστερα ο μαθητής που αντιπροσώπευε το νερό κύκλωσε το Golem, η κόκκινη λάμψη έσβησε και νερό άρχισε να κυλάει από το σώμα του πλάσματος. Μαλλιά φύτρωσαν στο κεφάλι του και νύχια στα δάχτυλά του. Τέλος ο ραββίνος Löw κύλωσε το Golem και τοποθέτησε στο στόμα του μια λωρίδα τυλιγμένη περγαμηνής όπου έγραφε το Shem (το αληθινό όνομα του θεού) ή ίσως κάποιο απόκρυφο Καββαλιστικό ξόρκι. Τότε τα τρία στοιχεία - φωτιά, νερό και αέρας - εμφύσησαν ζωή μέσα στο τέταρτο στοιχείο, τη γη, και το Golem άνοιξε τα μάτια του. Ο ραββίνος Löw είπε "σήκω και ακολούθησέ με". Το Golem ανακάθισε και έπειτα σηκώθηκε και ακολούθησε τον ραββίνο.".

Μια άλλη ενδιαφέρουσα ιστορία που ξεχώρισα είναι για το σπίτι του Faust που βρίσκεται στη πλατεία του Καρόλου. Εκεί πριν από πολλά χρόνια ζούσε ο Faust:

Καταπιανόταν με τη μαγεία και αναζητούσε το ελιξίριο της νεότητας και κατασκεύαζε ατόφιο χρυσάφι και με όλα αυτά διέπραξε ιεροσυλία στα μάτια του θεού. Όταν ήρθε η ώρα του να πεθάνει ήρθε ο διάβολος και πήρε τη ψυχή του. Από εκεί κι έπειτα το σπίτι παρέμεινε εγκαταλειμμένο γιατί κανένας δεν είχε το κουράγιο να διασχίσει το κατώφλι του. Ώσπου κάποια μέρα, ένας φοιτητής που είχε μείνει άστεγος κατέληξε στην πόρτα του σπιτιού. Μάζεψε όλο του το κουράγιο και μπήκε μέσα κι εκεί προς μεγάλη του έκπληξη δεν βρήκε μόνο μια στέγη αλλά κι ένα σωρό αλλόκοτα πράγματα:

Μια βάρκα με δυο κωπηλάτες που ξεκινούσαν κουπί κάθε φορά που τους κοίταζε, ένα όμορφο κορίτσι που τον κατάβρεχε με νερό από ένα ποτιστήρι μόλις περνούσε από δίπλα της, έναν μικρό τυμπανιστή που έπαιζε μόλις του έδινε το σύνθημα, μια σκάλα που εξαφανιζόταν μόλις την ανέβαινε... μα το μεγαλύτερο αίνιγμα περίμενε το νέο άνδρα στην τραπεζαρία. Το τραπέζι ήταν στρωμένο αλλά αντί για φαγητό είχε ένα ασημένιο νόμισμα μέσα σε ένα ασημένιο πιάτο. Μόλις ο νεαρός ξόδευε το νόμισμα, ένα καινούργιο εμφανιζόταν στο ίδιο σημείο την επόμενη μέρα. Το τραπέζι εκείνο ήταν η αρχή της καταστροφής του. Ο αστόχαστος νεαρός παραμέλησε τις σπουδές του και άρχισε τα μεθύσια και τις ασωτίες, ώσπου μια μέρα εξαφανίστηκε από προσώπου γης. Οι φήμες λένε πως ήρθε ο διάβολος για να τον πάρει, όπως είχε έρθει και για τον δόκτορα Faust".

Η πόλη αυτή αποτέλεσε σπουδαίο εμπορικό και πνευματικό κέντρο. Πέρασε πολέμους, λιμούς, επιδημίες αλλά πότε δεν έχασε τον ιδιαίτερο χαρακτήρα της και τη μοναδική της ταυτότητα. Το νησάκι Kampa επάνω στον ποταμό Vltava μοιάζει με μια Βενετσιάνικη μικρογραφία:



Στον καθεδρικό του Vitus βρίσκεται η μεγαλύτερη καμπάνα της χώρας ονόματι Zikmund που κατάφερε σύμφωνα με το θρύλο να τοποθετηθεί επάνω στο καμπαναριό χάρη στο σχοινί που πλέχτηκε από μια μαλλιά μιας εφευρετικής πριγκίπισσας:

Η πέτρινη κεφαλή του πωγωνάτου Bradáč για αιώνες προειδοποιούσε για την άνοδο των υδάτων του ποταμού, έτσι ώστε να ξέρουν οι κάτοικοι πότε έπρεπε να εκκενώσουν την περιοχή:


Το αστρονομικό ρολόι στο δημαρχείο της πόλης έχει ένα πλήθος μηχανικών μορφών με πιο επιβλητική τον σκελετό που σημαίνει τις αλλαγές της ώρας:

Η κάθε γωνιά της πόλης κρύβει και μια μικρή ή μεγάλη έκπληξη και έχει τις δικές της ξεχωριστές ιστορίες να διηγηθεί. Νομίζω πως τώρα έχω μια πιο ολοκληρωμένη εικόνα που με βοηθάει να κατανοήσω ακόμα καλύτερα το μέρος που έζησε και έγραψε ένας από τους πιο αγαπημένους μου συγγραφείς, ο Franz Kafka. Οι νυχτερινές βόλτες στις μεσαιωνικές γειτονιές, οι αλλόκοτοι πύργοι, τα περιπλανώμενα φαντάσματα... όλα είναι ακόμα εκεί. Το βιβλίο συνοδεύεται με ένα πλήθος από εντυπωσιακές γκραβούρες.

Un petit livre parfait pour découvrir les légendes de Prague. A ne conseiller toutefois qu'à des personnes qui connaissent un peu la ville ou qui y sont déjà allés, sinon ça perd beaucoup de son intérêt.

So, I actually read the book Czech Fairy Tales by Magdalena Wagnerová, which is not listed on Goodreads. Rather than select another Czech fairy tales book by another author, I chose another book by Wagnerová and won't rate it, only provide a review. The book is available at the Franz Kafka Bookshop in Prague.

These fairy tales, which are familiar to Western readers, have a distinct divergence from what we have traditionally grown up reading in many cases. Not sure where or when the divergence occurred, but it was fascinating discovering the differences in the original. For instance, The Princess and the Pea is a familiar tale of a sensitive princess being tested by a single pea buried under a mountain of mattresses. The prince proposes to her when she detects the pea. However, in the original Czech fairy tale version, there is an entirely different protagonist and storyline: the prince's maid. She has grown up with the prince and knows him well, and serves his family while always sharing her honest opinion about things. She can tell the prince isn't really ready to marry, laughing at his crazy idea to test the kingdom's princesses with a pea. But when one actually detects it, and the prince is compelled to propose to her, she ruefully rejects the maid - stating that she will only accept the proposal if the maid is cast out from the royal family's home.

The maid accepts, but stands up to the princess: She notes that she is only leaving since her family, the royal family and prince that she loves, has asked her to. It is in that moment the prince realizes the maid's inherent nobility, and he immediately proposes to her and...they live happily ever after.

Stories like these abound in this book, which is interesting to analyze from the perspective of what adults wanted children to learn about the world they were growing up in. What is important? What is dangerous? What is the nature of reality and how is it deceived?

Well worth a read, even if you are an adult...5/5 stars. :)

La traducción de este libro al español es absolutamente atroz. Me da esperanzas de que, si todo falla, en algún momento me puedo dedicar a traducir libros porque el listón está francamente bajo a veces. Aquí no hablamos de que se pierdan los matices (mi checo no está ni mucho menos en ese punto), sino de que en ocasiones llegamos a la absoluta ininteligibilidad. Me considero un lector lo suficientemente ducho como para no perder la concentración en capítulos de 4 páginas, pero es que este libro a veces no hay por dónde cogerlo.

Ojo, a lo mejor no es un fallo de traducción sino de escritura. A lo mejor el libro está sencillamente mal escrito. Pero mi opinión es que la edición en español probablemente es peor que la original por la traducción.

Cosas positivas: 1) algunas leyendas son bastante interesantes desde el punto de vista histórico y folklórico y 2) los grabados decimonónicos están bastante chulos.

En definitiva: no creo que merezca mucho la pena salvo como souvenir o para conocer un aspecto extra de la ciudad de Praga si es que te interesa mucho la materia (como es mi caso). Más allá de eso no tiene gran interés.

Ma swoje momenty, obrazki i mapa są prześliczne, ale język jest dziwny, zdania po angielsku są nieco nienaturalnie złożone, jakby najpierw były napisane po czesku, a potem przetłumaczone na angielski, czasami trzeba 2 razy przeczytać zdanie, żeby je zrozumieć.
Legendy same w sobie zwyczajne, większość kończy się śmiercią, ale takie były czasy

A good little tourist book that adds flavour to the sights and sounds of old Prague, but unless you're there to see the buildings in person, it feels like something is missing. Also it's a bit morbid, as most of the tales revolve around death and torture, but I suppose that's to be expected for a bunch of stories about a city as old as Prague.

A travel guide to Prague and its most well-known attractions and monuments, regarding the old times. Great to read while in the city (or even before you visit it, so you know where to go, but you can re-plan where you are there).
Not too big, so you can read it while you are on holidays or even a business trip, a great souvenir to bring back home if you are a book-lover!!
Don't buy it from the souvenir stores, you will pay it far more than what you pay in a bookstore

Dieses Buch gibt einen guten Überblick über berühmte (Golem, Rabbi Löw, …) Sagengestalten, aber genauso über sehr spezifische Geschichten. Auch findet man sich im alten Prag wieder und lernt die bekanntesten Sehenswürdigkeiten kennen.
Leider nicht sehr mit Spannung erfüllt und von Schreibfehlern überfüllt, deswegen nur 2/5

I bought this book in a souvenir shop in Prague, while I was on a school trip there. It is a pretty good book for tourists, however I think you need to read it while in the city, because it got confusing for me to read it, after I got home, which is why I’m only giving it 2 stars.

the engravings by Matej Bartak are delightful and very realistic. I instantly recognized each building.

Legends are short one or two pages each, not a lot of detail but a nice survey of Prague legends.

I know it's a short book, and that there are still some legends and myths left untold, but it's a great escape to Prague, when you wish you were there.
